Licht Talks Offensive Line Decisions

After his last pick of the evening, grabbing guard Ali Marpet in the late in the second round from Division III Hobart College, Bucs general manager Jason Licht held a press conference to explain his picks.

When it comes to Penn State tackle Donovan Smith, Licht said the Bucs are penciling him in as the starting left tackle. Licht thought Smith was a solid all-around blocker who did not get bullrushed. When he faced stud defensive end Randy Gregory of Nebraska, he manhandled the Cornhuskers star.

Licht noted he got solid intel on Smith from his good friend, Houston Texans coach Bill O’Brien. He was Smith’s coach his first two seasons at Penn State.

As far as Marpet, Licht stated the way he blew up at the Senior Bowl and the NFL Scouting Combine put him on the radar of the Bucs, and it is foolish for fans to judge Marpet based on where he went to college.

Good picks. Building via the draft. The future is bright! Go Bucs! Welcome to Tampa

  3. Solinor Says:

Even though these were not sexy picks, they were absolutely needed. Jameis going to be safe next year. Go Bucs!

  4. Lovethepewter Says:

Rumor is Seattle was about to take Ali which is why we jumped up. So no he wouldn’t have been there. I guess if one of the top franchises in the NFL like him then he’s a good pick.

  5. Espo Says:

    Foolish fans!

    That Lovie Smith hates offense.

I always think it’s funny and ridiculous for anyone (but especially fans) to grade a team’s draft. I was all in for Jameis, but how in the hell can I say that was a great pick before he’s done anything? I just don’t get it. I’m also going to go out on a limb and say not one of us has ever seen a quarter of Hobart college play football. I don’t know if any of us have even heard of Hobart college. I still don’t even know what state it’s in. So I’m pretty sure I’m tied for the least qualified person to grade that pick. My opinion is that it is a bit of a weird pick, but that opinion is completely ignorant (since I’ve never seen him play, or even heard of him). I’m excited for next season, but I am always excited for next season. But I refuse to say the Bucs had a great draft, nor will I say they had a terrible draft. As of right now, they just had a draft. Let’s wait until after the Tennessee game to grade the draft, because we all know the result of that game is going to be how most fans judge the draft. At least until week 2.

  13. White Tiger prefers Mariota Says:

Jameis required these picks…now if we could just get him moved into Derrick Brooks bedroom, I’m sure all will be fine.

Meanwhile – we’re down to the dreggs at RDE options…

I really do hope their fixation with Kid Fameis is worth the huge commitment.

  14. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

    Next pick Jamison Crowder.

  15. Capt.Tim Says:

Think we drafted very intelligently today. Not the norm for this team.
It just feels like things have changed for the better.

  16. See Below Says:

Death to Mariota fans! Skyway or gun shot. Bye bye.

  17. Getaclue Says:

I love it they usually don’t draft anybody I have on my board and I’m three for three and I even had them moving back into the second round though it was not how I was expected and they got better value the way they did it and I had the Titans getting green beckham in the second round only predictions I made was Winston Donovan smith marpet trading into the second round and green beckham and I have the messages before it happened to prove it ohhh I love all the know it alls on here I can back my sh** up though

  18. WinstonBomb3 Says:

    QB of the future

    Jameis over marioitta A++
I really not to sure about Smith over Oregon’s tackle and can’t help but pull for Ali Marpet. I know we need lineman to protect the Franchise but Randy Gregory would’ve given maximum value

  19. MadMax Says:

lol Getaclue….welcome aboard the “eyesfortalent”….we’re sailing again today btw.

I was the frst to ever start pimping Marpet here….Its somewhere in the history….I remember it, I was pimping Senquez Golson at the time. Both guys were considered 4th round talent. I had a feeling Marpet would go in the 2nd though as he became more popular…..I guarantee you he was about to be snatched up by NE. Thats why we traded up, and he’s going to prove he’s worth it.

Look, I know he didnt play against a lot of talent. But watch his combine and look at his numbers, plus his stats. He’ll prove he was worth the trade up.

  20. Brandon Says:

    MadMax:

And I was “pimping” a guy thought to be no better than a 4th or 5th rounder, 1st round OG Laken Tomlinson, who was my personal choice as standout of the week at the Senior Bowl. I thought Marpet was excellent as well though…. but still…. 1st round > 2nd round…. advantage me 🙂

  21. BFFL Says:

Love the Ali pick but I’m not reading very promising reviews about Donovan.

  22. JMan Says:

Bucs should grab Tyler Lockett today. Special teams dynamo

  23. JMan Says:

    Oh wait
