New Bucs defensive end George Johnson

Joe’s not sure why, but the day always seems brighter when Casey Phillips is delivering insider news from One Buc Palace.

In the video below, Phillips and Buccaneers.com multimedia guru Scott Smith dive into a couple of nuggets learned by talking to Tampa Bay defensive coaches yesterday.

Smith explains that the Bucs aren’t looking for $3 million defensive end pick-up George Johnson to be the next Michael Johnson, who was pegged as an every-down guy at right defensive end before he decided he didn’t want to be a Buccaneer.

The Bucs, per Smith, see Johnson more as a guy playing close to two-thirds of the snaps and play plenty on the left side.

What’s clear to Joe is the Bucs will be rotating defensive ends and playing with the hot hand, regardless of the name on the back of the jersey. With the current crew of no-names, the opening day starters could be Larry English and Jacquies Smith, and just as easily be T.J. Fatinikun and George Johnson.

Enjoy the video below. (For sanity’s sake, Joe is ignoring the Mike Jenkins chatter in here.)

Im with ya on the mike jenkins talk Joe. I guess if he can really prove he’s the best man, let him play, but I love Jonathan Banks and would be extremely pissed if he was sitting on the bench most of the year

  2. Captain Doom Says:

whatever happened to steven means and the other dude drafted the same year. both were supposed to have promise.

    they still on the team?

  3. Patrick in VA Says:

Couldn’t a similar rotation happen with the DBs that we’re trying to work out with the DL? I’m not sure about the nuances of the positions so maybe a rotation with the DBs doesn’t work the same way. Just wondering if it has to be a situation where it’s either Banks or Jenkins and not maybe both of them in different situations throughout the game

    George Johnson “America’s 2/3 DE”

  5. Brandon Says:

Steven Means was cut after training camp last season and Will Gholston is still with the team. These are questions that could’ve been easily answered by looking on the Bucs official web site roster. Has it gotten so bad in this country that people are now too lazy to surf the internet?

  6. bucs4lyfe Says:

verner is too small I really really hope they slide him into the nickel corner spot on passing downs

  7. Buccfan37 Says:

One can’t make the mistake in thinking that this year’s Bucs team won’t be improved over last year’s effort. Three wins will do that, that’s a piece of cake. They will quadruple those two wins, count on it.

  8. LargoBuc Says:

Our defensive ends really have alot to prove. If Frazier just runs the same repetive plays, our defensive ends will probably struggle. Our zone will get torched. There is a time and place for Tampa 2 but we dont have the DE’s to pull it off.

  9. SOEbuc Says:

Can we please stop with this “America’s _” crap. The rest of of America hates the bucs and thinks we are one of the worst teams in the league, respectively with a 30-70 record

  10. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

I sense a run at Bennett is coming especially with them stating Johnson will primarily line up on the left side.

  11. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Who gives a S@$! how the rest of the country feels about the Bay. One thing for certain we all of a sudden seem to be the topic of everyone’s conversation. And maybe some of us will stop saying America’s QB once some of you stop mentioning a record that America’s QB had nothing to do with accumulating. Think about it a sec it’ll come to you.

  12. Joe Says:

Can we please stop with this “America’s _” crap.

    No.

  13. Connor Says:

We are easily the least covered team in the league and everyone thinks we’re a joke. Which we kind of are. So any “America’s” crap shouldn’t be used toward the Bucs until we prove we actually are relevant and are a contender.

——————————————————————————————-I totally agree, and what a find she was, by the Bucs!

  15. John McKillop Says:

I don’t understand why Mike Jenkins was re-signed, in what world is he better than a fast rising Johnathon Banks, I know in my world he isn’t. This guy is a waste of money and a roster spot.

  16. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

    @ Captain Doom

Last I heard Means got picked up by the Ravens last year after he got cut here. As already stated Gholston is still a Buc.

  17. Mike10 Says:

I’m confused, isn’t Scott Smith usually on the other side of the microphone?

  18. Geno714 Says:

What is wrong with the cameraman? Why the Scott Smith close ups that take Casey out of the shot? He should panning up and down Casey. Scott should be heard and not seen. No offense, Scott.

  19. drdneast Says:

Tampa Bay Buccaneer fans = “America’s Fans.”
Geno, Casey is nothing but fluff. I’m sure you think she is really qualified to be a sports journalist because she is “pretty.”
When are you morons going to wise up.

Go Casey go Casey she so awesome
