Browns 31, Buccaneers 7

August 29th, 2015

JameisBrownsWhere was the energy?

Where was the anger and passion to seize the home turf and send Josh McCown home crying?

Joe didn’t see that tonight. In fact, Joe saw career loser McCown beat the Bucs behind two drives of double-digit plays.

The Bucs’ first-team defense was sackless. Lavonte David had two tackles broken on him. America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, looked like McCown of 2014 — rookie mistakes in the face of terrible pass protection.

There were positives. Doug Martin continues to be electric and stayed healthy. Charles Sims flashed. And new right tackle Gosder Cherilus was solid when he got in with the first team. Starting rookie middle linebacker Kwon Alexander played fast and hard.

But right now, the cold reality is the needle on the Bucs is pointing down. The Browns are not a winning football team. They don’t have a lot of weapons, and Lovie Smith couldn’t find a way to stop them.

How bout that kicker battle? Connor Barth and Patrick Murray both missed their only field goal try.

NFL types call this third preseason game the “dress rehearsal” for opening day. Let’s hope not.

Why can’t we get a quarterback like they have? He was good.

  2. Lefty Says:

Joe nice job having last year’s game day thread vs. Browns included under today’s preseason mess

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Awful……Oline/Dline

  4. Lakeland Buc Says:

We came out flat and the Browns came out smokin, I think the short week was responsible for most of it. But in the NFL, sometimes you have to be ready to go on a 4 1/2 day rest. It was a valuable lesson for our young guys, especially on the offensive side. We should only learn from a beatdown like this, we gave one last week and we took one this week. Welcome to the NFL Rooks.

  5. tb Says:

It doesn’t look good they gotta fix those lines.

  6. America's D-Bag Says:

Poetic justice. #13 made a lot of you “gurus” look like McClowns….. At least for one preseason game.

  7. White Tiger Says:

Now, if the morons had kept Josh McCown – and given him THIS line – they actually might have won some games. They didn’t want that…they either naively thought kid fameis would be ALL they needed – or they treated you ‘hole fans like the noobs you are…they absolutely knew how long it would take before this ‘investment’ would pay off (2 seasons of losses), but they knew you wouldn’t know the difference so long as your boy was heir apparent – you’d faithfully buy those season ticket packages while they bought time waiting for his offensive line to learn how to play their positions in the NFL.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure they picked competent guys that would be able to digest and learn from guys feeding them from a firehose – in a couple of super-fast seasons they’ll demonstrate the schematic knowledge to go along with their legitimate NFL talent – why, by then, it’ll be obvious!

    suckers.

  8. Buc1987 Says:

Winston was the right choice. 4-6 wins tops THIS season.

  9. Supersam Says:

McCown torched us!! Man he looked good!! Amazing what a guy can do with an Oline that will block and a real offensive coordinator huh Joe… Should’ve kept McCown traded the pick and drafted all Oline and Dline. Gonna be a long year, hard to blame it all on Winston but he kid looked BAD. Throw the ball AWAY!!

  10. White Tiger Says:

Had absolutely nothing to do with who was flat, or short weeks.

Had absolutely EVERYTHING to do with the fact that this was the week NFL defenses start game-planning for the opposing QB.

If you really are naive enough to think that the short week left your boys flat (after they played about 1-1/2 quarters of pre-season football 4 days ago – then you’re in for a treat. Your team’s about to be flat EVERY SINGLE WEEK for the ENTIRE season!

That’s ok though, after about game six – of the real season – we know we won’t have to put up with your loud-mouthed, low-information bragging….

You’ll be busy watching your ‘noles pound the creampuffs in the ACC.

  11. tmaxcon Says:

    Lovie for President

  12. Buc1987 Says:

White Tiger..blah blah blah…YOUR team sucks too!

  13. White Tiger Says:

Might have been a good idea to trade Napoleon Dynamite and start Josh McCown behind this line…

Wonder why the dolt in the front office didn’t want Buc’s fans to have a winner while kid fameis sat on the bench, waiting for his o-line to be drafted/traded for…?

…or DO I wonder why the dolt made you low-information football types believe Josh McCown sucked?

No, I don’t wonder. Your GM didn’t want their to be any confusion, or competition behind center – he’s a huckster who knew what he was doing when he committed to a dropback QB.

