Jameis Watch: Divine Intervention

February 23rd, 2015

jameis 1104Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion Jameis Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.

It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback ever to wear No. 5 in the state of Florida.

The fans want him. Joe knows employees of the Bucs that want him. Joe knows many former Bucs want him. But will the Bucs pull that correct lever come April 30?

Yes, the Bucs need Jameis Winston.

The former star quarterback at Florida State is the guy for this moribund Tampa Bay franchise: a top-flight signalcaller with a personality that fills the locker room and lights up the TV cameras. Hell, Winston himself wants to come to the Bucs. Noticed how he dropped Vincent Jackson’s name when he broke down a red zone play for Steve Mariucci?

It seems like the path is being paved for Winston to come to Tampa Bay. That was some of the scuttlebutt Joe heard last week at the NFL Scouting Combine. Some even believe Lovie Smith and general manager Jason Licht have started a public relations campaign to defend the pick against the haters and those that can’t keep their socks on tight.

It seems Luke Easterling of the Bleacher Report has stumbled across another sign. Easterling learned Winston is joining with a cleric to aid his cause.

This is all starting to smell like a well-crafted, well-organized campaign to quell the folks hollering about choosing Winston.

Just the thought of the Bucs selecting Winston is enough to make one dance.

No benefit from smokscreens. Just draft the player of your choice!!

I perfer a q.b that doesn’t need a spiritual advisor because he has better than average decision making abilites. Who is this advisor and where was he when we had Blount/Talib and Tjax? If we draft him, he needs to live with #55.

“those that can’t keep their socks on tight”

WTH does this phrase mean? Ive never heard it before, but it made me lol.

    Children?

  4. 1bucfanjeff Says:

If the Bucs like both QB’s and are found to be equally impressive, then trade spots with the Titans, pick up a draft pick or 2 and take whichever QB is available. That won’t happen, but it’s a thought.

  5. Couch Fan Says:

Should start looking for his house to in the Bay. Get it all squared away now. Once we draft him he’ll have nothing left to distract him from jumping right into the playbook and get ready for the season. Can’t wait!! #FireTheCannons4Jameis

  6. 1bucfanjeff Says:

I prefer MM, but have no complaints for JW – as a QB – either.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

“The fans want him. Joe knows employees of the Bucs that want him.”

Based on what Joe…..your poll?……which fans….JBF posters?……as far as I know a scientific poll of Buc fans hasn’t been conducted.

Such a poll would be easy to conduct…..perhaps starting with season ticket holders and then fans at large….the Bucs have broad mailing lists and the resources to conduct the poll.

I agree that there will be a massive PR plan to sell Jameis if he is the pick and it will begin the minute the decision is made.

If there is no poll, it may be because they already know they don’t need one and the pick will be Mariota. Mariota polls 2-1 in all opiinion polls nationwide….but those polls, like Joe’s are not scientific polls.

I would be curious as to the male/female breakdown of Joe’s poll……oh, that’s right….Joe has no idea….my point exactly!!!

  8. Bucs_ Says:

I was a naysayer, I gotta admit now I really like Winston. I thought Joe was out of his mind with all these Winston articles..

Bucs fans ought to be happy with the smartest QB since Peyton Manning.

What more can you ask for?

not a safe pick, but hey it’s not our money.

I have a VERY high risk tolerance, but some things just are not worth the risk.

with L & L’s past history of making great decisions it would not surprise me if they draft him. high pick next year and new coach if they do.

This is all starting to smell like a well-crafted, well-organized campaign to quell the folks hollering about choosing Winston.

One day, a scorpion looked around at the mountain where he lived and decided that he wanted a change. So he set out on a journey through the forests and hills. He climbed over rocks and under vines and kept going until he reached a river.
The river was wide and swift, and the scorpion stopped to reconsider the situation. He couldn’t see any way across. So he ran upriver and then checked downriver, all the while thinking that he might have to turn back.

Suddenly, he saw a frog sitting in the rushes by the bank of the stream on the other side of the river. He decided to ask the frog for help getting across the stream.

“Hellooo Mr. Frog!” called the scorpion across the water, “Would you be so kind as to give me a ride on your back across the river?”

“Well now, Mr. Scorpion! How do I know that if I try to help you, you wont try to kill me?” asked the frog hesitantly.

“Because,” the scorpion replied, “If I try to kill you, then I would die too, for you see I cannot swim!”

Now this seemed to make sense to the frog. But he asked. “What about when I get close to the bank? You could still try to kill me and get back to the shore!”

