Who Has More Job Security?

July 18th, 2013

Former Bucs guard Ian Beckles says general manager Mark Dominik is on a hotter seat than Greg Schiano, but Beckles says the Bucs taking a step backward in 2013 could sink the entire regime.

Bucs fans have had far too much time on their hands to agonize, analyze and speculate. It’s been a long but fun offseason filled with exciting change and great debates.

One hot topic has been the job security of rockstar general manager Mark Dominik versus Greg Schiano.

Some say Dominik has stocked the shelves for Schiano with gobs of Pro Bowl talent and a blend of young players on the rise and solid veterans in their prime. So Schiano must produce an improved team to survive. But others believe Dominik, not Schiano, is the one on the hot seat because the Bucs must become winners for him to earn a sixth season as GM.

Former Bucs guard Ian Beckles (1990-1996), co-host of Ron and Ian on WDAE-AM 620, said yesterday it is Dominik who owns the hotter seat. “Dominik has to prove himself,” said Beckles, who shared the same thought about Josh Freeman, citing Freeman’s 24-32 record.

Beckles went on the clarify his position saying Schiano is “safe,” but only if 2013 finishes “headed in the right direction.”

In the coming weeks, Joe expects other media types to declare sides in this Dominik-Schiano debate.

Hot-seat chatter aside, Joe believes it is Schiano who has most to prove. One of the great X-factors of this season is Schiano’s performance as a game manager and a leader. Nobody really knows if Schiano can emerge as a winner in the NFL, whether his defense is the right fit, and whether he can prove better than division rivals Mike Smith or Sean Payton.

I don’t see it as he has to produce a winner to keep his job this season. Remember, his first 3 seasons were spent fixing the salary cap, no free agents and an amateur HC, that he didn’t hire. These years are what some people call dead years, where you have to do clear up prior messes inorder to move ahead. And if you look back to how DOm managed to get our cap fixed and still put a somewhat compelling (I didn’t say winning) product on the field it’s kinda amazing. The Gruden/Allen regime left us in cap hell, a lot of dead and wasted money was on the books and someone had to clean that up. No, I think the real clock for Dom started when he hired Schiano. I believe he has thru the end of Schiano’s contract to prove himself before the Glazers would make a move to replace him.

Mike Smith and Sean Payton have superior quarterbacks.

  3. Bucs Will Win NFCS Says:

I think Dom and Schiano leave at the same time which won’t be this year unless something goes terribly wrong.

  4. stevek Says:

    Hot Seat Priority:

    1 A QB Josh Freeman

    2 B GM Mark Dominick

    3 C HC Schiano

Maybe, but Bresus who eats up 20% of their cap doesn’t play defense,
and when I want peace and quiet, I put my phone in Falcon mode – No Ring….

I think their fate is sealed together….and that would only be a disasterous two year slide. I don’t expect that to happen.

  7. BucsfaninChina Says:

The only way we have an absolute meltdown this yr is if we continue to get bit by the injury bug. No way Schiano would let this team slides to a record that would get the HC and GM fired.

Training camp hasnt started and Bucs fans already thinking the sky is falling, maybe Stroud was right…

  8. BucsfaninChina Says:

    Scuse me, kaufman

Why is there even a debate at this point? We haven’t even started training camp and media types are already betting on who gets ousted. What if we have a fantastic season? Will the media fabricate some controversy just so it looked like they didn’t waste our time. You know, just because some of the media doesn’t like some of the moves that have been made shouldn’t make it open season on two of the most important people on our team.

The local media acts as if we’re gonna have a crappy season. How’s that for rallying behind your own home team?

Ian is spot in about this defense being the right fit. Schiano own this, not Sheridan.

  11. Eastsidebuc Says:

LOL!!! Rockstar has 6yrs and Schiano only 2, but Schiano is on the hot seat??? I agree with Beck. Yeah your “Rockstar” has made some moves but the roster still has question marks. Other teams have had to deal with cap issues and the loss of draft picks and still manage to get in the playoffs and or win they’re division ie: Saint, Redskins. Yet this towns media insist on not holding the front office accountable. That is laughable. LMAO!!!!!

  12. Raphael Says:

Didn’t they just hire an assistant GM , capable of taking Dominiks job ?

  13. TrueBlue Says:

How is it that if the team ends the season ‘headed in the right direction’ it only helps Schiano’s case? Simple nonsense to fill air time. Joe’s right that Dom has filled the team with talent at key positions. It’s Schiano that must get something out of that talent.

  14. T in Orlando Says:

I think that for at least the duration of Schiano’s current contract, his and Dominick’s respective positions with the Bucs are tied together. I think if Schiano falters, the Glazers will not give Dominick another chance at bringing a head coach in. If the Glazers feel Dominick has to go, I would think they will give their new GM the opportunity to bring in his own HC.

  15. robert Says:

Dom has stacked this team and managed the cap VERY well. He’s good.

Schiano, as long as he has a winning record is good as well.

there’s one other person on this team who, anything short of a miraculous turn around, is toast. last weeks tuna. kaput. career backup.

  16. Buc'n Junkie Says:

^^^^^ so glad you didn’t say his name lol

  17. Biff Barker Says:

Ahem, Ro my altruistic pals, Rockstar has issues. We have a shaky QB which the HC and fans have not embraced. The DL he drafted has not met expectations either.
In addition, we have mortgaged the future to a degree with high priced FA’s and been forced to plug holes. The OL needed restocking last season,
Sorry, in the owners eyes, it’s playoffs and fans in the seats. Now.

This isn’t even a story. Comeback mid-season and then we can talk.

  20. Buc1987 Says:

Maybe we can get Bruce Allen back. ha ha ha j/k

Alllllllllll aboooooooooooard ha ha ha ha ha I I I I

  21. Dreambig Says:

Ok, I’ll bite on this silly off season topic. After six years at the helm, Dominic will have to be held accountable if things collapse. Having said that, I think the Bucs have too much talent for this not to be a breakout year. Why? Because Dominic has been doing a very good job acquireing the right staff and players to put us in a place where a breakout year is possible. If the Bucs finish with 10+ wins both will be safe.

  22. j.a. Says:

And who will be playing right guard in 2073?
I predict, with absolutely no information to go on, the head coach, who hasn’t been born yet, will lose his job in 2073 if the right doesn’t produce.
What a waste of time talking about something that hasn’t happened yet?

  23. AmbushBuc Says:

“Maybe we can get Bruce Allen back. ha ha ha j/k”

Bruce Allen’s team was in the playoffs last year. Ask the Redskins if they’d like to trade him for Dominik and Freeman and then you’ll really get some laughs.

  24. tonytwocents Says:

Our team looks top 10 on paper….. and you have to credit Dom for that. Dom signs studs. The hard part is Schiano’s. He needs to make it happen. Like Sun Tzu said, or was it 2Pac?, Schiano needs to assemble his men where they can maximize their talents.. oh wait! It was Tony Dungy that said that. to Derrick Brooks! it wasnt 2Pac! my bad!

  25. john Says:

diaz is so bad its almost shocking. he is a cool humble guy though

  26. PRBucFan Says:

    IMO

They are both safe this season barring an epic meltdown.
