Dashon “Hawk” Goldson weighs in

Excuses were not flowing through the Buccaneers locker room last night in the bowels of the Georgia Dome.

Words like “embarrassing” were commonplace. Dashon Goldson had a more colorful analysis.

Joe asked Goldson for his perspective on what happened and what went wrong.

“I played poorly and we lost the game. Atlanta came to play, put a whoopin’ on us on nationally televised TV, nationally televised, butt whoopin’, old fashioned ass-whoopin’,” Goldson said.

Goldson didn’t want to question his teammates’ effort, but he acknowledged nobody on the Bucs was an impact player.

“I’m not sure what happened,” Goldson said. “I can just speak for myself, man. I didn’t make enough plays. They didn’t make enough plays. It cost us the game, man.”

Goldson suggested there is only one solution to what ails the Bucs: “Watch the film, correct it, see what we gotta do and move on from there,” Goldson said.

At least Goldson is treated with respect by Lovie.

  2. Jon Says:

Julio jones makes awesome TD catch, mike Evans drops his chance at a great catch. Is Michael Johnson on this team? Where did the 150 million go? Over the QBs head I think.

  3. NewTampaChris Says:

Maybe they can get better pass rushers…guys like Michael Bennett and Wallace Gilberry.

  4. Nic Says:

Lets give it up for Mark Barron, who gets a turnover that MIGHT make it a watchable football game again only to hold the ball like a newborn and get stripped by Devin Hester.

Let that sink in everyone, Devin Hester is better at taking the ball away than 90% of our defense.

  5. rhenry Says:

The trash the Glazers hire and put on the field is all by design. Greasing the fan base up before the jamming as they head off to L.A or England.

  6. passthebuc` Says:

To say it was an embarrassment would be a complement.

  7. passthebuc` Says:

We have gone from toes on the line to, what’s a line

  8. Patrick in VA Says:

@rhenry – at this point, do you think they’d get a fight if they took the team away?

  9. JT Says:

Hm. Maybe Schiano wasnt so bad afterall. Maybe our roster was just a bunch of whiney little girls.

  10. Bill Says:

This is team is paying for the sins of the previous regime (though this was terrible).
Rock star left no depth, very little talent–yet somehow no cap space.
Overpaid players caused this regime to dump half its talent just to be able to put together a 53-man roster.
There is little comparison to this team and the ’96 team–a team that started slow and evolved as the season progressed. The primary reason is there is little young talent–especially role players.
We can only hope Barron, Foster, Evans, etc. develop. But on defense (Claiborn, Bowers, Foster, Barron, etc.) it seems less likely than ever.

  11. Teacherman777 Says:

Schiano was like Lombardi, Parcels, or Belicheck!

But our players were divas like josh freeman.

So we ran him out of town.

But schiano, if he had been given another 3 years, wouldve turned us into contenders.

    I also love Lovie.

But our two safeties are terrible for this system!

    They both run 4.6’s!!!

    Thats on Dom!

  12. Bucnjim Says:

You know it’s really bad when the fans of the WINNING team leave in the 3rd quarter of a prime time game.

  13. Jim Says:

Positive note – I do not see the Bucs raising ticket prices next year for those of us that are stupid enough to buy season tickets! I have had season tickets since 1977 and sat through the 0-26 days. At least back then, we did see a good play once in a while.

Lovie may be a decent coach, but his coordinators are killing him. Tedford’s health issues could not be predicted so I’give him a pass on that one. His replacement should not be calling plays in a high school game. Why throw a wheel route to Rainey who is 5’8″ when you have two receivers 6’5″?

Frazier stinks! He can not make game time adjustments. If the Bucs are going to win three games, Lovie better start calling the defense and if Tedford doesn’t return soon, let the qb call the plays

  14. phil Says:

Can we please get some “FIRE LOVIE” billboards put up in Tampa. Whenever the billboards talk the Glazer’s listen.

  15. Bucnjim Says:

Also not a good sign when your team captains quit and start looking for ways out of here. If you watched the entire game you know exactly what I am talking about. Every offensive leader on that team QUIT!

  16. Pvine Says:

Awful display of football, just awful…….the uniforms fit also-awful!
    Season over folks!

