Gerald McCoy No. 2

May 24th, 2013

Bucs fans can debate over cold beers at their favorite watering hole who the most valuable Buccaneer is.

Not counting new arrivals such as Darrelle Revis and/or Dashon Goldson, one could easily make an argument for Vincent Jackson or Doug Martin or Carl Nicks, or even Lavonte David.

As far as defensive linemen go, Neil Hornsby, founder of Pro Football Focus, has determined that Bucs defensive tackle Gerald McCoy isn’t just a valuable member of the Bucs, but he is the second-most valuable defensive linemen in the NFL.

Not sure how Hornsby came up with the calculations for this honor, being a non-stat guy, Joe isn’t sure he wants to know.

Joe found it interesting Hornsby’s research shows GMC to be so valuable, yet how many Bucs fans were ready to run GMC out of town at this point last year, including loud radio voices?

Now “this Joe” remembers turning to the “other Joe” at about midseason last year saying, “if Gerald McCoy goes down, this team is screwed.”

That, my friends, is a valuable player.

GMC stays healthy the sky is the limit…..guy is a beast when he gets on the field….lol @ all the gmc haters !

  2. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Sometime in the next year or two McCoy will be widely considered the best DT in the NFL. Mark it down.

  3. TrueBlue Says:

Where are the McCoy bashers now? Probably hiding behind the Dominic haters. Cue up the stats on all the negatives – never mind the positives – or balance for that matter. They just get in the way of a good meme.

I always thought McCoy would be a good player, probably even go to a pro bowl or two. But this is love extraordinaire. Good to be a Bucs fan.

  4. Macabee Says:

We all grow in one way or another, even Joe is not using the goofy McCoy picture now!

  5. Raphael Says:

@ trueblue. And hiding behind the Freeman haters ….

  6. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

PFF also made a “top 101” list of NFL players for the 2012 season:

    https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2013/05/06/pffs-top-101-of-2012-the-full-list/

The Bucs that made the cut?

    20. Gerald McCoy
    27. Vincent Jackson
    82. Lavonte David
    88. Doug Martin

I thought it was pretty interesting. Goldson is not on the list and neither is Revis. (By the way, I don’t think Revis should be on *any* lists for the 2012 season, the guy barely played.)

  7. Drewski12 Says:

He isn’t More valuable than Jared Allen is to the Vikings or JJ Watt to the Texans…Love to give credit where its due but this is a little excessive…He played very well this season and played very well against the run…But, lets keep our composure, he IS an injury concern always…

  8. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

Also, Lavonte made that list over “stud” LB Luke Kuechly in Carolina who didn’t even make this list. Very interesting because you would think this list would be INCREDIBLY stats driven but Kuechly had more tackles than Lavonte and didn’t even make the list…

  9. IdahoBucsfan Says:

    Yep! Right again Joe!

  10. Brandon Says:

Did anybody actually read the stats that McCoy was #2 at?

It was total snaps. This is hardly newsworthy stuff.

McCoy simply had the 2nd most snaps played last season of all defensive linemen. All that means is that there was little depth behind him. I think he’d be a lot better if we could cut his snaps down by nearly 25% and keep him fresh.

    TrueBlue Says:

“Where are the McCoy bashers now?”

Oh theyre still here. Theyre just zeroing in their sights on Freeman. Haters gotta hate.

But still, as rediculous as the haters went on McCoy, I dont give a sht what this Neil Hornsby from Pro Football Whatever-the-fck ranks him as, I dont give a sht that McCoy made the top 100. Im just cautiously optimistic. But still, as far as the 2013 season, I cant wait like Im Bart Scott.

  12. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

    @Brandon

    I did.

Apparently you didn’t actually read anything past the first line or two on that page. It, most definitely, is NOT a ranking based on snaps. It simply lists the snaps. There are players down that list with much more snaps than Jared Allen or Gerald McCoy. The ranking was for the most efficient defensive lineman based on the snaps they were given. Essentially the percentage of times they impacted a play versus the number of snaps they took.

