Lousy NFC South Fuels Hope For Bucs

September 29th, 2014

McCownlaughEvery NFC South team not named “Tampa Bay” got smoked yesterday. Not just beaten, but beaten soundly.

Yes, Joe was watching as the chants of “Ted-dy, Ted-dy, Ted-dy” filled the Vikings’ home field against the roasted Falcons.

The Saints offered no resistance to the Cowboys’ offense last night, losing 38-17 in Jerry’s world.

And Carolina was similarly chain-whipped in Baltimore. The Panthers are not the same offense without Cam Newton running the football (just two carries for seven yards). And the Panthers defense, sackless, yesterday, was handled easily by Jeremy Zuttah and the Ravens’ offensive line. Ravens 38, Panthers 10.

Here are your NFC South standings.

Atlanta  2-2
Carolina 2-2
Bucs   1-3
Saints 1-3

Who would have thought? No, it’s too early for the Bucs to start talking about playoff miracles, but it’s hard not to hope.

The Bucs will have to win the division as the wildcard will not be coming out of this division the way things have gone over the first quarter of the season.

  2. bucrightoff Says:

A win next week means there can be a season. After the disasterous start to be possibly tied at the top (albeit at 2-3) would be ridiculous and could give them a big lift. At worst a win will have them 1 game back. Division is quite bad right now.

  3. robert9 Says:

i still don’t think the bucs have a prayer unless the defense does the same type of 180 the offense just did.

the D is just too soft in this scheme or the playcalling is too soft. I don’t think it’s the players though.

    couple opinions:

major wright played more like ronde and seemed better than the hawk

barron, i’m starting to believe those that say he aint that good… that or the scheme just does not suit him

casillias and mason foster should stay on the bench. both their replacements play better and seem to be built better for the job. i.e. longer arms, leaner and quicker, bowers might prove us all wrong???.

but the D still is weak. the steelers were wide open yesterday and had some key drops luckily for us.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We need to win at NO……simple as that….but we are wounded….and really have some major problems with our pass defense…..we need to find some way to stop Graham and can’t let Brees pick us apart like Ryan.
My answer is to jam their recievers on the line…..man up on them and blitz Brees….he is a different QB with pressure.
As far as Graham is concerned…..I’m not sure there’s a good answer there….
    Any suggestions?

  5. robert9 Says:

they should assign either verner or or our #2 DB on him…maybe jenkins. either way, a LB (maybe david could) or DE aint gonna cut it lol. He needs to be covered on every play.

  6. andres Says:

@robert9 The defense had 5 sacks, what more of a turn around do you need? It’s turning around, maybe not a 180 yet but it was defiantly a 90 degree turn yesterday.

  7. robert9 Says:

5 sacks, but that left the TE wide open, couple with the fact that the DB’s are playing too soft/deep.

maybe they just need time to gel with the systen, but leaving the TE wide open is something that needs to be addressed asap…..and with brees coming up, so does the soft zones.

big shout out to the five sacks though. now get it done with 4 D lineman, like the old bucs.

  8. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

6 sacks I think…5 in the first half. Plus they limited the run to under 100 yards I believe. Banks was on top of his game for the most part yesterday, except in a few cases. He’s showing improvement.

Guys are still leaving assignments from time to time, but it happened less yesterday than the week before.

Steelers penalties won us the game though.

Joe, you’re on tape and in print that the Bucs season is over. You’ve thrown the towel in already and have self appointed yourself as the General of the ridiculous Glennon Mob (how bad are the Steelers feeling today). You’ve flip flopped on the QB and now you’re trying to flip flop on the season. You’re what we call a bandwagon fan that changes with the wind.

  10. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

5 sacks is right. My bad. Thought there was one late in the second half.

I’m sorry, sir, but you have your understanding of a “bandwagon fan” wrong.

Someone who threatens to or stops being a fan of a team because they are losing is what a bandwagon fan is.

Joe never threatened to stop following the team. In fact, he makes his living by following the team. That’s about as far from a bandwagon fan that he can get.

However, you are right about the flip-flopping. Here’s the thing though…it is okay to change an opinion based on circumstances. People do it all the time. I bet you did it yesterday.

