“You Always Have To Have A List Ready”

October 16th, 2013

Longtime Redskins and Texans general manager Charley Casserly spoke today on WDAE-AM 620 about how rockstar general manager Mark Dominik needs to have a list ready of coaches who could replace head coach Greg Schiano — in midseason or after the season.

That’s in the job description, Casserly said, because ownership could start calling at any time to begin the exploration process.

Casserly, thought is no fan of a midseason coaching change, saying it’s fruitless in most cases.

Unless the Bucs have their next head coach locked up long term, Casserly said, or there’s “utter chaos in the locker room or the head coach clearly at that point in time is beaten down or he’s quit or one of those things there, really, you don’t accomplish anything in turning anything around by changing [midseason],”

Casserly’s full interview is below. It’s a very cerebral chat. Enjoy.

I wish Joe would stop calling him Rockstar GM at this point unless it’s pure sarcasm. He’s made so many mistakes at this point.

  2. JonBuc Says:

Glazers’ need a list of GMs to replace the Dirtstar Dominik…..They don’t exactly grow on trees and several retreads are out there…but start making a list nonetheless please.

  3. Harry Says:

I agree; it would serve no purpose to fire Schitzano until after the season. An additional reason not mentioned would be to see if any of the other coaches might make a good head coach; but there is NO ONE on this staff that would merit such consideration.

Beside, I want our draft position for next year improved. I don’t want some bozo coming in and winning games and moving us out of the “Tank it for Teddy” or “Can it for Clowney” sweepstakes.

  6. MadMax Says:

@Harry, try lloking ahead though. We can build our O line and draft or sign a TE, Draft or sign WR, and set up for our drafting of future franchise QB Jameis Winston!!!

Clemson will go down this saturday…..

  7. BirdDoggers Says:

If the Glazers can identify Schiano as the definitive reason for the teams failures, Dominik might have a chance to keep his job. If the Glazers feel the responsibility is on both Dominik and Schiano, both will most certainly go.

Dominik assembled a talented roster. He’s made his mistakes in the draft and free agency, but so does every GM. Overall, he’s done a decent job and he’s a home grown member of the organization, which the Glazers like. The Glazers would probably be using Dominik to assemble a list of coaching candidates, regardless of his future with the team.

However, there are more problems with the Bucs organization than just the on field results. The Glazers might be looking at a complete overhaul in an effort to change the perception of the organization.

  8. bucrightoff Says:

Yeah not too sure what “Rock Star” has a Matt Millen level winning percentage. I mean what nickname do you have for Ozzie Newsome? Rock God?

  9. Adam L. Says:

There needs to a ready list of “GM Candidates.”

  10. Harry Says:

@MadMax – I agree, but my priority is getting a real franchise QB. Of course there are no guarantees, but the higher we draft, the better our chances. I want to watch a Payton Manning type 3, 5, 10 years from now, guiding the Bucs to another Superbowl.

Even if we end up with ‘only’ one S-Bowl with our new QB, like the Colts (Irsay needs to either quit drinking or close his Twitter acct), it is so enjoyable watching a guy like Payton throw the ball – marveling over what amazing passes he throws.

  11. Adam L. Says:

    Dominik is a Rockstar…

…kind of like the same way I am a board-certified heart surgeon.

  12. Tampabaybuctfan Says:

There is no guarantee that Dominick will go down with Schiano….I’m not saying he shouldn’t but we don’t know who pushed to hire Schiano…we no he wasn’t the Bucs 1st, 2nd, or even perhaps 3rd choice. The choice could have been driven by the Glazers in which case Dominick could save himself.

  13. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

    Scott Pioli 23-41
    Dominick 21-47

Schiano has only been here 21 games. If he was a bad hire, then Dominick hired him. And, his track record before he got here was equally bad. And that’s without even getting into Clayton, Derrick Ward, etc.

If you fire people at the end of the season, then clean house. If you want accountability, then make people accountable. Look at what KC has done with a fresh start.