“This is true,” agreed the scorpion, “But then I wouldn’t be able to get to the other side of the river!”

“Alright then…how do I know you wont just wait till we get to the other side and THEN kill me?” said the frog.

“Ahh…,” crooned the scorpion, “Because you see, once you’ve taken me to the other side of this river, I will be so grateful for your help, that it would hardly be fair to reward you with death, now would it?!”

So the frog agreed to take the scorpion across the river. He swam over to the bank and settled himself near the mud to pick up his passenger. The scorpion crawled onto the frog’s back, his sharp claws prickling into the frog’s soft hide, and the frog slid into the river. The muddy water swirled around them, but the frog stayed near the surface so the scorpion would not drown. He kicked strongly through the first half of the stream, his flippers paddling wildly against the current.

Halfway across the river, the frog suddenly felt a sharp sting in his back and, out of the corner of his eye, saw the scorpion remove his stinger from the frog’s back. A deadening numbness began to creep into his limbs.

“You fool!” croaked the frog, “Now we shall both die! Why on earth did you do that?”

The scorpion shrugged, and did a little jig on the drownings frog’s back.

“I could not help myself. It is my nature.”

Then they both sank into the muddy waters of the swiftly flowing river.

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If the pick is Winston….we will likely know the second it is made….and we will be pounded with PR from the Bucs….not just JBF. The Bucs will have some work to do to start repairing Winston’s public image.

If the pick is Mariota….we may not know until the announcement (I don’t think they even cut away to the phone call anymore)

It is far too early for a final decision to be made….

  15. Nick Says:

    @tampabaybucfan

The “scientific poll” you keep referring to is useless in this regard. When talking about national political polls you need a non-skewed sample because its a reflection of the input the voters will eventually have on the decision. For the Bucs purposes, a scientific or non-scientific poll doesn’t help you determine the answer. The only poll that will is a 2 person poll completed by Lovie and Licht. And you’re not getting that.

Again, Joe’s poll is probably as is good as your going to get for the “well-educated Buc’s fan” population. There’s a reason these national polls you keep citing favor Mariota, its because a lot of these markets already have their QB. Ask a Patriot or Colts fan who they want between Winston and Mariota, they’d tell you “who cares, I guess we’ll take the one with the least headaches”.

And seriously.. stop citing national non-scientific polls as a reason to debunk a local non-scientific poll.

  16. Eric Says:

Seems like I’ve heard somewhere in the Christian doctrine things like redemption and forgiveness. Fresh start, new beginnings.

Maybe the Pastor is not being hoodwinked into a PR stunt but is legitimately counseling Mr. Winston?

Maybe Jameis recognizes some of his issues and is turning to faith to address them and become a better person?

I think I’ve heard in the doctrine something about people who live in glass houses should not throw stones, and everyone falls short….some say that is the essence of that faith.

Nah, gotta be a PR stunt.

  20. Couch Fan Says:

Lets be fair. There will NEVER be any poll that is unbias. The media has influenced the nation way to much to ever have a fair poll taken anywhere. You would have to ask specific questions like “Have you watched tape on both QBs or are you only going by what you heard?” and then you would have haters like certain people on here who would mark the worst thing possible against jameis. I’m actually surprised there are any polls that show Winston in the lead.

  21. Tom S. Says:

I’ve noticed the people who have the biggest problems with Winston are the ones that know the least about him or the situations he’s accused of beyond an ESPN headline or slam piece from an editorial written to drive interest to the site. As some people are saying, the more they actually LEARN about the guy the better they feel about him. The majority of the things he was accused of were petty. The one big accusation has never been proven in 3 attempts and the accuser is presently going for a paycheck from FSU for her troubles while previously failing to settle with Winston financially. Read into that what you will.

    ———————————

Hey couch, I know a poll where Winston is in the lead and that is amongst drafts experts, former/current NFL scouts and former/current NFL players. I am not surprised by that in the least. He is clearly the best qb to the majority of those in the know.

  25. Tiny Tim Says:

Lets throw in Warren Sapp, Michael Irvin, Ray Lewis and Prime Time’s swagger. What do they have in common besides race, superbowls and attended college in the state of Florida? They are all first ballot HOF. Let me know when swagger is a bad thing. Better yet, tell me a great player in any sport that does not have an ego. Michael Jordan any one.

