“I Stand Corrected” On Lavonte David

July 4th, 2014

A top NFL analyst admits he screwed up

Lavonte David snubs are becoming as commonplace as Michael Clayton drops.

David has become a Rodney Dangerfield of sorts in some NFL circles.

Joe’s got immense respect for noted NFL analyst Pat Kirwan, the former Bucs scout and Jets linebackers coach under Monte Kiffin who later became a Jets personnel chief. Kirwan’s analysis is insightful as a host on SiriusXM NFL Radio, and the book he authored on Xs and Os was excellent.

But Joe was almost ready to write off Kirwan after he omitted Lavonte David from his recent Top 100 players list for CBSSports.com.

Kirwan, however, was called out on the David omission by colleague Prickly Pete Prisco, and Kirwan was classy and wise enough to admit he screwed up.

“I stand corrected,” Kirwan said of the David snub. Kirwan added he would accept an “F-grade” for his list.

“I didn’t realize the guy had made,in two years, 50 plays behind the line of scrimmage between tackles for loss and sacks,” he said.

It baffles Joe that so many forget David turned in 100+ tackles last year along with six sacks and five interceptions, the first linebacker in history to accomplish those marks in one season.

It’s becoming clear the David’s quiet professionalism is keeping him under the radar. A winning Bucs team — and a top-10 defense — should change that in a hurry.

Kirwin is just like all the other national “analysts”, if the team is not winning they don’t really follow it and throw out crap info: “garbage in – garbage out”. This is the same dumb-a$$ that had McCoy ranked as the 4th best DT; How can one respect Kirwin’s opinion?

That will change this year under Lovie. When the D starts putting up great numbers, “analysts” like Kirwin will suddenly get smarter.

    R.I.P Rappin’ Rodney

And… I don’t put much into Prisco either. He currently is projecting the Bucs as the 26th best team for this season; essentially where we ended 2013 with a 4-12 record. That is ridiculous. (but not as ridiculous as Fox projecting the Bucs at #32) And more ridiculous, IMO, is Prisco has the stinking Panthers at 17. No way we finish below Carolina. Who are the Panthers going to throw the ball to? Who is going to block at LT?

Atlanta also has a lot of question marks. Prisco has them at #10. We are 16 spots lower than the Falcons?? I think the Bucs have a chance to battle ATL for 2nd place in the NFC South depending on how Tedford’s offense produces.

LVD reminds me a lot of Brooks, who was a quiet leader at first as well. He just got the job done.

  5. SAMCRO Says:

It’s a shame, but to often guys are left in obscurity because of their teams wins/loss record. It shows that Kirwan is a talking head who clearly does no research. He just lives off his reputation and figures he doesn’t have to put in the work to be accurate. The sad part is, he still gets paid to be lazy.

Kirwan does loads of research and has loads of access. No way he could pull off his daily show on NFL Radio without it. –Joe

    In a damn hurry!!

  7. OB Says:

Glad you caught this change, with the Task Force (defense) rolling, the opponents will not be able to see the Forest (receivers) from the trees.

Three weeks and have a Happy and safe 4th.

  8. Biff Barker Says:

Glad to see Kirwan own the omission. LVD’s short NFL career statistics speak loudly.
The snub is due mostly to him playing for a miserable franchise.

  9. Rrsrq Says:

This is incredibly ridiculous, how can you respect an NFL analyst who are supposed to be students of football, not just teams and Mis one of the best players in the league, I get that we know because he is local, but we don’t have access to the film study they supposedly have. Anyone could see this guy has “balled out” the last two seasons. O. J. Simpson played on terrible buffalo teams, but he was must watch t.v., not saying LVD has that kinda “juice” but he has that much impact on the other side of the ball, and football analyst should KNOW that

  10. Buccfan37 Says:

David to some is the invisible man, apparently.

  11. Pierce Says:

How did he not realize this? And I wonder how often that happens. That’s ridiculous!

  12. Snook Says:

Brooks wasn’t ever that big of a name until the Super Bowl season and his DPOY. Quiet guys. Smaller market. Pretty typical.

    Just win.

  13. Brandon Says:

I figure if you’re putting a list together, you have to at least look at the All-Pro teams and figure out where those guys belong first. David was first-team All-Pro, he got the recognition he deserved, who cares if somebody left him out on a list that was probably thrown haphazardly together?

  14. BigMacAttack Says:

At least Kirwan went back to the film room and proved himself wrong. Pat knows football and now that he’s actually seen Lavonte play a little, he’ll be a big fan.

  15. RichinNC Says:

He will need to fire the intern who was to do that research for him.

  16. Jim Walker Says:

If David played for the Eagles he would be plastered all over sports outlet in the US.

  17. DallasBuc Says:

“Kirwan does loads of research and has loads of access. No way he could pull off his daily show on NFL Radio without it. –Joe”… Clearly!

  18. Bucfan77. Says:

I would like to see just one positive reporting on our team without qualifying. The media is down on our Bucs including the hometown boys lead by the old hound dog. Some still smarting after the crash and burn of their fair hair boy Freeman and others because their allegiance is to their old northern teams. Say what you will, it’s time for the local press to do more than spend time in the press box eating Glazer food drinking Glazer beer and batching about how bad the team is. I doubt if even Norman Vincent Peel could get them to think positive. Joe you need to work your friendship ties to try to turn this around.

  19. Louis Friend Says:

Losers don’t get press. Unless it’s the bad variety. Dallas and New Orleans and Atlanta have gotten plenty of press. Heck, even the Cardinals are getting more air time after a solid season. If the Bucs are worthy of attention nationally, it’ll come. Always did before.

  20. BucWild151 Says:

SAMCRO I could not agree more…I usually agree with most things Joe says but Kirwan obviously has no idea what he is talking about when it comes to LVD or GMC. Obviously Kirwan doesn’t do his research about LVD if he has Kuechly number 6 and LVD not mentioned. Usually don’t comment but had to say something. Joe seems like he’s sucking up to Kirwan…

“He will need to fire the intern who was to do that research for him.”

Yeah. I think his head will roll.

  22. Paul Says:

My grandma started losing her mind and at 90 she couldn’t even recall who I was. It’s sad to see peoples mind go away.

  23. Jim Walker Says:

Heck if Lavante David played for the Steelers, Eagles, Jets, Giants, or the Patriots he would be on the cover of Madden this year.

  24. Seidler52 Says:

Lavante David was a class act and leader at UN-L! The Bucs had a mess going on. He was a ray of hope, became a leader, & has proven his worth by performance! NOW, where the hell can I get a new Bucs jersey with his name and number! #Go Big Red #Go Bucs
