“We Kind Of Got Our Coach Fired”

January 9th, 2015

Roddy White talked about the last hours of the Falcons’ 2014 offense under Dirk Koetter

New Bucs offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter sure left the Falcons with a sour taste in his mouth.

His last game was an epic nightmare.

The Falcons came home in Week 17 to face the Panthers. The winner would win the NFC South and go the playoffs, but Koetter’s Atlanta offense imploded and the team lost 34-3.

Joe listed to Roddy White on Atlanta sports radio talk about the end of the Mike Smith-Dirk Koetter era in Atlanta this week.

White hung the offensive choke job on the players not Koetter.

“I feel like we prepared well. We were ready to play the game. “We played so bad on offense. I think offensively, you know, we kind of got our coach fired,” White said. “That’s what I think. That’s just my personal opinion.

“We just sat there and turned over the ball and put our defense in bad situations. I mean, two pick-sixes, and things like that. We knew we took ourselves out of the game offensively. That was kind of our day. We didn’t have anything going. We didn’t do anything right. No facets of offense played well that day.”

What a way for Koetter to leave town. Joe hopes Koetter is angry and fired up to grab the wheel from Lovie Smith and right the lost Bucs ship.

Kudos to Roddy White for his honesty!

  2. Soggy Says:

It’s good for us that it happened that way, They win that game and we probably do not get him.. Not yesterday for sure..

  3. Robert 9 Says:

    I love this hire myself.

yeah, I can be positive 🙂

  4. Robert 9 Says:

just glad we landed him quick…a lot of open spots out there. nice job L & L.

and with a 2-14 record he could look like a super hero if he just does an adequate job of using our players.

the O-C last year was just soo bad, and the QB play. It was a horrible season, but hard to believe it was not a total tank job the whole season playing mcclown. kind of like paying him 5 mill not to get MG killed.

Two birds with one stone….OC for 2 years then Lovies replacement

  6. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Imagine if Koetter had been hired instead of Tedford. He wasn’t available I get that, just imagining.

We’d probably have been in the playoffs instead of Carolina and even though I’m not a card carrying member of the MGM I gotta believe Koetter could have used Glennon properly and gotten us at least 8 and maybe nine wins. We choked away at least 4 last year with incompetence behind the bench in the totally over matched Marcus Arroyo.

  7. The buc pessimist formerly DB55 Says:

Thank you joe I appreciate that.

  8. Soggy Says:

@StPeteBucsFan, Thats food for thought, wonder if that even could happen this year? Wow would that stir up some people going with glennon this year..UM..

  9. The buc pessimist formerly DB55 Says:

    Stpete

Imagine if we hired Norv turner. He put up 7 wins with a rookie qb in a tough division that has 2 teams in the playoffs. Norv was available when we hired tedford. Oh the possibilities.

  10. Tom T Says:

Who decides on the new QB coach? Lovie or Koetter?

  11. The buc pessimist formerly DB55 Says:

    @OAR

You see brother you were right.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Tom T

Most likely Koetter with Lovie’s approval…..same with all the other assistants on the offensive side of the ball…..look for some changes…

  13. Zam Says:

Koetter would have drafted a QB and they’d have traded MG. I’m convinced that Lovie only kept MG because Tedford told him he could turn him into a great QB, hence the “quarterback of the future” moniker that started around March and ended around October.

Will be really interesting to see whether it’s McCown or Glennon on the roster next year. It won’t be both.

  14. Barry Says:

Hey Dirk, What’s this I hear about you wanting to run a high powered offense? -Lovie Smith

  15. Tom Edrington Says:

Reading those Roddy White quotes, it was as if they came from just about any player on the 2014 Buccaneer offense!

    Simple as that…..

  16. Robert 9 Says:

    @ zam

we saw enough of mccown to say he should not be on the roster.

for 500k, much less 5 mill. so, I guess that answers that as to which one stays. IMO anyway.

  17. Fuzzy Red Coin Purse Says:

I think this is the perfect spot for Koetter with our Wr’s and 1st draft picks in every round with plenty of picks to move around to grab the guys that fit our team. I can’t wait to see this new ship sail out into the Gulf and blast the NFCS away next season. We can do it, hell didn’t seem like any team wanted the division this past season, so why not us. Plus, now we have the Falcons best coach, which leaves them in a total rebuild as far as systems go.

  18. Erik with Clean Athletics Says:

My predictions: We win the division next year, Mariota wins ROY, and Lovie is a finalist for COY. SERIOUSLY. (even Raheem got 2nd place in COY voting his 2nd season)

  19. OAR Says:

I was wrong once, but I was mistaken. Seriously, once in a blue moon, I can make a good call…..actually depends on the angle you shake the magic eight ball!

  20. The buc pessimist formerly DB55 Says:

    OAR

I was being sarcastic. Apparently the offense did cause them to get fired at least according to white. I think that’s what I said in the previous article that you disagreed with me on. All good though bro.

  21. OAR Says:

    DB55
Play calling and execution are two different things! Turnovers and bad decisions sound like he meant it was on the players, but whatever, I’m not a dirty bird fan so no big deal to me.

  22. OB Says:

I wonder when the house cleaning will start, do you know Joe?

  23. Robert 9 Says:

    ROY and COY predictions already.

    lol

I’m not even going to re-up my dish subscription until they are competitive. i.e. win more than lose.

    Stupid comment.

So you’re implying that Lovie will do so bad for the next 2 years that they will fire him and make Koetter the HC? What are you basing this on?

Man, it seems like this site is just filled with stupid today.

Why even waste brain power on something that not only happened in the past, but something that wasn’t even available.