  26. OneBuC55 Says:

    Love’em or Hate’em this kid has Swagger…

Not saying the NFL will be easy for him in the beginning but Winston has all the tools necessary to hit the ground running…I honestly believe Tampa is the best landing spot for him too because of the coaching staff and veteran players in place…If this franchise wants to become a playoff regular and win super bowls we’re gonna need the right signal caller…I believe Winston is that guy….

  27. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Nick

The poll I’m talking about doesn’t exist yet and we will probably never know the results….it will be an internal poll of Buc fans….conducted by an independent pollster for the Bucs…..they will use the results….not to make their choice…but to be prepared for what sort of marketing/pr may be necessary with the pick.
All companies do this for new products….products in development or even existing products….and yes…..a NFL QB especially a 1st round pick qualifies as a product.

All the non-scientific opinion polls in the world can’t take the place of a properly conducted scientific opinion poll…..anyone with a marketing research background would agree with this.

  28. Robert 9 Says:

    pittman-meh, not a lot

none of those guys are 1/4 as cocky as the college player who has never played an NFL snap. a little concerning. just something to add to the list. just my opinion.

  29. Johnny Dejay Says:

Do you know who else had swagger? Vince Young, Brady Quinn, Robert Griffin III, Jake Locker, Sam Bradford, Jamarcus Russell, Matt Leinart, Mark Sanchez, Byron Leftwich, Joey Harrington, David Carr, Tim Couch, Ryan Leaf, Heath Shuler, and Joe’s manboycrush Johnny Manzeil. All of those players were enormous failures in the NFL. Swagger alone means nothing.

High character men are the ones who succeed at QB in the NFL. Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Aaron Rogers, Russell Wilson, Phillip Rivers, Eli Manning, Matt Stafford, Matt Ryan, and Carson Palmer are all current examples. We never hear about character issues with those men.

I realize that everyone makes immature mistakes, myself included. However, there is a clear cut difference between the character of Winston and Mariota that is much larger than the difference on the football field or at the combine. Mariota is a high character leader and Winston is a thug. It’s as simple as that.

Mark me down as preferring Mariota.

  30. Greg Schiano Says:

This Tampa Bay Buc’s fan does NOT want the Rapist Winston! Joe can buy my season tickets as I will never take my daughters to watch him play! No way he lasts no matter what lies he tells about seeking spiritual forgiveness and or mentoring!

Show us the video tape and then I will vote for Winston….oh thats right..he destroyed the one piece of evidence that would difinitively prove his story (lie) about whether the act was consensual! I cannot fathom why anyone would destroy video evidence that would prove their innoncence…..why???

Hey Joe? Have you asked that Tampa girl who was raped by Winston if she wants the Buc’s to pick him?? How about interviewing her?

Rich Eisen runs the 40 yard dash faster than Winston!! Greg Hardy was accused of domestic violence and has spent 1 full season (and counting) out of football! Ray Rice was never charged (although guilty) of domestic violence and he has spent 1 full season (and counting)! Adrian Peterson whipped his boy with a switch, albeit not my way, but I know I was whupped a lot harder in the day. He has been out of football for 1 season (and counting)! Kurt Busch (NASCAR Champion) has some girl accuse him of domestic violence more than two (65 days) months after the incident of alleged domestic violence and he is losing millions….Not condoning domestic violence in any form, but to be accused 65 days after the fact and not charged is not fair grounds to end a career.

Now Joe’s boy Winston has raped a girl (his word against hers like with Busch), yelled vulgarities about women in public, and committed theft and he is shielded by FSU, TPD, and the media. In the NFL and/or NASCAR, Winston would be suspended. No way the Buc’s need to waste a #1 pickon someone who has failed to apologize, struts around like he is untouchable, and will reoffend in the near future. I cannot believe Lovie is proclaiming him the pick without even interviewing him.

Is Lovie going to interview the girl? Is he going to ask Winston for the video tape that would clear him?

The Buc’s need a QB, but they need to also get a player who will play for the next 10 years. No chances should be taken on someone who could be on the NFL Exempt list his first season!

  39. Nick Says:

    @Tampabaybucfan

What?!? Companies use scientific opinion polls to conduct market research?!? Tell me more..

Of course. However, there is no need to split hairs here. Whether the fan’s perspective is 60/40 on Mariota or 60/40 Winston, come April 30th one of us is going to be 100% right and one will be 100%wrong.

