Lane Not Worried About Numbers

A two-way player?

Man, the Bucs have a crowded backfield. First, there is the Muscle Hamster himself, Doug Martin, plus Charles Sims, Bobby Rainey and Mike James. Pretty good stable of backs.

Then there is Jorvorskie Lane, a Texas A&M guy. He’s one of those birds who is nearly on the endangered species list. A fullback.

Lane looks the part, about as wide as he is tall and virtually all muscle. He’s 5-11, 256. Can you say battering ram?

But in Jeff Tedford’s offense, can a fullback last, much less survive? With all the curveballs Tedford throws with multiple looks, formations and players, it is hard to see Lane making it to opening day.

Lane isn’t paying attention to what he cannot control. He’s paying attention to what he has to do on the football field.

“I really don’t pay any attention to that right now,” Lane said about the numbers game. “When my play is called, I am going out there to play ball. I’m not concerned if they are going to use [a fullback] one or not. My ultimate goal is to make the team.

“[Lovie Smith] gave us numbers [of how many, if any, fullbacks the Bucs may keep] once before but right now, I’m just worried about making the 53-man [roster].

“[Lovie] just said the best 53 will play.”

The thing about Tedford’s offense, even though Lane is sort of a football dinosaur, Lane noted he is not relegated to the sidelines just because he is a fullback.

“I am loving the offense,” Lane said. “Jeff is doing a really good job of utilizing everyone to their strengths so we will have a successful offense.”

Is Lane a good enough fullback to hang around for the regular season? Time will tell, he said.

“I will let [coaches] judge that,” Lane said. “I will show them on film. I am just an overall football player. I am ready for it. I am good for [special teams]. I am good for it. Defense, if you want to put me out there, I can play that too.”
