Donovan Smith Used To Pro Style

When Bill O’Brien, now running the Houston Texans, was at Penn State, he was in the midst of restoring a former powerhouse.

BOB was a pro-style kind of coordinator, and BOB’s offense, led by quarterback Christian Hackenberg and Bucs second-round pick Donovan Smith at left tackle, looked strong.

Since, James Franklin, not a pro style guy, took over after BOB left for Houston and Penn State’s offense grew stale and Hackenberg, who looked to be on the cusp of one of college football’s best quarterbacks, regressed.

Now with Smith being drafted by the Bucs this evening in the second round, Smith believed his experienced with BOB has steeled him for life in the NFL.

“I loved it,” Smith said of playing for BOB. “I credit him to this day for the two years that I had him. I learned the ins and outs. Breaking in [in college] and learning what an NFL offense is all about. That will help me transition better [with the Bucs].”

That warms Joe’s heart that Smith said he played good ball under BOB and in a pro style offense. That really should grease the wheels to becoming a better NFL tackle.

  10. FortMyersDave Says:

    I’ll only go back to Youngry if it brings us a 10-6 record like it did in 2010! Looks like the Bucs got a solid OT, good chance another will be there at the start of round 3. Could the Bucs get Clemmings there or do they go for an interior guy?

    The pick’s made. Don’t whine about what could have been. Don’t complain that this guy can’t do this and that. Crap, this site is supposed to be for Bucs Fans. There’s enough other sites that will tear us down, so we don’t need your help. Go to Jax or MIA. Just go away!

    @Get Over It-
    While I agree with your sentiment about the whiners, complainers, and knee-jerk critics, perhaps you haven’t been on JBF much. Those people make up the vast majority of the commenters on the site, by a wide margin.

    I’m not sure Johnson will be a good fit as a LT in the NFL. His movement skills aren’t great and he isn’t exactly light on his feet. I had him pegged for RT or possibly even OG in the NFL.