  17. Patrick in VA Says:

Can we ask the NFL for a mulligan on the uniform change thing. I don’t care whether they look good or bad, we’ve been a terrible team since we put them on #curseoftheclock

  18. topcoach1978 Says:

I put so much emotion heading into a season when I think we’ve finally got our crap together and then this….blown coverages, sacks, bad play calling on defense & offense, drops, fumbles, penalties, interceptions, injuries, poor tackling, last night was a total embarrassment im waving my white flag I gotta take all my emotions out of this team cause all they do is make excuses and repeat what they say on camera every week with no adjustment to anything so IM DONE!!!!

  19. flmike Says:

Ya know, maybe this team just ain’t buying the dated sh!t Lovie is selling…

  20. MadMax ™ Says:

Welcome to the gang guys…those of you “not wanting to watch”….I didnt even try to watch, took a sneak peek at yahoo and saw the 35-0 halftime score and just laughed and shook my head. I know I saw enough in the first 2 games to know this is a JOKE year for us…I figured we’d get blown out in this one….and wouldve if Glennon hadnt come in. May as well just stick with him…the experience can only help!!!

And 1987, Im laughing with those laughing at the Bucs….I told em is what it is, at least at this rate, we’re picking in the top 3 next draft, probably 1st….smh….just write the season off and laugh….maybe this is part of Lovie’s plan in order to get his QB and DE. Gotta try to find a bright side somewhere among all of this pitiful showing of ineptitude!!

  21. JT Says:

I knew this game was gonna be ugly but damn.

  22. Zam Says:

After 3 games, no headhunting penalties against Goldson. I respect a guy like that who can alter his game so radically, and he went back to one of his first coaches (Pop Warner?) to teach him how to tackle better.

That kind of humility deserves a lot of praise. He’s a credit to the team right now. Give him a d-line that can pressure more than once a game and he’ll do good things from that Safety position.

  23. flmike Says:

    @Teacherman777
Dom didn’t draft nor sign Goldson or Barron to play in the outdated Tampa 2 defense…

  24. darin Says:

    @Jim..
I feel your pain. But as a kid back then I could afford to buy a $6 ticket on my 4$ an hour salary. Its too bad all the fair weather fans raised ticket prices back in the day by jumping on the ticket waiting list. Only to be invisible when their time came. The team needs us more when the team sucks. Unfortunately lovie told me not to be patient, so I won’t. That disaster last night took the rest of my patience. And I’m sure I’m not the only one. Not the first time I wished the night before was a nightmare but definitely the first time it was a bucs game.

  25. Chef Paul Says:

This team is full of quitters. I’m tired of watching them quit. . They’re always quitting. If you are a person that can go into One Buc without security hassling you, you deserve to be fired. Fire yourselves too while you are at it Glazers!!

Not one person in this organization did their job this week. I bet even the f*cking towels were dirty and the water was filled with mud.

  26. BoJim Says:

The only time I get to see the Bucs on TV this season. Every time I turned my head the Falcons had scored. Glad I was watching alone. I’ve been building the Bucs up all season and pre season to anybody that would listen. But I still love em Dammit. I’ve been with em since the beginning and will be with them till the end. Go Bucs!!!

  27. Jon Says:

@Bill. The previous regime didn’t get rid of four starting offensive lineman. They didn’t pick McCown to be a good quarterback. They didn’t buy Michael Johnson to watch the games without getting any sacks. This crew could have signed Michael Bennett. They could have drafted a QB. Good thing we have glennon to at least see a young QB play this year. Blaming the past is a joke. They had millions and millions of dollars to buy whoever they wanted. Thankfully Dominik did those types of contracts to be able to do whatever, however what they did this offseason was flat out terrible.

  28. Tampabay Jack Says:

    There is one positive take-a-way.

The Buc’s have only one way to go moving forward and that is UP!!!

  29. Greg Says:

The teams website won’t even show the entire after game press conference. I wanted to see what our savior Lovie had to say.what a joke

  30. Sapp, STFU Says:

    Brutal. Just brutal.

Defense looked like they hadn’t watches one frame of game tape on Falcons. Bit on every fake. And crowed on the wrong receiver like a street-ball game.

On the optimistic side: when you’re this low, you could climb up a lot.

