The Slander Of Johnny Football

Bill Polian reveals his personal tie to Johnny’s intense work ethic

It just blows Joe’s mind how people concoct and invent pure fiction to disgrace someone they don’t like, for reasons Joe cannot understand. Take Johnny Football for example. One of the greatest quarterbacks to ever lace up a pair of cleats in college football, Johnny Football has become some sort of gridiron Lucifer the way so many Bucs fans despise the guy.

Joe can only guess these same types are just jealous because they couldn’t pull in college like Johnny. There is no other logical reason for the fear and loathing of Johnny Football.

He has a pasta arm, they say. He will get hurt! He runs too much. He’s too small (though he’s bigger than Drew Brees). And those are the nice things they say about Johnny Football.

All rubbish, pure and simple!

Don’t take Joe’s word for it. Take someone’s word who actually knows the guy, has watched him practice, has intimate knowledge of him. And, oh, yeah, the same fellow is also one of the greatest talent evaluators the NFL has ever seen. That would be former NFL general manager Bill Polian. Speaking with Booger McFarland earlier this week on WHFS-FM 98.7, Polian talked all sorts of football subjects when the topic of Johnny Football came up. There are few if any football analysts who know Johnny Football as well as Polian.

Why?

Polian’s son, Brian Polian, was the tight ends coach at Texas A&M when Johnny Football was a redshirt freshman, the same season Johnny Football won the Heisman Trophy. Not only has Polian watched Johnny Football practice many times, few outside of College Station know the intimate details of Johnny Football better than Polian. He explained that most of the fertilizer shoveled about Johnny Football is the same kind that can be found in a common horse stall.

“My son Brian who is now the head coach at Nevada was on [Texas] A&M’s staff when Johnny first played there. So I saw a lot of him because I spent time with them both in camp and during the season. Johnny — Tony Dungy said it best, he’s a unique talent — Johnny has all the arm strength you want. He has all the athleticism you want. He is a fierce competitor. He is a gym rat, despite what people may say. You know, things he has done in the offseason? During the season he is totally devoted to football,” Polian said.

“He has a unique ability to play the game. Now I’m going to go back to ancient times but he is most like, in style, Fran Tarkenton, who played in the 1960s and Doug Flutie, who played in the 1980s. Exactly the same style. He is improvisational. Two things happen with that: He gives defenses fits because of that. And secondly, you can get hurt because you are running around and you get caught by defensive players in the NFL at awkward angles. So that is the worry with Johnny. As Tony said, you are best to adapt your offense to the style of play that he is best suited to handle. If that is the case, I don’t doubt he will do well.

“He is certainly a winner. He is a great competitor and he can make all the throws. I’ve heard some curbside analysts say he has a weak arm. That is not true at all.”

Can you imagine? A 20-year old who happens to be the BMOC in a big-time college town likes to have a few beers and enjoy the fruits of the young lasses who populate the campus. In the offseason, no less! Why, society is going to hell as we know it!

As if Joe wasn’t already a fan of Johnny Football, Polian’s words are good enough for Joe. And yes, Joe knows what Merril Hoge said about Johnny Football. Joe is going to put more faith intone of the better talent evaluators over a washed up fullback who likes to scream outlandish things from the mountain top.

So the next time your hatred of Johnny Football has you so rattled you can’t get the corn flakes in your mouth from the spoon shaking so much, relax. Your fears are irrational.

Embrace Johnny Football! As Franklin Roosevelt once said, there is nothing to fear, but “fear itself.”

In other news, Bortles had a good pro day……

  2. BFFL Says:

Is the guy really that skinny or is that just a bad picture?

There is no question that he was terrific on the college level, but the dude needs to get more muscle to play in the NFL. Hell, even Glennon with his lanky 6′-7″ frame looks more physically imposing.

Heard the same thing (from a lot of NFL folks) about Bridgewater.

  4. Lutz Bucz Fan Says:

I wonder if Glennon will come in a little heavier this year?

  5. The_Buc_Realist Says:

It would be nice if he could read a defense and get to a second progression in his reads. starting to get the feeling that Manziel could drop out of the top 10.

  6. Shawnbucfan Says:

I wonder what he looks like in our new uniform?

  7. WalkdaPlank Says:

Bigger than Brees? About the same actually, though Johnny runs more. Is it such a crime to question his college game translating to the NFL? Anyway, I think the reason you get so much negative feedback from Johnny Boy is people are tired of the Johnny lush on a Bucs site. As always, Joe writes what he finds interesting, and that’s fine. Just that not everyone finds it interesting as well. Have a good day, Joe.

  8. lightningbuc Says:

Then by the same token, Joe, I guess your deep-seated dislike of Glennon as Bucs QB must be rooted in your jealousy of not being able to pull in college like Glennon, whose girlfriend makes Johnny’s look like Rosanne Barr.

Joe likes Mike Glennon and thinks he’s a quality backup quarterback who should have a long career. Joe has never written anything otherwise. –Joe

  9. BoJim Says:

I will embrace him if he falls to us. If he does, we’d be stupid not to take him. And I’m a big Glennon supporter.