I’m not concerned – we’ll be good in a couple seasons. Hope Lovie and Licht can stick around long enough to see it too.

Actually, I really don’t care if they are…they deserve exactly what they get.

  14. Buc1987 Says:

I’ve been saying 4-6 wins tops all summer….so this really means nothing to me. Lots of wow’s and lots of wtf did they just do that for’s this season.

    Realist on the other hand…

  15. Zoocomics Says:

    Off topic…

Question… when exactly are we going to wear our home jerseys? This is the second week in a row, and we wore away jerseys again. Why?

Come regular season, it’s been a common practice of ours to wear the whites at home for the first few games due the hot weather conditions of Tampa. So we had a chance under the lights for 2 preseason games to wear the reds and we didn’t…wtf!? Looks like we won’t be seeing the reds for a while.

  16. Mo_Downs Says:

    Bucs Positional Grades: OFFENSE

QB (C-) Ah..rookies will be rookies
RB (C+) Good blocking = good runs. Sadly, the opposite is also true
    WR (C) W/O V-Jax, (F-)
TE (C) Why can’t JW find a TE in the pros like he could in college?
    OL (INC) No really….INCOMPLETE..!!

    Bucs Positional Grades: DEFENSE

    Kwon was good.
Everybody else (INC) No silver linings in a “McClown” beat down.

If it’s any consolation, the Bengals mauled the Bears tonight. So, at least our loss proves that injuries to key players can limit effectiveness.

Headline in October: “Will Mike Evans or Kenny Bell finally practice and be able to play on Sunday?”

  17. White Tiger Says:

    Yes ’87 – it does.

…but I take some solace in the fact that I was right, and you were wrong.

In a completely unrelated note: they played some really good football through halftime in Tenessee tonight.

I think this game was a charade…sort of. I saw the lucky breaks the browns got where they got us (on certain plays) in the beginning but then it looked like we just gave up….bleh, preseason!

Plus no Warren under Center, no Evans, dont read too much into it. Hopefully Marpet learned some moves and Lovie learned to start Warren GAME #1!!!!

Exactly what was I wrong about? Winston? Naaaaw you ain’t throwing that at me in the 3rd preseason game of the season are you?

  22. Buc1987 Says:

This game and Monday’s game really means nothing to me, actually. I’ll be patient. I can wait a few more years.

    With Lovie or without Lovie.

4-6 wins tops. If he stays, he stays. Atleast he got me the QB that I wanted and STILL trust.

  23. BucFan20 Says:

Evans has not cough a pass in a preseason game from Winston. So that match up is not proven yet. That should be one of the top ones but it has not been.

  24. BrianBucs Says:

So Josh McCown gets his first win in Ray Jay (Ugh) I love my Bucs but there is still a LOT of work to do

  25. JMN Says:

I’m with many on this board…it will be a 4-6 win season which I’ve been saying all summer. Rookie QB, rooking O-line players, can’t expect to be heading to the playoffs. There will be many up and down games this year. Get ready for the roller coaster ride Bucs fans, it is part of the progression.

  26. TuesNiteRockstar Says:

Im happy Doug looks god..winston..hahahaha smh geezus..aint that good..no defense to bail him out..another long season ahead folks

  27. StPeteBucsFan Says:

White Tiger you are an absolute idiot. Putting aside injuries which are always a wild card I’d love to bet you about who will fare better this year…Fameis or McClown…IF McClown even keeps his job from Johnny Football.

You people are such front runners.

For those who are not in the group of the nattering nabobs of negativity like White Tiger and the other trolls remember this.

First I agree totally with Lakeland’s take.

Secondly I still stand by 10-6 but it’s going to be a wild ride. This is basically now a YOUNG team. They are going to be up and down like this all year. Over half this squad is just beginning to find their way into the NFL and professional careers.

We are not nearly as much better than Cincinnati as we looked last week and we’re nowhere near as worse than Cleveland as we looked tonight. It’s the effing preseason.

Having said that does everybody remember the record White Tiger’s (we’ll NEVER forget your support for McCown it’s now on the record) QB achieved last year. 1-3 in the preseason. We’ve already matched that with all the rookies.

