Throwback Game Comes Early In 2013

July 9th, 2013

The only throwback game, where the Bucs honor the Creamsicle jerseys, won by the Bucs was Josh Freeman’s first NFL start against the Packers in 2009

Joe’s guessing many Bucs fans read the following on Joe’s Twitter feed earlier this morning, but for those who may have missed it, the Bucs announced the Throwback Game, where the team turns back the clock to wear Creamsicle orange, will be Sept. 29 against the Arizona Desert Rats.

The throwback game will be but one of many themed games for the Bucs this season, highlighted by Monday Night Football against the Dolphins, Nov. 11. That night, soon-to-be Pro Football Hall of Famer Warren Sapp will have his No. 99 retired during a halftime ceremony.

The throwback game gives Joe chills, and not for good reason. The Bucs have won but one throwback game, which ironically was Josh Freeman’s very first NFL start against the Green Bay Packers in 2009.

If the Bucs lose to the Desert Rats, Joe will be all for putting a halt to throwback games. On second thought, losing may be the best way to honor the Creamsicles.

“The Bucs have one but one throwback game”

    Typo police! 😉

  2. BIlly Bob Says:

I stay away from the throw back game.
Just to many bad memories. I wish they would stop using them creamcycle uniforms but I understand the economics behind it

  3. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I like them. Although I wouldn’t mind a hybrid game combining the two.

I think when Jfro 6-pak has a bad game, then he has to wear the throw-back jersey the next week.

  5. Mean D Says:

I wish they would throw out the throwback game. Those uniforms are silly.

  6. MegaDaveUK Says:

My mate was at that 2009 Green Bay game here in the UK – legendary

  7. Buc'n Junkie Says:

Well you would think with that bright creamsicle orange Freeman should have no problem with accuracy.

I’ve been hunting high and low for an orange jersey to wear to that game. Just missed out on a bid for a 99 creamsicle. Lost to someone who paid $13.50 for it, because I fell asleep. It took me about an hour to get over it. Talk about screaming mad. I like em because it does remind us fans just how crappy our teams used to be. The only orange jersey I’ve ever had was a Vinny one. That sucker is long gone though. Must’ve lost it in the 15 times or so I have moved from place to place. I have no idea where it went to. Probably gave it away to someone along the way.

This is their way of boosting sales to the AZ game. Every throwback game has had a large crowd so far. And AZ has just a regional fan base and should be a W for the Bucs.

You can get custom ones on nfl.com I think.

As an Old Fart, I reiterate that I like those urnge uni’s. Cards are a good opponent for the throwbacks as the first home win was against them.

  12. Illuminati Says:

    @BuccaneerBonzai

I like the idea of a hybrid uni.

Creamsicle jerseys and socks, pewter pants, split-design helmet with one side Bucco Bruce, one side Red Roger.

  13. Buc'n Junkie Says:

I have the orange on white #42 Ricky Bell! But it’s under wraps and has become a priceless family heirloom. lol

  14. MTM Says:

Those jerseys need to be put away permanently there nothing but bad luck. I cannot figure out why any Bucs fan would want to dredge up those old memories. Nostalgia my ass !

  15. scubog Says:

Although it was not easy being a Bucs fan in the beginning and the mid 80’s to mid 90’s; they weren’t all bad memories MTM. As Mike J mentioned; the first home win 17-7 against the St. Louis Cardinals (poster on my wall) 79 Worst to First (poster on my wall) season and 81 Division Championships were exciting as were several individual games and upsets. I typically wear my #43 Jerry Eckwood practice jersey to the Throw Back game. The orange and white might represent losing to some but it represents loyalty, devotion, hope and survival to me. Maybe it is one of those “you had to be there” things. I sure like the music selections better than the rap that gets played at the games now. They should dig up the “Here Come the Vacuums” commercial.

  16. Glen Says:

Bring back the orange. Get rid of the “pewter” sweat stained, drab, lame, vapid, pants…..

  17. AmbushBuc Says:

Love the old orange uni’s. I grew up watching the Bucs play in those. The current pewter pants make the players look like they’ve peed themselves.
