“Gronkowski-Type Tendencies”

May 12th, 2014

Former Bucs, Jets, Chiefs, Cardinals and Rams tight end Anthony Becht, now heard on the Buccaneers Radio Network, is all fired up after Tampa Bay drafted tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins in the second round.

Becht, speaking on WDAE-AM 620 today, said his film study on Seferian-Jenkins revealed a 6-6 tight end with the “biggest upside” in the draft.

“Super long arms, big paws. He really can do the all-around tight end. Red zone target. He really does have [Rob] Gronkowski-type tendencies,” Becht said. “Now he’s got to get coached up a bit. He’s got to get with a good tight ends coach. I think [Jon] Embree’s gonna a good job with him in Tampa.”

Becht said he’s not concerned with the “swirls” off the field surrounding Seferian-Jenkins, likely referring to a DUI arrest the Bucs rookie called “humbling and embarrassing.” Becht also said Seferian-Jenkins has a “great chance to be a spectacular player.”

Well, it’s safe to say the Bucs are absolutely loaded at tight end.

And, as Joe’s written for momths, it might be time to start studying New England’s offense of years past, before Aaron Hernandez went nuts, to get more insight into Jeff Tedford.

Same song and dance every year this time, for every team.

    Call me skeptical.

  2. ESPO IS MY B!#CH Says:

With ASJ and Sims on the field the Bucs can run the ball down your throat or have two extra route runner, and no one will what to prepare for.

  3. Chris Says:

For the first time, teams need to prepare for weapons every where when they play US. However the qb remains the issue.

Studying NE tape is most likely WHILE Hernandez was goin crazy joe

The Bucs and “loaded at tight end” was an oxymoron for so long I had to do a double take on that sentence. Good to see we have a coaching staff that sees the direction the league is going in rather than have a coach fill out his team as to how he grew up playing the game.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Guess what….I think we just significantly helped our run game…..with these added passing weapons….and probably some better play calling….defenses won’t be able to stack against the run. I think we will run…but not as much as in the past….

I love it, our offense is finally going to scare people.

    Gronk= ASJ
    Hernandez= Tim Wright

And with our WR’s and great QB in Glennon, I can see a quick turnaround in Tampa. GO BUCS!

    Not a message board. Thanks.–Joe

I wouldn’t call ASJ the next Gronk just yet, nor would I compare Wright to Hernandez (very different styles of play).

However, I do think ASJ and mike Evans will help tremendously in the run game as blockers, and b/c they are obvious receiving threats it wil be hard for teams to stack the box. Play action is gonna be fun this year! Go Bucs!

Same song and dance every year this time, for every pessimist.

Call me optimistic. And call me a fan.

  11. Eric Says:

    Jimmy Giles 2.0

TBF, 8 in the box is gone with all the large, physical targets we now have in ASJ, Evans and VJax.
Teams are going to be blitzing the hell out of us though. They can’t effectively jam us at the line and just let these guys downfield. Pressure is the key.

  13. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

If he has a range between Gronkowski and Graham, I will be very happy.

It is really hard for me to get excited this year as well. It’s not that I don’t like most of the drafted players…I do, I really do. It’s just that after years of emotional ups and downs it is extremely hard to let myself get excited before anything is proven on the field.

And I don’t think that is wrong. Perhaps the reasons for the emotional ups and downs are because I have not waited for players to earn props in the past.

I see a lot of people talking like I have this time of year (in years past) and you know what I see? A lot of people becoming upset later because their expectations for individual players are too high.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m feeling good about the overall direction of the team, except for one position.

You know…the position that has a career backup replacing the supposed “future”.

I wouldn’t go as far as to say the Bucs are LOADED at TE…the only two I am comfortable with are Tim Wright (had a great rookie campaign but needs to avoid the sophomore slump) and ASJ, who hasn’t even stepped on the field yet! Luke Stocker isn’t going to amount to anything on the team, his career has been derailed with injuries and inconsistent play, I mean jesus his career high for rec yards in a season was 165 lol…Crabtree is a great run blocker, but that doesn’t produce enough to say the TE corp is “loaded”…That’s a pretty big claim

  15. Milenko Says:

Come on guys, stating same old song and dance is way off kelter. New coaching ( a .500 coach Lovir)(Frazier ex-HC defense guy) which is was better then shciano. All of our starting offense and some defense is new. Nothing like last year. #Reaching

  16. MR.T Says:

You left out Myers a very capable pass catching TE, much better than Stocker or Crabtree in that dept. So yes, we are looking very good at TE

You know some of you guys amaze me with your myopia. I’ve been following this team for 38 yrs. and have been to Over 170 home games!
Does this make me a Bucs football expert?? No. It does however mean that I give a dam about this team and may know a thing or three about us. We are looking better than Ive seen in a Long time before we have even started Training Camp. Im stoked. Joe is hurt. Some of you are skeptical. And some are hating due to bad eyesight.
This new order that includes no. 1 and 2 WRs that are both 6’5″ in a Two TE set where both TEs are over 6’6″ with a 6’7″ QB throwing to them……………..LOLOL
    Stop THAT in 2015
