No Gatorade Bath Dooms Schiano

November 15th, 2013

Prickly Pete Prisco and Pat Kirwan, the former Bucs scout, Jets defensive coach and Jets personnel man, gang up on Greg Schiano in this Bucs-Falcons preview for CBSSports.com.

Prisco says the Bucs don’t have momentum because they don’t like their head coach. Kirwan offered what he considers evidence.

“Let me back up Pete on the concept of [players] not liking Schiano,” Kirwan added. “They won their first game the other night and he didn’t get a Gatorade bath. That told me all I needed to know. When players don’t pour that Gatorade over the coach on a first win, pretty much you know how they feel about him.”

Kirwan goes on to break down the game and insists the Falcons will throw, throw, throw their way to victory again.

Joe gets the whole Gatorade theory, but Joe can’t put a lot of stock in that. Do players have to like their head coach? If the Bucs crank out a lousy effort that evokes the “Q” word, then Joe will know Bucs players are burying Schiano. Enjoy the video below.

I get their point, but as a fan watching the game I was actually telling my wife “I hope they don’t pour Gatorade on him because it will be cheesy.”.

Celebrating you’re not winless anymore? Eh, not something I would do. Playoff game sure.

  2. flmike, is back... Says:

The two people who dislike Schiano the most…Pete Prisco and Pat Kirwan

  3. Mohak T Says:

Who the hell wants to give and get Gatorade baths after an 0-8 start to the season? I’d identify those players and cut them. Becuz it didn’t take a lot to make them happy despite an 0-8 start. I respect the players for NOT doing it. National media n their rules: moronic, senseless, agenda driven.

  4. joseph mamma Says:

These guys know so much about football, it’s amazing they’re not running one of the NFL teams.

  5. MikeyMacfly Says:

This is a completely ridiculous point of view. Invalid. Stupid. Childish. They won one game! I would of hated it if they celebrated and I’m sure Greg wouldn’t of liked it either.

  6. Justin Says:

Are these guys serious with this nonsense? Is that how these “analysts” break it down? Give me a break.

Pouring Gatorade on a coach after becoming a 1-8 team would make us all that more a joke.

It wasnt his first career win. It wasnt a clinching win. We didnt win the Super Bowl. Save the baths for that.

Plus, Schiano probably made sure the players drink all the Gatorade by the end of the game anyways to stay hydrated.

  7. mike n Says:

The players loved Morris!! Lets bring him back.

  8. BFFL Says:

That has to be the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. I’ve totally lost all respect for those two clowns.

  9. Lev Says:

I think everyone wants this team to quit on Shiano but it won’t ever happen. What screws this team over are the coaches inability to adapt their schemes

  10. bucrightoff Says:

One of the most desperate attempts to slam a guy ever.

  11. D-money Says:

This is the dumbest theory I’ve ever read.

I’m not a Schiano fan but this doesnt mean a thing. Did he ever consider that just maybe the players realize there is nothing to celebrate about being 1-8.

  12. givemeball Says:

If they would have poured Gatorade on him that would tell me they didn’t like him. That would be embarressing!!!! Pete and Pat probably are so stupid they think this is his first season as HC.

  13. tiny tim Says:

Just plain stupid. Joe, please do not print anything else from these clowns!!

  14. ShutTheBucUp Says:

“They won their first game the other night and he didn’t get a Gatorade bath. That told me all I needed to know.”

This is quite possibly the most idiotic thing I’ve ever read

  15. cmurda Says:

Now I have heard just about everything. I mean, seriously you effing dopes. The lack of a gatorade bath after getting your 1st win on the 9th game of the season? That would be ultimate stupidity. I would have been embarrassed if he got the gatorade bath. I’ve heard a lot of legitimate criticism of Schiano and I have dealt some harch criticism his way myself, but file this under moronic non-story idiocy.

  16. Back up kicker Says:

I think we should pour Gatoraid on Schiano every time we score a touchdown. In fact why stop there? The players should dump Gatoraid on each other every time we win. Sh!t, I’m going to bring some to the ATL game and dump it on my buddy. Cause I don’t want him to think I don’t like him. That would suck.

  17. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

That is about the dumbest thing I have ever heard the media claim.

  18. Justin Says:

I just cannot fathom how these bozos get paid for these opinions. Its a sin.

  19. Buc1987 Says:

Why do these 2 clowns have any credibility with statements like this? Idiotic.

