Kiper: Johnny At No. 1; Bucs Land Mack

January 15th, 2014

johnny football 1216It’s January, and Joe is no fan of BSPN draft guru Mel Kiper, but he did release his first mock draft of the year based, in part, on what he’s hearing from NFL insiders around the league.

No surprise. Kiper has Johnny Football going No. 1 overall to Houston.

Kiper claims the Bucs, at No. 7, will draft beastly linebacker Khalil Mack out of the University of New York at Buffalo. Oddly, Kiper sees Teddy Bridgewater going next to Minnesota. Imagine the Bucs passing on Bridgewater for a linebacker? Team Glazer would need to immediately drug test its staff.

  1. Al Says:

This is further proof that Mel is visiting Colorado a little too often. Why on earth would we grab a LB, awesome as he may be and pass on Bridgewater?? You can tell this guy doesn’t really understand the actual needs of teams.

  2. Chef Paul Says:

“Imagine the Bucs passing on Bridgewater for a linebacker? Team Glazer would need to immediately drug test its staff.”

Some of these fans would lose their effing minds!! The threats of not watching or buying tickets would come to fruition. One Buc Palace would turn into One Buc Smoldering Rubble

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If Bridgewater is there and if by some wild chance we don’t want him….we should at the very least trade that pick to someone who really does….even Minnesota right behind us…..tell them “You want him, make the trade or he’s ours”

  4. Hawaiian Buc Says:

It’s January. So much can, and will, change by May.

  5. Orca Says:

Finish building the defense with a pass rusher. The D might only be a couple of players away from taking a step into the dominant category, but it has to start with improving the pass rush.

We have a QB that should excel with Tedford’s offense. I keep remembering that Joe Flacco won a SuperBowl in Baltimore with a great defense, and an unspectacular QB like Nick Foles was able to put up sick numbers and wins in Philly.

  6. Harry Says:

    1) Man that girl is hot!

    2) I would be totally blown away if Bridgewater dropped to us. Mel likely will “update” that (gaff) and have Teddy gone before we pick.

    3) I agree with Tbbf, if Teddy is there when we choose, and we don’t want him (HUH???) we should trade down for more picks

  7. Tim Says:

This is typical Kiper, he inflates a players value every year that does not deserve it. Remember how much he loved Geno last year or Sanchez or any number of busts. Kiper’s mocks are worthless I am more accurate at making a mock.

Mack should be our pick, but Bridgewater, Johny Football and Bortles will all be off the board by 7

  8. NewTampaChris Says:

Four of the six teams ahead of the Bucs need a QB. If a top-notch QB falls to #7, it would be the greatest gift since Sapp slipped down to us. Still, I’m not sure anyone beyond Teddy and Manziel will really have a 1st round grade on them.

  9. Tampamac Says:

I’m not sold on Bridgewater or Manziel. I believe Kiper’s thinking is it’s a relatively safe pick, both Watson and Casillas are free agents, and Lovie Smith is a defensive minded former LB himself. Makes sense.

  10. Chef Paul Says:

You used that pic already. I would recognize them cans anywhere.

  11. Lev Says:

Accept it Joe, Glennon’s our qb for atleast one more year

  12. Couch Fan Says:

If Clowney is off the board and we are determined to go defense, I wonder how much they are looking at CJ Mosley to put in the middle and move Foster to Sam.

  13. PRBucFan Says:

The way Tedford was talking today it seems Lovie is going to really have an ear for his suggestions and unless they get some more weapons for Glennon in FA, Watkins could be the pick.

  14. Kalind Says:

I have seen this idiotic pick before on Walterfootball.com made by Pewterreport guy Charlie Campbell, and it just makes no sense. Khalil Mack isn’t a linebacker..not really anyway. He’s a Clay Mathews clone. Now why, oh sage, Mel Kiper, would a coach and DC with a penchant for the Tampa 2, and a four man DLine front, b inclined to draft a rush linebacker with the 7th pick in the draft?

