Donovan Smith Seems Ready

Bucs rookie LT Donovan Smith is getting comfortable.

There are a lot of things Bucs rookie left tackle Donovan Smith must learn on the NFL level.

And it isn’t just dealing with opponents.

“I have to get used to the cannons and fireworks,” Donovan said of the atmosphere at the Den of Depression. “We don’t have much of that at Penn State. It’s pretty cool, though. Now we just need to fill [the stadium].”

Smith noted the speed of the game is beginning to slow for him with two preseason games under his belt.

“It’s just a game of football,” Smith said. “Obviously being a rookie there is a learning curve. Once you have that first game out of thew way you are able to settle down and play football.”

And Smith was part of a line Monday night that gave America’s Quarterback,” Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, time to set up and throw, which was critical for the rookie face of the franchise.

How good did Smith play Monday? Thanks to a Twitter follower of Joe’s, a video clip of Smith shows him rag-dolling not one but two opponents on one play.

did you get the express written consent of the nfl? i dont know what the difference is between you posting this and me posting screen shots. how is one more of a violation than the other?

Yo tom E I guess that dancing panda ain’t so lazy after all.

He also gets blown up more than any other player on our team. He has such a long way to go that I’m really hoping he doesn’t start week 1. We all know he is big and strong but so are 200 other would be left tackles who work at Carmax. Gotta be quick and smart at the NFL level.

big nasty Donald penn off the practice squad set the standard so being a 2nd round pick why wouldn’t smith be able to handle starting? you don’t have to be a 1st round pick to be worthy of a starting job so says kwon alexander. go bucs

4 rookie starters outta this draft class! The Licht bashers might just need to shut their pieholes.

Buc4lyfe I agree and expect to see him on that field opening day.

    aka The Great Wall

Loving this KID who came out EARLY and reminds me of the great Donald Penn. what is he like 20 years old throwing around grown men. I’d like to hear Geno Atkins take on the kid.

Outside of one play the kid was phenomenal but what do I know….

If he want the starting job, he gotta earn it on the field. And so far he haven’t did anything to be in the conversation for starting LT. His play has been so bad, that PFF has graded him as our lowest graded tackle. He need to show something in these last two preseason games.

    Thanks for using my video

  10. DavidbigBucsFan Says:

But Lakeland who has done anything better than him? If they don’t play better then why not play a rookie with more upside and room to grow. In time this young man will be a beast on the left side.

Watched that five times in a row. Still laughing. LOVE it!!!

    Dancing Panda on deck.

I’ve been a huge Penn State fan my whole life. I hope Smith represents the Nittany Lions inn Tampa as well or better then Joe Jurevicius did.

Loved the video, he threw 95right of the screen.

You mean the same clowns who just wrote Andrew Luck is not a top-10 quarterback?

So you prefer Anthony Collins back? Pray tell who on the Bucs roster is better than Smith at left tackle? Bucs didn’t draft Smith with a high second-round pick to have him watch Kevin Panphile play.

Smith looked so much better week two compared to week one. The whole line did. Marpet is really going to be good. I was wrong about him. I thought he was a wasted pick. But i’ll be more than happy to eat crow in that one!
Both our lines look kinda nasty. Kinda mean. And Warren was a nice suprise. Good to know we have a little depth inside. My only concern is Reid Fragel. Hope he improves but he looked a step behind Monday. Dunlap just ran circles around him.
I really hope defenses blitz Jameis constantly. With Koetter in his ear, Jameis should be able to find the mismatch that occurs every time a team blitzes.

Now that’s real talk Largo. But man I’ma tell you once they said 30 reps 225/30in vert/30 wonderlic and fastest 40 time. I was sold on Mongo.

  17. Big Marlon B Says:

rag dolled 2 players?? that’s a stretch. he absolutely tossed the first guy, but the Domata Peko (#94) was pretty much just walled off. still impressive because Peko is a very big dude, but hardly rag dolled.

  18. Capt.Tim Says:

Smith and Marpet both look like they are ready to start.
Line was better last week- than all of last year.

There is hope for the line

  19. Damion Says:

Guys slow your roll, that play was a great play but Smith actually did not have a very good game. The bucs running backs and TEs esp, Charles Sim did a awesome job chipping the DE on most of the bucs possession. On 1-1 blocks Smith looks like he is going to trip over his feet on speed rush and often get beat, then he overcompensate and get beat on the inside. He has a very long way to go. He did not have a good game say for a few plays

lol…I don’t know what some of you were watching…their was a big improvement from the Viking game to the cinny game…the whole line played much better as a unit..they only gave up 1 first half sack..last week I believe they gave up 3..last year they would’ve giving up 4 by the end of the first half…I understand fans keeping it real but its come to the point where most of you are nit picking…the line opened up holes for doug and kept Winston clean only giving up one sack…this is the NFL..elite players vs. elite players..we may not win every battle(play) but we must win the war(game)..this team as a whole has improved at just about every position and some of you fail to realize that..some of you will only be satisfied with a 19-0 record ranking 1st in offense 1st in defense with a super bowl trophy…I know it only preseason but this is the best the bucs have looked in a long time..so REAL BUCS FANS enjoy the ride its going to be fun…GO BUCS!!!