Can’t believe you jump on here and blast Joe for posting this without even actually reading through the link yourself.

  13. Capt. Tim Says:

No worries! If McCoy( and I Friggin love that he is being recognized as a great DT!) goes down, we’ll just start Wonder boy-Mike Glennon!!!

According to some of the Freeman haters, Glennon is the most gifted guy outta college since Jim Brown!!!

Lmao! As stupid as the McCoy bashers!!

  14. Drewski12 Says:

The pass rush snaps list McCoy #2…Not, overall production…He only had 4 sacks last year, minus the week#1 incompletion, Newton wasn’t ruled down in error..its true, he was great in durability and run stoppage but not #2 overall, the second graph is more accurate…

  15. Brandon Says:

    WestCoastBucsFan:

Learn to read, please. The list is called, “Defenders Ranked by 2012 Regular Season Pass Rush Snaps” and yet you somehow believe this provs he’s the 2nd best DL in the league? In front of JJ Watt?

All it did was tell us the exact number those players played, adding run snaps to pass rush snaps, combined with special teams snaps. For anybody to think this is a list that proves a player is great at anything, other than being on the field, is moronic.

According to the “Defenders Ranked by 2012 Regular Season Pass Rush Snaps” list, you think it means that the 4th best DL in the league is Ray McDonald, #8 is Will Smith, and #10 was Connor Barwin?

  16. Brandon Says:

    Drewski12:

It’s comforting to know that not all Buc fans have 2nd grade reading levels. I’m not sure how ANYBODY could mistake the list that clearly says Defenders Ranked by 2012 Regular Season Pass Rush Snaps and think it is a list of pass rush effectiveness but I suppose there are a lot of ignorant people out there.

  17. Drewski12 Says:

He has been injured for 2/3 years…He still has to prove his worth and he has the talent…time will tell, prove #2 status…

  18. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

“Finally, 2012 was the year we got to see McCoy on the field for an entire season and we were not left wanting. Our second-ranked defensive tackle, McCoy played better than his numbers would suggest, delivering plenty of pressure and penetration in the run game. A real every-down talent and it’s no surprise the Bucs’ defense looked a lot better with him on the field.

Best Performance: Week 14 versus Philadelphia, +7.3

Key Stat: His 53 quarterback disruptions were the third-most for all defensive tackles.”

  19. BucFan987 Says:

Word, Joe. It doesn’t matter the stat rankings. I texted my brother the same thing during mid-season.

  20. bucsfan2046 Says:

If I remember right weren’t both biceps injuries attributed to some sort of genetic issue and they can’t be torn again? If that’s true then all the talk about being injury prone should come to an end.

  21. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

I apologize, the article was about production and it was really about Jared Allen. Only the first graph on the page was about snaps taken. The rest was about production. Gerald McCoy IS the second rated defensive tackle, its just not mentioned on that page. I read through the link I posted above and mixed in the stuff I read there with what was said in that article.

Again, I read the article. It does not mention him being the number two overall defensive tackle there. It was on a separate page of the same site. I apologize for being critical and yes, if Joe is basing this article on the link he provided, it is only based on snaps and not very credible. I am guessing Joe must have read the same thing I did in the link above and perhaps referenced the wrong article on their site.

    Joe, maybe you can elaborate?

  22. Illuminati Says:

Pardon me, I’ve had a few after work Friday cocktails, so I might be reading it wrong. But the post that is linked to is mainly about Jared Allen, and only ranks McCoy #2 in total pass rush snaps by all defenders. So, this essentially means nothing.

Don’t get me wrong, I understand very well how valuable McCoy is. I’m just saying that the stats in that post are meaningless as far as trying to quantify McCoy’s production.

  23. Raphael Says:

Lmao. West coast destoyed. Brandon ……pretty clear

  24. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Brandon = Boom Roasted. Come back when there are less observant people here that you can bullsh-t more easily.

