Keeping Winston “Clean”

Bucs T Demar Dotson discusses the challenges that lay ahead for the Bucs with a rookie signal-caller.

Demar Dotson discussed the challenges ahead for the Bucs with a rookie signal-caller.

Reality is sinking in on the Marcus Mariota Gang, like the coming of fall and cold weather, that the Bucs never really intended to get their man.

Even this crowd will admit Tampa Bay needed a quarterback worse than a Bucs fan sitting on the east side of the Den of Depression on a September afternoon needs a cold beer.

But with that rookie quarterback, Jameis Winston, there comes responsibility for others on the team, Bucs right (left?) tackle Demar Dotson said today when speaking at One Buc Palace.

“The first thing [a rookie quarterback] is going to need is an offensive line that is going to protect him,” Dotson said. “Obviously, we have to do a better job than what we gave Josh [McCown] last year. Especially with a young guy that is coming in.

“[George] Warhop, our offensive line coach, he is more stressing that we have to play better because, with a rookie quarterback, there is going to be some challenges. There is going to be some up and there are going to be some downs. We have to make him feel comfortable as best as we can. So it is on us to keep him as clean as we can.”

That is going to be the key to the Bucs this season: How can the offensive line keep Winston off the ground and give him a chance to succeed? Look, the Bucs were wretched up front last year. Just horrid. Arguably, the worst in the NFL.

Adding two rookie offensive linemen is a risk, but could those two rookies actually be worse than Anthony Collins and the revolving door they had at right guard?

Additionally, Dotson noted there has been no decision on whether he will play left tackle or remain at right tackle. He prefers to stay on the right side but said if the Bucs believe he can better help the team on the left side, he’s all for it; anything to help.

I just read Jameis Winston reportedly recruiting La’el Collins for Bucs.If we land this 1st round draft pick, as a free agent that would solidify our place in the NFC South !!! Better protection means better running better passing more wins. All that to say if the guy is indeed innocent of the speculative chargers ..

I’m sorry for being off topic, but not sure how else to get a question or suggestion out there.

    2 things-
    1. I think this site could use a weekly mailbag column where people send in questions to Joe and he answers selective ones. Not a group chat, just mailbag questions.
    2. Any update on the Bucs new scoreboards that are supposed to be installed for this season?

    Bitter much?

People are so self-important these days. It’s all about ME, and MY DISAPPOINTMENT. Why didn’t they listen to me? They will suck and then they will see how IMPORTANT MY CHOICE was.

Maybe he was metaphorically speaking to the style of play the Bucs will be playing this upcoming season.

The games seem like they are going to be much more enjoyable to go attend at the stadium and not just because the improved play on the field.

There is no denying that I was advocating for the selection of Mariota, but I also said that I would trust the Buccaneers investigation into Winston’s past. I still believe Mariota will be a success in the NFL, but I will be supporting my team and rooting for Mariota to start out his career 0-1. I will not be looking for the first opportunity to say I told you so. I look forward to hearing I told you so from LandWD, 1987, pick6, luther, Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. and others who have been all in with Winston from the beginning (after he proves it on the field). Go Bucs!

Looks like in trying to be a man of high morals, you yourself have judged someone based off your hate, with no evidence to support your hatred. Good luck, you’ll need it.

Mariota will have a career like all the speed offense guys- RG3, Kaepernick, etc.
as soon as they cut off the run- and force him to stay in the pocket- his inability to throw to any option but his first will be his downfall. 5 years- .500 career, off to anonymity.

Jamie is the best QB since Andrew Luck. It will take one more year for us to draft DE, Safety, etc. And for O-line to play like a unit.

Then we are contending every year. 10 years of playoffs and domination

Well it could have something to do with that liberal pos MSNBC and what they said this morning on their Morning Joe show that might have added to some anger. I don’t watch that channel but some people do.

They were reviewing the film “The Hunting Ground.”

From David Whitlley Orlando Sentinel :

“It’s impossible to watch her, it’s impossible to watch her parents, it’s impossible to look at the events without looking at Winston and looking at the people in Tallahassee who let this young girl down. Who was shoved into the bathroom and her face shoved into the floor and raped and nobody, nobody supported her in Tallahassee because they had a national championship to win,” Scarborough said.

“After all these charges,” Scarborough said, “not allegations, but charges.”

Actually, Winston was never charged with anything.

“The No. 1 draft pick, after all that talk about the NFL this last fall, they were going to look at character and character was going to count finally and not just athletic prowess,” Scarborough said. “Well then, the NFL doesn’t care about rape charges or character.”

So what was the NFL supposed to do with Winston? Not draft a top quarterback prospect who’d been cleared by two investigations?

It’s the same mind-set that convicted Duke lacrosse players and Virginia frat boys. Scarborough didn’t even use the “alleged” qualifier when rendering his verdict:

Kinsman was shoved to the floor and raped. Winston did it.

Scarborough knows this because he saw it in a movie.

  56. WalkdaPlank Says:

Offensive line is not just important for keeping Winston on his feet, but for opening holes for the RB’s to take the heat off Winston when he gets jumpy and forces passes. We all know it’s going to happen, the question is how much and how will he deal with it. More protection and a better run game will help him tremendously.

I would be thrilled beyond words if we got Collins from LSU. He would be better at left than anyone on the roster. That would also let Dotson and Smith battle it out for right. That would be great. Dotson shouldn’t automatically our starter simply because he played “okay” last year. He could use the competition. And if we had the means, Mankins and EDS could use a push too.

