Schiano: Bucs Won’t Come “Storming Back”

October 29th, 2013

It saddens Joe to type up example after example of what Joe will call the New Schiano Reality.

Head coach Greg Schiano seems to have lost all kinds of perspective of his team’s performance, what they must do to perform, and what they can do.

The latest example comes from the Buccaneers Radio Network last night on WDAE-AM 620. Schiano was pressed to explain why his team is outplayed brutally in the second half of games. The coach’s attitude was troubling.

Bucs Fan caller: … In the second half, I don’t know if we’re getting outcoached or outplayed, or just we don’t have the conditioning. It seems like we’re sticking close in the first half and then we’re not having a strong second half. My question, pointedly, would be how we’re going to correct that moving forward?

Greg Schiano: The second half, as far as adjustments go, you know, I look back at this last game. We come out and I think we’re doing a good job. We get a big third down stop, and then we put a punt on the ground. I don’t know if that’s an adjustment or not. But you know then we go down and it becomes a 21-6 game. And you know, I agree, but we’re not at the point offensively where we’re going to come storming back and score 30 points. That’s just not who we are right now. We’re struggling a little bit up front with some things. We’ve got some issues right now. Mike [Williams] was playing injured and trying to see if he couldn’t push through [his hamstring.]

Schiano went on to say injuries and the lack of “cumulative reps,” aka continuity, has hurt the offense, though Schiano conceded the offense wasn’t good when the team was healthy early in the season.

First, what the heck is Schiano talking about “storming back?” The Bucs’ first four drives of the second half gained a grand total of 42 yards — 42 yards! – while the Panthers methodically extended their halftime lead of 14-6 to 31-6 midway through the fourth quarter.

This “storming back” Schiano talks about glosses over the fact the Bucs can’t move the chains when it counts.

And why can’t the Bucs “storm back?” Team Glazer is paying Vincent Jackson more than $10 million a year to make plays. The Bucs are pass blocking reasonably well. Are we to believe the Bucs don’t have enough talent to eat up yards and Schiano and friends can’t coach a two-minute offense?

Bucs fans were told Mike Glennon is the guy. Joe recalls Josh Freeman engineering fourth-quarter comebacks early in his career with receivers like Micheal Spurlock, Sammie Stroughter and Maurice Stovall. That’s right, Stovall caught more balls from Freeman than any other wide receiver in 2009.

Joe hates the “we-can’t” attitude.

And “storming back” isn’t just about offense. It’s about making big plays on defense, something the Bucs aren’t doing enough, despite elite talent on that side of the ball.

  1. Mr. Patrick Says:

Now that really sounds like a coach that doesn’t have much faith in his own team now doesn’t it? That’s when it’s time to go

  2. ShutTheBucUp Says:

Anyone thinks this offense as it stands right now is capable of blasting out 30 points is nuts. For one, Martin is out indefinitely. Our “1A” receiver is out for the season. We have no TE to speak of.

Pass blocking is reasonable? Where are the numbers to support that? Glennon has been sacked 10 times in 4 games.

You can see that the pass blocking is decent. As much as Glennon has thrown, as immobile as he is, that’s not a bad total.–Joe

  3. Adam L. Says:

Coach, do us a favor and NEVER speak.

    Ever.

  4. biff barker Says:

We’ve got 7 very good starters, 3 rookies and 12 subpar players starting in a bastard scheme on both sides of the ball.
At least he’s honest. We don’t have the players. We don’t have the coaches either.
Dom must go with the lot.

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

How is it that Sully gets a pass? Schiano is taking all of the heat…and he deserves most….but Sully is the OC & its his job to get results.

  6. Curmudgeon Says:

I don’t have a problem with him stating this. Clearly, they lack the competency at simple execution. How likely is it that the offense will explode for 30+ points in one half, when they’re struggling to put up 20 points in most games? Coach is just being realistic, which doesn’t excuse the overall ineptitude. It doesn’t matter anyway – Schiano is a dead man walking. If they win 2 games down the stretch, it’ll be a surprise.

