When Workouts Don’t Matter

April 10th, 2015

Joe’s good friend Gil Arcia, who writes for both Scout.com and his own website, TheBayCave.com, does yeoman’s work trying to find nuggets of Bucs info.

Now he has some on Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota, two quarterbacks the Bucs have their eyes on.

It is common belief that barring Winston doing something really stupid or a doctor digging up something on him, Winston will be your next Bucs quarterback come April 30, less than three weeks away!

However, a good tip off if the Bucs have reached their decision might be found in the coming days. Joe will let Arcia take it from here.

A decision on who they will officially draft will come well before April 30. Whether that decision will be made public is unknown — doubtful in my opinion. However, I will say this, if Winston cancels workouts in the coming weeks, then that’s how you will know that he is the pick, similar to Andrew Luck’s situation from a couple years ago with Indianapolis.

That’s an element Joe hadn’t considered. If the Bucs tell Winston he is their pick, then why risk blowing out a knee or a shoulder working out for another team, and Pearl Harboring your draft status (and losing tons of cash)? That seems reasonable.

Also in Arcia’s notes column, he suggests the Bucs took a second look of sorts at Mariota at the urging of his college coach at Oregon, Mark Helfrich, who apparently has been in the ear of his former coaching colleague, Bucs offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter.

Well, that makes sense. I wonder who else Winston was scheduled to work out with in the following few weeks?

  2. Youpeoplearesodumb Says:

“If the Bucs tell Winston he is THERE pick.”

Joe I’ll assume that was an honest mistake on your part. It’s early, bit for you posters it is unbelievable that some of you have no idea when to use there, their or they’re. Just behind that is the to, too, two dilema.

  3. Youpeoplearesodumb Says:

    but for you posters

  4. P'cola Buc Says:

As per Mike Huguenin, College Football 24/7 writer, Jameis Winston is set to meet with the Tennessee Titans this Monday….(April 13, 2015). Will this be cancelled?

  5. Luther Says:

Winston was in town yesterday supporting Mike Alstott. I wonder if he will be a topic on my ride home.

  6. P'cola Buc Says:

    @ Luther

Really? Winston seen in Tampa Bay? …At a charity event? Why bother unless The Bucs have begun the marketing campaign for their number one pick.

  7. Luther Says:

Bill Polian said the Bucs would do just that in early April if he was the pick. I sure hope so.

  8. P'cola Buc Says:

    @Luther

If he comes to town even one more time for any similar type of event that surely would tell us.

Really nice try buddy. Maybe someday you will grasp English. But that was actually the correct usage, seeing as it is possesive. Try spouting off nonsense at home for practice before you bring it to the internet 😉

  10. Pat Says:

Marcus Mariota will not visit Redskins after all….why? Scheduling I guess.

  11. HotRod Says:

Yes, it is annoying when there, their, they’re are used incorrectly. It is even more annoying when, in an attempt to look all smart and stuff, you incorrectly correct one of them. @Joe, you were right. @youpeoplearesodumb, fail.

  12. Youpeoplearesodumb Says:

    Glennongrad

Then why did Joe change it? Cause it was incorrect. Possessive is THEIR.

    What else you got moonjabo?

  13. Youpeoplearesodumb Says:

    GlenonGrad

Joe had it as there when it was posted. He later changed it to their. You may have read it after the change.

  14. JFat Says:

If you get ruffled up every time you see the wrong usage of “their” or “your” you will have a rough time reading the comments on this site.

Not a bad point by Arcia. Interesting that both Mariota and Winston have had so few visits to this point either way.

So far only the Jets, Bucs and Titans have looked at both QBs and Mariota only had 1 extra visit with the Chargers.

  15. David Says:

Wtf…really? You come on a sports site to criticize grammar dude? I don’t care what grammar they use as long as I can understand what they mean. Why are people on here so judgemental and look to always correct someone?

  16. Bucfan4life Says:

Lol, ok my head was hurting for a minute. I thought glennongrad was saying “there” was the possessive form and I laughed. I thought maybe I was the idiot when a second poster backed him up.

I would be curious to know if Joe did change it. I only read what the post said “their.”

  17. Bucfan4life Says:

    when

  18. HolyBuc Says:

I read this article last night, then this morning I read Mariota isn’t working out for Redskins and Winston is going to visit the Titans.