For example, how many times, especially in the last two minutes, did you decide the game was over? I know I did. But then, with less than 10 seconds on the clock, weren’t you thinking “Oh my god, we might win this!”

That is flip-flopping. I did it too, so don’t feel bad. I gave us no chance to win that game coming into it. Statistics were against us. History was against us. The Steelers are a good team.

The fact that they are a good team says a lot. If the Bucs can show consistency and improvement, we could very well win the division (knock on wood).

  12. Joseph Mamma Says:

That’s Jerrah World, Joe not Jerry’s world. Come on man.

  13. robert9 Says:

i never thought the game was over with glennon slinging the rock.

i did however threaten to become a dolphins fan, cause my little girl is…..but hey i been called a bandwagon fan for years…but i’m still here.

  14. dmatt Says:

For starters we need to get back to the basics… manage the play clock n catch the freaking ball!!! No more excuses for VJ, he’s a pro n is paid too much for the number of drops over the past two years. Other receivers have an “oh what” attitude when they mimick his drops all because he’s never held accountable. ACollins could have cost us the last td to VJ cause it was obvious he was holding but what the heck… the refs owed us one i.e., ABrown td push off on Turner in the end zone. Banks is starting to remind me of EJ Biggers/Myron Lewis. He often seems lost. Plain n simple jam receiver at the line n b physical within five yards for a chance to throw receivers off their route, chance for QB sack, fumble, tip pass, or disruption. Can someone plz tell me what happen with the dunkaneers hype during OTA’s n preseason. Just throw the ball up… we have the height n sense of direction for the ball. If we open each game with an up tempo offense the way we played the steelers in the 4th quater, hands down we’ ll go toe to toe with the best n a win. Lovie’s gotta come off the status quo n pride n adapt to the way teams r scoring today. He said he had a year in his basement to reflect, regroup, n rethink how to approach things. Brees will open up firing the cannon, let’s show them what Glennon can do for 4 quarters. Plz work with Patton, he’s not a Devin Hester. He needs more coaching. Hats off to great blocking from the OL. By mid season they’re more than jelling.

  15. csidedave Says:

If Joe didn’t change his view based on the current things he sees, then he would be accused of being a stubborn ole fart. Exactly what a lot of coaches are accused of.

  16. StPeteBucsFan Says:

If I may steal the line from the late great sportscaster Chris Thomas. Still has the studio at WDAE named after him and for good reason. He was bright, funny, and very well informed.

Chris Thomas used to say that NFL stood for No Freaking Logic!!

My father was a bookie. I know which side the odds favor which is why I’m not betting man. If I was however I’d lay off the NFL and pick college games which are far more predictable.

  17. Buccfan37 Says:

Love the division teams all getting knocked for a loop. You can make all the excuses of why the Bucs beat Pittsburgh, such the opponents amount of penalties, but the real reason is the Bucs just flat out outplayed them. Poor Steeler fans pissed off because they thought they got BEAT by an inferior team. F&#k the reelers, they’ve won enough, wait till you see how crappy your season finishes chumps.

  18. Josh P Says:

Robert9 agreed the D does need to improve in the middle of the field. But as for making the playoffs, its not that far of a long shot. Not that its saying much, we do have the 2nd best total D in the division. Carolina 25th Tamap 27th NO 30 and ATL 31.. Everyone is equal bad right now so anything can happen..

  19. Gene Says:

If not for McClown we could be 3 – 1. Glennon is the clear starter from here on out. I pitty the coaching staff if they consider otherwise. Josh will be a fine backup. Go bucs.

  20. Espo Says:

Oh I thought the season was over? Let’s start talking about the draft. There’s always next season. Lovie was a bad hire.

  21. MR. T Says:

This was a great win no doubt but I’m not going to get to excited until we string together 3 or 4 of them in a row then we’ll know we’ve really turned the corner

  22. pick6 Says:

it’s too bad 2 of our 3 losses were to division rivals. we have to win the rematch just to negate the tiebreaker. at this moment the bucs are 2 games behind the saints & panthers, not 1. hope we can avoid the trifecta in new orleans, but i’m already having nightmares about a 220 yard 3 TD day by Jimmy Graham
