Clearing Jameis Winston’s Plate?

The Bucs’ opening-day opponent is having his schedule adjusted

The guy who hopes to rain on the Buccaneers’ season in 94 days is about to have his schedule adjusted.

Joe’s talking about a report from Tennessee that the Titans will be dialing back media time and public appearances of Marcus Mariota, the No. 2 overall pick and the guy getting their first-team quarterback reps.

Beat writer Jim Wyatt shared the news yesterday.

This brings Joe to Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback. Joe doesn’t think the Bucs have gone overboard keeping Jameis busy with media requests and promotional activities. But perhaps more is coming? Or will the team put Jameis in a cone of study to prepare him for opening day against Mariota in Tampa?

The Custodian of Canton, eye-RAH! Kaufman of The Tampa Tribune, noted on SiriusXM NFL Radio last week that Jameis appears to be the sole focus of the Bucs’ current media campaign to sell tickets. And Kaufman noted it’s all about selling tickets.

It was a fair point, considering if the Bucs didn’t have ticket sales concerns, then they likely would be far more interested in marketing proven stars and community standouts, such as Gerald McCoy and Vincent Jackson.

But the focus is Jameis.

It’ll be interesting to see how the Bucs hand Jameis in these critical weeks leading up to him first taking the field in Minnesota — 65 short days away.

You know, that might be an indication that Mariota isn’t learning as quickly as coaches hoped. If he was retaining information at an acceptable level, then media attention would not be such a concern…

  2. StPeteBucsFan Says:

As an original Mariota supporter who shared my concerns about Fameis, mostly off field, I’m hardly a Winstonite. But as a Bucs fan I’m certainly now a fan of Fameis.

And so yes as a Buc’s fan I’m biased but I’m not over the top like some Winstonites.

With that perspective I must say that I give both Fameis and the Bucs A’s for the way they’ve handled everything to this point.

I think both player and team have done an outstanding job to this point, at least in terms of this point of this piece and managing Fameis off field media and other activities. He’s been out in the community at Lightning games, charity golf touneys, hospitals…the Bucs and Fameis have done all the right things.,

If they are half as successful on the field as they been handling Fameis introduction into the league off the field, then my prediction of ten wins and one and one in the playoffs will come true.

  3. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Oops typo….should be one and DONE in the playoffs not one and one.

IF they reach the playoffs they’re not going to make it past the first round but at least it’s a start like the Lightning last year.

  4. bucs4lyfe Says:

wow so they just gave up the booty to mariota like that. I would love to see him and Winston battle it out game 1 of the season but it doesn’t matter if he’s taking first team reps or not he has to outshine glennon and show he’s ready day 1 because if he’s making routine rookie mistakes like mccown did in practice then the only way he starts is if bucs aren’t in win now mode but sales tickets mode which again would show why this franchise has been losing for so long, the glazers made losing a habit

  5. America's Bucs Fan Says:

The Titan’s don’t have to convince their fan base that Mariota is worthy of being the face of their franchise. The Bucs aren’t in that enviable situation

  6. Patrickbucs Says:

I thought if we drafted Winston all these FSU fans would purchase remaining seats? I guess key board posts actually aren’t true after all.

  7. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Joe, feel free to delete since it’s not on topic, but..

I see Tim Wright has been released. Depending on how Logan performs this season, maybe the trade will be looked at differently in the long run.

  8. tmaxcon Says:

or maybe the Titans organization is concerned about the well being of the Audience that is bored to death with this young man’s outgoing personality. He will be fine as qb, if he can stay healthy.

If you look at the two from purely a marketing / exposure standpoint Mariota is not even in the same league as jameis when it comes to earning potential. even with the false accusations against him, if Jameis wins and turns the bucs around despite lovie. He will be the endorsement darling…

I’m telling you…”Jameis Winston for Joe’s Crab Shack”. The way to handle something embarrassing is head on. Turn it into a positive and laugh at yourself.

    love and warrick dunn

you just made me want Joes for lunch. thanks.

That smile and with his personality being so infectious if you couple that with even moderate sucess, Jameis will explode from a marketing standpoint.

