Winston’s teammates open up

Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion Jameis Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon.

It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback ever to wear No. 5 in the state of Florida.

So Tuesday, when Joe was in Tallahassee amid the mob of NFL and media folks at Florida State’s pro day, with the star easily being prospective Bucs first-round pick Jameis Winston, Joe tried to get a feel for why Winston is the way he is.

Oh, the way he can fling a ball is well-documented. But despite being younger than seniors who were on the team, Winston was sort of the mother hen. Leader? Unquestionable.

Players looked up to him. That was evident during the Seminoles’ national championship season prior to playing at Clemson, when the ABC cameras caught Winston rallying his troops in the locker room. There, the entire team nodded and clapped at Winston as he stoked the fires.

Joe spoke with a couple of FSU defensive linemen about Winston. Yeah, they couldn’t hit him in practice, but they sure tried to chase him down and disrupt his throws in practice. The two players? Mario Edwards, Jr., and Eddie Goldman, both expected to be high draft choices later this month.

“A leader doesn’t have an age limit,” Edwards told Joe. [Winston] “is just one of those guys that he loves to win and he will do whatever it takes to win. That’s the type of guy or leadership that you need at the quarterback positon. He’s had that since he first stepped on the field.
“He’s very driven. Very determined.”

“He takes the pressure off of the game just by being himself,” Goldman said. “He approaches the game serious, but all in all, it is just another game and we just have to execute.”

Then the duo talked about Winston’s skills with Goldman comparing his poise in the pocket to Joe Flacco or Ben Roethlisberger.

“He is very hard to bring down, he is stable,” Goldman said. “He gets his throws in and he gets his reads quick and stands in the pocket. Even if you hit him, he can still deliver the pass. That is the name of the game. You have to take that shot and deliver the ball. That’s why Joe Flacco gets paid and Ben Roethlisberger gets paid. [Winston] can improvise like Roethlisberger as well. I mean, he can do everything.”

Edwards thinks Winston is one of those guys who is sneaky athletic.

“Honestly, Jameis is such a huge quarterback,” Edwards said. “He is huge and most people would look at his 40 (time) and say he isn’t fast. But field speed, football speed, he’s agile enough to make you miss and he is fast enough to outrun you if you take a bad angle. So really, his versatility to sit in the pocket and extend plays makes him very hard [to bring down].”

don’t know how much of that was true and how much that was teammates talking up their quarterback but what I do know for certain is no one could ever say “sneaky athletic” about glennon, draft this man and get him a playbook. all 32 teams are taking a chance that their first round pick is the right pick for their team, im sure even patriots want that first pick to be a homerun. yea you never know but sure seems like Winston is a homerun

  2. Stanglassman Says:

This is all true and very apparent to the people who have been following this guy for the last few years or have done their home work. Not so much to the people who made up their mind to dislike the guy no matter the fact or just want to draft MM.

  3. robert 9 Says:

    glennon is faster

  4. BrianDorry55 Says:

It’s absurd how much has been made of his slow 40 time…Turn on the damn tape, he’s made a couple of mind-boggling plays with his feet at FSU. I still think that run against Oklahoma State was as good as anything Mariota did with his feet at Oregon.

  5. bucs4lyfe Says:

lots of bitter fans out there but tell you what all this stuff he did in college doesn’t really matter, your not going to be stealing crab legs when your a millionaire, if tom brady stood up on a table and yelled out anything so what who would care. it’s about getting down to the business of winning and learning to be an nfl quarterback which I think he will do. I think by the time rookie mini camp and OTA’s are over with bucs will decide to make him a day one starter if he is as smart as they say he is why wait

  6. jimmy53 Says:

In all fairness, as a Nole fan, their defensive line couldn’t bring anyone down last year.

  7. robert 9 Says:

“your not going to be stealing crab legs when your a millionaire, if tom brady stood up on a table and yelled out anything so what who would care.”

so, now your admitting he stole them. check

Tom Brady has too much class to even think about saying what he said, much less jumping on a table and doing it. class, common sense, whatever you call it.

  8. you can't fix it Says:

Robert 9 — I would not trust winston if I was the buc’s , He is going to be a bust for any team that signs him, They need to draft maritoa or trade down if they can make a great deal with another team…….