  10. Jeffobrien Says:

Enough with the Johnny football articles. I come to this sight multiple times a day and I am get sick of hearing about your man crush. Let’s hear about some other potential draft picks. Oh I forgot you will not speak of Sammy Watkins again. Maybe you can talk about the local kid from Ucf.

  11. d-money Says:

    Joe,

Your site is becoming a joke. Everyone i talk to that reads your website has started to not take you seriously because all you ever do is beat this Johnny Football drum.

Dude, Joe doesn’t have a complaint department. If Joe was interested in complaints, he’d solicit site feedback. Joe’s not about to stop writing about what he finds interesting to appease anyone. Joe writes plenty about all things Bucs-related. If Joe wants to write about Johnny Football five times a week, then Joe will do so.–Joe
Your love affair with this guy is comical. Yes he is good, Yes if the Bucs pick him it would probably be a good pick.

What are you going to do when they don’t pick him? And you’ve spent the past 5 months soley focused on him and your readers have had to go elswhere to find out anything about the other guys the bucs might pick?

Joe has written about many other college players. To suggest anything else is ludicrous.–Joe
You’re putting all of your eggs in this basket and i’d say there is probably a less than 10 percent chance that they pick this guy.

I used to come here for all of the most up to date and informative Bucs news. Now every day I know when I come here i know one of two things will be the first story I see, either a story telling us why you love Johnny Football and why we’re stupid if we don’t or why you thiink Glennon sucks.

  12. Joe Says:

Let’s hear about some other potential draft picks

You will once the April minicamp is finished. Joe’s got a lot of draft stuff he’s holding on to in order to blow out in late April and early May.

  13. Joe Says:

What are you going to do when they don’t pick him?

    Drink beer.

  14. Joe Says:

Oh I forgot you will not speak of Sammy Watkins again.

    On Twitter.

  15. Meh Says:

I’m going to drink beer if we don’t take him, and drink whiskey if we do.

  16. bucrightoff Says:

Joe’s post once Manziel isn’t a Buc is going to be incredibly sad, I’m sure it might bring some of us to tears. Losing a lover is never easy. Remember Joe we’ll all be here to console you, internet hugs for all.

  17. mpmalloy Says:

Wow. The JF obsession far worse than we ever imagined.

  18. passthebuc Says:

Not hatred, just do not believe he will make it at the next level. or at least not as an impact player. He reminds me of the hype around Ohio States Troy Smith.
Sorry Joe, only the best get to be Starkist Tuna.

  19. StAugBuc Says:

Thank God not another article about Sammy Watkins.

  20. That Guy Says:

The Joes getting shocked at someone being slandered in public? Now that’s some richly ironic stuff right there!

Joe’s never been formerly accused of slander, nor has Joe slandered anyone. Don’t think you know the definition. –Joe

  21. RCH Says:

Bortles is the best QB in the draft. I don’t know why he is never mentioned here. He has beaten Bridgewater in every phase of the game during the season and during their path to the draft. Johnny Football is a high risk high reward kinda of pick. I think Bortles will be the best out of the three and the mental toughness Bortles has you can’t coach. And that’s not from jumping on the media bandwagon I have watched every single UCf game last season in full.

  22. Larry Says:

    Joe,

Keep it up sir. I love all the Johnny Football talk. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he falls to pick 7 for us as well.

This team (and city) need a spark. Somebody to put us on the national stage. Somebody to get us on MNF. Somebody that other FA’s want to play with.

It’s quite possible that JF is a flop, but it’s also possible that he becomes a superstar too. The Bucs have missed that superstar since Sapp left.

Let’s take a chance and get this kid. No more taking the safe pick and being irrelevant. Let’s make some noise and turn this pirate ship in the right direction!

  23. StAugBuc Says:

    Tuesday, Joe said this:
“And, yes, Polian trotted out the analogy that is really beginning to annoy Joe: the tripe about how you don’t need an offense to win the Super Bowl.”

Today, the tripe trotter Polian should be trusted with his JFF analysis.

    Sigh.

  24. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

Anyone else hearing Sonny and Cher, “I Got You Babe”? I think I’m living in a Groundhog’s Day loop.

I have read Joe, maybe once or twice (maybe it’s a single Joe of however many there are?), acknowledge the legitimate questions about Manziel’s style and stature transferring to the professional level. That’s where I am at, and have been from the beginning.

But, I guess it’s easier(?) to go the jealousy route than the truly analytical one. Who knows.

  25. gianluca pesole Says:

    Johnny bust in waiting Manziel

  26. J 2.0 Says:

    WOW!

    Are you serious Joes?

This is the funniest, saddest, and most blatantly man-love themed article I have ever read.

Very weird dynamic to the Joes’ (middle aged men) infatuation (hero worship) of John Manziel (20 year old man.)

  27. Kalind Says:

All this [stuff] is ridiculous guys. J.Football is ok. His off field stunts are irrelevant to the discussion, so leave them out. It’s not like the guy is Mike Williams, Kenny Britt, or Pacman Jones. So just stop with that.
As for his ABILITY TO PLAY QUARTERBACK (you know, the reason we’d take him or not) I think he’s just ok. I’m not sure how he’d do in Tedfords new offense, and I’m not sure he has the same D breakdown ability as Brady, Rodgers or Manning, or will ever, but he is a good QB. The best in this class I believe. So if we’re foolish enough to take him at 7, just shut up and accept it. He’ll be our guy. If you liked Freeman you sure as he’ll better like this guy.

