Marinelli To Bucs Rumors Heating Up

January 11th, 2015
Rumors are flying Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli may be coming to Tampa Bay.

Rumors are flying claiming Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli is expected to join the Bucs.

It has been scant hours since the Dallass Cowboys lost a controversial game (Ha-ha!) to the Packers in the NFC semifinals, and already folks are pushing the notion that Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli is headed to the Bucs.

The creator, curator and overall guru of Pro Football Talk, the great Mike Florio, first got this rumormill into gear when he wrote Marinelli is “expected” to be the Bucs defensive coordinator.

Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune reached out to Bucs officials and he received a curious “no comment” comment.

Hhhmmm?

As Joe told his good friend, “The Big Dog,” Steve Duemig last week on WDAE-AM 620, Joe would be surprised if this happened. Oh, no one following the Bucs wouldn’t want this to happen, but Joe is looking at it from Marinelli’s perspective.

Marinelli has job security with the Cowboys. He has a talented bunch on defense and had a late pass play not been reversed, the Cowboys very easily could be preparing to play at Seattle next Sunday, a win shy of the Super Bowl.

On top of that, Jerry Jones could match if not exceed any check Team Glazer could or would cut for Marinelli.

And let’s be honest, how do we know Lovie Smith will be coaching the Bucs in 2016? If Lovie has another rotten year, especially if he doesn’t draft a quarterback at No. 1, then one could hear the ice cracking under his feet from Spring Hill.

Logically, it would make no sense for Marinelli to bolt Dallas for the Bucs.

The only thing that adds up is Marinelli, 65, only wants to coach a couple of more seasons before retiring, and he’d like to spend his final years coaching with his good friend Lovie.

I really hope this happens! We need a coach with some fire.

That being said, I do agree with you on those reasons for him to stay. However Jason Garretts contract also is up, and maybe he just doesn’t like working for jarrah…

  2. You go Joe Says:

maybe … Just maybe !! There is no business part to this other than just two people wanting to play together.

That or it’s the whole Oakland thing again. Driving up his value

  3. Bill Says:

I wouldn’t call the Boy’s defense ‘a talented bunch.’ Rod made chicken salad out of chicken sh#).

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Can’t use the State income tax as an issue…..Texas doesn’t have one either…..but the friendship bonds are strong….especially when you have enough money in the bank….I’m not sure salary is the only issue here….I say, he comes!!!

  5. Pewter_Power Says:

Everything I’ve ever heard about Marinelli tells me that he is an extremely loyal person. Heputs his friendships above money and job security and all of that. The Bears offered him to stay on as defensive coordinator but he refused out of respect for Lovie. Instead he left to take a lesser paying job as defensive line coach for the Cowboys to work for a head coach that at the time was on a hot seat. Does that sound like a guy that is worried about money and job security? Marinelli coming to the Bucs makes perfect sense.

  6. Architek Says:

Absolutely Joe – that’s what I tweeted and I just don’t see it happening because anyone at this stage of their career as Marinelli would want to endrure losing in the latter part of their career.

The Bucs are a project and he has a real opportunity to succeed in Dallas – I don’t see it happening.

  7. Soggy Says:

Move over frazier there is going to be new sheriff in town.. Me Hopes..

  8. Dmajik Says:

Joe — I disagree with your assumption that the Dallas gig is more stable than ours. Dont disregrard recent history just because things are rosy in Dallas this year. Every other year it’s always talk of Garrett’s job security. And for as jacked up as our organization is, Uncle Jerry runs a circus.

  9. Eric Says:

Unless of course Rod has an entirely different opinion of Lovie Smith and has complete confidence in his abilities.

    Much more likely.

  10. finishers Says:

Come on over Rod!!!!!!! That would be great…

  11. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Listen to the Buccaneer Prophet. Rod Marinelli will NOT be the Buccaneers defensive coordinator.

He will be assistent head coach.

    We’ll keep Frazier too.

  12. Eric Says:

This sounds a lot like the nonsense that a good OC wouldn’t want to work for Lovie.

That turned out to be false.

Real football people recognize the disaster that Lovie took over. So do the Glazers. He is highly respected throughout the league.

  13. Larry Says:

Can you hear “Let’s pound the rock”? Go for it Rod, we’ve missed you!

  14. mikeh Says:

that would be great! rod could take over for lovie when he gets canned.

  15. Brent Says:

    Yeah baby!!!!!! Come home.

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Predict Lovie’s approval rises in the next JBF Lovie poll…..with acquiring Koetter and really improves if Marinelli too!!!