But who cares about that. Reality is we have to watch this drivel for 13 more games. And the best QB in the draft is a character Lovie wouldn’t touch. WTF

  31. OB Says:

    Joe

At least one person had the balls to say what happened without any excuses. Now they have 10 days to change the offense, defense, and special teams play book and cast of characters. They should release all the deadwood including coaches. Hire off the street and see if any can and want to play. What is the worst that can happen, we go win less, just like we are.

  32. TonyD Says:

It’s only going to get worse. That was the first starting QB Tampa faced this year and got hammered. I thought I was back in 1976.

My daughter, who does not like the sport, walked by the TV and commented on how bad the unis look.

  33. schmuckaneer Says:

At least Goldson admits he’s bad. I’ve never seen a starting safety play out of position so much. Nearly every passing TD this season is on him. When Banks released Julio to Goldson and Goldson instead of staying in his zone which would have covered Julio runs away from his responsibility in the endzone to cover a RB who was ALREADY COVERED…I knew it was going to be a historical night for Julio.

Matt Ryan literally laughed after that TD. lol

  34. Cliff in Lexington, KY Says:

Let the Winston vs Mariota debate ring loud and proud. We are in the number one overall pick sweepstakes, and, this year, not looking to trade down. HOLY , that was bad. I don’t think we will be asked to play on national TV anytime soon, and really, should we be? It was beyond horrible. It was embarasing, and the team should burn that game film and use the next ten days to figure out if we can win playing an antique defense that every other team has the blueprint on how to beat it and BEAT IT WELL. we have no OC and a shitty DC, and our special teams coach should be flogged and fired, in that order. I am a devout BUCS fan, and can’t think of one good thing to say, although, it would be fake and useless. I just hope FSU can get famous Jameis to straighten up and fly straight, because I feel like he is the opening day starter next year. Otherwise, its gonna be a long, long time before we are ever a team that can compete on Sundays. LONG TIME!!!!!!!!!

  35. RealityCheck Says:

“I played poorly” is code for “I’m not a good player.” This isn’t golf where you just have a bad day. This is dudes running and hitting. If you don’t play well, you’re not good. How many times has Lavonte David not played well?

  36. Aubpierce Says:

This all started when Mckay left.

  37. darin Says:

THAT ZONE DEFENSE will get shredded every week so long as the players are spectators like us. Cover a receiver and stop watching the damn quarterback. Matt Ryan probably couldn’t believe all the open receivers on the field. If you’re rushing 4 how in the world is everyone open? That’s rhetorical don’t answer that please. Cmon lovie tighten up

  38. Thebucssuck14 Says:

Dashon goldston should have called one player out. Frikin johnathan banks looked lost last night got burned and was out of place numerous times over and over again.

  39. Mike Buc Says:

This team has no future. Not for along time. Not until the Glazers and everyone on down the ladder start to get with the trends of the modern day NFL. Tampa 2 is dead and so is a Lovie Smith style defense. You need a staff the like Seahawks, or the 49ers..look at their coaches and look at the presentations they put on every Sunday. Those are real football teams, those are teams that can compete in this league, not this ugly 1990’s style football that is not only boring to watch but it’s doesn’t even work!

I’m telling you now, all my fellow Bucs fans, this team will go another few years looking half-average or worse until the HC is fired again just like that last two. And then, if the Glazers decide to think outside the box and hire an interesting coach then maybe just maybe things will start to look up from there. Or they can crap their pants again and hire an old coach with an old style that doesn’t work anymore. It will be another 10 years from now before we have a chance at the Lombardi Trophy, yes folks, an entire decade.

Look at is this way, it’s all familiar and it should be..we are a losing team and always have been. We had 6 good seasons with that good defense that one time. Other than that we have stunk, and will always stink. It’s a Bucs life.

  40. Broy34 Says:

Why hasn’t anyone asked: what quarterback we drafting. U wanna see a turnaround? It starts with getting a QB with a set of testicles. Glennon played the 2nd half yet the mob is silent

  41. Buccfan37 Says:

No other team in the NFL could get blown out like the Bucs did last night, and look so lost and pitiful out there on the field. It was a comedy of errors and the joke is on loyal Buc fans. The ridicule is much deserved.