They are not that stupid. No one is. Try again.

  15. Kalind Says:

Also, Joe, can you explain to me the sense of Mack or some other guy at DEnd who at 7 would be a huge reach? Instead of a guy like Louis Nix? The guy is 340! You can not single team him. He will eat the center. So if you double him, you obviously have trouble doubling our boy GMC.

Nix moves the pile back and frees up GMC, better than a middling DEnd would. Not to mention dEnds never pan out their first year. It takes 2-3 years to fully blossom. And frankly there just isn’t one that will be there at 7 worth our pick.

First 5 picks will be (not in order): Bridgewater, Manziel, Clowney, Watkins, Mathews.

If you want pass rush, FA an end, draft Nix.

  16. PRBucFan Says:

I don’t agree, Watkins will be switched out with Bortles IMO

  17. Rob Says:

I like Glennon, but if Bridgewater falls to 7, you draft him. No question about it.

That said, he won’t fall to 7. The Texans, Jaguars, Browns, and Raiders all need QB’s and pick ahead of Tampa. Likewise if he slips to 6, the Bucs will have to look out for some team like Tennessee or Minnesota trading with Atlanta to get him. I’m sure the Falcons would rather trade down a few spots if Clowney is gone than see the Bucs walk away with a franchise QB.

  18. Patrick in VA Says:

Had a thought I’d put out there to jbf nation, what are the chances that manziel’s shtick is something like Floyd Mayweather. Before he was “money” Mayweather he was fairly unassuming and not nearly the caricature that he is now.

If his teammates and coaches talk about what a competitor he is and what a great teammate he is then what if he’s putting on a show to put out an image and increase his marketability kinda like Deion Sanders.

  19. Jktampa Says:

The only thing more ridiculous than the Bucs passing on Bridgewater is the 6 teams in front of us passing on him.

  20. Barry Says:

This organization cannot afford to roll the dice on drafting a QB with their first over pick. Not going to happen, no way.

  21. Bucfan#37 Says:

Kiper having Manziel going to Houston is good, hope they get him. It seemed they trashed their whole season to get the first pick. Texas NFL teams suck.

  22. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Here are the facts….all else is speculation

    Bridgewater
    Manziel
    Bortles
    Matthews
    Carr
    Barr
    Watkins
    Mack

Of thowe 8 players, we will have a choice of 2.

  23. tmaxcon Says:

damn joe I can’t stop checking out the girl with Johnny… How about an interview with her and a Game Day picture for next year. It would almost be as relevant to the bucs as some of the back and fourth that goes on here.

  24. tmaxcon Says:

there is no andrew luck in this draft. take a 2nd round or 3rd round flyer and fix the O-line and D-Line in FA and buy up some Glennon Jersey’s folks. I am not sold on Glennon but he makes the most sense financially and giving the fact he is already on the roster and will have a HUGE head start on Tedford’s system. No has beens or never was wash ups. They will just cut into the development of Glennon and a young-in… If these so called Veteran QB’s were able to take a team to the playoffs they would not be available.

  25. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @tmaxcon

Isn’t that AJ McCarron’s girlfriend? Did Joe cut & paste again?

  26. tmaxcon Says:

Tampabaybucfan… Very Nice Sir!!! Could be…. I thought McCarron’s girl had Puffy hair.

  27. Leon Says:

Glennon fans are as clueless as kiper jesus

  28. Mike J Says:

Not a huge fan of Teddy; when I watched him he was throwing to a lot of receivers turned around & looking at him. But you don’t turn down a potential franchise QB for a LB whom S.D. St. stymied.
    Moot point anyway; never happen.

  29. Mike J Says:

tmaxcon, I agree; taking the Long View, give Glennon a chance w/ more targets, bring in a vet, teach the schemes, & see what happens w/ an eye to the QB’s who will be available in 2015.
Or maybe take Mettenberger rd. 2….

  30. StPeteBucsFan Says:

What are the odds of a first round Q.B. being a bust? A success. Cmon some of you guys need to get a life..you fantasy football guys and other statistics freaks.