  9. bucs4lyfe Says:

    @robert 9

I would insult your intelligence but you wouldn’t even catch on to it. the bottom line is what happened in college has nothing to do with what he will be in the NFL, it’s not the same thing slo mo

lol so now you know tom brady and Winston? lol you really simple minded. you’ve only seen tom brady on tv and you think you know the guy, how do you get through life with this mental handicap

  10. RustyRhinos Says:

My only hope is that Mr. Winston is able to be as great as his over blown greatness, we as buc fans know just how difficult it is going to be with the offensive line we now have. No matter who keeps bloating Mr. Winstons greatness if we draft him he will need to get adjusted to the speed of the NFL. I hope he is everything that Joe and 87 and most of the other Winston promoters claim he will be. Because if he is not all that what will happen to him. He lost his first game in college and nearly lost his composure on national TV. How can we project his reactions to losses in the NFL. There will be losses.

I can not believe the folks on this blog who continue to say his lack of foot speed will not be a problem in the NFL. Mr. Roethlisberger and Mr. Flaco get compared with Mr Winston in that foot speed discusion. What I never hear in those comments is the talented Offensive line these QB’s play behind. Yeah I know “great” QB’s make average offensive lines play better. I hope Mr. Winston is up to those lofty claims with our current situation at offensive line.
    Go Bucs!

  11. Eric Says:

I read somewhere that the bucs talked to 75 player coaches and associates of Winston.

Probably why they are giddy about him because they have balanced info from people who know him.

  12. Dreambig Says:

Jimm53 – that is very true. FSUs defense was terrible. Their Oline wasn’t much better. With the exception of one or two games from Dalvin Cook that skewed the stats a bit, the running game really struggled. That’s why I think Winston will be still be productive even if our Oline doesn’t give him all day. Despite some of the haters rhetoric, FSUs hyped up Oline underperformed last year and he rarely had all day to throw. Having said that, no QB will play good if the Oline completely sucks.

  13. P'cola Buc Says:

    @Eric

Wow…75 people interviewed on Winston….that is a lot. Feeling better about the Winston pick……75 people who actually know him….Go Winston!

  14. rayjay1122 Says:

I was back and forth on Winston vs Mariota for a while but as I have become more informed and more familiar with Winston’s leadership traits in spite of making some poor off the field decisions which I fully believe he will leave in his past, I am all in on Winston. He really does have the ‘it factor’ and can be a great QB especially when the game is on the line. The NFL games usually come down to the wire and the team that can drive down the field at the end and steal a game usually are the playoff teams. Not typically many blow outs. I just do not see Mariota being well adjusted to being clutch in crunch time. When the Ducks were down by a few scores, he did not seem like he had a commanding presence to bring his team back to victory. Winston did exactly that many times. I am the furthest thing from a Winston jock sniffer but I am a solid Bucs fan and want my team to be contenders again. Winston will be a huge cog in the creation of the winning machine that is being built. We will address the OL and DE positions and since Rome was not built in one day, we will have to put together the other pieces next season. Some of you Winston haters are going to be eating crow. It is time to get over the Winston character slamming. He was not charged and has a clean slate with the NFL. He will make the Bucs relevant again and if you are a Bucs fan, that has to excite you unless of course you are so negative and blah that Rachel Watson could walk by you at the Beach in a thong and not get a rise out of you!!!

we’re not talking football skills. we’re talking character and integrity. without that there’s a VERY good chance mr goodell will have his way with winston, not if, but when he messes up, and he won’t be on the field anyway.

nah I get your Robert and basically your just saying your consistent and that if this was one of your friends that stood up on a freakin table and shouted something out or got caught taking crabs legs your treat him like trash because you don’t make mistakes. if he was accused of rape with no evidence and was never convicted you would disown your friend because your a stand up guy and you live with the highest of integrity lol I get what your sayin

love these guys that sit on their computers and judge other people based on what they read….you my friend your lifeless and you need to get a life before it’s gone

Best part is people like him can and I hope, do, continue to repeat the same manta over and over everyday, and it’s going to change zero. I hope he exhausts himself and types rape in every single thing he posts. I hope his anger for Winston runs through his brain all day every day. And, it’s not going to affect who Tampa drafts. He’s just spinning his own wheels.

Winston will be a Buc, and he and those like him can cry and boast about morality til they are blue in the face. I laugh. Then I laugh some more.

I womanized. never publicly degraded them though.

hell, I was a crazy mofo and am not sitting on some high horse…..but the things he has done are not simple errors in judgement. their character. and it’s just gonna get worse.

  29. 87LikesFreeJerseys Says:

He’s going to be a Buc, so anything the haters say at this point is…. well pointless.

Let robert 9 go to Miiami and root for Freeman. 🙂

Winston played two sports!!! How does that not equal athletic?? Speed does not equal an athlete. Playing and EXCELLING at multiple sports make you an athlete.

your kidding right? are you a Raiders fan or something that you think the 40 time you get to train for is some big deal? lol did you actually see glennon running the 40 it was hilarious.

to show you how much 40 time means in a game: mike glennon and josh freeman both ran a 4.9 in the 40 so you want to tell me why freeman rushed for some many yards including the year he ran for 394 yards while glennon when glennon takes off to run it looks like it hurts

  32. Eric Says:

I believe the word athletic in this context meant he is a leader in athletics vis a vis his team mates.

