Your 2014 Buccaneers Pro Bowler

December 23rd, 2014

Gerald McCoy is headed to his third consecutive Pro Bowl. Lavonte David will stay home.

Here’s a smile — and a frown — amidst this historically sour Bucs season.

Your Tampa Bay Buccaneers have one man headed to play in the Pro Bowl: Gerald McCoy.

The combined player-coach-fan votes were tabulated and justice was not served for David, who will not make his Pro Bowl debut. McCoy is going to his third consecutive Pro Bowl. It’s unclear whether he’ll be cleared to play after being put on injured reserve with a minor knee injury last week.

This year, the game is in Arizona, not Hawaii, which is why Joe is not referencing McCoy “eating pineapple.” There’s no pineapple in the desert.

Congrats to McCoy. He deserves it.

Below is the list of linebackers who did make the Pro Bowl. Joe is shaking his head, but that’s what happens to a guy like David, who plays on the one of the NFL’s worst defenses in a smaller market — on a losing team.

Outside linebacker: Connor Barwin, Eagles; Elvis Dumervil, Ravens; Tamba Hali, Chiefs; Justin Houston, Chiefs; Clay Matthews, Packers; Von Miller, Broncos.

Inside linebacker: Luke Kuechly, Panthers; C.J. Mosley, Ravens; Lawrence, Timmons, Steelers; Bobby Wagner, Seahawks.

Per NFL.com, David ranks second in the league with 141 tackles.

    Smh.

    BS…again.

  4. Connor Says:

Pro Bowl voting should be left to the coaches and players. $%$& the fans; they only vote based on popularity only.

  5. CB Buc Says:

    WTF!!
No LVD = No credibility for the Pro Bowl

  6. HawaiianBuc Says:

If you guys don’t notice, all the OLB’s are 3-4 OLB, which is essentially a DE. Crazy thing is, you can’t play a 3-4 defense in the Pro Bowl.

  7. richardtyson Says:

Aqib Talib made it though. Not surprised one bit Banks didnt, he got burned way too many times. We could have traded away another 1st rounder for one year of a pro bowl-caliber player another team drafted. Then we would have had 2 in pro bowl. Mike Evans will get in next year, maybe even ASJ.

  8. DallasBuc Says:

Hawaiian- you’ve made that point before and it comes as a shock every time. Regarding David, I think he played better and looked more dominant in Schiano’s defense. David is a terrific players and seemingly an even better person so I expect he will get there eventually once we start playing competetive football again.

  9. SteveK Says:

    London Fletcher comes to mind…

  10. "TheKevin" Says:

Lavonte David was a BEAST last year under Schiano’s defense. This year he’s a glorified tackler. It’s a shame…

  11. Buc4Life24 Says:

Are you %%$ KIDDING ME??????? I try not to get worked up about the ProBowl, cause obviously its a JOKE, but give the dude props where it’s due!

I blame Lovie and his shi*ty product he placed on the field!!!

  12. HawaiianBuc Says:

I don’t know why Lavonte made more splash plays under Schiano. The opposite should be true, since the Tampa 2 is really designed for him to be freed up to make plays. I did notice a lot of the times he was just a step slow, probably a result of not being familiar with the defense. I have zero doubt that he will have it mastered going into next year.

  13. tgreg Says:

Gee..looks like our first round pick in 2013…that Lovie gave away, made it again. What a shock. What a moron

  14. tgreg Says:

    @Hawaiian Because Lovie is clueless

  15. WINdycitybuc Says:

LVD is the primary target in the run game of OCs utilizing their interior linemen getting to the second level. Our interior DTs get shed and then they target LVD. He is going to be a sitting duck unless we get a DL that can keep the OL from getting to the second level at will.

  16. tgreg Says:

Wait! You mean Johnny Football didn’t make it! What a shock!!!!