Do the research for us and tell us how many first round QB picks were busts and how many turned out to be franchise QB’s. How many were just average?

Let’s see I remember the greatness and can’t miss guys..Ryan Leaf…Brady Quinn…Jamarcus Russell…Matt Leinert…you guys are so freaking desperate to waste a first round pic that I guess you’d be happy with Blaine Gabbert and Christian Ponder!
Tim Tebow #25 pick anybody..you can still get him with very little wear and tear on his frame.

I hope Kiper is correct. I either want a beastly linebacker or Watkins from Clemson. We don’t have a shot at Clowney.

Imagine if Kiper is right. We might end up with the best linebacking corps second only to the Niners.

  31. Buc1987 Says:

Kiper a LB for the Bucs? Whatever!

  33. bucs friend Says:

what if we trade Lavonte David for 2 1st round draft picks? what a good bargain

  34. Kevin Says:

We need to let Tedford choose his guy and go after him. Whether or not it means trading up or down we need this offense running to the best of it’s ability if we want to win right away. If it’s Glennon let it be Glennon but the fate of our team is in the offense and that is being run by Tedford.

  35. DontBucNH8 Says:

If Teddy is there, we take him, but he won’t be. I wouldn’t mind taking Waltkins at 7, then maybe trade into the 3rd rd and pick up a Tajh Boyd

  36. Trubucfan22 Says:

Kipper is the worst of all the “professional mock draft” guys.

  37. Danimal Says:

Trade martin to get Manziel !!!
    Montanna with Mobility.

  38. tmaxcon Says:

Speaking of to many trips to Colorado…. will someone schedule a whiz quiz for danimal. Trade martin a proven 3 tool back for an unproven manziel. Your bong and or crack pipe need cleaning

  39. BucPuck Says:

This is all you need to know about Manziel and his accuracy, this video is nuts.http://youtu.be/n58bFRauLL4.

@Tampabaybucfan – From your list I want Watkins most of all. He would improve our return game and provide an immediate threat on offense.

LOL!!!!!!!!! This one is hilarious. I almost spit my beer.

  41. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Kiper is ALWAYS wrong.

Mayock is the best predictions expert, but even he misses a bit.

  42. Eric Says:

Of course we would trade Martin if we could get Manziel, the shelf life of a running back is short and you can always find one in the later rounds. A QB can be the cornerstone of your franchise for 10+ years. Like the good teams we never beat have.

We’ve got a couple of other good backs on the team.

But no way could be trade up with only Martin.

  43. Buxfan Says:

Johnny “Bluto Blutarsky” Manziel is the next Payton Manning or Tom Brady only shorter, and less talent, and less comittment, more partying. One Buc Place was a circus all season long. Why not add to the circus.

  44. DavidM Says:

Guys do u remember the Dungy drafts? I remember one yr, we had the top D-line and Defense w a mediocre offense. What do we get w our 1st rnd pick… a D-Line man of course.

I will be shocked if we don`t get a D-line man or linebacker w 1st rnd.

  45. PRBucFan Says:

Eric your off your rocker lol.

They value Martin as their franchise RB based on what he has proven he can do in the NFL.

Manziel has yet to prove he can even be a viable backup in the NFL let alone be a franchise QB due to the fact that he has yet to even take an NFL snap.

Yet you want to trade a proven commodity for a unproven commodity?

  46. Jacko101 Says:

Why trade an elite LB for to unproven draft picks?

  47. Buxfan Says:

Johnny “Bluto Blutarsky” Manziel is the next Payton Manning or Tom Brady only shorter, and less talent, and less comittment, more partying. One Buc Place was a circus all season long. Why not add to the circus.

As for Kiper, he is known to pimp players for pay. That is the last guy I want to hear from about the draft. Do anyone remember that he ranked Jimmy Clausen as his top prospect at quarterback years ago. Clausen this, and Clausen that. Dude fell to the 2nd round. That’s why I’ll wait to hear Mike Mayock. I feel the guy will fall in the draft. Too much money to give to a risky player.

