A home victory. Wow!

It doesn’t count, but it feels so good. At this rate, Joe might soon have to retire the Den of Depression nickname.

What didn’t the Bucs do tonight? They picked the ball off. They recovered fumbles. They had a safety. They sacked Andy Dalton three times in the first quarter (see full story below.)

Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback, was sharp, running and throwing. Doug Martin was electric. E-Freaking-Letric.

And the special teams had shining moments, kicking and covering. Even the backups dominated. The Bengals generated less than 200 yards of offense.

The Bucs had way, way, way to many penalties. But that really doesn’t matter right now. The Bucs looked good.

It had been too long.

“Started from the bottom now we here!”

They had to many penalties, but they looked damn good! Go Martin Go!!!!

  3. Abdominal Snowman Says:

Nice to have a game with some things to build on. The punting and coverage was clutch. The blocking was relatively good, running game and passing. Pass rush looked dominant at times, run defense was solid as well. Pass defense needs some work but at least showed some promise out there.

We wil need to be much more disciplined of a team if we are going to make a mark this year, but some calls definitely weren’t in our favor.

Next game is when we’d like to see more of the same positives and try to sure up those negatives. If they can show this wasn’t a fluke next week i’ll wager more than 6 wins for us.

  4. ARGH_M8E Says:

That felt REAL good!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Refs got carried away with the penalties trying to be Monday Night Football stars of the show if u ask me, but then also missed some of theirs, who knows… Who cares, like the man said, it doesn’t count… But damn, did that feel good. Pressure from the D line, just tough football Bucs! Btw James is the TRUTH!!!!!!!! Sky’s the limit with this young man.

  5. Joe Cool Says:

Doesn’t matter what anyone says. Jaws just said on ESPN that Cincinnati Bengals have nothing to be proud of after tonight’s performance, they played like TOTAL CRAP. Totally discrediting anything the Buc’s accomplished tonight… He is the best employee BSPN has employed. Almost as good as Barry Melrose.

  6. ARGH_M8E Says:

Ok maybe I was tough on the refs, but it sure felt too picky. Let em play, and also Grudes “our Chucky” was hilarious and awesome tonight!!! Glad to have him in the both, instead of against us on the sidelines.

  7. Bobby Says:

Now lets see how the negative posters spin this. It was all “2-14” after last week. Now maybe they’re seeing some light. I’m still saying 6-8 wins but they might shock me if they play with the attitude they had tonight. That was fun to watch.

  8. Tampa Tony Says:

Liked seeing the team not look like a disaster but they gotta clean up those penalties. Those can kill drives

  9. Couch Fan Says:

Best pre-season game I’ve seen in a long time. Hope it carries to the season.

  10. LandoCommando Says:

I had almost forgot what it was like to watch my favorite team dominate a football game. Then our bucs showed up tonight! Man it had been too long. As Lovie said, we have a long way to go but our boys showed what is possible against a very talented Bengals team. My takeaways:

    1. Jameis had an excellent night. I thought his command of the game at the line of scrimmage was Manning-esque. Listening to him bark commands and read the defense got my adrenaline pumping.

    2. Doug Martin looked freaking explosive! Good vision, ran with authority and showed the quickness he’s been hiding since 2012.

    3. Kwon Alexander may have been the biggest heist in the draft that I have ever seen. Watching him and lavonte tear it up this year is going be a lot of fun. Any true bucs fan loves a lightning quick linebacker, and Kwon delivers. Very excited about the defense this year.

    4. Please, NFL, please don’t add another ref to the game. If I wanted to watch zebras throwing yellow hankies, I would put on “Madagascar”.

All in all, I am super stoked after tonight. But, the skeptic in me isn’t dead yet. Bring on week 1!

  11. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    Argh

Refs got carried away with the penalties trying to be Monday Night Football stars of the show if u ask me,

Boy that was my original thought as well. It was clearly Chucky and Tirico were getting as frustrated as us. Who wants to watch yellow fever.

But then the more I thought the more I realize what was going on. First we have to admit a horrible weakness when it comes to penalties on offense. This is a carry over from last year. It was OUR fault since the Bengals didn’t get the same number of calls and the game was in Tampa…we didn’t get homered.