  14. bucfanjeff Says:

You can assess the rest of the coaching staff under him to see if they’re being held back in their ideas. In our case, we have Butch and Dave both with prior HC backgrounds that already know the personnel and how to handle a smooth transition. Using them also would make for an easier transition with the players comfort level.

Schiano should have been fired after Philly, but if he doesn’t win BOTH Falcons and Panthers there will be a revolt if he’s still here.

  15. Adam L. Says:

I agree ODb…I look at KC and I have hope.

  16. bucforce Says:

Starting a new one, “Mutiny for Mariotta”

  17. Bucsfanman Says:

    How about mediocre for McCarron!
You started it again Harry! I hate it! I want to watch WINNING football…I know I need to lower expectations though!
I agree with Bucfanjeff, we have a couple of coaches that have NFL resumes if this thing goes south.
We do need to start looking at GM though. Just like a HC, you’re judged by W’s. Is there anything else that needs to be said about that?! If you fire Schiano you HAVE to fire Dominik.

  18. Chef Paul Says:

We don’t need to lose every single game to get a good QB in the draft. They said on BSPN radio there are 9 qb’s with first round grade in college right now. So a team could probably get a good QB even in the second round. History tells us there is no way in hell all 9 QB’s will be good in the NFL though. So even if we have the number 1 pick, that doesn’t guarantee we will get a great one. And the Bucs history tells us we will probably get the one that is a bust….again. So the moral of the story is, FIRE SCHIANO right now, and start winning some god damn games. Get that list out now Dom or team Glazer or whoever, laminate it and put it on Schiano’s bulletin board, so he sees it. It’s not like we will be drafting outside the top 10 anyways, no matter what happens

  19. SHO-NUFF!!! Says:

Geno…it’s a dinner thing…he and the dawg have painted themselves in a corner playing buddy instead of being “journalists”….get used to it or go to a site that is beyond high school

  20. MTM Says:

A list ? How about a rock and a group of potential GM’s. You would be just as successful. Don’t start with the “but he’s is good with salary cap” crap. If your claim to fame as a GM is your ability to work the cap, you su su suck in the words of Ted Knight! Neither Schiano or Skid Mark will be employed after this season.

  21. ShutTheBucUp Says:

Not sure who would want the job, even if served up on a gold platter. The organizations a mess from top to bottom, with no clear end in sight. You’re not going to land any top coaching talent when you have MRSA in the locker room and the NFLPA breathing down your neck.

  22. SteveK Says:

What up and coming, or retread, coaching candidate would want to work with Dominick?

No offense, but the Rock Star is down right offensive.

6 years, 47 losses, and 10 of the 21 wins came three seasons ago.

3 consecutive seasons with a 5+ game losing streak.

I’d rather take Matt Millen. At least he was a good player.

  23. Buccaneer79 Says:

Yeah, there’s no way Dominik gets a pass. The cupboard isn’t bare but depth is an issue all over the place on this team. Yet, with better coaching this team still changes. I posted earlier that this season was lost on Sept. 25 when they benched Freeman (they had no intention of going back to Freeman, who gave them the ammunition to do it, but they weren’t thinking clearly when the best option at QB is a rookie), but remember, Schiano did clearly say that both Dominik, although I’m sure it killed him to do it, & the owners, who really get a pass, were on board with that decision. Dominik drafted Freeman & hired Schiano; no matter how you slice it, if the team wins less than 5 games, both GM & Coach should get fired. The talent level, the expectations are too great for this team to incur 10+ losses. Hire a GM with a proven & impressive track record, who hires a coach who is known in the NFL, also with a good track record. Previous experience at those positions is vital. A lot of pieces are in place at key positions (McCoy, David, Revis, Goldson, Barron, Jackson, Williams, Martin & a few others); building around them should be a welcome challenge for a GM & coach who understand their strengths & use them wisely.