  17. Eric Says:

I do notice that none of the other teams recognize the greatness of Mark Dominik. All these GM openings and no job offers.

    Same with Schiano.

Now there is a combo that couldn’t get assistant coaches.

    Not Lovie.

  18. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @BucBonzai

Asst HC and keep Frazier. If all these ‘chiefs” can stay out of each other’s way and mesh egos it could be an awesome brain trust. That is at least one reason Marinelli might come.

BTW Everyone at Fox was tripping over themselves praising Garrett and the entire Cowboy staff and they reported that Jones has made resigning all of them a priority. This has been a good year for the ‘boys and they feel continuity will get them that much farther next year.

Marinelli will have his choice and $$$ will be irrelevant. People forget that these guys earn millions each year at least when he was HC and he’s probably earned at least a half mill for the past ten years. He doesn’t need any money.

The ONLY reason Marinelli would leave the Cowboys would be for personal reaasons. Whether it’s a negative…coaching for Jerry Jones or a positive…reuniting with his old bud Lovie and living in paradise again. Marinelli probably has a lot of friends here.

  19. Brandon Says:

I agree with BucBonzai. Rod will likely be named assistant head coach, Frazier keeps his job, Koetter runs the O, the Bucs get back to winning, everybody is happy…except those that are so truly miserable that they hope for bad seasons so they can throw weekly online tantrums.

  20. jfat Says:

Sometimes you can eat a bit of a pay cut to work with people you enjoy being around. Money is great but it isn’t everything. I’m going to reserve my excitement for an official announcement, but it’d be great to have him back on the ship.

  21. BucBob1 Says:

Rod Marinelli wanted to come last year, but if I remember corectly, the Cowboys wouldn’t let him out of his contract. I would bet, he does come.

  22. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Maybe Marinelli likes going after snook & speckled trout around the Gandy bridge…

  23. Nate Says:

Don’t be surprised if Lebeau retired to become the DC….they lost this game on defense and I dont think Dallas believes they can be successful in the Tampa 2 anymore…don’t be shocked if that sneaky old man jones told Lebeau hes interested & made him RESIGN…not retire hmmmmmm

  24. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

I believe I mentioned this before Joe and you said “why would we do that because our defense was great”. Looks like it is almost a done deal now.

  25. Nate Says:

Oh and Joe for your answer to they’ll match the contract the bucs should make him the AC…. asst coach….thats a promotion. ..and its DONE!!

  26. Buccfan37 Says:

I’ll believe it when it happens.

  27. biggun Says:

Rod to Lovie is like Robin to Batman. See how Lovie was this year w/o his side kick !

  28. biggun Says:

Another way to look at it…. Lovie about Rod “He completes me”

  29. finishers Says:

he doesn’t need a promotion he’s a free agent! he wanted to come to Tampa last year and Jerry Jones said no because he was under contract
he wants to play with lovie And loves Tampa.

  30. Stu Laake Says:

I’ve got one word for you L-O-Y-A-L-T-Y

  31. DB55 Says:

Finally! There is a good! Thank you!!

I just went from none at all to confident with a slight lean to highly confident.

  32. []_[]Buc Says:

    Blood is thicker than water

Rod will be a Buc no matter what Jerry throws at him.
Do you honestly think he forgot Jerry’s major block this year.

  33. IStillbleedOrange Says:

Let’s let the plane land in Texas first before we hoist up the “Welcome Home Rod” banners people!

  34. DB55 Says:

Very excited, can’t wait!! Hopefully he’ll whip these boys into shape. Dirt n nails for breakfast.

  35. Aaron Says:

why would he waste his time

  36. Mort Says:

just because they refused to speculate doesn’t mean the Bucs said “No comment” to Roy.

Read the article, it’s far less fishy sounding than you imply, unless you have some other inside information that Roy omitted from his own story.

“No comment” is a far different thing than “Look, we’re not going to talk about coaches under contract with other teams” because they aren’t allowed to do so for a week.

Care to clarify your statement either way, Joes?

  37. WashingtonBuc4Life Says:

Well we will find out after next week. Even though his contract is expiring it doesn’t completely expire until one week after the team’s final game unless Jerry Jones allows him to interview and does not block his interview.

  38. Tampabaybucfan Says:

No salary cap issues with coaches salaries….perfectly feasable for Marinelli & Frazier to co-exist…..the Glazers will spend it if its necessary….