  11. America's Bucs Fan Says:

    Tmaxcon – keep dreaming

    Love WD – good call

  12. tmaxcon Says:

    America’s Bucs Fam

I am not dreaming. I could careless none of that jack comes my way… If for one minute you are going to compare mariota’s and winstons personalities from you can’t tell me with a straight face that Marketing agencies would prefer the quiet shy guy over the guy who stars gravitate to. Come on man. He might be a good qb and very well maybe better than jameis at some point I sincerely doubt it but hands down personality goes to Jameis.

I usually don’t but I’m in agreement with tmax on this one.

    I concur tmax.

  15. drdneast Says:

Bucs4lyfe you really are an idiot.
The Bucs didn’t start winning consistently until the Glazers took ownership and brought in Dungy and Gruden.
    Geeeesh.

Since I tangle with you over Lovie and have in the past over Fameis let me agree with you on this thread.

If Fameis does NOTHING else…and he has even a decent career…he will be a media darling. He has the smile, charm, and is quotable.

  17. Buc1987 Says:

    This just in :

Marcus Mariota is a P word!

  18. America's Bucs Fan Says:

    Tmaxcon

You have to remember that the Titans play right in the middle of the Bible belt so Mariota’s personality and squeaky clean, Christian life fit perfectly there. Plus, their female fan base will blow up over the shy, quiet handsome guy that is dynamic on the field. It doesn’t surprise me at all that his jersey is the #1 selling top in the NFL right now.

Jameis on the other hand still has a lot to prove, and as a loyal Bucs fan, I hope like heck that he does

    Mariota isn’t a punter?

  20. Skyline Crew Says:

Since Mariota is wowing and amazing the coaches and players over there I don’t think it is a learning problem. From the article, which Joe of course wouldn’t put on there “The Titans plan to take more of that off Mariota’s plate.

“Just how he has handled everything, it has been impressive,” Whisenhunt said. “There has been a lot going on with him as the second pick, the Heisman Trophy winner. He has had a lot of commitments, a lot of pull in different directions.

“But he has done a good job with keeping focused on football and how he has handled himself with the team. And in the quarterback skills, too, of course. He’s done a nice job.”

  21. Skyline Crew Says:

Let’s just hope we picked the right QB.

  22. America's Bucs Fan Says:

    Skyline

    Let’s hope so

  23. loser/winston Says:

@ st pete bucs fan/ only a matter of time. this was all a p.r move a sell some tickets move. they will pay for this for years. money grubbing dish rags! they will be sorry like just about most of the moves they have made the last 5 years. and you will see mariota kick the bucs a**. cant wait!

  24. loser/winston Says:

glazers should have took father tony d . advice he knows a hell of a lot more than lovie that’s for sure.

  25. loser/winston Says:

oh ya! TMaxcom/ Winston has a great attitude please kid is a moron like you!

  26. Joe Says:

oh ya! TMaxcom/ Winston has a great attitude please kid is a moron like you!

Yup. A guy who was academically accepted into Stanford is a “moron.” As to your username, Winston has lost, what, five games in his life? Might want to brush up on your vocabulary. “Winner” might be more appropriate.

(Why does Joe see this user being banned in the near future? Joe can just smell it the way he is spamming each thread with anti-Jameis lies. smh)

Are things that boring on Jags’ sites or have you lost faith in Blake Bortles?

  27. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    @loser

“you will see mariota kick the bucs a**. cant wait!”

Dude I try to respect everybody’s “opinion”. But you lost me with the “can’t wait’.
You do know this blog is called Joe Bucs FAN. The posters are almost universally Buc fans. Most them of are smart enough to accept some critical points of view but out and out cheering against the Bucs indeed makes you a LOSER on this blog.

  28. Jaboo is #1 Says:

Buc fans sound like FSU fans when they first heard Jimbo was starting Jaboo over Some other guy.

No one at FSU fan base expected they would be winning a Natty after EJ Maneul left.

Tampa Bucs have the next NFL Rookie of the year at the help and they are in for an awesome suprise.

No matter where Jaboo has played, from HS to NFL.. his team mates love him.

He will take the blame for weakness and give his team mates credit for any success. He will not accept defeat. He is a competitor.

Jameis entered the draft this season early knowing Tampa had the #1 pic and the team had wanted him. Jameis believed in Tampa. Tampa Coaches believed in Jameis.

Now Tampa fans are about to see why.

    Mariota? It’s Tennessee. Who cares.
