Denied!

Lovie Smith got shot down

Pounding the pavement for potential offensive coordinators/gurus led the Bucs to a guy with a load of diverse experience.

But his current employer wasn’t interested in letting him to talk.

Mike Mularkey, the Titans’ tight ends coach was on the Bucs’ short list of interview candidates, per NFL Network, but the Titans denied the request to grill Mularkey.

Teams don’t have to let coaches under contract interview with other teams, unless it’s for a head coaching vacancy.

It never hurts to talk, but Mularkey was not going to be the right guy for the Bucs job. Joe’s not crying over this one.

    Good this dude would’ve sucked

  2. Patrick in VA Says:

Could it have been a scheme to pick his brain about the Titans’ intentions with the #2 pick? If they could figure out what the Titans wanted and saw that it was the player that they don’t have rated as high then they could use that as leverage to swap picks and still get their guy.

Probably not the case but it’s the only thing I could come up with to explain why they’d be looking at Mularkey. Don’t think he’s a viable option

  3. DB55 Says:

    Patrick

That makes sense. But I wouldn’t put it past Lovie to hire a guy who’s team is worse than ours.

  4. bucrightoff Says:

Or, Patrick, Lovie has bad taste in OCs and actually thinks Mularkey is good. I know you don’t want to believe it, but that’s more than likely the case. T

  5. Tom Edrington Says:

    “Denied”……

Thought this might have referred to the season ticket holders who were looking for one stinkin’ home victory…..

  6. SteveK Says:

    Trestman please!

  7. DallasBuc Says:

Lovie Smith should not be in charge of hiring anyone. So far his hires are all disasters: Licht, speed-in-space Tedford, Warhop, etc.
    Revoke his hiring rights.

  8. thunderchunkyPA Says:

Joe this MUST be a home run for Lovie, or her will never get a HC job again in the NFL. Time to think outside the box some here. I am not impressed with Koetter or Roman much.

  9. The Buc Realist Says:

Joe might cry when Lovie finally finds an OC desperate enough to take this job! Even with the lure of the #1 pick this year and most likely a top 5 pick next year.

  10. warrenfb12 Says:

    Is this fair practice?

I find it disturbing these teams wont let position coaches interview for promotional opportunities.

Somebody should take a long look at this rule.

    get mariotas head coach

  12. Architek Says:

The fact Lovie even wanted to talk to Mularkey scares me –

Man this sucks having him as a decision maker.

Bucs can’t outpay Nike U, nor would the HC take a massive downgrade to be our OC. Now firing Lovie and getting Chip Kelly? Sign us all up for that.

  14. Zam Says:

    I agree with warrenfb12… it’s a lousy rule.

  15. Luther Says:

Titans did us a favor. I just hope we don’t return the favor and pick Mariota and leave Winston for them.

  16. biff barker Says:

It’s entirely fair Warren even though it’s not a lateral move. Contracts need to be honored.

  17. Piratic Says:

Joe Says: “…Mularkey was not going to be the right guy for the Bucs job. Joe’s not crying over this one.”

I’d sure like to know why you feel that way, Joe.
–Understand, I’m not being snarky, I simply value your opinion. Cheers!

  18. DB55 Says:

The hc and staff for Oregon are getting pay raise this season bc they are underpaid according to last night broadcast.

If you draft MM you better hire frost. Mm looks great bc of the high tempo read option offense called by frost. Mm doesn’t appear to be a traditional NFL qb and WILL get destroyed running the ball. I see RG3 written all over him.

  19. Scratching My Head Says:

We should be targeting a guy who is a part of the University of Oregon or the Eagles. If we are getting Mariota, our system should be similar to some degree. Going after the second worst OC in the league REALLY makes me shake my head.

  20. ManzielMadness Says:

    @DB55

Pretty sure it said Helmrich was calling the plays last night during the game, not saying frost is a bad option though

  21. ManzielMadness Says:

sorry not it – the announcers, lol early morning

  22. bucsfaninmiami Says:

    Payback for us tanking?

  23. Scott Says:

If everyone wants Mariota. Better get his OC Frost to call plays… To be honest I wasn’t impressed with Mariota. He’s running a gimmick offense could only hit the deep throw when a guy was wide open. I just don’t see him translating to the NFL. The bucs are going to be in a tough spot. I truly believe Winston will go back to FSU for next season. So we have Mariota or a trade down in our future

  24. Buccfan37 Says:

Lovie should stick to only picking his nose.

  25. Brandon Says:

Mke Mularkey was and always will be terrible. Good news for us. Focus on good offensive coordinators, not recycled garbage.

  26. Patrickbucs Says:

    @patrickva

I’ve heard Polian say teams do not really start evaluations at the top of the organization until after their season is over. There still is a huge process ahead of them as well as the players so I don’t think teams know where they are going yet.

  27. DB55 Says:

    Manzielmadness

The blonde dude in the coaches box, whoever that is/was. I understand the current hc used to be chip Kelly’s oc. I’m pretty positive the dude in the coaches box was calling the plays, brilliantly I might add. He would use the jab then come over the top with a hook. A body blow, then a jab then a haymaker. Clever indeed but the bucs do not play that way so not sure what MM will do when forced to read def find the open window and if he decides to run not get pounded into oblivion.

I think I want amari cooper he’s about the only sure thing out there. Even the kid from Usc looks impressive but would he play DE or DT? So many questions to be answered.

  28. Mike10 Says:

Why do we continue to try and reinvent the wheel. Bring in someone that failed as a head coach but got hired because they succeeded as an OC!

Now I’m sure they may want to bring several guys in to get various opinions, but I’m looking for anything to believe in the decisions L+L are making – and this is not making me any more confident.

  29. bucrightoff Says:

    Fire Lovie, go get Chip.

  30. DB55 Says:

    Bucrightoff

Didn’t chip already turn down our hc job? Isn’t he under contract?

  31. bucrightoff Says:

Yeah but there were rumours of a Harbaugh-esque power struggle in Philly. Unlike Harbaugh, Chip won and now he has full control..

  32. mikeh Says:

yeah and he was on lovies short list. pinhead lovie will screw this up too!