  28. Mike Says:

Lol! Don’t like him cause they couldn’t pull like him in college. Joe, that may just very well be the dumbest thing you ever said! I have personally have nothing against JF, but the thing that worries me about him is that “lets run around and toss the ball up and hope my WR catches it”. He could very well hold the record for most int’s in the NFL. Dude’s play as a whole just doesn’t look right to me. Oh and didn’t people say the same thing about Tebow? How’d that work out?

  29. ToesOntheLine! Says:

  31. Melnick Says:

Have been coming to joebucsfan.com for many many years and I can’t remember a topic Joe has been more annoying about then Johnny Football. The draft can’t come soon enough how many more days of these whining “I want Johnny” posts. Appreciate everything else posted but goodness give it up.

  32. That Guy Says:

Love your subtle backhanded compliments Joe. I am sure the pitchfork grabbing Glennon mob is ecstatic at comments like these on a daily basis 😀

Not a darn thing was backhanded or subtle. Glennon is a good backup QB. That’s an accomplishment for a third-round pick out of NC State who was thrust into a complex offense. –Joe

  35. Dick2111 Says:

Johnny Manziel – Drew Brees isn’t a valid comparison IMHO. Although they may be roughly the same size, Drew Brees has lasted so long in the NFL because he does very little rushing. Moves around in the pocket extremely well, but has very few rushing attempts in his career. Also, he came to the Saints in 2006 – same year Sean Payton took over as head coach. Look at Drew’s career stats, and his career really took off in 2006. Coincidence? Hardly. The Saints built a great OL to protect him (he’s missed 1 game since 2006) and surrounded him with some outstanding offensive weapons. Throw in a coach who understands offense better than most, and the combination’s worked quite well since then. If you want to compare Manziel with Fran Tarkenton, fine, BUT I’d imagine that the NFL has changed a bit in the last 50 years (bigger, faster, smarter defenses, etc). I’d much rather see the Bucs use their #7 pick on Sammy Watkins, or the top remaining defensive or offensive lineman.

  36. Keith Says:

Joe, I love how you handle your critics.

It’s amazing how much hate is out there.

I scroll down your home page and I see all kinds of stuff that has nothing to do with Johnny Football. smh

  37. Architek Says:

    Joe (s),
I keep repeating this – your bias for a college player is not ideal. It’s one thing to observe and report but it’s totally different to angle or report from one view (remember your defense of Williams?) you all are doing the same.

That’s no different than the accusers of your man-crush collegiate player. Just have your beer ready in May.

Defense of Williams? If you’re referring to Mike Williams, Joe stands behind everything he’s written. –Joe

  38. Snook Says:

    DRAFT JOHNNY!!!!!!

  39. The 300's Says:

So we talk of Lovie not being happy with Mike Williams for his partying ways making the news. Yet you really think we would draft Johnny Manziel? Too much manlove Joe is affecting your judgement. Your comments on your article clearly show you are taking your love too far while you basically tell us this is my site and I will do whatever I want (and we can stop visiting your site which you indicated just broke records thanks to us).

We are not going to draft a quarterback with the 7th pick, especially Manziel. If anything I see us trading that pick and moving down to pick up more picks in the later rounds.

Oh and Sammy Watkins, Sammy Watkins, Sammy Watkins, Sammy Watkins……..

  40. David Williams Says:

    Joe:

I like Johnny Football as well and think he would shake up the NFC South like no one else. He might even take us to the Super Bowl.

  41. Snook Says:

    Joe:

You’re exactly right on why people hate Johnny.

And thanks for posting the highlights video. But I could only watch a couple of minutes of it before turning it off.

I fear he’ll be taken before we draft and therefore can’t watch anymore knowing he’ll go to some trash franchise like Oakland or Cleveland or Jacksonville.

  42. Joe Says:

The kid can play football. Big time. The only questions are his style of play, maturity and durability to play in the big league.
Let’s not forget that you don’t have to mortgage the farm, (yup, read RG111) to take a chance in the first round anymore.
So be it if we take JF or any QB in the first. Nobody really knows how any of these guys will do.

  47. Westsidebucsfan Says:

I’ve heard from sources that JF has already gotten a restraining order against joe just in case the bucs draft him.

  49. Joe Says:

You don’t think it is the least bit ironic that Polian preaches you can win with defense yet he built his teams around quarterbacks first, and that much of his success came because he (adroitly) drafted two of the best quarterbacks that ever played the game (Jim Kelly and Peyton Manning)?

  50. Joe Says:

Way cant we have a little excitement at the QB position?

Wasn’t advocating for or against any of Polian’s views. You’re pointing out his lack of credibility in what he says and does, which was kind of my point

  53. Maze Says:

I’m down with Johnny if he slides to 7. With the rumor of this draft being so deep, trading down this year seems like a desirable target. Clowny and Sammy would be at the top of my draft board. What’s even better is no Josh Freeman to lurk the halls of One Buc Place

  54. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

How many super bowl wins did Tark and Flute have between them?