Let’s not forget that Andrew Luck was drafted by a pathetic Colts team devoid if stars on the offense and defense and he reached the playoffs the first year. So whiners beware, the standard has been set. If the Buccaneers don’t win 9-10 games it will be because Winston is not the player he’s been projected to be PERIOD. 87 I think the point is Luck went to a worse team than the Bucs and took them to the playoffs. If Winston is all he’s cracked up to be, there shouldn’t be a huge learning curve and this team should start winning this year.

Which, I agree with. I’m not expecting the guy to be perfect but he needs to back up all the pro ready/football genius talk in year 1 and win some games. With all the hype around the kid anything less than 8-8 with 4k yards and a 5:4 TD ratio will be disappointing.

Regarding the last 3 teams with number ones

Houston before going 2-14 for the #1, went 28-20 in three years prior.
KC before going 2-14 for the #1, went 21-27 in three years prior.
Indy before going 2-14 for the #1, went 36-12 in three years prior.
Tampa Bay before going 2-14 for the #1, went 15-31 in three years prior.

I expect improvement, but, I don’ t see the Colts as comparable.

  71. Jfat Says:

Really? You’d take Wayne, Donnie Avery and a rookie Fleener over Vjax, Evans and ASJ? Or Vic Ballard over any of our RBs? Their 26th ranked defense maybe?

You’re either over estimating that Colts team or selling the Bucs short. I’ll give them the edge @oline and maybe coaching but that’s about it. And they went 11-5, 8-8 isn’t too much to ask I don’t think.

Why would you say that? He’ll have his ups and downs just like any rookie. I don’t think anyone really believes we are going to the playoffs this year. And L&L bought themselves a few more years. We’re just happy that now we have a chance. So you got your dig in so just deal with it. He’s our QB and I don’t see that changing for a long while. And BTW, I don’t think you’re a troll but those who are, WGAF that you guys even exist?

    The rest of

  75. Jfat Says:

@Love…The Colts had the best regular season Qb of all time prior to their 2-14 season. Houston had arguably the best running game in the league during that stretch, shockingly they went 2-14 the year Foster was banged up. 20-27 is bad btw, not going to talk about KC.

The peices are there for the Bucs to be successful, we just haven’t had a QB. Jameis should be able to elevate this team to a .500 record.

  76. Buc1987 Says:

Jfat..and that’s all I’m saying anyways. I’m hoping for 7-9 or 8-8 with a weak division and a soft schedule. Hoping NOT expecting. If they only have 6 wins I won’t be shocked.

  77. WS99 Says:

Dawg dawg dawg. Watching draft academy. Breion mz. Breezybo can get it. She got better hands than Herron. Sign her A$$ up. Literally sign her A$$. Lol

  78. Buc1987 Says:

Hell 2 rookie starters on that putrid oline from last year. They really have not addressed DE as far as I’m concerned. Who’s playing MLB again? Carter? Conte is our safety? Really? Lots of question marks STILL on this team.

  79. RP Says:

Dotson sucked on the left side. He’s telling that as well when he says he prefers the right side. The new guy Smith better be our left tackle, or we need to do some more shopping.

  80. WS99 Says:

Winston is a great kid who made one mistake, he really should have paid for the crab legs. 🙂

  81. WS99 Says:

Safety will go to Everett or Alexander. Imo. I know he’s a lb but he looks like an NFL safety. Aka cam chancellor

  82. WS99 Says:

And Kenny bell will be a beast. Just watch. Personally I’m hating the clay pick cuz bell could probably return the ball better. I wish we had o’leary. Oh well two tears in a bucket.

  83. Jfat Says:

And that’s fine 87. I just don’t think Jameis should get a complete pass on this season because he’s a rookie is all. I could deal with less than .500 if he improves as the year goes on. Or if the defense chokes games away. Not bashing the guy.

I just think the days of waiting for a rookie to develop are over, year 1 should be solid, not necessarily spectacular. By year 3 I want to see pro-bowl play.

  84. Buc1987 Says:

I just don’t know. I’m conflicted. One part of me tells me that the tank job was in early on and I should expect big things next season because of it.

The other part of me looks at the defensive roster, the o-line and asks how did we improve from last season?

  85. Jfat Says:

    One word. Koetter.

  86. WalkdaPlank Says:

Luck’s Colts were worse? Just a season before they drafted him they had a huge playoff streak with Payton Manning, then he goes down and all of a sudden the Colts suck. Then they get Luck and go right back to their old selves. Fukk the Colts.

  87. Buc1987 Says:

Jfat…number 1 overall? Hell yes he should look like a #1 overall player in the draft in his first season.

I won’t give him a pass or make BS excuses for him just because I’m a Nole.

If there is a good reason why they are losing and it’s not Winston’s fault, I’ll say so. Vice versa if they are losing because he’s doing stupid stuff out there, I’ll say so.

I’m a much bigger Buc fan than Noles fan yet I love college football more than pro’s. Strange, like me.

“Then they get Luck and go right back to their old selves.”

How do you suppose that happened?

    2 words. Franchise QB.

“I may be slow in that 40 but on that field I’m deadly.” – Jameis Winston

  92. Buc1987 Says:

Okay I’m all in then. Jameis Winston IS a franchise QB. I expect BIG things from Winston in his rookie year.

There we go! I think he can do it… I bet he thinks he can do it too, which is awesome. Wake me up in September!