  7. GBG Says:

This dude is a riot, you rush the v-formation, yet, you “can’t” find a way to overcome a deficit, with all the losing he did at Rutgers, how does this dude not have some sort of clue as to getting the most out of the most talent he’s EVER had on the offensive side of the ball as a coach, is mind-boggling.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Curmudgeon

Exactly….if Schiano stated that he expected us to come roaring back…..Joe and most fans would accuse him of being delusional

    Not at all. –Joe

  9. 1976Buc Says:

Lack of “continuity/cumulative reps” especially early in the season when everyone was healthy is probably because he sat starters on the bench during the preseason when every other team was getting in their “cumulative reps”!

  10. JK Says:

    At least he’s honest.

  11. Eric Says:

Not roaring back, roaring ahead, or staying even.

  12. []_[]Buc Says:

    TBBF

Your right. Sully’s scheme is simply garbage.
Last season’s short offensive burst was an anomoly that was immediately quieted once the league figured out Sully’s scheme.

We simply cannot be an offensive juggernaut with this predictable scheme especially considering that we are racking up injuries at an extraordinary level on that side if the ball.

“We cannot become what we need to be by remaining what we are.”

You wanna see change offensively? Fire Sully

He may be the first to go, they all will, but he may be the first.

  13. buccanAy Says:

Lame article..Shiano, for the bad coach he his, is exactly right…especially when defense cant stop ’em anyway….like the brutal honesty, anyway.

  14. BirdDoggers Says:

Every team has to deal with injuries and underperforming players. Schiano doesn’t seem to have a good handle on the whole NFL head coach thing.

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    “A man’s got to know his limitations”…..Eastwood

    “I don’t have any limitations”…LVD

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ []_[]Buc

Sully should be the first to go…..that’s life in the cold cruel world.
If I were a manager and sales were bad…my sales manager would get the ax before me…

Then Schiano, then Dom….then…..oops can’t fire the Glazers!!!

  17. BucsQcCity Says:

At least Sully don’t invite fans for gameplans and then leave them at the gate.

But he gotta go too.. There’s not enough evidence that he evolved as a True OC since having its promotion

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Oh I’m not a big Sheridan supporter but Schiano is totally controlling the defense…..even Sheridan said he was running Schiano’s defense. He’ll be gone with the rest of them.
Some of the assistants are pretty good coaches so I hope the new coach will keep them. I like Wannstedt for special teams, and Bostadt (even with O-line problems)….don’t think that’s coaching. And EB….for the Running Backs

  19. BucfaninMO Says:

    Dear Glazers,
Please make Schiano head coach of the popcorn makers, toilet cleaners or parking lot attendants but then again these hard working folks make adjustments after halftime. They know the true fans will be gone by then.

  20. Eric Says:

Actually down 21-6 you only need 15 points to tie.

  21. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Tampabaybucfan

“Exactly….if Schiano stated that he expected us to come roaring back…..Joe and most fans would accuse him of being delusional”

LOL Exactly!!! right or wrong, the perception of him is that he cant say or do anything right. stay strong bucs fans, take comfort in knowing we wont have to endure this for another season.

  22. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Andrew 1

“not at the point offensively where we’re going to come storming back and score 30 points.” this is what he said.

What if he said this…” at that point I thought we’d come storming back and score 30 points’

The media and fans would have called him an absolute maniac.

Absolutely…either way he is screwed…that’s what happens when you lose.

I can’t imagine what it would be like if somehow, someway we win Sunday. Not likely…but also not impossible.

  23. BFFL Says:

I’m so envious of fans from other teams because they actually get to enjoy a football season. This season was over as soon as it started and that is pathetic. It is obvious that the Bucs are no where close to winning. I think I’ll just find something else to do and check back in a few years to see how they are doing. I just can’t take this shit anymore.

  24. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Tampbaybucfan

just imagine if did win Sunday. this place would go bonkers! lol

  25. []_[]Buc Says:

    Ain’t that the truth.

    TBBF, A1

  26. Chef Paul Says:

LOL The coach quit on HIMSELF. And we were all worried about the players quitting on him

  27. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    A Schiano hater’s worst nightmare…BUCS BEAT SEAHAWKS

Now….I do think Schiano should be canned…but I don’t hate him. Hate is usually born out of fear….and most fear he will do longterm harm to the Bucs…I get that. But, I am still rooting for a win….its just in my blood!!!