  55. David Williams Says:

    Joe:

To continue, as far as the logic, about him being a winner, winning the Heisman, and more, can’t we say the same thing about Tim Tebow? He is bigger than Johnny, likes to run, won’t get hurt as easily, likes to improvise, and had detractors also. Maybe the Bucs should get Tim. He has NFL experience, almost took Denver to the Super Bowl. Manning was better but they still lost. Maybe the BIG GUY could have moved the ball when Peyton was stuffed. Just food for thought here. The Bucs may be fortunate enough to take him but Brett Smith runs just as good, has a rocket arm, is a winner – see the game against Nebrasks – and I hear the Bucs like him. Only problem he had is not the same level of team around him as Johnny. We should trust the judgement of our new leaders. I saw where Tampa Bay was the only team that rated an “A” in Free Agency so far. Maybe the same wisdom that helped them pick winners there will also prevail in the draft. It is best not to hope too strongly for something and then be disappointed later when it does not happen. We need to keep a positive outlook. Actually I think that Derek Carr has the best chance, he already knows the Tedford Play Book and has been coached on his feet and arm, etc. by him so he is probably two to three years ahead of any other prospect in terms of coming here and grasping things and being able to play on the first day (even though Josh is named starter) because he is ahead of every QB on our roster right now.

    No.

Johnny Football is a far, far better passer than Tebow. The fact Tebow is out of football demonstrates that. Tommie Frazier was every bit the winner Tebow was in college. He didn’t have a prayer in the NFL because he couldn’t throw.

And you have every right to do so. Don’t think of it as a complaint more of feedback. Just know that the people that I talk to about your site, people I might add that I orginally turned on to your site, think you’re losing it.

You can write about Johnny Football uintil the cows come home for all I care.

But if you don’t care about what your readers want to hear about eventually people will start to go elsewhere to get their Bucs news.

In softer tones, d-money, Joe can’t blow with the winds of what readers like and don’t like, because Joe always hears 10 positives and 10 negatives, for example, on everything written here. Joe knows he absolutely can not please the masses. So rather than try to do that, Joe simply writes about what Joe finds interesting as a devoted Bucs fan. It’s a simple formula Joe doesn’t deviate from. Joe stands behind his archives here, which reveal a diversity of coverage that would be impossible to find anywhere else. Joe thanks you for your patronage. –Joe

Hoge went overboard on Tebow but he wasn’t completely off the rails.

  64. SAMCRO Says:

I still say the best QB with the most upside, and value, and will be a steal, is Jimmy Garoppolo. Whatever QB “needy” team selects JimmyG in the second round along with a top 10 pick (non QB) in the first round will be the winners of this draft from the way I see it. Unless of course if JimmyG, the (Tom Bradee clone) is selected in the first round. …but if not then..

Houston gets the first shot with 1st pick second round.

I’m hoping we get that miracle and select, Sammy Watkins, and then Jimmy Garoppolo

a 2fer one that could put us in great position going forward.

Then the icing on the cake would be to have Garoppolo and Glennon unseat McCown during camp.

..but alas, it’s not my decision …J.M.O.

  65. StAugBuc Says:

    Just kidding
    🙂

  66. Buc87 Says:

What about Bortles Joe? His pro day was yesterday and he’s been getting all the praise. He’s a Florids resident, hot girlfriend who would be in Tampa all the time but most importantly he’s both athletic and can throw. To me he seems the perfect combo of risky pick and safe pick if you know what I mean.

I wouldn’t lose any sleep if we draft Johnny as it will be exciting to see but my preferences would be: Bortles then Carr then Johnny then Murray. Definitely no to Teddy.

  67. mpmalloy Says:

God forbid if Joe ever meets Manziel face-to-face.
    He might pee himself.

The interview would be like Chris Farley interviewing Paul McCartney on SNL.

  68. Joe Says:

God forbid if Joe ever meets Manziel face-to-face.

Already happened at the NFL Combine recently. Joe, as usual (in a workplace environment) was professional. Sorry to ruin your hopes. 🙂

  69. bucrightoff Says:

Joe, when you say Manziel is a much, much better passer than Tebow, you are aware Tebow threw at a 67% completion in college, only 2% behind the “much, much” better Manziel?

These guys always look better in college because there are still many games played in a season with huge talent gaps between teams. Doesn’t happen in the NFL.

  70. BucsQcCity Says:

    Joe,

How about the theory that it’s guys like Evans that did make JF looks insanely good? I watched some of its highlight and there is a lot of broken down plays that finish as 50/50 jumpball between the db and the wr. Evans is a stud and you should at least acknowledge that part of the stats is due to the quality of its WR.

I’m not against drafting him, just against trading up for him.

  71. Joe Says:

    What about Bortles Joe?

    Impressive girlfriend.

  72. Joe Says:

Evans is a stud and you should at least acknowledge that part of the stats is due to the quality of its WR.

Yet the flip side would be that Johnny Football threw the ball knowing Evans could go get it. In some NFL circles, that’s an attribute.