  25. FLBoyInDallas Says:

PFF has McCoy as their 20th ranked overall player and 2nd ranked DT. Try arguing with that.

  26. GenocideD Says:

Brandon is the coolest guy and he showed us.

  27. scubog Says:

Regardless of this web site’s observation or our interpretation of it; GMC certainly is not a “bust” as some classified him after the first few games of his career. He is a class player.

  28. Architek Says:

    I’m happy for McCoy

  29. Capt. Tim Says:

McCoys talent is as big as his personality. We are so lucky to such a great young man, who is so dedicated, – wearing the red and pewter

  30. bucsguy Says:

The same idiots that were hating on gmc and mike willy are hating on jfree this year, its a joke people have no clue , these are the same clowns acting like the sky is falling because mike Bennett and his CAREER 13 sacks left. Some people are clueless .

  31. Raphael Says:

    @ bucsguy. Right on

  32. Brandon Says:

It’s funny that I was proven right and West Coast Bucs Fan apologized and there are still illiterate idiots on here that think I got roasted some how… Wow, stupidity reigns supreme.

WestCoast… it’s all good. Thank you for apologizing.

  33. Bobby Says:

McCoy’s stats are a lot like Revis. Try finding Revis on the first page or even the second page of top DB’s when it comes to ranked DB’s on NFL.com. He doesn’t get a ton of picks. Doesn’t have the most tackles (DB’s with a lot of tackles usually are on a team with a poor run defense)

It’s the unheralded things that Revis and McCoy do so well. They don’t throw toward Revis’ side of the field because they know he is the best defender. Same with McCoy. McCoy redirects so many plays and disrupts so many plays that he doesn’t pile up the stats that he should but I think this year because of our improved pass D you will see McCoy with a lot more sacks. He came close so many times last year but the QB was able to get rid of the ball. Very few coverage sacks last year. This year will be different.

  34. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Brandon, you are a complete and utter moron do you realize that? Learn some basic reading comprehension skills before saying another damn word you annoying little sh-t.

The PFF link WestCoast posted above CLEARLY states that McCoy is the 20th ranked OVERALL PLAYER and 2nd RANKED DT, NOT BASED ON JUST SNAPS BUT BASED ON ALL OF THEIR CRITERIA. Get it?

Yes, Joe’s link was based on snaps but so what? It’s clear that PFF has McCoy ranked 20th overall and 2nd as a DT on other pages of their website. Whether or not Joe posted that is irrelevant because we as commenters can bring other information to the table to prove or disprove ridiculous assertions such as yours about McCoy. GMC is clearly one of the premier DT’s in the NFL and is widely considered so by anyone with any credibility whatsoever (a group you don’t belong to).

  35. Brandon Says:

    FLBoyInDallas:

You are a freaking idiot. West Coast apologized because he was wrong. Meaning I was right all along. Telling me that I need to learn basic reading comprehension is like telling an NFL QB he needs to learn to throw the ball. Fifty percent of my job is teaching reading comprehension and I do my job damn well. I’m a professional when it comes to reading comprehension, whereas you, on the other hand, are a professional jack ass.

This is the link that Joe posted: https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2013/05/24/neils-nfl-daily-may-24-2013/ and that is the link in question and my comments were related precisely at the link in question. You’re wrong, you’re stupid, and apparently it bothers you so much that you think somehow you can bully me demanding me not to say another word further proving how stupid you are.

Facts are facts and the facts are that the link in question DOES NOT rank McCoy as the #2 DT. Other facts are is that 1) you are an idiot 2) you were kicked out of Florida because you’re an inbred pervert that was caught trying to bang your sister and 3) you moved to Dallas to be closer to cattle because you heard cattle was the next best thing.

Kiss my butt, you inbred, sister banging, cattle loving little weasel.

  36. Brandon Says:

And by the way, idiot, my original comment was based entirely off Joe’s link which didn’t say that McCoy was the 2nd most valuable DT in the league, Joe said McCoy, according to the link, was the second most valuable DEFENSIVE LINEMAN in the league.