I think the refs use preseason to send messages. They call the games too close for regular season games because of the boredom of yellow flags and so they try to clamp down when it doesn’t really count.

And let’s be honest. It’s preseason for the refs as well. I was not as upset at the calls tonight as the lack of a couple calls that should have gone against Minnesota’s pass defense last week,

  12. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Impressions…

I see a huge reason to keep 4 preseason games. More than a time to evaluate depth, it also allows coahes to spot issues to fix…like penalties, before the season starts.

Dirk Koetter is making a huge difference. He’s even turning Glennon into a potential starter. The better he looks, the greater the trade value.

Sorry St. Pete fan, we DO need to trade him if we get an offer of 2nd round + a QB after the preseason. It is Glennon’s last year as a Buc. No way he resigns if he believes he can start elsewhere. We should get something while we can.

Sure, we need a backup…but we also need picks. We’re not making the playoffs this year.

    Moving on…

Both quarterbacks have sped up their passing game under Koetter. Winston did not stare down ANY receivers in this game, and that is huge. His release is faster too.

Dude made some passes that were draw dropping.

That said, the Bengals were not playing defense at their usual level. They were holding back. Not sure why. It was a very basic defense. Maybe Marvin doesn’t want to show much in the preseason.

Winston has yet to score a passing touchdown. It will come, but I hope its a deep pass when it does.

Defense rocked. Realist, you blamed him for a bad defense last year…swore it was him more than Frazier…yet look at the improvement now that he is directly involved. Instant. I doubt you’ll eat crow though.

Bell is going to be good, but he didn’t show it in this game. I suspect it will take a few more games for him to adjust before he can begin getting better.

Leonard Johnson goes down. Whatever. Same old.

Mike Evans is a bigger concern. Hamstring?

Great game, even if it doesn’t count.

    Protect the QB better!

  13. Buccfan37 Says:

I enjoyed the Gruden talk also. I agree with him that the PAT change is ridiculous. Perhaps the sports books like that rule change. As a Glennon fan I also liked Gruden’s take on his play. The amount of penalties called were distracting, the league messing with the continuity and flow of the game with 8 refs which led to all those penalties. I read somewhere this number of refs may be the direction the league is heading to better call offensive and defensive holding and other line infractions. More penalties, just what viewers don’t need. The saying is you could a penalty on every play, well the refs plan to do it.

  14. Buccfan37 Says:

*call a penalty on every play

  15. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Penalties

    Penalties

can someone please say PENYATA WALKER!!!!!

  16. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Hey

All You MOB Glennon fans can come out off hiding again

  17. BrianBucs Says:

    @ Joe

Waiting to see if you are going to swallow your pride and acknowledge how really good Mike Glennon looked and played and how sharp he threw the football and ran the offense. Seems like he was the Buc QB that threw threw a TD pass and had the higher QB rating. Did you see that Joe or were you too busy staring at Winston on the sideline?

  18. Drywaller Buc Says:

That poise and throw by Glennon was A1 PERFECT. I’m comfortable with both QB’s if anything goes down injury wise with Winston. Winston played great was pumped up.

  19. Drywaller Buc Says:

Unfortunately Glennon is trade bait. I’m thinking after this season is over. They need him right now.who knows he might wanna stay. He’s definitely experienced enough to be a starter somewhere else. I like the kid a lot. Great football player. Great attitude. Wish him the best

  20. TheBucsAnthem Says:

I’d rather have Zac Mettenberger over Mike Glennon

  21. cmurda Says:

Relax Brian. We’ll let Glennon hold balls, just not footballs. He can carry Winston’s jock. Look, I like Glennon as one of the best backups in the league but he isn’t even close to Winston’s level. Glennon did some good things. Did you also see the play that Glennon had a solid 10 seconds to find somebody, couldn’t find anybody and then fled to his left eventually throwing the ball out of bounds. That was the slowest I’ve ever seen a player run since Refrigerator Perry plowed into the endzone in 1985.

  22. Buc1987 Says:

BrianBucs…Glennon did what against 2nd and 3rd stringers?

  23. Bucs4lyfe Says:

Great win for the team’s confidence and the o line much improved but no one on this line knows how to pick up a blitz which means that’s what we’ll see all season until they do

  24. BoJin Says:

    How bout that Glennon!!!!