  42. Buccfan37 Says:

So you thought Glennon was going to come on the field after that start and rally the Bucs for a win?

  43. Mike Buc Says:

Glennon doesn’t have what it takes, if he did then he would be on a team somewhere Starting. We need an elite QB jus like @Broy is saying. But as a team, we have never ever had an elite QB. We had Brad Johnson who only won us a Super Bowl because the Defense shut teams down to the point of embarrassment. It’s just not our style, Glazers don’t get it. For example, we are starting Josh McCown. Yes, a guy who has bounced around the league and hasn’t done anything stellar his whole career, and the guy is in his mid thirties! What is this a joke?

  44. ShutTheBucUp Says:

I’m generally optimistic, but I’m considering boycotting everything Bucs until the Glazers sell the team.

  45. Mike Buc Says:

Brad Johnson went 18 for 34 with 215 yards, 2 TD’s and 1 INT in the Super Bowl victory over the Raiders. We were 6/15 on third down! Those are terrible numbers for an offense. Proof that our defense won us that game (will 3 touchdowns) and all the games leading up to it.

Our defense doesn’t look up to the task this year..so buckle up for a long bumpy ride.

  46. Greg Says:

I say keep GMC, LVD, Evans, Simms and ASJ. Trade VJ, Mankins, EDS, Martin and Glennon for picks, then cut everyone else and hire all the practice squad members from the five best teams in the NFL. I guarantee you that team would be more competitive than what the Bucs are putting on the field right now! This is not fixable, 2/3s of the Bucs starters wouldn’t play for any other team in the NFL, and the backups wouldn’t be in the NFL at all!

  47. AnotherJ Says:

The way our DB’s were getting torched last night, You would’ve swore EJ Biggers was still out there…

  48. Mike Buc Says:

@Greg Our receiving core is a joke sans Jackson and Evans. Like who are these guys?

  49. RealityCheck Says:

I don’t see why GMC would want to play for this team next year, even at top dollar. You’d be signing up to play for what you know will be a bad team for years. At the end of the day, these guys still want to win football games.

  50. ShutTheBucUp Says:

Its clear that no one wants to play for this team.

  51. Jimbo Says:

Mark Barron is not a good a football player. Never mind the fumble. That was just a ridiculous play that could only happen to the Bucs. However, the reality is this guy never makes plays. He can’t cover, he’s always two steps behind. Even when he is gifted a turnover right in his hands, that ends up in disaster. I try to defend these guys, try to believe. It’s getting harder and harder to do that…

  52. ToesOnTheLine Says:

    The Mob is silent because
    (1) the Mob is a ficticious group created by savvy web host to generate traffic towards savvy webhost’s awesome Bucs site
    (2) we are all too focused on more pressing things like a clueless coaching staff and a defense that already checked out in game 3 of the season

Mike actually played the hand he was dealt fairly well…just like he did last season. I’m sure there are still some idiots pining for Pineapple McCown’s glorious return though.

  53. BucFan20 Says:

Knew it would not be long before a couple of morons would be on Glennon because he did not stage a come back. His own players screwed him time and time again. I for one will wait and see what happens when he takes regular first string reps. IF they keep him starting.

  54. Skyline Crew Says:

C/ATT YDS AVG TD INT SACKS QBR RTG
    M. Glennon 17/24 121 5.0 1 0 2-18 70.0 96.0
    J. McCown 5/12 58 4.8 0 1 1-8 1.9 22.2

Glennon should start. He was also our best rusher. HAHA…so much for not being mobile.

  55. Posey99 Says:

Leslie frazier should be fired today. I would give the offense a pass simply because tedford is out and mccown has played poorly.

  56. Owlykat Says:

There were a few positives: Our backup MLB was outstanding as was Lanasah at SLB. They need to start from now on. I saw no other positives last night. Licht should have come up with the money for Hester who Lovie wanted here badly! The Wyoming Flash, Herron, has stone hands and needs to be on the Practice Squad til he can catch.

  57. Posey99 Says:

Vincent jackson had more drops and pushoffs than he did catches.

