Second-round pick Donovan Smith talks about his Bucs position

Offensive linemen are an interesting breed. Cattle, is what Warren Sapp used to call them, because they always hung around in a herd.

Maybe one reason for that is because there are few if any stats for college offensive linemen outside of pancakes.

But there is always a stat for student athletes, and that is grades, and new Bucs left tackle Donovan Smith is no dummy. He graduated from Penn State in 3 1/2 years, earning a degree in criminology.

It doesn’t seem as if Smith will be stealing anyone’s job. Versatile enough to play guard, Smith told the Tampa Bay pen and mic club in a conference call that the Bucs told him he would be a tackle, not a guard.

When pressed for which side, Smith dodged.

“Anywhere,” Smith said hinting he doesn’t have to be locked at tackle. “I can play either or. I can play four out of five positions [o the line]. But in my mind, I am a tackle. [The Bucs] want me to play tackle. I have heard left or right so we will see when I get there.”

The key here is that Smith is versatile. Sooner or later, an offensive lineman gets hurt in a 16-game season. Having a guy who can play every position but center helps a lot.

Sounds like a good fit. Try him and Dotson out on both sides and see what works best.

This was a 5th round pick at best. There were much better players available, even offensive lineman. His bottom line on nfl.com wqas:

Bottom Line: The frame of a guard and the skill set of a guard probably means Smith will end up moving to guard. His hands need work, but with power as his calling card and the ability to hide some of his athletic deficiencies by moving him inside, he has a good shot of getting drafted and fighting for a backup spot.

    bad pick.

    maybe we’ll take la’el collins in the 3rd …!

Lots and lots of lineman left.

  5. SteveK Says:

Protect Jameis and he will cut you to pieces.

I’m hoping for a stud to fall to round 3.

  6. Dr J Says:

Forget the defense- draft a couple more linemen and we’re solid! Keep our defense off the field!

  7. Jameis "The Train Wreck" Winston Says:

Screw it… trade up for Jake Fisher, Collins etc…

  8. Jameis "The Train Wreck" Winston Says:

    Lineman, Lineman!!!!

  9. I know why Says:

Yes he is smart, but when I watched him he didn’t play with heart. I mean the Bucs drafted oline so well last year…

Okay that’s like eight offense of players in the row we don’t play defense anymore I think we need a defensive pick

The best available o-lineman is the sagacious strategy.

Great pick, some people were expecting Clemmings or Fisher but the One Buc Braintrust obviously thought this guy is the best OT on the board who was not being investigated for pulling a Ray Caruth….. I have to admit I was a bit nervous the Bucs would trade down for some useless late round pick and miss their guy (especially after the Titans nabbed a 4th rounder to drop 7 spots) or that they’d do a stunner and do a Dexter Jackson. That had to be one of the worst draft picks in the Dominic era; rivaling the wasted #7 overall for an overrated Bama safety….. I am happy the Bucs fortified the trenches. Now time to keep at it in the third ropund; maybe Clemmings slips to them or a ready to plug in G…..

ahhh bojim, such a great reminder of why posting an opinion is pointless in a comment section on a fan page on the internet.

In my opinion it was a bad pick for the second round. My opinion. And I shared a bit of an article. Big deal, you’re a clown.

bad pick for the second round.

Why, even when the Bucs do something everyone is screaming for, there’s so much negativity? This supposed to be a site for fans to come together and discuss, not complain, whine, and generally sound like a bunch of A-holes.