  25. BrianBucs Says:

I’m one of those guys that wants to see everybody do well. I want to see Winston have a good career here, Mariota have a good career in Tenn. and Glennon do well wherever he ends up. The Bucs had offers for Glennon before the draft but let teams know that he wasn’t for sale. They wanted him here for this year because you never know what to expect from a rookie QB. However, during the off-season I say if Bucs get a good offer like a 2nd or a 3rd and another pick or player they should take it.

The Bengals played their starting defense into the 3rd quarter, so I see 1987 is still just a blubbering idiot

And cmurda seems to know a lot about Winston’s balls anf jock

  26. Stpetebucsfan Says:

That was the slowest I’ve ever seen a player run since Refrigerator Perry plowed into the endzone in 1985.

I don’t know about that. Peyton Manning is not going to move any quicker.
Brad Johnson wasn’t fleet of foot.

@Buc Bonzai I would take your deal of a 2nd round pick with a backup QB tossed into the deal. My point is that MG8 DOES have value. There are those here who believe it would be a miracle to simply recoup our 3rd pick. That’s just BS as Chucky illustrated pretty well tonight. But of course I’m not sure Chucky’s knowledge of QB’s could compare with our posters here.

  27. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    BrianBucs

I appreciate your attitude. There are many Fameis supporters here who simply cannot get past people challenging his off field actions. The debate leading up to the debate must have scarred their psyches.

What is disturbing…ah just sad really…are the number of posters who support Fameis..as do I…but who do not share my genuine confidence. Either that or they are paranoid. The fear that somehow giving Glennon or Mariota the props they earn somehow diminished Fameis accomplishments. To me this is what is truly classified as simply hating because you believe if Mariota sucks the pressure is off Fameis. Again watch it and mark it down here. At the end of three years if both players remain healthy both players will be franchise QB’s.

Why who was talking about Winston’s off field actions tonight?

  30. BrianBucs Says:

    @ 1987

Proof that the Bengals played their defensive starters into the 3rd quarter or proof that you are still a blubbering idiot?

As for #1, I continued to watch the game after your man-crush Winston went out

As for #2, I just read your posts

  31. BrianBucs Says:

    @ ST.PETE

I agree with you. I think their biggest fear is that Mariota will have a better career and win more championships than Winston. That’s why they seem to be so eager to spew their childish brand of hate

  32. Buc1987 Says:

“No they didn’t, can you prove that?”

I think it’s a pretty straight forward question, not looking for a 2 part answer. I watched the whole game from start to finish too. I saw no Bengals starters in there in the 3rd. Apparently you did and have a full grasp of the Bengals starting lineup though.

I’m also a big Glennon fan too, so I wasn’t saying anything bad about Glennon. Just stating that he wasn’t facing nearly half of the Bengals starters.

  33. Buc1987 Says:

In fact I’m watching the replay right now, it’s the 3rd and the starters are not in there. So I guess that makes you the blubbering idiot afterall.

  34. Tiny Tim Says:

Understand, we won tonight because of Jameis Winston. When was the last time you saw this team play this inspired? Jameis told the big dog last week how important it was to win this game at home for the fans. The team fed off of that. When was the last time you saw this team feed off of McCoy or david. No disrespect to them because I am thankful they are on our team. But Jameis will not only galvanize this team, but our city. Yes it is only preseason, but Jameis made them think this game was important and the whole team played that way. All you Mariotta lovers need to choose your side now. Jameis is the real deal. You should be alright by now with the bucs drafting him. He is that Sapp personality that we as a team and as a city has been missing for a long while!!!!

  35. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

    Brian

Shutup. You like Mariotta so much you can’t accept that we drafted a better NFL quarterback than him!

Funny thing.. usually “Realist” is the first to post, but I don’t see any posts since last night. That may be the most telling stat of the game – Lovie shut out Realist and his “passive defense/fire Lovie” shtick!

  37. SOFIERCE Says:

    They had too many Refs

  38. BrianBucs Says:

    @ 7432

    That remains to be seen

Pretty sad a fan of the team is so obsessed with wanting failure and being a negative troll that he isn’t even excited over the team playing at a level like that.
