Greg Schiano says he wants to build on Jeff Demps’ package

Yes, Joe’s blood pressure exploded when track star/returner/running back/receiver Jeff Demps, with the Bucs-Cardinals game tied at 10 at 3:10 left in the fourth quarter, fielded a kickoff nine yards deep in the end zone and opted to bring it out.

It was a dumb decision (terrible coaching and/or player awareness) and, not surprisingly, Demps was dumped at the Bucs’ 10 yard line. Already-rattled rookie QB Mike Glennon took a third-down sack to the Bucs’ 1, and the ensuing, high-pressure/short-on-room punt left the Cardinals on the Bucs’ 38 yard line to win the game.

Joe’s going to have a hard time getting past that kickoff return, but Joe did like what Demps showed in the Bucs’ offense.

Greg Schiano also was giddy about Demps’ future while speaking on Buccaneers Radio Network show Monday on WDAE-AM 620.

“He didn’t do a ton, but he did a little bit, but you really like what you see,” Schiano said. “On that little sweep he gained 14 yards, on that little diagonal right he gains nine yards. And, you know, it’s not where people didn’t have angles on him. He just ran away from them. He’s a gifted, gifted guy. So you find more ways to get him involved, , you know, and you build on his package so he can get the football.”

Demps showed he’s a weapon. Now the challenge sits with the New Schiano Order to figure out a way to use him.

I think he is a weapon… if he commits to football in the off season. the speed/change of pace is a great thing. he just needs to know, don’t run the ball out from 9 yards back in the endzone. That is also coaching.

  2. King Couch Fan Says:

Like I been saying Demps is a game changer if you know how to use him properly. Loved him at UF and so far he’s looking good here.

  3. 1976 Paper Bag Look in 2013 Says:

The coaching is at a all time low here in Tampa! I have seen every coach the Bucs have had. This is bad really bad.

Where can I find the transcript or audio for last Mondays Greg Schiano show?

  5. Elijah Says:

I never watched any UF games so I never got to see what Demps skill set is.
I know he’s played RB and returner, but how is he as a WR or was he ever used at the WR position? If his receiving skills are up to snuff do you think that he could manage the slot?

    F$ck u schiano

I just hope demos is never late and I hope he doesn’t have ADHD … Lol I saw where Justin Gatlin has it .

Demps is a player , for real for real

  8. ttk Says:

Dave Wannstedt is the special teams coach. There you go.

  9. bucrightoff Says:

Yeah but taking that ball out 9 yards deep is something he’ll have to learn to pick his spots. Tied at 10 with less than 4 minutes to go is not one of those spots.

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Demps could be a real steal….we absolutely need some speed on this team…we have another player that we need to get involved and that is Russell Sherman….he can run, catch & throw….would be great for a wildcat or 3rd down back.
I think this offensive crisis will force Sully & Schiano to make some adjustments.

  11. Matthew Says:

I’ll be the first to commend Joe for finally admitting he was a little over-zealous in his poo-poo’ing of Demps being of any value to the Bucs and writing that the kid has potential to be an asset on a team devoid of much depth. For those asking who didn’t watch Demps in college, the Gators used him all over the field, in the slot, in motion, out of the back field, as a PR/KR. His biggest issues were staying healthy (since he’s so small) and obviously trying to return kicks he shouldn’t because he has game changer speed & thinks he can break it every time. I don’t know if he can be a slot WR in the NFL as his hands are just good for a RB, not a WR. BUT he can’t be any worse the Ogletree & if Sully can find some creative ways to get the ball in his hands & give Martin a rest I think he is a solid upgrade to the Buc’s lack of HR hitters. If you’ve never seen Demps just watch this play vs Kentucky where he goes 85 yards untouched down the center of the field out running two DBs who had angles on him. youtube.com/watch?v=bW4X664GRt0

  12. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

I think the kickoff return was nerves or hubris. He’s been playing and watching football for 15 years probably and knows you just don’t do that. Much of our problems could be labeled coaching, but they are also stupid things like the return that players have known not to do the entire time they’ve played and a coach shouldn’t have to tell them not to do that.

  13. abdominal snowman Says:

They will fail to manage this player and succeed in misusing him. I have lost what confidence I had in this
Coaching staff. After watching Talib and Blount ball out for another team it makes me sick that we can’t utilize all of our weapons. I want a winning team with football players, not a bunch of “disciplined” losers.

  14. Matt Says:

So why isn’t he our slot receiver? Why cant we use him a lot like how the Eagles use D. Jackson. He would always be a deep threat and the safety’s would have a hard time cheating forward.

  15. Gt40bear Says:

How refreshing! An honest to God football story! Thank you Joe.

  16. Lev Says:

The bucs have to make a deal with Demps so we can have him week 1

He was used quite a bit in the slot and motioning him out to the slot, his hands aren’t great but definately good enough with an accurate passer to use in the slot. Similiar to what they were trying to do with Martin. Martin just isnt that kind of back in my opinion. Demps fits that package much better. Would love to see him on some screens. Get the guy in open space and you will see what he can do. He isn’t just fast he can make people miss.

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

All he has to do is burn someone once….and he can be used even as a decoy….that is something we don’t now have….even a short easy to catch short pass to Demps could produce major yards after catch.
Here is the link….watch this unbelievable speed!

  19. BirdDoggers Says:

Demps can be a good offensive weapon. He has the speed and moves to make a few plays per game. The coaching staff has to figure out how to get the ball to him in space.

  20. Piratic Says:

The photo caption is one of your recent best, Joe!