    Vs. His personal life.

Thats the way I read it anyway.

In any event a guy who wins the Heisman and started on one of the better NCAA baseball teams is an athlete. Even with slow 40.

  33. Dave Pear Says:

    Robert 9,
Remember when on February, 20, 2015 you told everybody that a college QB raped you?
    Tell us more about that.
How were you put into a situation where you got raped?
And if any of that is actually true, I think that QB might have screwed your brains out.

  34. BoltIsle Says:

You should keep saying this. Over and over. Rise up Robert!! You are going to make a difference….Get righteous!! Get outraged!! Call your city councilman!! Call your senator.

But, at the end of day, Jameis will be a Buc. Yet, you still have hundred of posts to make you show your disapproval before that happens. Snap to it! Moral outrage isn’t going to write itself!! I request for Erica Kinsman material. Talk more about that!!

  37. Dave Pear Says:

    You weren’t being sarcastic.
You stated that you were raped by a college QB.
    No sarcasm.
Were you being sarcastic when you said you are married to a lawyer?
Are you being sarcastic when you say you are “buff?”
    I get sarcasm.
I just think you are “Coo-Coo for Cocoa Puffs.”

  38. bucs4lyfe Says:

I actually really feel sorry for people like Robert 9. you really really hate Winston or you want to hate him so bad but you have no valid proof about why you should hate him so you just throw bounce nonsense off the wall hoping something sticks. lol your kinda in the same situation as the rape accuser, she cant prove her allegations either, if she did and there was more proof than umm I accused him of rape he has to be guilty then I may look at him differently as a person but as a player he’s the best qb in the draft. no one talks about mike glennon’s skills this way or even josh freeman, this guy is polarizing and intriguing and soon a buc. get used to it

I don’t think it’s enough to root for another team, you may have to get football out of your life all together, what are you going to do if you see Winston on highlights doing what he did in college because it’s just as much of a possibility as being a bust. no matter what team you leave us to go root for you’ll be seeing Winston…..you’ll have to leave and go to some country that doesn’t have football which limits your options alittle bit

Tom Brady has too much class to even think about saying what he said, much less jumping on a table and doing it. class, common sense, whatever you call it.

    =======================

Here’s an account of your “classy” Tom Brady after throwing a touchdown:

“OK … it’s more like “Hell yeah motherf—er!. I knew it! I knew you could to it!” Gronkowski admitted, per Will Brinson of CBSSports.com. “You’re gonna get some b—hes after the game now!

BTW – Quoting Warren Buffet on integrity is about on par with referring to Charles Manson on ethics.

  41. rayjay1122 Says:

Too much is being put in Winston’s 40 time. I would prefer him throw a 40 yard pass for a TD to Evans, V-JAX or ASJ AKA Goliath than run for a 40 yard TD. Besides, the 40 time does not take into account elusiveness. A gator can outrun a horse for a short straight distance but they can not change direction so fast. Regardless if Glennon is even slightly faster than Winston, Glennon is not elusive. I like Glennon as a person and think he is a quality back up, so this is not me hating on Glennon but merely pointing out the 40 times being blown way out of proportion. We won a Super Bowl with Brad Johnson. Does anyone think he was a track star?

  42. 87LikesFreeJerseys Says:

  44. Pickgrin Says:

Winston is plenty athletic for a pocket QB. 40 time means nothing. Watch the tape. Winston can run well when need be or when given opportunity. More importantly – he moves well in and around the pocket. He senses pressure with eyes still downfield and moves to an open space to buy time. Was Favre “athletic? How about Roethlisberger? These are the 2 players Winston reminds me of in that regard.

  45. Pickgrin Says:

When are you guys gonna learn to ignore the troll?

  48. Erik the WiseMMan Says:

Here’s the main reason I don’t understand why people want Winston over Mariota: our offense will be easier to defend (schematically) with Winston at the helm than it would be with Mariota. It’s well-known that a QB who is highly-mobile and can throw great as well is a nightmare for a defense. This is the also the main reason I think Lovie will end up drafting Mariota when it’s all said and done. I truly believe this Winston stuff is all just due process and showmanship.

  49. 87SizeXLCreamsicle! Says:

Erik…one reason is Lovie’s on the hot seat right now. Time is NOT on his side. Sure he can wait and wait and wait some more until Mariota is ready. Then he gets fired….
