Licht: Jameis Winston Will Have “More Than Normal” Reps In Preseason

July 28th, 2015

lovie 0912In August, Bucs fans will see plenty of Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback.

General manager Jason Licht told Steve Duemig of WDAE-AM 620 this evening that Jameis won’t be treated like a veteran when it comes to preseason games.

Tampa Bay coaches’ grooming plan, Licht said, is “more than normal reps” for Jameis.

He added that he considers that typical for teams in the Bucs’ position with a highly-drafted QB.

Joe sure hopes that means more than normal reps for the first-team Bucs offensive line, and plenty of the quick-throw offense Licht referenced.

Hopefully there’s some protection for him so some ambitious second-teamer on the other side of the ball doesn’t give him the old ankle-twist……more reps means more exposure for sure…….double-edged sword, isn’t it?

  2. BuccaneEric75 Says:

I say let him play all 16 Quarters. The more experience, the better.

  3. The Real Malloy Says:

I agree with BuccaneEric75…….ok maybe not 16 quarters, but play him……..play him ALOT. He’s not made of glass….we need to win. If we protect him from injury and use him less, we might as well not plan on competing this season. He’s a football junkie….let him go sling it around against the 1’s, 2’s AND 3’s. It will only build confidence…

  4. Howard Cosell Says:

Until September when the Cannon starts a few games to ease
Jameis’ learning curve. Jameis has never played against against ballistic defensive lineman. It would be nice for him to see what they can do from the
safety of the sideline before he steps into the line of fire.

Don’t worry though, Howard thinks that Jameis will start week one.
That’s how they do #1 picks.

  5. Tom Edrington Says:

You guys forget that he’s used to 12 games. So four preseason, you’d prefer to have him worn out by game 8, seriously?

  6. BuccaneEric75 Says:

He would not be worn out. It’s 30-40 throws a game. It’s easier than him throwing 95 MPH fastballs. He’s young. He’d be fine.

  7. BuccaneEric75 Says:

And his arm didn’t look worn out in the Clemson and Oregon games. Unless you think he wouldn’t have been able to throw in the Championship game.

  8. StPeteBucsFan Says:

This seems like an obvious strategy. I want to see how that virtual trainer works out. Fameis can look at every NFL defense…see how quickly the DB’s can react and recover. He’ll probably throw plenty of virtual interceptions which hopefully will help his judgment when he hits the field for real.

If we spent the 1st overall pick on him, he should start. Like Joe, I think if Lovie starts Glennon then the hot seat starts. Especially if Glennon starts losing. If Winston is the football junkie we know he is, then he is preparing himself the best he can. Jameis has the weapons and OC to be taking snaps on the 1st game of the season. Seige the day.