  73. The_Buc_Realist Says:

“IF” the bucs drafted Manziel instead of passing on him. The brightside is that you could fire the OC and save money, because Manziel does not run designed plays.

  74. tha truth is... Says:

Bridgewater, Donald or trade down. Whoever picks Johnny and takes that risk either got jackpot……or rock bottom. He’s 2 much of a risk unless he improves his play from tha pocket and progressions, otherwise HELL NO!

  75. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

    “Impressive girlfriend.”

I guess I missed all of his jealous haters. It appears they save it for one guy, right?

Unless it’s some podunk school with a bunch of cornfed heffer females, the starting QB SHOULD be pulling serious tail or a hot model type GF. This is the norm, not the exception. I went to FSU where hotties grow on the trees, it’s not a huge deal. And, unless you were some total nerd in college, who is now living through Manziel, I don’t quite understand this logic.

The jealousy angle just seems lazy, or a way to avoid discussing the flaws that could appear with a transition to a professional game. I guess it’s easier to say people are jealous.

  76. Harry Says:

People are weird. Very very few on here are know so little of what it takes to successfully transition into the NFL, including myself, at any position.Yet some are adamant in there hatred for Manziel. And I don’t think its about his partying style, or anything else. It reminds me of the hatred Tebow gets. Its not a religious thing or a ‘right vs left.

Bottom line is, ppl are simply jealous. They are unhappy in their own situations so they feel the need to tear down others simply bc its their only way to elevate themselves. Its disgusting.

I saw some of the same type of comments about Donald Penn. If some of you were introduced to a new employee who does the same job you do, then after being introduced you are fired, you would be screaming all the way out the door. Have a little empathy ppl.

  77. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I’m not against drafting him, but I don’t think it will happen. The offense being built does not seem condusive to his style in Tampa.

  78. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Truth is an absolute defense to slander!!!

  79. Joe Says:

And, unless you were some total nerd in college, who is now living through Manziel, I don’t quite understand this logic.

LOL Lotta veiled, pent-up hate there. 🙂

  80. Harry Says:

    @ODB:
“…I guess it’s easier to say people are jealous….”

Funny we posted back to back on the same topic. I respect your opinion bc it is usually football related. So that is fine. But some ppl just want to hate. I am sure you see that yourself. They don’t have to know the person or even have met him. And, no, its not being zeroed in on one guy. I think it takes a certain polarizing figure such as Manziel or Tebow. Someone like Bortles or Bridgewater kind of stay in the background and don’t draw attention. Can you offer a better explanation of the hatred ppl have for Tebow? He is a nice kid. I have NEVER read anything bad about him, but ppl HATE him. Why? I think simple human jealousy.

  81. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

    @harry

So……GMs, so desperate for success that they sign literal killers, are jealous of Tebow? Are you saying he is out of the league for any other reason than his aptitude to play QB?

Isn’t it possible that both, Tebows and Manziels styles don’t translate to a different league? And, that, maybe, people like me think that? I think his lack of going through his reads before “creating plays”, and his physical traits will not transfer.

If you want to say jealousy, hell, I’m jealous of ALLLLL football players, besides that whole CTE thing. You play a game for millions then, if you are smart, retire for life, fame, girls……But, yeah, it’s just Manziel and Tebow. LOL.

  82. Joe Says:

Unless it’s some podunk school with a bunch of cornfed heffer females, the starting QB SHOULD be pulling serious tail or a hot model type GF.

You mean like that dopey Jeff Driskel?

  83. lightningbuc Says:

    Harry,

You always say Glennon doesn’t have what it takes to be a starter in the NFL, despite having only played 13 games. Is that, too, then rooted in jealousy? OR, could it be you just don’t think he’s that good, kind of like some of us think about Manziel?

  84. Bob Digital Says:

Jeez. To all the babies whining about Joe typing another Johnny Football article, just stop already. If you don’t wanna about the kid, don’t click the [read more] link. If you wanna read about Bortles, then google him. Somebody somewhere is typing something about him, the internet is vast.

Anyway if Johnny is there at pick #7, I’d take him.

  85. Pierce Says:

If you have Johnny then you can forget about structure.

  86. BoJim Says:

Jeez guys. Joe posts an article on JF and you all come back with the same crap. It’s his site.

  87. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

Well, the Tebow thing is a loaded question, as a Nole. But, I don’t hate him as a person. I just don’t (as do 32 pro GMs), think he’s a good pro QB. I never have. One of the greatest college QBs ever, same a Tommie Frazier

As far as for Manziel, I think the vitriol is for the endless drum beating by Joe, and the lack of acknowledging the legitimate criticisms, and instead using the lazy “jealousy” angle. It’s just weak to me.

I don’t portend to know more than you, or Joe, or anyone, but, to just act like their no possible holes in Manziels game that won’t be exposed by bigger, faster pro defenders is just sticking your head in the sand.

  88. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

“You mean like that dopey Jeff Driskel?”

    Exactly.