  28. IdahoBucsfan Says:

Actually I’m afraid that Joebucsfan is having at least as bad of a year as the BUCS as far as putting a quality product out there for the fans. I give this one a D-!!!!!
    GO BUCS!

  29. Buc1987 Says:

TBBF…yah I’m rooting for it too, but I also know it’s not going to happen. Rooting and a reality are 2 different things. Like I said a few weeks back. As a fan I’m approaching every game for the rest of this season as the Bucs are going to lose with a hope that they win. YES the “we want a higher draft pick” crowd will call me a fool for wanting the team to win, but who cares. I’m serious, I want them to win atleast 6 out of their last 9, but it probably won’t happen. Like I said I’m expecting a loss every week now.

  30. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Only MEN admit when they’re wrong, and Pride cometh before the fall.
-It’s time began the dialogue with rehiring Gruden-

And if the Glazer’s have the stones to rehire Gruden-

    Question(s)
1.Do you thing that he’s best X’ & O’s, QB coach available coach?
2.What will Gruden bring back to the organization?
3.How will the team & fans react to his rehire?
4.Is this move in the best interest of the organization?

    YEP YEP YEP

  31. Chef Paul Says:

    TBBF.

I’m a Schiano hater and that’s not my worst nightmare at all. My worst nightmare is 0-16. I hate him simply because we are losing. The coaching style he has is the kind that is easy to love when winning, or even at .500, and easy to hate when losing consistently. I know you could say that about anybody, but we all know he’s quirky. We start winning, I stop hating.
And I would never ever hope or root for a lose. I don’t care about draft position. Were going to be in good shape there anyways. It’s not like we will be out of the top five. I just want a good couple wins. I hope I don’t sound condescending. You are a good fellow and I respect all of your opinions

  32. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Chef Paul

You aren’t condescending and you are right….all Schiano haters aren’t alike…I should have said some or most Schiano haters worst nightmare.
Many posters have a huge investment in hating Schiano and some hating Dominick….what I mean by their worst fear is that if he wins a few, he may stay….and if he stays…he may eventually succeed….and if he succeeds…they will be dead wrong….
    Now…do I think that will happen…NOPE!
And I applaud you Chef Paul for being what I call a true fan…be cause a true fan wants to win first.
A better draft pick is a consolation prize for losers.

  33. ShutTheBucUp Says:

I’d love to see us win. I just don’t see it happening. Too many key players are banged up and/or having a crappy year.

Also, for those thinking there is a chance the Glazers would hire Gruden, they fired him. Is there any coach in the modern NFL who has been fired, then re-hired by the same owners?

  34. BigMacAttack Says:

Sounds like our Coach is the one giving up. The losing is getting to him and it shows. Fans worried about players giving up on their coach, but it sounds like the coach is giving up on his players. This obviously isn’t the right man for this job. He has lost faith. Bye bye Coach.

  35. Capt. Tim Says:

You know, a guy as unpopular as Schiano, should never use the word
    “Storming”
It may make fans think of ” storming the castle”
    Or OneBuc place
Don’t need a bunch of torches and pitchforks on the news!

He is really over his head, isn’t he.
Rome is burning, and he has no idea of where to find a bucket, or where there’s a Water Spigot.

You can tell by his statements, that he doesn’t know what caused the collapse, or any idea how to stop it.

As I said in April, Rutgers is a loooong way from the NFL.
It’s become apparent- way too far

  36. Capt. Tim Says:

Sully isn’t in danger. It’s been well documented that we are running the Rutgers offense

  37. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Lieutenant Tim

Sully is in trouble…there is no way when Schiano is fired that he stays…and he could go first.

  38. John Says:

NOT STORMING BACK……..Sounds like we are talking about the coaches job security……

  39. Que589 Says:

I’m with you Joe I hate the “we can’t” attitude with a passion. A coach should NEVER say that’s not “who we are” as it relates to scoring on offense and getting stops on defense (“storming back”). That’s crazy, we’re talking about a professional football team!

  40. Splengo Says:

Just listen to all the beautiful voices singing my song. Six weeks ago I was a lone voice in the wilderness fighting back the rabid onslaught of the Schiano bandwagoneers.

I think when the job is finished here, I’m going up to the Redskins and help them with that name change. I kinda like the sound of the Washington Wagon Burners instead of Redskins. Lol.

  41. Bobby Says:

Had no problem with coaches comments. Anyone in their right mind can see that third team is incapable of ‘storming back’. We’ve been watching it. No storming in any games…period, unless you count the Bucs raining on the fan’s parade.

  42. Bobby Says:

“Only MEN admit when they’re wrong, and Pride cometh before the fall.
-It’s time began the dialogue with rehiring Gruden-”

    _______________________________________________________________

    Been there, done that…NOT INTERESTED.

  43. Capt. Tim Says:

    Bobby,
We know. You never had any problem with what he says- or does.
Including losing 13 of 14 games. Or him sounding like a beaten, dejected man.

I hope they give you a poster, hat, and ticket to each of the remaining games.
After Seattle, you will be the only fan there- and Shiano will be pretty lonely. You can keep him company.

  44. Eric Says:

Wait a minute splengo I called this disaster when the man was hired…..

  45. Mr. Patrick Says:

Remember back when Buc’s defenses use to score points?

  46. Splengo Says:

    True Dat! Eric,

Gotta give big ups to my man Eric for calling this the day Schiano was hired and never changed his tune! Few can make this claim.

  47. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

So Schiano is wrong for telling the truth? This team cannot “storm back” without a good QB and only one productive WR, the RB on IR and a OG that is rarely healthy.

This has nothing to do with having trust or faith in his players. The team ISN’T built to dcore points at the moment.

  48. Eric Says:

The thing is the dude is talking about his own team for which he is responsible for!

  49. []_[]Buc Says:

    There was no Schiano bandwagoners

Just individuals refusing to believe all the garbage being spewed about the man that has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that he is just not cutting it as an NFL coach.

While some are admitting that he should not have the rest of the season anymore I do not see those that were not buying the media lead attack changing their tunes either.

Accepting he is not a winning coach is one thing, hating a man and getting personal over “football” is another.

  50. Splengo Says:

    Come on Bracketed Buc,

There were lots of bandwagoneers. There evidently are still a few. Wink! Wink! You’re making a lot of people out there nervous cause I have no honor. I will name names! Lol

  51. BigMacAttack Says:

Gruden makes way too much sense for the Glazers to hire. Some people are too smart for their own good, and there is a buttload of them at 1 Buc Place.

  52. 1976 Bucs Says:

Checked out! I think we can all relate at some point in our lives. It’s as clear as day, that coach Schiano is done. I find it troubling that our Head Coach and President of the United States are so delusional about these situations. Change and Relief is needed on all accounts for all of us. GO BUCS…

  53. []_[]Buc Says:

    Make no mistake Splengo

I want Schiano and company gone.

But it only goes as far as his lack of W’s for me.

    Nothing else.

And lol maybe they are sweating bullets 😉

  54. Malevolent Creation Says:

Joe, I think u might have actually sold yourself on firing schiano.

  55. Malevolent Creation Says:

Bobby, how about Rutgers season ticket holder for life?

  56. Andrew 1 Says:

what Schiano needs to do now is just let those goes go play ball. stop bogging them down with unconventional schemes, that arent even working anyway! Im talking about our defense.

play a more simplistic style of defense and let the players talents be the reason why we win. thats what I would like to see happen, but I dont expect to see that happen.

  57. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Splengo

You were urging the firing of Schiano 6 weeks ago…if that’s the case…you wanted the man fired after he lost 2 games…one because of an awful penalty and the other perhaps from a missed field goal.
    I salute you Splengo…you are a genius.
Myself, I gave up after the Philidelphia game…I’m not quite as clairvoyant as you.

  58. Bucgirl76 Says:

Ugh, Schiano needs to fired ASAP. This is ridiculous. He is in way over his head, and it’s obvious he has no idea how to deal with it or the players he has on his own team.

I’m so glad I love other sports as well as football, so I know what good coaches other Tampa teams have in Jon Cooper and Joe Maddon. Schiano is now in ‘worse than Leeman Bennett’ territory, and that was some bad territory for an 11-year-old. The Bucs have not been 0-7 since 1977 when I was 3 years old.

I just cannot deal with this coach anymore. I’m supporting the players but not this coach.

  59. Cmurda Says:

Storming back? The Bucs were down a meager 8 points at halftime. They didn’t need to storm back until they meticulously got their butts handed to them in the 2nd half. This man has no earthly idea what to do.

  60. David Says:

“Attitude reflects leadership” I dont dislike Schiano, but as a Bucs fan, I’m sick and tired of losing. Some of the worst franchises are the best now. It’s been 11 years since we won a playoff game. F-ing A! It’s time for some change dammit!

  61. Splengo Says:

    TBBF,

No genius, just rational. I saw this movie before. I saw it in 2010 at the 49ers. I know incompetence when I see it. And I saw you and the other Bandwagoneers do the lemming over the cliff thingy. No you’re the genius. Now let’s see if you can help him out of this on time failure.

I’m not going anywhere. I’ll be right here to celebrate with you and the others who have conveniently changed their minds when you saw the edge of the cliff. Lol

  62. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Splengo

I never supported Schiano or his methods….I just didn’t outright attack him.
As for “conveniently” changing my mind….I think changing my mind once more evidence is in is a perfectly rational thing to do….so I am guilty of changing my mind…..and guess what…I guess the Owners & GM don’t agree with you or they would have fired him 6 weeks ago like you suggest.

  63. Splengo Says:

    TBBF,

You are the genius! You got it right. They should have fired him 6 weeks ago. I’m going to get out of the giant worm scrum and let you and the Bandwagoneers continue with the Ain’t it Awful party. So good night and we’ll talk again Sunday night round 8ish! Chow!

  64. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Splengo

    It’s CAIO…..by the way…and being Italian…Schiano knows that word…..

  65. Splengo Says:

No! It’s Chow! Bout to fix me a sammich and a 40! Lol.

  66. []_[]Buc Says:

    TBBF

    Don’t sweat it

Atleast we were able to look at it objectively and eventually say “hey this guy should actually go afterall.”

Splengo how was your clairvoyance in regards to Freeman?
I seem to remember you being quite the advocate.

…Well, you win some you lose some I guess…

    We’ll call it a draw 😉

  67. Bulldog Says:

    Go Jags ! chuckle

  68. Bobby Says:

There’s Capt Tim posting under his many names. Timmy, unlike you I was able to admit I was wrong about Freeman and all I said about Schiano is why make your life miserable by screaming ‘fire Schiano’ every post? I said these things work themselves out. If you lose you will be fired…just not when the fans say so. It’s like the Freeman thing lil’ guy…these things work themselves out.

  69. Capt. Tim Says:

I would be the other one that called this bad hire. It was madness to think a .500 tiny college coach could make the transition to the NFL!

And I caught hell when I talked about Schianos Schemes.
Now, everyone has identified those schemes as the major problem.

Unbelievable this guy is trying to coach an NFL franchise.
Even more Unbelievable that our GM hired him to do so!!

  70. Capt. Tim Says:

One have one name , Bobby. Only need one!

  71. Cmurda Says:

Man, there is one sobering stat that stands out. I was gazing at the NFL Standings with jaw open in bewilderment as I stare at our 0-7 mark. Our points scored is at 100! One freaking hundred through 7 games. Only the Jags have less points scored. The offense was supposed to be the strength of our team as the season began. The defense has been slightly above average and I don’t have major complaints except for continued, inept DL pressure. I am appalled at our anemic offense. Quite simply, heads need to roll. The only question now is, how many heads?

  72. Splengo Says:

    No! No! Brackets,

You got the wrong guy! Check with TBBF. I’m no Freemanite. I wanted him gone over the offseason – only way to ensure Schiano had no cover. Freeman’s gone – good! Now Schiano has the floor all to himself – good!

  73. k1ngadroc Says:

@bigmacattack is right on the money.. Watch last weeks after game presser and anything since with Schiano and you will see a defeated man with no answers.
Gruden does make a lot of sense but ownership would have to swallow their ego to make it happen. Unfortunately Bucs ownership has WAAY too much ego and not enough common sense

  74. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Hey….is there anyone out there who would actually like to see us win Sunday?

  75. Andrew 1 Says:

yes, I would like to see us win.

  76. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    []_[]Buc & Splengo

Actually I wasn’t either a supporter of Freeman or Glennon…I’m just like most fans…just wanting to win with whatever coach & QB we have….I “hoped” that Josh would do well (doesn’t make me a supporter) I “hope” Schiano wins for us as long as the owners intend to keep him there….and now that Glennon is our QB….I want him to succeed….what a novel thought.
And…I hope Glennon becomes elite….why…because he is cheap and we already have him under contract and we won’t have to use a pick for a QB in 2014.
Now…and Splengo….pay attention…..hoping doesn’t mean I think it will happen…it doesn’t mean I think the QB and Coach are right for the part…..Hoping & Believing are two different things for me….maybe not you ….but for me they are.

  77. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Andrew 1

I knew you’d be there….so would PR Buc Fan who I think was banished….If you’re out there PR….you are missed.

  78. Andrew 1 Says:

    boooo!!!! bring back PR!!!

  79. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I hope he is able to return perhaps with another name…he was banned for posting a competive link to JBF…

  80. Splengo Says:

    OK TBBF,

You get a “Good Guy” button, please don’t ask for a small parade. You should know by now not to take everything I say seriously. You guys need to get a sense of humor. There’s a full blown comedy going on right in front of your face. Gotta learn to laugh a little, as in LOL!

  81. Andrew 1 Says:

sucks. never understood Joe’s link policy. even when I post a link relevant to the topic he posted about, he still removes it. he should probably just make it no posting links whatsoever.

  82. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Splengo

Here’s something for sense of humor….my next door neighbor is a huge Falcon fan & he came to me seriously to ask what a fan should do when his team is out of it early….I told him I was a Buc fan and I didn’t have any experience with that sort of thing….then I told him to root for the Saints & Panthers…he said why should I do that & I told him if the win their draft picks will be worse….

  83. k1ngadroc Says:

I am rooting for big BUCS WIN on Sunday! I go into most every game over the past 15 years thinking we going to play tough, swarming D and have a good chance to win. I don’t feel that way anymore. Lavante is a beast and i love watching him play, even if it’s in a losing effort! GO BUCS!

  84. Buc1987 Says:

k1ngadroc … or King Ad-Rock lol. Beastie Boys! Yah Go Bucs no matter what. Right TBBF? We will wait. We’ll wait out turn. It will come right Andrew 1? The NFL runs in cycles. I just thought that it was the Bucs turn on the cycle THIS season. It’s late as F and I’m taking the day off tomorrow. Insomnia-mania.

This season really sucks balls. What’s really torturing for me is this season is the first time I bought season tickets in the more than 25 yrs I’ve been a Bucs fan.

I will march on though. I encourage the rest of you to do the same. It’s another season flushed down the toilet for us Bucs fans, but we’ll deal with it, right?

Only the strong survive. Either deal with this season or abandon your team and join them when the going is good, making you a bandwagon fan. Trust me you don’t want to be one of them.

@Joe I know what your dealing with as a Bucs fan. It must be tough to have to write so much negativity about the team you love every day. BUT that’s all there is right now. So just march on like the rest of us. Sure you are going to take some flack from time to time. BUT don’t think for a second that your site does not matter to Bucs fans. I think this site is really going to take off when the team starts winning. I just don’t have any clue when that might be. Okay good night to no one that is going to read this at 4 a.m. I’m taking my drunk ass to bed.

  85. MTM Says:

Schiano is in over his head and his coaching staff is either first time assistants or has been head coaches who can’t get a job anywhere because they SUCK!. This entire staff is awful.
Sully- QB coach turned offensive coordinator-zero innovation whatsoever.
Butch Davis- hasn’t had success in 20+ years. Not even sure what his position is. Adviser to Schiano-that says it all.
Dave Wandstat- His best days are behind him and they weren’t that great to begin with.
Bill Sheridan- Giants canned this clown after having the next to worst defense in the league. It only took 1 yr for the Giants to dump this turd.
    GM- see 2009 draft picks.
Now Glazers tell me how this is going to get better over time.