McCown got lucky on that scramble that saved their second drive. And some of our players didn’t finish the deal. Again it’s about making a freakiing play.

Anybody who claims McCown is better than Fameis OR even MG8 has NO credibility. McCown has 51 starts and has won 1/3!!! He has lost two games for every one he has won. That’s a freaking fact not the opinion of some blog troll.

What pissesss me off is that some of you losers would rather see the Bucs lose so your negative predictions can come true than see them win. And if you’re honest with yourselves you’ll admit it!!! Look in the mirror. Which is more important your fantasy of being a “football expert” or seeing the Bucs win.

  28. Buc1987 Says:

If McClown can run all over Lovie’s D. What’s Mariota going to do if he has to?

  29. White Tiger Says:

Nope, the fact that it’s going to be a LLLLLOOOONNGGG couple of seasons while we watch a rookie offensive line s-l-o-w-l-y develop/learn/gel.

…WHILE knowing that a certain QB taken number two overall had another great showing tonight.

Both of those things you were WRONG about, and I was RIGHT.

…but you are correct, I get to endure my favorite team losing more games than they win over the next two years. Which is something else for which I was right, and you were wrong.

That’s about as plain as I can make it. kid fameis will be good, as soon as his line can give him enough time to set up after a 5 to 7 step drop and scan the field.

    Two seasons from now.

I haven’t even started on Mrs Frazier yet…

  30. Buc1987 Says:

Mariota won’t even have to pass the ball on Lovie’s D.

“…WHILE knowing that a certain QB taken number two overall had another great showing tonight.”

“Both of those things you were WRONG about, and I was RIGHT.”

That’s nonsense. You right about what? I never said the Bucs were going to be anything special this season, nor did I ever have a conversation with you about it. Secondly Mariota and Winston both have proved nothing yet.

  32. Abdominal Snowman Says:

Sounds like White Tiger got the White Dragon from his BF tonight or maybe Mariota. Winston will be fine, where was this you were right all along spew last week? All the overreacting amigos are live tonight. It’s Preseason, and it’s the Bucs what does everyone expect.

6 Wins would be great for us this year and some people seem to forget it. This is a different team than last year but it is going to take a few games for them to gel and at least a year for the rookies to fully get comfortable.

My favorite moment by far was Genghis Kwon laying out McClown! Ah good times.

  33. Buc1987 Says:

    Cocaine’s a helluva drug.

When did we have this conversation White Tiger?

  34. StPeteBucsFan Says:

BTW In any of this back and forth do we all agree on one thing?

Injuries are the wild card for any team. More so for the Bucs because we have a lack of depth. I honestly believe if the entire team stayed relatively healthy MG8 could still carry us until Fameis regained his health. But if we lost three or four top contributors like GMC…again…much less LVD…and now Martin although Sims certainly flashed..things will clearly get ugly.

Barring any wild rash of injuries however we’ll be fine. It’s the effing preseason.
Are the Steelers going to suck that badly this year? How about winless Seattle?

What about in our own division? Dixie Chicks 1-2 N.O. 0-2

Grow a pair! Suck it up. We have one more preseason game to go and then 16 that COUNT. BTW Our 1st opponent is also 1-2 right now. Our preseason record this year is already equal to last year’s. We can’t do worse and if we can get by Miami we can do better. But it won’t mean much.

I’m not blind. I do not defend that effort tonight anymore than my cousins the Bengal fans defended theirs last week. Again it’s the kiddie corps. We’ll be up and down this year. We are going to win some games we shouldn’t and lose some we should.

  35. Lakeland Buc Says:

Come on folks, this is a preseason game. A lot of these players won’t be around after Tuesday, and more will get cut the following week. My concern is the final 53 that we have when the regular season starts. We will still be adding players from other teams through the waiver wire. The team we seen tonight will not be close to the team that we will dress against the Titans. I’m still saying that we win the NFC South.I’m riding my BUCS all the way to the end, through thick and thin. I’m telling people right now, there will be some suprising cuts this season. I don’t understand why so many people put emphasis on a team performance during the preseason. The preseason is for people to put emphasis on a player individual performance, not the team performance. We don’t know who will be on our 53 man roster, we don’t know who will start. Teams are not showing their hands during preseason, i’m sure Dirk Koetter is not showing his.