  89. BucNasty Says:

I remember when folks said Josh Freeman had “intense work ethic” too…

  90. Bucsfanman Says:

I don’t know why there’s so much vitriol about Manziel. IF there is a knock, and that’s a big IF, it’s his size. As we have seen with Flutie, Brees, and Wilson, size should not matter.
My opinion is that of the top prospects, including Bridgewater, Manziel is the better option. He played better competition than anyone except McCarron and excelled in doing so.
People don’t like Johnny because he “parties”?! Give me a break! What were those people when they were 20-21? Nuns?!
Bottom line: The kid is a gamer. If he falls to #7 we should draft him.

  91. Nycbuc Says:

Give one reason why Manviel will be anything more than Freeman? Both are tremendously talented, amazing talents, but the discipline to be great? It seems the most successful nfl quarterbacks are football junkies, the pro game is too difficult for talent alone.

  92. zam Says:

You want Doug Flutie part 2? No thanks.

  93. Chris Says:

    Joe Says:
    March 20th, 2014 at 9:20 am
There is no question that he was terrific on the college level, but the dude needs to get more muscle to play in the NFL. Hell, even Glennon with his lanky 6′-7″ frame looks more physically imposing.

Heard the same thing (from a lot of NFL folks) about Bridgewater.

But Teddy wins from the pocket. Rids it quickly. Doesn’t expose himself to hits. Johnny can’t read defenses nor win from pocket. See mizzou and Lsu film joe. Not duke nor Bama. Both teams had speed edge rushers that made him uncomfortable in the pocket and unable to run around. He pulls the ball down and runs when it’s not needed and wrs are open. His play doesn’t translate to the nfl.

  94. BucFan20 Says:

why is he in the old jersey? If he is going to be the future put in ugly new one.

  95. Firethecannons Says:

We need more Sammy Watkins articles

  96. DWE Says:

I would love to have Johnny Manziel as a buc. i am 60 now but i remember all the crazy stuff and fun i had in college and i was almost broke. Hell, I am impressed by the mere fact that found the time for football let alone what he has accomplished. I sure hope he is there at number 7.

  97. Harry Says:

    @Oil Derrick Brooks Says:
“..So……GMs, so desperate for success that they sign literal killers, are jealous of Tebow? Are you saying he is out of the league for any other reason than his aptitude to play QB?…”

Thanks for giving me no credit for any intelligence after I did you give such credit. Ok, ODB, so where in my statement did I reference GMs? Where in my post did I even insinuate Tebow has the ability to play in the NFL? It bugs the heck out of me when ppl put words in my mouth. My whole point is how SOME ppl who post have such hate. If its a football related point, fine. But claiming you can predict who can succeed and who will fail is a joke. IF you cold make such predictions, you would be making millions.

Tebow has been given his chance; he proved he does not have what it takes. I am sorry, but you have no clue who can, or can’t play in the NFL. And that includes Manziel. I don’t claim to have such wisdom. If GMs and coaches, who are paid millions, can’t get it right, I am not stupid enough to say I can make a prediction like that.

  98. Bucsfanman Says:

Name ONE prospect that has zero flaws in this years draft. I’ll wait!
I don’t think that anyone here believes that he is flawless or perfect. However, you cannot deny that he has played far better competition than Teddy or Blake.
Zam- I’ll take Doug Flutie pt. 2 any day. The guy played lights out his entire career(see his CFL resume). Had he not been “looked over” because of his size, I’m sure that he would have been equally successful in the NFL. Once again-GAMER!

  99. Bucsfanman Says:

Nycbuc- We don’t know! But, neither you nor I can speak to who or what Manziel is outside of the gridiron. He could be a “football junkie” for all we know. Unfortunately the only pub this guy gets is his “partying ways”.
The draft is a gamble, plain and simple. Anyone who thinks otherwise has their head in the sand.

  100. Harry Says:

    @lightningbuc Says:
“…You always say Glennon doesn’t have what it takes to be a starter in the NFL, despite having only played 13 games….kind of like some of us think about Manziel?”

I have seen MG8 play NFL games, I have not seen Manziel play NFL games. I have never said Manziel can be a franchise NFL QB, unlike you who “knows” he cannot be. I leave those decisions up to ppl who get paid to make them. I just hope they feel he is and, if so, they find a way to draft him.

Sorry, if my post offended you. It was not directed to everyone, not even all the MGMers. Just ppl in general who make snide remarks, or ignorant ones, and having no real knowledge to back them up.

  101. Left_Coast_Bucs_Fan Says:

No doubt Manziel will be fun to watch, regardless of who drafts him. He is the real deal, but he has to go to a team that is soundly built on the offensive side of the ball and only lacks a QB who can lead them to the promise land. Anything team less than that with holes everywhere (aka Cleveland, Oakland) and he will be chewed up and spit out by NFL defenses.

So the real question is, are the Bucs that soundly built team? I say yes, they are the perfect fit for Johnny Football.

  102. Brandon Says:

I’d much rather take Wyoming’s Brett Smith in round 3 than draft Manziel in round 1.

They both have extremely very similar playing styles.
Smith is faster (4.55) than Manziel (4.68).
Smith is taller (6’2) than Manziel (6′).
They both only spent three years in college so both are very young.
Smith has ZERO questions about his character or work ethic, Manziel has to have both of these defended because there have been numerous reports to the contrary.
You miss on Smith in round 3, you still used your #1 on a position player that can help your team right now. You miss on Manziel at #1, you’re probably out of a job.