Not nearly as bad as “if you like your health insurance you can keep it”. But still just as idiotic.

  20. RCH Says:

Really a Gatorade bath after your first win of the season in November! How about acting professional and like you been there before. If they did that I would’ve been ashamed like that’s what were suppose to settle for.

  21. snook Says:

Did Jacksonville give their coach a Gatorade shower?

    Morons.

  22. Walter Says:

Prisco and Kirwin must really hate Greg Schiano.

  23. SoonerinTampa Says:

    Elementary journalism…at best.

  24. mpmalloy Says:

I take that article as an insult to my intelligence.
…but then what else is new.

    Go Bucs!
    Good luck, Coach Schiano!

  25. Being Ickles Says:

Clowns….where can I get a cush job like they have and talk nonsense smack…..They should be reporting on how much the bucs players hate schiano but for some reason have not quit on him

  26. Chris Says:

Remember prisco said josh freeman would be his #1 free agent on the market if Tampa let him go. I’m holding him to that on twitter.

  27. Touchdown Gus Says:

I don’t like Schiano as our coach as much as the next person but this is ridiculous! Why would the players gatorade bath him, this isn’t his first win as head coach. This wasn’t a special occasion! First win ever, milestone victory, or playoff wins(especially the first one) are times for gatorade baths. This is just dumb and now they are looking at reason(silly reasons) for Schiano to be gone. The guy got his first victory this season give him props and stop with non sense!

  28. Buc Fan South Tampa Says:

Everyone was relieved, not happy, relieved.

  29. Hawk Says:

If you want to know whether Coach Schiano returns next year, just watch to see if the Glazers give him a Gatorade bath after the last game.(heavy sarcasm now being turned off)

  30. Bobby Says:

I’m glad to see everyone else thought this article was as stupid as I did when I read it. I would have been embarrassed if they had given Schiano a gatorade bath after a win in week 9. I wouldn’t be surprised if Schiano told the team he wanted no part in anything like that. Prisco and Kirwan are idiots.

I think the team likes Schiano well enough. He’s taken a lot of heat for doing things he had no part in and handled it with grace. That whole Freeman debacle when everyone swore it was Schiano leaking the info…Schiano just kept his mouth shut and went on coaching. I think the team wishes Schiano were the head coach and they had a new DC and Schiano would be less hands on with the schemes but they certainly don’t play like they don’t like him.

  31. buc4lyfe Says:

a gatorade bath at 1-8 when we have the players to be competing for the playoffs hmmm idiot pat kirwin isnt a schiano hater, he’s a buc hater and has never liked the franchise

it doesnt matter if he gets a gatorade bath or not because players arent gonna be the deciding factor on whether they keep this coach or not. the glazers will look at the roster and say do we have the players to compete (yes). are we spending to the cap with expensive probowl players (yes). his the meter pointing up, is this a win now coaching staff (NO)

doesnt matter what he does and its too bad because i like ernest byner, brian cox and bob bostad and its too bad they are gone if we clean house. great schiano got credit for dumping josh freeman but he’s made way more roster mistakes:
wide reciever was supposed to be our deepest position in the offseason,
the idiots got rid of the number 2 when ogletree won (they were wrong)

Jamon meredith was a big part of our run game last year without davin joseph and carl nicks WHY Is he just now getting a start on oline (wrong for choosing gabe carimi over meredith)

WHAT HAPPENED TO MICHAEL SMITH never dropped a single punt or kick return but couldnt get off the practice squad even though what we had was garbage last year and this year isnt much better

daquan bowers 10 sacks? michael bennett hmmm enough said

idiots paid 1 million a game for darelle revis coming off of knee surgery but wouldnt take a chance on brent grimes coming off acl surgery (MISS)

just like last year losing close games we should have had a better record, once again that applies to 2013. it’s too late to improve, they may not have lost the players but they lost the fanbase by insulting us

get rid of sheridan and maybe i’ll consider supporting schiano

  32. oldfart44 Says:

You know, the players may be playing for each other, rather than Schiano. It has been known to happen. Sometimes you can win despite bad coaching.

  33. Andrew 1 Says:

they did give the Gatorade bath to Schiano because he had already won his first game as a buc last season!!! Gatorade baths are reserved for your first win as a head coach, playoffs, and superbowls. I dont know if the players hate Schiano or not, but this is definatly a reach.

  34. Andrew 1 Says:

    didnt*

  35. Splengo Says:

Save the Gatorade for the Super Bowl victory!