  36. White Tiger Says:

    StPete – you’re a moron.

It’s about offensive lines – matched to the QB you have.

You put fameis behind the line McCown played behind – and delete the offensive coordinator coaching position – you might be able to scrape enough of him off the turf to send to his momma by seasons end.

McCown’s a good – not great – NFL quarterback. Put him behind a line that’s built around the ability of a mobile QB and running game – not to mention a REAL offensive coordinator – and he’ll eat you alive.

See, anyone who knows a LITTLE about football could see that – only those who swallow the load from the @joe’s, woody, and EYE-rah believed McCown sucked.

By virtue of Leeman Bennett, Ray “Lombardi’ Perkins, and Richard Williamson – I have earned my opinion. I know the consequences of choices and because I am SO familiar with Hugh Culverhouse – I know huckster football when I see it – I don’t need to be told what to think by gophers and kids with ink & buffalo sauce stuck to their fingers.

and I don’t have to wait for my mom to check my homework before I post.

  37. feelthepewterpower Says:

Joe and fellow Buccs fans – Can’t get too high or too low off preseason…..I remember Steve Spurrier and the Redskins “destroying” the Buccaneers 40-10 in week three (the “dress rehearsal game) of the preseason. Of course, the Buccaneers would go on to become world champs and Spurrier retreated back to college football…

  38. Mo_Downs Says:

    @StPete,

I hear ya. Preseason can be frustrating for fans and isn’t always a great predictor of RS success. I think we can all agree that our rookies will have growing pains. And, injuries will always keep the best TEAM off the field.

Preseason is also about picking the players for the RS. You have to see how guys perform. Sometimes that means the plays result in poor outcomes. Instant analysis always sucks. I look forward to the mid-week analysis.

That said, I’d like to know why Jameis doesn’t have a single TD pass, yet.

  39. Buc1987 Says:

Well I don’t have a long paragraph explanations as to what when on tonight. I’m fine and dandy, thank you very much.

Everyone’s knows I got what I wanted out of Lovie when they went 2-14. So whatever happens this season happens.

  40. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Let’s just remember his name from here on out. I shall be addressng him as White Tiger McCown the rest of the year. Let’s see how that prediction works out from Mr. Know it all who is CROWING HIMSELF after three preseason games.

Let’s just point out the crediblity of a troll. White Tiger McCown posted tonight……WHILE knowing that a certain QB taken number two overall had another great showing tonight.

That’s White Tiger McCown’s take. Let’s go to the actual reports from the Tennessee press…

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — After three preseason games, Marcus Mariota is still in search of his first touchdown.

The Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback and second overall draft pick didn’t complete his first pass until the second quarter of the Titans’ 34-10 loss to the Chiefs on Friday night at Arrowhead Stadium, as Tennessee’s starters, playing on a short week, were dominated by Kansas City.

Not ONE TD yet…slow start…and hey does this sound familiar…dominated after playing on a short week. Think we’ve seen that one tonight didn’t we?
Wonder if Mariota was playing on a bum ankle? No pass until the second Q.
NO TD after three games. I’m impressed White Tiger McCown.

  41. Buc1987 Says:

    Mo Downs…neither does Tom Brady.

  42. Rusty Says:

One thing for sure.MM will find wide open receivers on opening day.

  43. Bucs Fan Since '76 Says:

We have two legit Pro Bowlers on defense. Kwan looks like he might be a player, but the defense is bare of top flight talent. No safeties, no CB depth, and no DE’s.

The OL is pathetic. Nothing else matters.

We hired a HC no one else wanted, an OL coach who has a bad history, a DC that has already been fired as a play caller, and a first time GM whose FA signees have been abysmal.

We can’t kick or punt, and we have no electric returners.

Our owners are clueless and distracted by their other, far more valuable, but debt ridden pro franchise.

We’ve played two terrible preseason games, and one decent half of another that was riddled with penalties.

As my handle suggests, I’ve seen many bad Bucs teams. This one looks awfully familiar.

  44. Buc1987 Says:

Oh wait…Brady got 1 TD tonight. Yet threw 2 picks.