  19. Edgewalker Says:

    Guys.

when someone corrects grammar, they aren’t being jerks. They are being helpful.

  20. Mariota Joe Says:

Winston not working out for other teams would ONLY make sense IF he was already negotiating a contract with the Bucs……and he’s not.

  21. bucs4lyfe Says:

clever idea to give mariota fans alittle shine in a post that’s really all about Winston. all draft boards from media have had Winston being the pick since the mock drafts started to appear back in November when it was obvious quarterback was the biggest weakness, hope they follow through and pick Winston but having said that i’ll have no issue with welcoming Mariota to Tampa. atleast I know he wont hot dog it and he’ll work hard, if he has the talent they say he does then we’ll have a winning team in tampa real soon

  22. Dan Says:

Isnt marriota the one cancelling workouts?

  23. Nick Says:

    @Mariota Joe and others

There is very little to negotiate in these contracts anymore. It’s basically what the number 1 pick received last year inflated by a small percentage. This is what Clowney signed for last year:

“DE/LB Jadeveon Clowney, the number 1 overall pick of the 2014 NFL draft, signed a $22,272,998 (4-year) contract with the Houston Texans on June 6, 2014. The entire contract is fully guaranteed and contained a $14,518,544 signing bonus. Clowney’s roster bonuses are due the 5th day of training camp.”

The fact that it is fully guaranteed probably means Winston will get the same, so even less to negotiate. The reason they haven’t signed him is simply due diligence and the lack of need.

  24. Nick Says:

    @youpeoplearesodumb

“dilemma” has 2 M’s. Come correct.

  25. Pickgrin Says:

Helfrich’s connection to Koetter helps explain why Koetter was the public interview target of Scott Smith to tell about how the private workout of Mariota went. He of course gave a glowing review.

Not saying Mariota didn’t look good – but it does make sense as to why Koetter would be the one interviewed regarding Mariota’s workout but not Winston’s.

  28. rayjay1122 Says:

Why did I go to English Grammar class in school? I could have just waited and read comments on JBF to learn the English language. I mean grammar correction is so much more entertaining than educated football comments.

  29. Socalbucsfan Says:

So the grammar nazi spelt something wrong?

  30. Bucfan4life Says:

I don’t think the Bucs are going to tip their hand to either QB camp unless they are ready to announce it to the world. You can’t tell a 21 yo kid “you’re our pick but don’t tell anyone!” His friends, family, or agent will leak it. Just because it would be nearly impossible to keep it quiet I don’t think the QB himself will hear about it until everyone else does.

  31. I'm tired and 87 is right Says:

Sweet now I get Bucs info and English lessons all in one! Nobody cares on a blog board about their grammar. Take it to school, and go teach someone else. I’m an engineer not an English major. I wonder how many mistakes I made in this draft? Haha

  32. Pat Says:

    You know your ABCs….LL >>MM… 🙂

  33. Johnny Dejay Says:

I don’t think the Bucs have made their decision yet. It’s like choosing between the super-hot-freaky girl or the hot girl next door. The freaky girl may be more exciting in the short term, but the girl next door is the kind of girl you marry.

Poster’s note: I, personally, chose the super-hot-freaky girl and things ended badly, but the thrill ride was worth the heartache.

  34. Senor Mofo Says:

The problem with the workout-canceling theory is that the Titans could simply assure both Winston and Mariota that whichever one the Bucs don’t pick, the Titans will. Then, they could both start canceling workouts with other teams, and we still wouldn’t know for certain which one would be the Bucs’ pick.

Or, even if the Titans only assured one that he would be the pick if he isn’t picked by the Bucs, all we could glean is that the one that starts canceling workouts has been assured that he will be picked by one of those two teams. We still wouldn’t know for sure which team.

So, I’m bailing on the workout-canceling theory as a reliable leading indicator this year.

  35. JBuc Says:

Joe: it was my understanding that you could only do a certain amount of workouts which was different from a visit. In other words, Jameis can do a Pro Day and a workout on campus for a team but not a private workout at the team facility. Is this incorrect?

If this is the case, he could pay a visit to interview and go through some class room stuff but no risk of injury.