  103. Harry Says:

    @Oil Derrick Brooks Says:
“…Isn’t it possible that both, Tebows and Manziels styles don’t translate to a different league?”

Seeing you brought this up, here are some interesting stats. Did you know that in 2 out of 3 years Tebow has an equal to, or better QB rating than Glennon? Further, one of the favorite MG8 stats ppl like to throw out is his low TO ratio to TDs. Tebows ratio is 17 TDs to p TOs. Freaking creepy isn’t it?!! Granted, that is based on almost twice as many games (35), but still interesting.

And btw, sure its possible Manziel’s skill don’t translate to the NFL, but I am not smart enough to know. I hope L&L are. But then, 26 NFL teams passed over Dan Marino. Amazing, that 26 GMs (or more?) who are paid MILLIONS did not get that one right. If nothing else, that proves my point about how difficult it is to predict success for a player coming into the NFL.

  104. Left_Coast_Bucs_Fan Says:

@Brandon I get where you are coming from but give me the choice between hottie Scarlett Johansson or her stunt double and I will take Scarlett every time!

  105. utahbucs4life Says:

Damn people get off Joe’s back. Jonny football is the most exciting offense player in the draft! The bucs would be lucky to have his talents for the next five years.

  106. Orca Says:

Joe can continue to beat the drum. It’s not going to matter, and it’s a bit tired. Realistically, Johnny Fruitball is not as highly regarded among NFL coaches and talent evaluators as he is by the Joes. Again, a recent poll of NFL QB coaches showed that at least 17 of them prefer Derek Carr to JFruityballs.

My guess, if they stay at #7 and want a QB there, is that they’ll be targeting Bortles if he lasts. I still think they wait on a QB and pick up Watkins, one of the OTs, or Mack (if he drops to them) at #7, or they trade down from that spot. Trade down makes the most sense, since (a) Licht has hinted heavily that they have “franchise” QBs they’re eyeing in later rounds, and (b) the draft is deep at WR.

  107. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

    @Harry,

What I wrote must have come off incorrectly. Sorry. I guess, I don’t know the answer to your question.

My point was that I assume what you perceive as “hate” for those two people (not players), I don’t see. I see frustration in a franchise that wasted about 5 years trading up for a first round QB with some obvious holes in his game, and now the desire by some to do the same thing. Ultimately, I think no QBs are worth it this year (no matter how bad anyone needs one). Unfortunately, there are years in the draft when there are no QBs worthy of a really high pick. History has shown that. And only time will tell who’s guesses are correct (yours, mine, Joe’s, etc., they are all guesses). If TB had less holes, wasting a first (especially after last years wasted 1st) might be less risky.

While Manziel is quite exciting when he improvises, which I think is what predicates his popularity, I think that same improvisation is not the commodity to an OC that Joe thinks it is. We disagree on that.

But, hate for Manziel outside of football and how it relates in the NFL? I don’t know. Maybe there are people who don’t like him off the field, but, most of what I have read is about football. In my opinion the jealousy/hatred thing is overblown. I meant no disrespect towards you.

  108. SeanyMac in SC Says:

No, no, no, to Johnny “spoiled rotten” Football. My dislike of JF is from only what I have seen on TV, which what appears to be immaturity. If he cleans that up, which he has stated that he will do, then I will warm up to the JF mob.

Joe, I love your passion even if we don’t agree. I see you took your vitamins this morning in anticipation of reading lots of JF post judging by how many you have responded to.

  109. Vince Says:

Joe I think the Johnny football articles are getting increasingly hilarious–and I don’t mean that in a bad or sarcastic way. Like I’m pretty sure you’re just messing with people at this point and it’s cracking me up.

  110. Harry Says:

Thank you ODB, I appreciate that. We are all good.

  111. FB Says:

As I said this is a glorified message board. With a moderator that isn’t as fair as the Commish. Maybe it is all the time spent with Duemig. This is the only serious Manziel Bashing out there. Which is most likely a direct result of the moderator Joe’s manlove for the Manziel.

That’s funny. What exactly is not “fair?” Joe lets a lot go here, basically everything that doesn’t maliciously attack the host. –Joe

  112. FB Says:

@d-money….. You are on the money with that post!

  113. The_Buc_Realist Says:

Micheal Vick was once the ” most exciting player in the draft.”

  114. phil Says:

The Bucs should do everything they can to get Johnny Football. I think he is the best player in the draft and he is a winner and God knows we need some winners on the roster.

  115. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

Can I ask a peak behind the curtain question? I notice the Joes sometimes post in bold within the readers message, other times as a separate post as “Joe”, and other times as “admin”.

While I know there’s more than one Joe, are these multiple Joe’s that are posting in one thread?, or is this the same person posting in the above posted different fashions? Makes no difference, I just notice it and am curious.

OilDB, don’t waste your time with such nonsense. LOL Joe responds as the mood strikes him.–Joe

  116. Nick H Says:

Bashes Mike Glennon, says he doesnt dislike him.

Bash Johnny Football, WHY DO YOU HATE HIM?!??!