  45. Buc1987 Says:

Bucs Fan Since ’76…great points but did it look like a bad team to you on Monday night even with all the penalties? Or do you think the Bengals just had a bad night? I’m not being sarcastic or anything. I’m just wondering.

  46. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Mo Downs

That said, I’d like to know why Jameis doesn’t have a single TD pass, yet.

That’s a very valid question and concerns me as well. Of course as we just read Mariota doesn’t have a single TD running or passing. But I do not care about Mariota and I’m not down on him either. He’ll have growing pains like Fameis but I believe he’ll be fine as well.

But I respect your question Mo. I’m beginning to worry about our receiving corps. Thankfully VJAX is VJAX but ME hasn’t been open or running strong routes this year…I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt on the hammy but clearly things have to change.

Louis Murphy and VJAX are the only two receivers who seem to have shown up this year. Rannell Hall has been a pleasant surprise but Bell hasn’t even flashed and has taken some truly brain dead penalites. Where the eff is ASJ…another beautiful “looking” player who doesn’t show up in the games?

The entire team lacked effort tonight I concede that. It needs to be fixed. I have faith it will. Others OBVIOUSLY do not!!! LMAO

I’m really starting to see more promise in our OL and more worry in our receiving corps. I hope I’m wrong and that ASJ finally plays 6-5 instead of 5-6..able to actually catch a football and fight for it…that ME won’t struggle all year with a bad hammy.

And FSU guys…..is this ankle thing going to be with us all season. Has he had a history of ankle injuries or are we just over worrying about his physical condition.

  47. MadMax Says:

Charades…..keep calm and stay the course…..you’ll see.

  48. Buc1987 Says:

SPBF..I don’t know about the ankle thingy. He clearly was limping again. Then when he was limping after the game Barber said it wasn’t a limp, that was him walking with swagger. Whatever the hell that means, it looked like a limp to me.

  49. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Jeebus guys you are like women who suffer from battered wife syndrome.

Listen I’ve only been a Bucs fan since the Sam Wyche era when I moved to Tampa. Prior to that growing up in Greater Cincinnati I was a Bengals fan.
My teams have been called the Bungles and the Sucs. I get the frustration of losing over a long period of time. But how can you all forget the Dungy/Gruden SB run. That team was great and they came from the same pile of dung you are all complaining about tonight!!!

But you have become so obsessed…so strong in your desire to whine and talk about how BAD we are you even resort to exagerrating NEGATIVES!!!

We hired a HC no one else wanted

A coach nobody else wanted? Really? There are only so many HC jobs open in the NFL every year. The fact that teams may be happy with their current coach does NOT mean that other coaches are not wanted if there is NO OPENING!!!

Now not wanted? Again let’s go to actual factual reports…from BPSN when Lovie was hired…

The Detroit Lions were also interested in Smith, but he preferred the Bucs job. He has previous ties to the organization having served as an assistant under Tony Dungy.

  50. Buc1987 Says:

Also he only played 2 years of college ball. The ankle injury happened about mid season last year. Never had it his first year. Yet still how much can be on-going with injuries for only 2 seasons. He’s only 21 yrs old. He’s still a baby.

  51. Buc1987 Says:

The team went 10-6 under Raheem the Dream. Then they flopped the next year, but they never spent any money on his teams. What a shame. Maybe if they would just sit on a coach for more than 2 seasons, we would get somewhere. I know Rah had 3 seasons, but 10-6 with virtually no talent on your team…

    —————————————————————————–

I’m a cardiologist and not an orthopedist, but I commented to my family when I watched Gruden’s QB Camp, that Jameis Winston’s ankle mortise looked “loose or floppy” during all of his dropbacks on that show! In my humble “heart doctor” non-professional opinion, I believe Winston will have chronic ankle problems his whole career.

    tickrdr

  54. Bucs Fan Since '76 Says:

Buc 1987, I thought we looked great on Monday for the first two quarters despite the penalties, and the Bengals are a playoff team. But two good periods and 10 bad ones suggests the team is bad. Even bad teams will put a few quality periods together and win some games. My point is this team has few really good players, a lot of has been coaches, and a GM with zero track record, and two bad FA years.

The history of the Glazer boys is terrible too. And why do you think Chip Kelly did not come here? It certainly was not because he felt the organization was great, and the team was loaded with talent.