The issue I have is that the very bias you claim Joe of having for Winston is the same bias you have for Mariota that somehow filters from your computer all the dozens if not hundreds of experts claiming that Winston is the preferable QB. I have no clue if you only visit web sites hosted in the state of Oregon, but the legitimate media I read and watch its closer to 75/25 Winston. Joe is not making these people up. The fact you disagree with all of them doesn’t change the fact they exist and know more than you. It’s perfectly fine to like Mariota and tout his attributes, but whether or not you get your scientific poll, it doesn’t change the fact that among the people that get paid for their opinion, Winston is the majority choice.

  40. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Nick

I am a Mariota supporter that would very well be happy with Winston as QB….I have never accused him…and have called out others who do.
Yes, I am biased…but I’m not running the sight…..I choose to point out that Joe’s bias influences many….and it is, at times very comical.
My concerns with Winston are the same concerns the Bucs have….”the unknown”….when they make their decision…I’ll be happy with it as long as its a QB.

As far as the polls….my observations are from a professional background perspective……no, the Bucs will not rely on polls for their decision…..
But, I can guarantee you that those responsible for PR etc…are aware of all of them and are making preparations to deal with the results.

  41. Tiny Tim Says:

    @ robert 9

Way to dodge the question. No one is hating on you because you have an opinion about swagger. Far from it. Stop trying to hide behind the hate argument because we are tearing up your notion that a kid having swagger is detrimental to an organization. I guess you feel so strongly about swagger that you would have a problem with Brady on your team as well. And you are well within your right. I would just simply suggest you take the stick out of your butt though. It makes going through life a little easier without it up there.

  42. White Tiger Says:

Kid Fameis mentioned Vincent Jackson because he wants the money that comes with being the #1 overall pick. He should have done his part back in college…when he decided to stand on a table in the student union and yell obscenities at underage coeds who had the misfortune of accidentally walking in front of him.

Kid Fameis wants to be the #1 overall pick, but he didn’t want to adhere his coaches playcalling – who mockingly “asked” his star QB to let him call the plays” and eventually he had to be threatened with benching his star QB…in the biggest (and last) game of his college career.

Additionally, despite his desire to be the #1 overall selection of the 2015 NFL draft, this unbelievable young man with the vaunted “über-football IQ”…somehow threw it to the other team more often than any other starting QB for a major college…

See, on so many levels, on and off the field, Kid Fameis just doesn’t measure up to the absolute HONOR of being selected with #1 overall draft pick…it’s like rewarding the guy who TELLS you he’s the best, rather than rewarding the guy who quietly went out and BEAT the guy who told you he’s the best…

I’m sure the “underage” coeds were forever tarnished, and never made it to the sockhop in their poodle skirts. Oh, the humanity!!!

  45. White Tiger Says:

Oh yeah, I forgot to add the part where this really nice young man yelled obscenities at those underage coeds…a couple of weeks after being cleared of RAPE charges…and about a week after he said he’d never, ever, ever, be connected with ANYTHING like sexual assault.

For some folks, mostly those with daughters, that’s kind of a big deal. I’m sure not to the guys at the student union had a problem with it…as one of them was up their with that wonderful leader of men…yelling obscenities at those young women (whom I’m sure probably enjoy it, more to the point, probably WANTED Kid Fameis to yell obscenities at them…).

Yeah, I stand corrected. This is the type of humanity and dazzling personality that demands to be rewarded.

  46. Jack Says:

    Folks, let’s be real:

    1. There are and have been several pros that have had problems with maturity and needed guidance – if everything turns out right and there is nothing found in his background investigation, then it is a maturity problem. It will have to be managed. And, it looks like the BUCS are preparing for this situation.

    2. Winston is a talented QB. Period.

    3. TB could use him at QB whether as the instant starter or to provide high level competition for the job. Period.

  47. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

What’s underage? Under 18? Or 21? Does that mean the ones OF age were not offended? It’s funny how people included qualifiers to make it sound extra bad, that really have nothing to with the situation. “Underage” LOL.

I wish I could see the look on some people’s faces when they draft Winston.

  49. Phil Says:

I still don’t understand why the Bucs haven’t signed Jameis to a contract. Because we have the number one pick we don’t have to wait until 04/30/15 to sign him. Houston signed Mario Williams before the NFL draft. He comes to Tampa to sign his contact and when he is here Dirk can hand him a playbook so he can take it home with him to study it. And inside that playbook Dirk has written down the phone number of Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans so Jameis can call them so they can get together and work on learning the playbook. The Bucs should have already done their due diligence on Winston a long time ago. They should already know who their pick is going to be. We all know who the pick is going to be so they are just wasting valuable time at this point to get Winston ready.

That’s a great sign considering Dungy’s praise of Mariota.

A breath of fresh air Nick!