  117. snook Says:

    Joe’s dream threesome:

Him, Johnny Football and Rachel Watson

Question is: Does he have enough hands?

  118. Espo Says:

I listened to the interview. He had some nice things to say about Manziel for sure but he was asked which of the top qbs should the Bucs pick it available. He spoke of Bortles first and then Bridgewater. Absolutely raved about them both. Let’s just ignore that and settle on option number 3.

  119. buccanAy Says:

Your site has become a joke with zero credibility. Unfortunately, you’ve let some success go to your head, and turned a good ‘fan site’ into your “soap box”. I could care less about your opinion, I’m a Buc fan looking for Buc news. The site has become more about you than the Bucs, big mistake.

Please don’t fabricate. Joe stands by the mountain of diverse Bucs content here.–Joe

  120. Espo Says:

Then go get Bucs news elsewhere

  121. RJBucnut Says:

Joe the TRUE GURU of Qb’s JAWS who played the position said he wouldn’t take your boy crush w in first 3 rounds. That speaks volumes. U r the only jack wagon lobbying for the sandlot all star. I can’t wait till he flops so all of us Buc fans w football knowledge can stick your nose in a pile of dog poop!!! I think JAWS knows a little more than u when it comes to Qb’s!!!! If he has a better career than Aaron Murray I will eat crow!!!! Get over him already!!!

  122. RJBucnut Says:

I can c how ur love for JFDouchebag could turn ur own against u. It really does make u look like an idiot!!! He will b out of the league in 5 yrs. come on Joe ur better that that!!! I have been following u for 3 yrs. Your incompetence is starting to show. Mark Dominik is not a Rock Star, Saffold can’t pass a physical and JFDouchebag is not an NFL QB!!! WTF!!!

  123. chipbuc Says:

I guess Tony Dungy and Bill Polian dont know any thing about football or talent. Joe im with you , bring on the excitement of Johnny Football. He will be a dynamic player for years to come ,and we will all be crying why did we pass on him when we had the chance to draft him. Hey everyone its worth the 7th pick, to maybe pick the next great QB. Oh by the way RJBucnut BITE ME !!!!!!!

  124. michael Says:

How can you not watch this and not want JohnnyF or Evans. But PLEASE keep up the bad mouthing of JF!

  125. J 2.0 Says:

Johnny’s ability to pull is no reason to dislike him. Respect is more like it. Guy could easily have 365 different beautiful women a year. Am I jealous? You are G**D*** right I am! But that isn’t the reason I do not want the Bucs to draft him.

Honestly, if they drafted John Q Football I wouldn’t be bummed. I would be cautiously optimistic (which for me is a strong statement, I am like the super fans in ‘Major League’ when it comes to the Bucs and think we will win it all every year regardless of the facts that indicate otherwise.)

I have these concerns about Jonathan Football:

    – I fear his style of play might not translate to the NFL. He is bigger than Brees, but he doesn’t play like Brees. And he is more reckless than Russell Wilson. I like that he would sacrifice his body to benefit the team, but that may be for personal glory, and also could be a fault as this style of play may be dangerous and likely injury/turnover prone in the NFL.

    – I fear he has a bad attitude. He got suspended for the well known reasons (albeit just 2 quarters), but what does he do on his first scoring plays? Acts like a jackass and shows his ass on national television with his celebrations. His HC confronts him on the issue and he turns his back on his HC and ignores him on national television.

    – I don’t like his “party dude” image. I played college baseball on a much smaller Division II level, and I liked to party as much as the next guy. But if I was invited, to say, a Cal Ripken Baseball Camp where Cal Ripken actually showed up and counted on me to be a positive role model… I might not get hammered every night of said event and have to leave an honor of a lifetime and shame myself because “I can’t handle my own celebrity” (his father’s explanation, not mine.)

    – Also, it is likely if Jack Football were drafted and did well (I would be thrilled for the 1st 4 seasons if he panned out) that he would demand the $18-21 million contract “me first” type of contract for a QB that would prevent a team from being a complete team capable of winning a Super Bowl.

    – Matthew Stafford, Mark Sanchez, Josh Freeman, Tim Tebow, Sam Bradford, Christian Ponder, Blaine Gabbert, Jake Locker, Brandon Weedon, EJ Manuel. The past 5 years 1st round QBs that just for some reason or another haven’t panned out yet.

    – Pat White, Jimmy Clausen, Brock Osweiler, Geno Smith. The past 5 years 2nd round QBs that just for some reason or another haven’t panned out.

The Bucs or only 5 years removed from taking a chance on an unproven college QB, who came out of college early, and had a questionable skillset to translate to the NFL, in the 1st round.

I say draft a 1st or 2nd round QB when experts look at your team and say, “That team is just a QB away from winning it all.” Not, “That team needs a QB to build its team around.”

  126. J Bucs Fan Says:

I will be really upset if we pass on Manziel. He is quick, athletic, has a great arm, and has a winner’s attitude. He will demand effort from his teammates. He will be a leader, which I do not see in Glennon. I know this sounds wrong but I think that some people don’t like Manziel because he is a white QB playing like a black QB. Manziel is a better player than RG3 and RG3 went 2.