I’ve been saying this for a long time. The franchise desperately needs a full time president who understands the NFL business. Someone with a history of success who can set the agenda and lead the rest of the organization. This current group is all over the place, just like all bad franchises. It just feels eerily familiar.

  55. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @tickdr

Now I get your moniker! Thanks for that medical input. Kind of a scary post.

For we laypeople can the ankle mortise? be wrapped, or prehaps even surgically corrected in the off season? Is there a special brace that might help?

  56. tickrdr Says:

    @SPBF:

Again, I am not an orthopedic doc, so my opinion does not count. The ankle mortise is formed by the distal ends of the tibia and fibula, which sit on the talus bone, and form the ankle joint, with numerous ligaments holding it all together.
Think “strapping” tape, which keep the bones from moving beyond their accepted range of motion. I personally feel that the “looseness” or “floppiness” of his ankles is due to his history of being a baseball pitcher, which required a very long stride, and “push” off the mound to deliver an effective fastball. Likely great for his pitching motion, but not great for his football throwing motion, which leaves the ankle relatively in jeopardy, especially following a long stride.
Again, JMHO, and not based on legit medical opinion., because I’m a heart doctor, and what do I know.

    tickrdr

  57. White Tiger Says:

Hah SPBF, that’s going to be a mouthful, but for you it probably won’t be all that difficult.

Besides, it’s lame. If you’re going to give someone a nickname, at least don’t include one that just dominated his previous team and also prove how little ‘nole fans know about NFL (real) football.

It’s also nowhere near as funny as my pet name for you.

Your book of nonsense, but I think what you were trying to say was that Mariota had another strong outing (which of course was the TITLE of the article). See when he was pulled at halftime, he’d jus engineered another scoring drive. to pull the Titans to within 17-10. His stats for the half he actually played: 7-of-11 for 99 yards, and a 92.6 rating. He finished by completing 7 of his final 8 passes.

See, Mariota keeps improving, and just makes everybody better – mostly by being very efficient with the football. Unlike our rookie QB, Mariota didn’t throw a pick or fumble and has shown improvement every week…even the one where the other defense game planned for him…

When lashing out against the guy I like, in order to make the guy you like, look better – animpressively goofy approach – make sure your guy isn’t full of suck (right now). Because for all the hype and ALL the INT’s (3) and all the sacks (7) – fameis has taken…

…he’s thrown exactly the same amount of TD’s as Mariota!

Stats are pretty good, except Mariota seems to have adapted faster to the Titans insufficient offensive line – than fameis has to his – and that’s what has you pi$$ed. Not me, I’m just introducing it to you an a way you don’t like.

Doesn’t make it wrong, just because I’m right.

Buc1987 – Since you asked (repetitively): your prediction about a month ago was that if Lovie didn’t win at least 4 he was “toast” – and even though you wouldn’t own up to a specific number of wins – you did say you believed the win total would be “more dramatic” than 4…and even though 6 is more than 4…6 really seem all that dramtic…to me.

TWO is like so NOT dramatic

Don’t get me wrong; all in all – and on the football field – fameis will be fine. It’s just that it’s going to take a LOT more time than most of you ‘nole fans have – which is pure sugar for us Buc fans who wanted Mariota. My bet is, most of you’ll disappear for a couple of seasons..

THIS GAME WAS A DISGRACE. The defense obviously forgot their was a game going on, the OLine was as clueless as George Bush, and WE GOT TORN APART BY JOSH MCOWN OF ALL QBS and CLEVELAND OF ALL TEAMS!!!!!!!. Unacceptable performance by the vets, they should know better

tickrdr… wow, a QB with a bad ankle, say it aint so. The Bucs should have done a better medical evaluation. That is a worrisome possibility looking ahead.

White Tiger…I’ll be here regardless. I was here 2 1/2 years before Winston. I’ll be here no matter how long it takes.

We both got what we wanted outta Lovie with that 2-14 record….A tank in the last game for #1 overall pick and best overall position (waiverwire) to be in. This season’s all about kicking back and praying for no serious injuries so we can have honest opportunites to see GROWTH, PERIOD. And GOD I hope we can see sum lol.