  17. WINdycitybuc Says:

The biggest failure of this team is without a doubt, the defense. EVERYONE knows that when the A gaps are filled pre-snap, those guys are dropping into coverage. That is as predictable as it being cold in Alaska during winter. LVDs call at the line might as well be: “bluff” “bluff” “bluff” “we are bluffing” “why would we blitz”? Lovie CANNOT adapt. And that is a death sentence… Anyone with 1/3 of a brain, you would think, could evaluate NFL talent..? How did free agent signings, draft picks, & coaching work out this year? ESPECIALLY FA signings?

  18. Dave Pear Says:

The Pro Bowl voting is a popularity contest.
It’s like voting for the Prom Queen and Prom King.
Usually the captain of the cheerleaders and the QB of the football team.
Until we become a relevant, we won’t be having too many of our
players on the Pro Bowl squad.

  19. Todd Says:

Mccoy needs to skip the pro bowl no need to risk his knee

  20. DB55 Says:

    Congrats mr. mccoy.

  21. DB55 Says:

    Did Revis make it too?

  22. DB55 Says:

So essentially the bucs had an all-star team on def but we traded them all away. #itsabucslife

    Micheal Bennett
    Gerald mccoy
    LVD
    Revis
    Talib
    Banks barron
    Goldson

Can you imagine that squad playing together?

  23. Dave Pear Says:

    DB55,
    One can only dream.

  24. Stranger Says:

    @Connor

The fans voted for David last year. It was the players or coaches that snubbed him.

  25. sho nuff Says:

    *yawn
…all I see is another year sniffles the millionaire didn’t finish

  26. The don Says:

The yucks suck . We don’t deserve one pro bowler. Did McCoy make players better. He isn’t half the player Watt is

  27. Zam Says:

stupid 3-4 defenses and idiot fans

why do we even pay attention to this silly thing any more?

  28. Stranger Says:

    @The don

Watt doesn’t make the players around him better though. Watt is just Watt. If Watt can’t blow the play up, then the rest of the D is average at best. That’s why they were hoping that Clowney would be a different kind of Watt.

  29. Fort Myers Dave Says:

Maybe Lavonte David gets in when one of those selected ahead of him steps aside from an injury. Usually see several players get selected later because of injuries…. Does Joe or anyone else know if the NFL lists the 1st and snd alternates for each position????

  30. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Lavonte David doesn’t deserve it this year, people. Really, Mccoy didn’t either. About the only one on the team who did is Mike Evans, but because of the offense having such a bad rep, he didn’t make it.

Honestly, I think McCoy should make a statement and refuse the award in the order of team unity.

This is to be expected though. Yes, the defense was better under Schiano, but that’s just a one year thing as they adjust to the new way. Come next year, with a couple pieces added, they’ll dominate. That’s when they will get a bunch of guys in.

I predict within 1-2 years, the big question on peoples minds will be which defense is better? Seahawks or Tampa? (yes, under Lovie; it’s about time SOMEONE spoke positive about this teams future).

This year has been bad, real bad, but it is going to get better. Much better.

A couple pieces on defense, fix the oline & QB positions, and hired a good OC with staff. It really isn’t that bad looking forward.

  31. SSG Mike Says:

As the pro bowl has always been, A popularity contest. It has less to do with skill and more about how well your team may be doing in the headlines. All we have to do is win a bunch of games and we will be on the map again. Not surprised. LVD will get his due they can only ignore the stats for so long.

  32. Jason hull Says:

LVD left out again. the pro bowl should be canceled if this is how it works players who deserve it get screwed all the time

  33. Joe Says:

LVD left out again. the pro bowl should be canceled if this is how it works players who deserve it get screwed all the time

Even Sean Payton said he thought Lavonte David got hosed.

  34. Stranger Says:

    @Bonzai

“Lavonte David doesn’t deserve it this year, people.”

That’s BS. David is second in the league in total tackles, second in the league for solo tackles, and has more TFLs than any other non-lineman/pass rusher.

That’s with missed playing time due to injuries.

  35. Jim Says:

He’ll make the “All-Pro” team again. I hope these snubs do not affect his potential Canton run if he can sustain this level of play.