  48. Eric Says:

Nobody in NFL draft history has ever already played in the NFL.

I’d make that trade in a heartbeat. QB is miles more important than rb.

Look at Blount running wild. You can find a good one anywhere and they flame out quick. Through the years we’ve had good backs, Wilder Dunn Pittman caddy etc.

What we haven’t had is the elite QB.

  49. PRBucFan Says:

Your also assuming that Lovie/Tedford even have the slightest interest in Manchild.

Or that they believe that he’ll be anything more than an elite college QB.

Lovie won’t gamble his second chance back with a guy whose nothing but a massive question mark coming into the NFL.

If you think Manchild is a Lovie guy your going to be massively depressed along with the Manchild obsessed Joe, whichever one that is lol.

I’ve seen it with my crystal ball 😉

  50. Eric Says:

    They may not be interested.

But you don’t know whether they are or not, anymore than I do.

I just said I’d trade Martin to move up and get him, but that wouldn’t be an option anyhow. Would take more and neither of the top two teams need a running back.

I happen to think the kid will be a star, but only my opinion. Watching him carve up the tide two years in a row was enough for me. Freakish performances and I could care less if he drinks. Saban said the kid almost gave him a heart attack. High praise.

  51. Danimal Says:

You guys are on crack…. Martin has already had the best season he wil ever have. He was aready ineffective this season before he got hurt. Then James came in and ran better. You can get a Doug Martin in the third round any year. Trade him now while people still think he’s special.

  52. PRBucFan Says:

    Bullspit Danimal, that’s funny though.

  53. MTM Says:

The EPSN scribes like Kiper are not worth listening to. His track record sucks. There is a long time until draft day. At least 2-3 players will either fail a drug test or get a DUI before then.

  54. johnny Says:

dont pass on Bridgewater this kid is the next Freeman without the size .

  55. IMiss#40 Says:

STOP LOOKING AT BRIDGEWATER’S STATS!!!! Watch his film, I’ve seen him play he doesn’t anticipate throws, he has a long looping delivery that reminds me of a Leftwich/Teabow hybrid, and it unimpressive. He is NOT a difference maker at QB, he is a great person with a good story, but not an elite NFL level QB. If you can’t get Bortels then the rest of the QB’s don’t merit a top 10 pick {even Bortel is more potential than pure numbers}. Take Watkins, Evans, Mack, or trade down. If you watch games, you get much more value with a day 2/3 pick on Murray. He can read the D, work progressions, anticipate throws, and is a tough kid.

  56. mvermulm Says:

When I see people talk about trading Martin or David for anyone, especially an unproven QB with all sorts of questions, it makes me wonder why I even read the comments section. SMH.

  57. Capt. Tim Says:

Eric- agreed. An Elite QB would make this Franchise a contender for years to come. RBs can be found anywhere. See Rainey if you don’t think so. He was an undrafted rookie, and ended up with stays comparable to Martin.

Also think we trade aging Linemen to “win now” contenders, to add draft picks

  58. Capt. Tim Says:

    “Stats”

  59. Patrick Says:

Trade 2nd rounder to land Manziel. If we don’t get Manziel, just stick with Glennon. Manziel is the only QB I care for in the draft.

  60. Bucsfanman Says:

Mel Kiper’s hair predicted that Tiquan Underwood would go in the 1st round!!!
This is just another example of why nobody listens to this clown any more. Throw it against the wall and see if it sticks!

  61. Buc1987 Says:

Draft Matthews and cut Penn loose. The only QB in college right now that is ready for the NFL lives in Tallahassee.

  62. dave Says:

    Mike J

Then you need to watch Teddy B some more. He can make every throw and is accurate. If he is there, they take him.

I’d rather get Clowney and give Glennon a chance, but Clowney is going to be gone … so is Tedy B.

  63. buchead407 Says:
