Snap-Count Silliness Has Vanished

August 27th, 2013

Joe found last week’s popular chatter about how Josh Freeman wasn’t going to get enough preseason reps to be ready rather silly.

Really? Were we to believe that a handful of snaps would affect Freeman or any other quarterback’s season?

The stat geeks at BSPN have added up 2013 preseason snap counts of starting quarterbacks across the NFL, and after Saturday’s Bucs-Dolphins game, Freeman has more preseason snaps than Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and Colin Kaepernick.

Joe suspects nobody in the home cities of those QBs is freaking out.

  1. Mean D Says:

Yes, but Freeman is nowhere near as good as Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees or Colin Kaepernick.

  2. mike norris Says:

Those other qbs are all really good. Those other qbs have all been to the superbowl recently. Our qb is closer to ryan fitzpatrick than a. rogers.

  3. DallasBuc Says:

I can’t wait until there is actually something meaningful to care about. All these meaningless predictions and ignorant criticisms of coaches and players is driving me up the wall. Week 1 can’t get here soon enough.

  4. SteveK Says:

Joe, you close with, “i don’t see the fans in the cities of Super Bowl, Super Bowl and Super Bowl loser.

Playoff QB should be acknowledged, and appreciated. “team” or not, in today’s NFL, if a team makes it to the playoffs said QB has to do more Han Dilfer. It’s a different game now, and a playoff QB is something to be recognized, on a less degree but with the se respect a Super Bowl Champion QB.

  5. SteveK Says:

    * sent from my stupid ass iPhone

  6. FloridaGirl Says:

Really????!!?!?! I think Freeman will be okay too, but come on JBF……The home cities of those QBs have no reason to worry about a snap count……don’t compare limes to apples..

  7. SteveK Says:

    Mike Norris,

You’re right, Freeman and Fitzpatrick lead the league with 39 INTs over the past two years.

Hope we make it to the playoffs.

  8. Drew Says:

Theres a major difference between the qb’s you mentioned and Josh Freeman lol!

  9. patinchicago Says:

why would they? (freak out, that is….)

  10. Raphael Says:

Free is gonna have a great year…can’t wait ..

    freeman. 62 passes
    Brees. 60 passes
    Kapernik. 33 passes
    Cam Newton 80 passes
    Brady 86 passes
    P . manning 94 passes
    tannehill. 103 passes

  11. tampa2wo Says:

“…Freeman has more preseason snaps than Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and Colin Kaepernick. Joe suspects nobody in the home cities of those QBs is freaking out.”

Right, because two of the QB’s have recently won Super Bowls and are top 5 QB’s and the third took his team to the playoffs. I want to like Freeman, but he’s making it hard to continue to support him.

  12. Walter Says:

    @Stevek

So you’re saying that Christian Ponder should be looked at as a special QB because he’s been to the playoffs?

I understand the QB position is important, but lets not all get carried away here, a lot of those “great” QB’s in the playoffs last year were on good teams. (Dalton, Ponder, Wilson, Kaepernick, Shaub, RG III)

  13. Mr Lucky Says:

Snap count….Snap count……Who cares about snap count?

    I FREAKIN DO!

Did anyone notice that Joe Flacko AND Tom Brady were in the top 10? That’s because those teams understand that QB’s and WR’s need to develop some timing and rhythm prior to starting the season.

Frankly Freeman looked like a long-tailed cat in a roomful of rocking chairs against the Dolphins. To me is was painful to watch 2nd year fins QB Tanninhill hitting the quick slant and releasing early while 5th year Freeman did little to instill any confidence.

Maybe the reason Freeman got so little preseason “snaps” was because the HC is under the impression that Glennon may be needed to take over this season….????

HOPEFULLY that above will not be necessary

HOPEFULLY the defense will materalize and the special teams get oodles of turnovers and the Bucs will go 3-1 into their bye….one can dream

  14. Buc1987 Says:

    We’ve got Dougie!

  15. Oahubuc Says:

Freeman… Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and Colin Kaepernick.

Which of these things is not like the others?

  16. Raphael Says:

    Colin kaepernik. ^^^^^^^

He will be the worst of the 4

  17. Free's A Boob Says:

Raphael, where do you get your drugs cause it’s obviously some wicked stuff. It doesn’t matter if Free has 10 snaps or 10,000 snaps. You can’t fix stupid.

The mention of real QBs in the same sentence as Freeman is inane. He is not, nor ever will be, either Manning, Brees, Wilson, Kaepernick, Luck, or RG III. He will be what he has always been, a loser.

Oahubuc, that sounds like a Wunderlich test which I am sure Free got a 3 on.

  18. RBellBuc Says:

Wow, that came across as a backhanded jab on Freeman even though statistically it’s true. To knowingly compare him to those other QB’s you knew would incite another riot! .. lol … someone here’s a lil’ troublemaker! lol

  19. Buc1987 Says:

RBellBuc… Joe knows his site is full of a bunch of Freeman hating whiners.

  20. SteveK Says:

    Walter,

Adrian Peterson, Jared Allen and Percy Harvin all helped. I can’t say Ponder did more, but he didn’t have spells of extremely poor play, nor did he have extreme deviations in his performance

  21. Buc1987 Says:

@Raphael …you are correct Freeman is going to have a great year! All season long while Glennon rides the pine, and Josh haters whine.

  22. RBellBuc Says:

So you’re saying that this guy Joe throws them a bone once in a while? What a humanitarian!

  23. Free's A Boob Says:

Is there a club for Freeman haters? Count me in. Although I prefer “Free’s a Boob” for the t-shirt I could also back one with his picture and a logo “I’m so confused”

  24. Buc1987 Says:

    RBellBuc…lol yup he loves it!

  25. Buc1987 Says:

Free’s A Boob ..unfortunately for you there’s not. This site actually has more Freeman believers than haters. You are part of a club of 4 people.

  26. Walter Says:

    @Stevek

On the contrary, Ponder had some HORRIBLE games. Are you sure you know who you’re talking about? Check his #’s in weeks 4,7,9, 13, 14, AND 15. That’s almost half a seasons worth of HORRIBLE games. Look, I’m not trying to antagonize you, but I just don’t see how you can truly believe Ponder is better than Freeman. The only thing he did better than Freeman was throw less INT’s, and that’s not hard to do when your #1 source of offense is coming from your RB. And before you bring up Doug Martin, let me add that our rushing offense was ranked 15th, our passing offense was ranked 9th.

  27. GRIF4FREESUX Says:

@raphelia,u are so full of s**t,freeman sucks and u know it.You just like to stir sh#t up like the little teenage girl you are.GUARANTEED U would never put your money where ur mouth is on any of ur BS predictions:bucs going 11-5 or freeman being better than kaepernick.GET REAL MAN!

  28. Free's A Boob Says:

Buc 1987 Where do you guys find these awesome substances? Tequila?

6-10 at best. Not only due to Free but Dominick screwed the pooch on the d-line, not a clue what Revis will do, not sure if Nicks plays, and the place kicker is an issue everyone ignores but is a game-changer. Missing Barth changes the entire decision tree.

  29. Eric Says:

Don’t really care about the snap counts. It’s more the “looking like he never played the game before” quality of many of the snaps he’s had.

That crap won’t fly, even against the jets. But I am open to it being only preseason since the real bullets start in a few days.

Then we can all at least agree that the Bucs will be trying to play their best, including Free. Excuses will be harder to come by.

  30. Buc1987 Says:

Bucs go 11-5 with Freeman as the starter in the playoffs @ home.

  31. Raphael Says:

@ grif4freesux…I stand by what i said, Freeman wil have a great year, and we will be 11 – 5 …. Book it…Freeman is a stud franchise QB . And our franchise record holder at 25 yrs old..

  32. Buc1987 Says:

“not a clue what Revis will do”

    Yes Free’s A Boob …we finally agree. You don’t have a clue.

  33. GRIF4FREESUX Says:

@BI$$H1987^^^^^^4 POSTS UP APPLIES TO YOU ALSO.

  34. Buc1987 Says:

    GRIF4FREESUX & Free’s A Boob = both the same person.

  35. Free's A Boob Says:

OMG! Do you write jokes for Leno too? Come January Free willl be home holding his snake

  36. Raphael Says:

On top of that I say Freeman will have 3 comebacks this year in the 4 th qtr for wins .

  37. RichinNC Says:

    Brees 25-34 371 yards
    Rodgers 17-24 237 yards
    Kaepernick 12-19 107 yards
    Freeman 12-26 101 yards

seems pretty even to me…(that was sarcasm)

I do hope Freeman can atleast manage the game. Let the run game win it just don’t turn it over or call crappy run plays on 3rd down when your head set goes out.

  38. Raphael Says:

    Seems like it bucs1987

  39. Raphael Says:

@ richinNC. How did Brady do against the lions ?? Lol

  40. GRIF4FREESUX Says:

    BUC1987=RAPHAEL IS MORE LIKE IT.

  41. Stanglassman Says:

For the record Josh Freeman wonderlic score was 27 and Mike Glennon was 26. Tebow 22 a couple higher than Vick 20. ‘Can’t fix stupid’- Boob

  42. Buc1987 Says:

I’m going to this weeks preseason game. There I will once again hold up a sign in support of Freeman. This one will read Freeman is God Awesome. 11-5 beotches read it and weep. As in weep like you have been doing all summer long.
Weeping and whining over this and that and then Freeman does this and he sucks at that. We have no chance in hell, boo hoo, hoo hoo.

  43. Buc1987 Says:

RichinNC…ya know what I hope Rich? I hope that Freeman goes out and lights the field up and shuts these whining Buc fans up once and for all. Actually I’m not hoping, because I’m confident he will.

  44. Free's A Boob Says:

Glennon has a masters and speaks English

  45. SteveK Says:

    Walter,

Ponder 2012 CMP ATT YDS CMP% AVG TD LNG INT FUM QBR RAT
    300 483 2,935 62.1 6.08 18 65 12 7 53.8 81.2

Freeman 2012 CMP ATT YDS CMP% AVG TD LNG INT FUM QBR RAT
    306 558 4,065 54.8 7.29 27 95 17 10 53.1 81.6

Pretty close stuff. I wonder what the three and out percentages and passes tipped/batted down are for each? If I had to guess, I’d say Freeman had a higher percentage of both, but maybe it just feels that way?

Adrian Peterson carried Ponder to the playoffs, but Ponder did not suffer a 5 game losing streak nor back to back 4 INT games… I

  46. Buc1987 Says:

The fact that the whiners take preseason so seriously is pure comedy to me. I do hope they are still around JBF throughout the season, when the Bucs are going off the chain. I know I will be regardless. If they choose to run away or create a new name, it’s okay with me. I have all their BS well documented and saved. Just to show what the Buc fan base is like and how ignorant they really are. That’s right 11-5. That’s eleven and five. Meh I might be off by 1 and they go 10-6 we’ll see.

  47. SteveK Says:

Damn, I spent 10 minutes spacing out their stats, sorry Walter.

Point is, it is close… Freeman threw for more TDs, more INTs, more Fumbles and lower completion percentage.

Ponder necked out Freeman by 0.7 of a point in QBR, and Freeman edged Ponder by 0.4 QB Rating… Lookes like a wash, except Ponder made the playoffs….

  48. Buc1987 Says:

If I’m wrong by seasons end. I’ll still be here and call myself an idiot. I hope the rest of you will do the same if your wrong.

  49. SteveK Says:

    Buc1987,

Preseason means nothing, and thank god because our team has looked like utter sh*t.

Who is whining about their record? I expect playoffs, anything less would be a damn shame.

I hope the offense comes out and plays better than they did last year. This should be a big year.

How is our Pass D? Second biggest question behind Freeman.

  50. Buc1987 Says:

Look it’s going to be all about Dougie anyways. Just like Ponder in Minny, it’s all about AP. SteveK…you can say it’s a QB’s game now all you want. Then I can counter it with Flacco and Ponder are garbage without Rice and AP.

  51. tampabaybucfan Says:

Lets ask Shaun King about snap count in the preseason…because I am sure he knows because he knows it all.

“Shaun King, one of two Buc Quarterbacks that lost a NFC Championship Game when his defense gave up 11 or fewer points.”

  52. Buc1987 Says:

SteveK…I did not accuse you of whining. Scroll up and you will see the whiners. You know who they are. Your not one of them.

  53. Buc1987 Says:

    “How is our Pass D?”

Actually I think it will be just fine. Of course I’m a firm believer in Schiano. There is some people on this site that think Schiano is garbage. I on the other hand think Schiano is the type of coach that can turn sh*t into gold. Kind of like Joe Maddon. Why on earth he stays with the Rays is beyond me, when he can go to a big market team, get paid 3 times as much and win ring after ring. Sorry I brought up baseball as I am a diehard Red Sox fan.

  54. Keith Says:

agree, Joe. Snap counts in August are stupid.

  55. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Dammmmn Panthers Cut WR Joe Adams…It’s rough out there son.

  56. Stanglassman Says:

You are correct boob and I’m sure Josh is well aware of that because he travels. As anyone like Josh who has been to England and mentioned ‘you speak English’ you will be quickly corrected that you do not speak English you speak ‘American’ just like Mike Glennon and somewhat you.

  57. Buc1987 Says:

I predicted 6-10 last season and I was off by 1. I also had no idea that the Bucs would regress in 2011 to 4-12. If you check the so called experts none of them had no idea as well most of them had the Bucs at 11-5 and 10-6. I guess I was thinking around the same thing as them back then. I’m sorry if I don’t see this team going backwards from 7-9 after sooo many close games from a rookie head coach last season. I see atleast 3-4 more wins.

  58. kgh4life Says:

under normal circumstances I wouldn’t worry about a qb preseason snap count, however, Freeman and the first team offense overall have looked horrible. The majority of it coming from Freeman and the oline. The wrs also dropped too many balls this preseason; are we supposed to believe they turn around in for the regular season. Call me crazy but I would play the first team offense all 1st quarter in the final preseason game

  59. Walter Says:

    @Stevek

All I know is, if Ponder was a Buccaneer, you wouldn’t be any more satisfied with our QB’s performance right now.

  60. Dave Says:

Bucs 1987 you need a life pal, all you do is post and post and post on this site, go make a friend, buy a hooker, do something you fat ass but get offline

  61. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I seem to recall a team…the Colts under Manning?…losing all their preseason games one year and nearly going undefeated in the regular season. Preseason means nothing at all. Want proof? Anyone able to remember our preseason record the year we won the superbowl without looking it up? Nope. Cause it doesn’t matter!

  62. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Buc1987 Says
“…I hope that Freeman goes out and lights the field up and shuts these whining Buc fans up once and for all…”

We could win 7 of the first 8 games and none of them will stop whining. It’s part of their genetics. What they say doesn’t matter. Only the facts do and come this season the facts will prove you, me, and all the other “homers” right. But the haters will still hate. Watch and see.

  63. kgh4life Says:

@BuccaneerBonzai. I want to agree with you, but history has told us otherwise. History says that Freeman will be inconsistent. He will wow you one minute then frustrate you the next. Until Freeman proves otherwise the “haters” will keep on hating.

  64. Buc1987 Says:

Yes Bonzai but most of them won’t be around. I hope they still are, but I suspect most will change their names to change their colors.

  65. Buc1987 Says:

“7 of the first 8 games and none of them will stop whining”

kgh4life…do you call that inconsistent winning 7 out of the first 8 games?

What he’s saying is, even if Freeman does that, they will still hate.

    —————————————–

Dude I don’t think one person here will whine or be disappointed if josh freeman lights it up ! Your ego has ticked me off. It’s called facts most of us bucs fans are trying to entail and what we’ve seen of josh.

Not one person is rooting against him. I would love to e wrong from the truth and facts of my analysis of him in prior articles. There are no josh haters here nor buc haters. Just fans that aren’t delusional like you and call it how I see it.

Can this team win the division? Yes but a lot of things need to go right. It’s not just josh. Davin Joseph and Carl nicks coming off swipes injuries. How can we expect them at 100% ? With no depth behind them? The lack of pass rush and josh Freeman’s inconsistencies where he’s coming off a 6 game stretch of down right atrocious play that has carried into the preseason.

We can win 10-11 games but could finish last in the division again. To me it’s a toss up. But will root for the best to happen !

  67. Patrick Says:

NO DUH because those other players are FRANCHISE QUARTERBACKS. Freeman is barely even starting caliber!

  68. Buc1987 Says:

“Your ego has ticked me off. It’s called facts most of us bucs fans are trying to entail and what we’ve seen of josh.”

Gee that’s great Chris and I think 50% of the Bucs fan base are idiots? Which 50% do you fall on?

There are MANY on this site that are rooting against him to prove they are right. Just look around and read the comments that they post.

  69. Dano Says:

Its put-up time for Freeman. He got passes the last few years. No more excuses. He can’t throw short -intermediate passes & it drives me nuts! If the O-line doesn’t protect him, its going to be a very long season.

  70. Buc1987 Says:

@Chris why don’t you attack Bonzai while your at it. Afterall he made this statement.

“We could win 7 of the first 8 games and none of them will stop whining. It’s part of their genetics. What they say doesn’t matter. Only the facts do and come this season the facts will prove you, me, and all the other “homers” right. But the haters will still hate. Watch and see.”

    How’s that for ego?

  71. Buc1987 Says:

Nicks will be starting by week 2 and Joesph will be 100% come week 1 along with Revis. That’s what I mean by whiners. Maybe I should call them worry warts I don’t know. People need to stop attacking me until I’m proven wrong. Anyone ever think abou that?

  72. Buc1987 Says:

Look Chris they have this word called an opinion. You and a few others around JBF have yours which is negative and the woe is me the poor Bucs fan, we are doomed.
Then there is me, Bonzai, Raphael,WestCoast, Junkie, SteveK and several others that think positive and don’t look at this season as woe as me the poor Buc fan, we are doomed. Perhaps it is the picture Joe paints for you I don’t know. I’m not blaming Joe or dragging him into this. Ego? I don’t know about that. I do know one thing though when I see a 1/2 empty RJS on Sundays after finding JBF I can fully understand why it’s 1/2 empty by reading some of the comments in here of these great Buc fans.

  73. PRBucFan Says:

lol clever Joe clever, well done

  74. Chris Says:

I do 87. And a lot of it is analysis. Not homerism. Some of its frustration. But hate? No. Some people will think it’s hate bc it’s not what you want to hear.

These are bucs fans that post here. I for one have an opinion and am not delusional. I will admit my frustration with a ton of decision making that starts with the gm. Many will blame the owners but let me ask you this, it’s better to let the football guys do what they do instead of a Dallas cowboy or NY jets where the owner makes too many decisions football personnel wise.

This is where I have to disagree. I nor any other buc fan here should have to explain themselves. Of course I want a dominate season turned in by my bucs. Each and every year I’m positive. Heck ifs hey were 0-10 is watch them til seasons end.

However I’m not going to sit here and give you a review when I don’t see it. I base things on facts. I’m not sure how many people feel really good with the way our “franchise qb” has looked. And it’s the same look of the last six games to close the season. There’s no quality depth to this team. Nicks and Joseph suffer serious injuries so do bowers and Clayborn. No depth was brought in behind them. Even nicks admitted he will have to deal with this the rest of his career. Joseph had a torn patella tendon. That ended caddy’s playing days. Sure they play different positions but it’s still not going to be easy and to say a worse injury than ACL is not easy to come back 100%.

Clayborn looks better every day. I’m more confident he comes back 100%. I just see him as a dominate force that breaks out. Bowers , well not a lot of people still come back from torn Achilles. That’s been something that bothers dlinemen after the surgery. Look at Merriman. Bowers also has that knee issue. Plus he’s looked like crap and never has been a starter. And we brought no insurance. We have no depth behind our dline. Too many rookies with inexperience that we’re relying on.

  76. BucDan Says:

    @Chris

I believe what Buc1987 is trying to say is that there is a distinct difference with somebody posting: “I’m not sure if Josh can do it. He still looks inconsistent.” and coming to every thread with “JOSH FREEMAN IS AN IDIOT” or “Josh Freeman SUCKS” as their main posts with no analysis of why other than “Look at his 5 preseason drives”. Yes, we know that has hasn’t played well coming off of last year, but it almost seems as if some people have never seen him have a good game period.

Somebody posted stats a few comments up comparing other QBs’ completion percentage this preseason without even showing how many snaps the guys have taken. Josh didn’t stay on the field into the second quarter until game three. Something that the other QBs had already done.

I’m not saying that I have been impressed with our first team play, because I absolutely have not been. However, I’ve seen enough football to know that I need to see a full game that counts and that has been game planned for before I REALLY start jumping to conclusions.

  77. Chris Says:

Defensively our coaching staff needs to look at the tape and cut out the stunts. Sheesh. I laugh every single time because they don’t work. A good staff realizes it when it doesn’t work to try something better. New England game: 3rd down were running a stunt? That’ll give any qb time.

  78. Chef Paul Says:

I hate to sound like a worry wart. But the last few years, this has been the best time of the year for OUR Bucs. Every year before the season we have so many reasons to be optimistic, only to have that optimism cut short. This year is the same. We have so many reasons to think this is going to be a great year. Basically what I’m saying is, even though I think Freeman gets it this year, I totally understand the guarded enthusiasm (to put it lightly) the doubters have. This debate is totally warranted based on how this team has performed the last 3 years.

  79. BucDan Says:

Debate is always warranted because as fans of the team we should always be looking for improvement. I’m on the Super Bowl-or-Bust team every year. All it takes is a streak of games to get you to the big show. This is a team that should have went to the playoffs at 10-6 a few years back. The way the league numbers and tie breakers played, we got left out. Josh Freeman led that team to victory multiple times that year. His play lifted the team in the closing minutes of three or four games.

Now, that WAS a few years ago and the past is the past. The kid can play to victory….as well as defeat. Last year he had two different streaks. One in which he was a top 5 QB and the other where he was bottom of the league. This is almost turning into a Romo debate. Good QB that hasn’t been able to ‘take’ his team to the playoffs.

    @Chris

I am with you on the scheme side of things. Both defensively and offensively. You see too many stunts on the D-Line and I don’t see enough of putting VJax in the slot or on the move in motion to free him up to make big plays. He does not need to run a damn post route all game. We need to play more to the strengths of the players that we have on the roster. Please for the love of all that is holy move the pocket for #5. Have him roll out a few times a game. GIVE him the option to tuck and run. FORCE the defense to respect his mobility. Let him play out of shotgun more on first downs. Run a little bit of no huddle every now and then. Wrinkles in the playbook are always a good thing (unless it is a shotgun RB toss on 3rd-and-7…. I’m looking at you Sully).

I will end this by saying that I have been impressed with Glennon so far this preseason. I really wish he had some time with the first team WRs and O-Line this preseason. Not to say to take the starting job, but to give everybody a more clear view on how he plays against true competition. I have watched last seasons games about 3-4 times each. I came away with the conclusion that Josh had two terrible games. Everybody here knows which ones. Thing is, that’s two out of nine losses. Defense gave up the final minute lead in three others. The leads which #5 drove the team down the field and scored.

One of my biggest takeaways from this preseason with Josh’s limited play was that he still did not throw an interception. A few ugly ducks, but no straight-to-Lauranitus throws. My main gripe with Josh is that he likes to move the chains with his arm. Throw the short yardage route and let the RB or TE make a play for a few yards. Irks the hell out of me.
