Yes, “America’s Quarterback,” Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, had a shaky performance today — good passes and ugly picks.

Just like yesterday, he started out Gabbert-like with two picks in his first three passes, but quickly got over the shakes and the longer practice went, threw better and better.

Joe spoke with Alterraun Verner after practice; the Bucs’ corner had an excellent day, hounding rookie wide receiver Kenny Bell all morning. May have been the best practice that Joe has witnessed from the UCLA product.

Verner was asked for his impressions of young Jameis, and Verner stated witnesses shouldn’t be focused on Jameis’ interceptions because he’s learning and quarterbacks don’t learn by not throwing.

“He’s been good. He’s a rookie,” Verner said of Jameis. “He will make mistakes here and there. But he’s not making [mistakes] because he is timid. He’s going after it. He’s gunslinging it. He’s trying to make things happen. He’s going after it and that is the best way to learn.

“If you are just timid, timid, timid and then when the pressure gets on, then you are not going to know how to respond. That’s one thing I know about him. The pressure is never going to get too big. He can throw an interception and the next time, he’ll probably take me over the top. That’s the type of player he is and that’s the type of player I’ve seen.

“So, I wouldn’t be too concerned with him, with the interceptions and stuff like that, especially with him. He’s a gamer. He’s made some great throws already. He’s just gong to get better and better.”

Joe has heard the same from various NFL analysts, that Jameis is the classic gunslinger. He might throw a pick here or there, sometimes a head-scratching interception, then he will pick apart a defense with laser-like precision.

As Mike Tomlin once said about Ben Roethlisberger, gunslingers sometimes get shot. You live with the bad and you enjoy, savor and celebrate the good.

All hail, Jameis.

Titans have named Mariota as their starter, Bucs named Winston.

GREAT interest in opener. It will come down to which rookie QB makes the least mistakes.

A MUST WIN game for Bucs.

We learn from experience and especially our failures.

I remember learning to downhill ski. Eventually I be going too fast, pushing that envelope, and I’d crash. But the next time the edge of the envelope would be a little farther out and I’d go faster before crashing.

Fameis is pushing that envelope. He’s going to learn from his ints.

Meanwhile we have a group here who are worked up about Mariota not tossing any ints. Why is that a good thing? Either Tennessee’s defense sucks or Mariota is not cutting it loose and just managing the offense.

  3. The Buc Realist Says:

@Joe any truth to the rumor that Lovie is loving all these int. because its making his defense look good!!!

  4. Joe Says:

    Realist:

Pretty sure the answer to that question is, “true.”

  5. I'm tired and 87 is right Says:

Man we just need to start playing somebody else then our answers will start to be answered. Go Bucs! Play Guns n roses “Patience” that might help us all calm down.

  6. I'm tired and 87 is right Says:

Sorry questions will be answered. Lol

I wouldn’t be too concerned about these interceptions. Like Lovie said, they’re showing different schemes to the rookie this early in training camp. After all its normal for rookies to make mistakes this early in camp as long as it isn’t the last week of preseason and he’s still mistaking the same mistakes. On the other hand,it’s great to see the defense it’s picking up where it left off last year. I’m predicting double digit sacks for McCoy this season and that our secondary will be in the top 8 in interceptions.

    Tom:

Anybody who believes that the first game of the season is a “MUST WIN” has lost sight of the big picture.

This is a learning process for all of our rookies, and an L in their first game means zero in the grand scheme of things. The only people that say different

Here we are into our fourth practice of training camp and we’re talking about a MUST WIN game. You guys are amazing!

  11. No better way to say it Says:

Just like in life you dont learn by your success but by your failures.. QBs dont learn from complations rather they learn from their INTs.

  12. The original "Kevin" Says:

Lovie vd lebeau may the least effective offense lose!!!

  13. Tampa Tony Says:

To give this fan base hope you gotta beat the other 2-14 team or it shows the fans you still suck.

  14. Buc1987 Says:

I’ll judge how Winston looks in his 3 rd pre-season game and not worry too much about practice. Same as the o-line, wait for pre-season games. No need to fret right now.

  15. Pillage and Plunder Says:

Not that we really need to be discussng anything other than our BUCS…but I ready an article earlier today from Paul Khuarsky (Titan’s scribe) that Mariota has been deadly accurate and is the only QB on the Titans who has not thrown an interception thru the first four practices

  16. LakelandBuc Says:

You want to create a winning atmosphere and treat every game as a ‘ must win game’. You don’t want to create a losing atmosphere and look at your schedule and try to pick some easy wins. You want to have that mentality that you can beat any team, that what the Bucs are lacking.

Easy to not throw a pick when you are playing Checkdown Charlie.

  18. Pillage and Plunder Says:

Not questioning Lovie’s tactics at all Joe. I agree that the best way to get Jaboo ready is to throw everything at him now to prepare him for what he will face down the road. As for what type of throws and defense MM is facing, I have no idea, was simply stating that from everything coming out of the reports around the league is saying that his accuracy is really good. If their offense is going revolve around check down reads, I will take that all day long with the speed of our LB’s.

  19. Dick2111 Says:

@Pillage and Plunder: “Mariota has been deadly accurate and is the only QB on the Titans who has not thrown an interception thru the first four practices.”

Could be a lot that the writer left unsaid, such as ‘Are they bringing him along slowly, or are they letting him push the envelope every day?’ Maybe the Titans’ coaches are focusing first on the types of passes that Marcus has always had success with. We don’t know.

What we do know is that Dirk Koetter is letting Jameis push the envelope for sure. He’ll throw his share of interceptions, but as Thomas Edison once said ”I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.’

I’m sure that Edison was being facetious, but he’s right: We often learn more from our failures than from our successes.

Checkdown Charley, you nailed that one joe lol

  21. Bucsfanman Says:

I’m with ’87 on this one. Good lord, he’s a rookie and this is training camp! You can expect a bunch of mistakes, it’s natural for rookies. The real litmus test is how does that rookie bounce back?
Regular season cannot get here fast enough! Go Bucs!

  22. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Idontwanna I hardly ever agree with Tom. But hell yea this particular opening is a must win. Realist!!! Just maybe Lovie wants you to see that his defense can and will be more aggressive.

  23. drdneast Says:

Well said observation by Mike Tomlin.
Hell, Drew Bress looked like McClown in his final game against us last year but I don’t see the Saints trying to get rid of him.
Picks at the beginning of practice doesn’t sup rise me. Winston is still adjusting to NFL speed. It will take awhile.
I’m sure Kotter will adjust game plans to account for this but why do it now. The kid has to learn and grow.
Treating him with kid gloves and acting like he is the great savior like Joe wants to do won’t do him any good at all.

  24. BuccaneEric75 Says:

87, your right about practice. I was watching some video on YouTube about Jameis’ first FSU game. The reporter, I guess, on the video was at the FSU practices that week and saw all of the bad throws by Winston. He thought Jameis would have a rough outing that first game. Guess he was wrong. Some players aren’t practice players and only shine when it’s “GO” time.

  25. JabooBuc Says:

For those that do not follow FSU closely then you may not be familiar wth practice Jameis vs gamer Jameis. There was some question as to whether he would be the starter during his redshirt freshman year as Jimbo said it was to close to call between him and Coker. He ended up winning the battle after some strong performances during inter squad scrimmages and the rest is history.

He was said from the beginning that he is a visual learner he wants Lovie to throw the kitchen sink at him so he can see it all. There is no concern with his confidence so why not? Not sure the same can be said about Mariota.

  26. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Jaboobuc they all will soon see.