  58. Sledd Says:

Phil Simms said “he has never seen a game where the receivers were so wide open, all the time, with big open spaces surrounding them to catch and run” then they showed video of what he was saying, graphics with big red “zones” of open space around the Atlanta receivers…obviously no pass rush from the Bucs, but the Tampa 2 aint working, at all…and that’s only #356 on the list of “What’s wrong with the Bucs”!!

  59. Greg Says:

VJ’s not stupid, why take the pounding for this crappy team? Trade him for a draft pick or two, send him to Patriots or Broncos so he can have a break out year. The ONLY way this team has a chance of turning itself around is with many draft picks, but even then, do we really want L&L wasting those picks with their below average ability to recognize talent?

  60. BucthisIsh Says:

OK…I’ve been coming to this site for about 2 years now, and am NOW finally going to post a comment…WTF was that last night? 3rd and 17 and we are in a base 4-3 while they come out in a 4 receiver set? You’re joking right Mr. Frazier?

  61. Soggy Says:

Ya please no glennon seal clubbing, not today…

  62. Fort Myers Dave Says:

My thoughts right now after letting that 56-14 @ss blasting sink in: 1) With the first overall pick of the 2015 NFL draft The Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Marcus Mariota, QB University of Oregon. 2) How come other franchises can rebuild and not be ****ing 0 and forever to start every damn season???? 3) How nice would it be if someone committed to actually being competitive severy year actually owned the Bucs like Eddie DeBartolo??? 4) Long suffering Tampa Bay Buc fans take way to much abuse from these inept owners, coaches and players for the simple fact that we are misled year in and year out that this team is ready to turn the corner; I wish for once that someone could be held accountable for last night drilling immediately without all the BS that I am sure we will hear from Lovie in the next few days…. TBARF: Tough Being A Real (Bucs/Yucks) Fan….

  63. james west Says:

yes, this team had the look of their H.C. & D.C. which is on display during every game when the camera man pans the sideline. and that was one of total bewilderment. at least they were all on the same page, right? someone has to be held accountable for the drubbing this club has been taking on the defensive side of the ball. lovie if you are the guru of the defense then fire frazier and start calling your own plays and formations. tedford hope you get well in ten day’s because this mystery offence sucks. as well as your starting QB. hope it looks better against the steelers. oh well another embarrassing year. at least were used to it…

  64. SgtMajor Says:

It wouldn’t be so bad if we didn’t hear that comment every week from the Bucs locker room.(watch the film and move on from there) Where do the Bucs think they are going to move onto? When every week they play the same way. So far the only thing I’ve seen is that they keep moving onto playing worst.

  65. Marlow Says:

“Maybe Schiano wasn’t so bad afterall. Maybe our roster was just a bunch of whiney little girls.”

    This says it all!

  66. Kevin#1 Says:

Zone defense. Did anyone notice when they played man coverage that at least the falcons receivers HAD to make good catches. Every time we were playing man we had at least one guy right there to fight and try to make a play.

With that said they still failed to break up the pass or get turnovers, but my point is that when they put the zone defense out, the receivers were wide open. The Tampa Two is only going to be effective if we have the all star team needed to run it. We don’t and won’t anytime soon.

I think the entire team knows thus and also knew that Lovies offensive plan going into the game for the past three weeks has been a lost cause. The entire team quit because they knew what was about to happen after losing….GETTING BURNED by two backup quarterbacks.

Something has to change this week. A LOT has to change right now. If Lovie doesn’t change his approach then why even watch the games anymore? I won’t. I’ll watch this week against Pittsburgh. Tedford SHOULD be calling plays. If he is I will be watching the play calling. Tedford does not call the games we have seen the past three weeks. If next week is the same old same then I’ll check back in after week 8 because as a born and raised Bucs fan this is painful. It’s every season and it sucks knowing that as a fan I put more thought into our team than the coach. If he gave a crap he would adjust and he is not….just like Schiano, Is this strategy somehow? If so I cannot see it. There is a giant hole in the Bucs ship and she is nosediving!!!How sad….glad I at least have a fantasy team to be optimistic about. Here’s hoping next week is better….CHEERS!!!

  67. Jaycee Says:

Nobody with a name like Marcus Mariota will be a good QB in the NFL…maybe for a Goodfellas sequel, now we’re talkin.