  39. Todd Says:

Rod loves working with lovie and we all know if we draft winston lovie has at least two years left here coaching

  40. Tampabaybucfan Says:

My question is “does Rod run up and down the sidlines screaming without using profanities?”……now….if that’s so, its very impressive!!!

  41. NewTampaChris Says:

You have no idea if Jason Garrett will be there and if not, who will the head coach be?

  42. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

    3 words.

    Don’t tease me.

  43. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

And bring Rolando McClain with you

  44. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Jerry can’t promote him to asst hc, Monte has that role. If Rod leaves, Monte can take over the defense again.

    Garret is going nowhere.

The one thing that could stop this is if another team offers Rod an HC job.

  45. Warthog Says:

If this happens it will be amazing. Amazing.

  46. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I called this way back when Frazier was hired.

  47. port richey george Says:

yeah lovie probably misses his old fishing and golfing buddy Marinelli.
    LOL
    🙂

  48. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

After the job he did with the Cowboys I would love this hire. It makes sense to me simply because he is 65 and best friends with Lovie. This would be awesome. Two real coordinators. In the words of Joey Lawrence woooaaaahhhhhhh

  49. fonziknows Says:

His contract is up in 7 days, he is coming to Tampa.

  50. ddneast Says:

Wow Eric, stop making sence. You said a mouthful of truth about what Lovie got himself into.
Yes, two of our FA’s he helped pick out turned out to be real clunkers, but unfortunately that is often the case with FA’s. Out of all the FA’s we have chosen in the last few years, only VJax has proven to be worth the money.
We have a great number of idiots out here who think we let go three All Pro OL from last year when we had one of the worst lines in the league.

  51. Tampa2Dominates Says:

Rod Marinelli, Rich Bisaccia, Joe Baker are the three coaches I would look for from Dallas, and Mike Tice from Atlanta. Out with Gill Bryd, George Warhop, Kevin O’Dea, and Marcus Arroyo. I would keep Andrew Hayes Stoker, he seemed to help with the receivers. Leslie Frazier and Rod could be co defensive coordinators, or Frazier could be Assistant Head Coach and Secondary coach with Joe Baker being his assistant

  52. Tampa2Dominates Says:

I know they won’t do it, but I would love Maryland receivers coach Keenan McCardell to come in here. I think he could really help Mike Evans and Robert Herron with route running, and could improve there blocking.

  53. BucCityBoy Says:

I love how he both pretends to have been in front of the story by mentioning that he speculated it previously(as if that’s the same as having an actual source) only to follow right up by hedging the other way with reasons why it may not happen. Internet “journalism” At its finest.

  54. cmurda Says:

Again, as I quote Harvey Keitel in Pulp Fiction, “Let’s not go sucking each others ***** just yet”. These things need to be official before anything is set in stone. I would love to have Rod back.

  55. BucIt941 Says:

Rod and Rich get em here!

  56. passthebuc Says:

on thee QB issue you are forgetting one thing. There is a possibility that Jones of Ohio State elects to enter the draft. Probably will be a late first rounder. and can throw better than either Winston or Mariotta, he might be a better choice that either of your loves. While warming up for the Alabama game, he would rest on one knee and from the yard line throw the ball through the uprights. On a line. Is he pro ready? However, is Winston.

  57. bucsfan1979 Says:

HELL YA!!!!!! We have missed you Rob! Come back home please!

  58. []_[]Buc Says:

    You and I both Bonzai.

  59. yansen Says:

Joe, don’t you think rod still has ties in Tampa that would make this scenario make more sense? Maybe his family always liked it in Tampa, who knows. Would love to have him though.

  60. []_[]Buc Says:

Only reason Lovie cannot confirm any type of communication with Rod is because it would be considered tampering.

He still has 7 days left on his contract with the girls.

  61. BucIt941 Says:

I will take him with open arms either as Asst. HC or DC and let Frasier move to DC Asst or Vice versa. Honestly the only reason i like Frasier is for the A.P. ties considering Minnesota may move on from the whole situation! But Marenilli is my guy. He’s the one I would love to have his hands on this defense especially the D-Line GMC has yet to have a coach of his caliber. I also believe he would get the most out of suspect characters like, Johnson, Bowers, and Clayborn permitted they are even still here. He will also do wonders for up and comers McDonald and J. Smith!

  62. Bogiedr Says:

Make sure Rich Bisachia comes home with Rod.

  63. Warthog Says:

Yeah can we get Biasaccia back? Special teams were balling outta control when he was at the helm. Think he woulda stood for the turd ST product we put on the field in 2014?! No sir.