“What if we would’ve drafted Tom Brady in the 7th round?”
“What if we would’ve signed Payton Manning in the offseason?”
“What if Andrew Luck was our starting TE this year?”

    @ Robert 9
But that’s what makes those predictions so bold…. As of right now, we were last in the division, Mariota isn’t even on our team yet, & Lovie was possibly the worst coach in the entire league ths season.

Joe do us a favor so we can get the dumb asses off the the site or at least off the comments ask anyone of these A**Holes from a pure football stand point why would you draft MM over JW to be the Bucs QB of the Future and see how they respond!

Eric!!! Take a chill pill man. You have some anger management issues. You call people who hold a different opinion than yours a**holes? Really? Opinion about two college QB’s who odds say have about a 1 and 7 chance of actually making it in the NFL? And this inspires you to call people aholes?

Then I hit this from Celly about how stupid we all are in here today. Thank God we have Celly to tell us all how to conduct OUR business.

“Why even waste brain power on something that not only happened in the past, but something that wasn’t even available.”

Celly perhaps you can borrow some of Eric’s chill pills when he gets them.
Talk about STOOOPID!!! That’s what freaking sports fans do…waste their time at games, watching TV, and then debating. If it doesn’t entertain you then move on,

Now Mr Genius tell me one person besides Joe who is earning a living from this site…WHO amongst us here is NOT wasting their time. That’s what fun is supposed to be…wasting your time!!!

There are some really unhappy campers out there eh. Not me!!!:-)

with matt ryan at QB? I don’t think anyone the bucs draft are as good as matty ice. koetter might be a dud. no wonder they let the guy go. so glum over his leaving Atlanta….but when not being in front of the cameras they are glad he left town.
    34-3 some offense….

  33. tmaxcon Says:

port richey george = so you are going to judge a coach on one game when he has coached 20 odd years… that’s a accurate sampling for sure. 1 game that Matty Ice through 2 pick six. I doubt Koetter drew it up that way. I like the Koetter hire but the jury will be out the way Lovie destroys OC’s only time will tell but judging him on one game is ridiculous. I believe that offense that lost 34 – 3 still finished in the top ten for the year. That’s a little better than Lovie’s second to last place effort.

There’s an article on NFL.com about the hire, you should read the comments. They support everything you’re saying.

  36. StPeteBucsFan Says:

If you guys are going to judge Koetter on ONE game after a 20 year career then I’m with Tmax. That’s….well let’s put it this way.

As Tmax pointed out Matty “Ice” melted down and tossed 2 pick sixes.

Given your logic Matty Ice sucks and we certainly wouldn’t want him on our team. Really?

  39. Brandon Says:

White’s being nice and not calling out the real problem, the defense. It wasn’t the offense that was one of the worst in the league, it was the D. It was the O that kept that horrible D in games. Yeah, members of the team got Koetter/Smith fired, mostly it was defensive members and certainly nothing Koetter did.

It’s funny, everything you write is negative. Who the hell do you think they should have hired? Your answer should be worth a laugh, if you choose to answer. You must get very little enjoyment in your life to be such a constantly negative person.

    Worst to first? Any takers?

  42. Soggy Says:

Like last year I was optimistic until the first few games, I did not like some of lovies first moves back then right after the hire [no hester, Crown the McCown] but still I was optimistic until proven otherwise, Now this year we seem to be off on a better foot, lovie sat out some starters in the second half of the last game for the number one pick and now a good OC that most everybody likes regardless of a few bloggers that is going to happen no matter what or where you go, So what I am saying is we are off to a good start this year and I am going to stay optimistic until proven otherwise.. Nobody is good or bad until proven otherwise..IMO so far so good..The draft can not get here fast enough for me..Go Bucs..

  43. The buc pessimist formerly DB55 Says:

    JoeJoe

No reason just keeping it real

  44. Eric Says:

Well the Lovie haters are going to take their shots. Wouldn’t matter who we got at OC.

looks like we made a solid choice at OC. Winston or Mariota + Evans sounds like a great combo.

Shore up the oline, get a pass rusher and were good to go.

Lost 9 games by six points or less. Go Lovie…..

  45. Self-proclaimed GM Says:

    Joe,

This thought came to me at work today. I’m not saying it’s going to happen….but it just may.

Mike Glennon has not really had a fair chance to work with good play calling and an offensive line. I don’t even think brady or brees would have had much luck playing for the bucs this past season.

If you were to pick out one QB in the league that you could compare Mike Glennon too, it would probably be Matt Ryan right?

What if we don’t draft a QB? No doubt fans would be unhappy, but what if Lovie is bringing this guy in and planning on trading the No.1 pick to stock up picks and gives Koeller a chance at working with Glennon.

Matt Ryans numbers have been his best working in his offense. Just saying, it may happen. I would personally like to see Mariotta drafted and I know others would prefer Winston. But we may not see either one.

What if Lovie smith were the head coach of the falcons the last three years running his defense? Probably much better results. Something to watch for…….

  46. Nick2 Says:

“No facets on offense played well that day.” Well he should feel right at home in Tampa.

  47. FireGoodell Says:

Will Koetter have to take a physical? Players go through physicals all the time and get cut if they fail them.

  48. IdahoBucsfan Says:

Trade the #1 pick, allow Glennon to finally work with a real QB guy, and build both Lines! This way we win for Years to come, and don’t take a chance on a sexual assault complaint that could disrupt the team, and don’t take a chance on a QB who has never lined up in a pro style offense in his life. Go With Mike Glennon! GO BUCS!

  49. LargoBuc Says:

Yea The way Atlanta just gavr up like that. Theyre not great but they got some ballers on the offensive side. For whatever reason it looks like they just quit. Its hard to beleive Carolina is that much better than them.
