Bucs Pick A Quarterback!

April 26th, 2013

Bucs pick North Carolina State quarterback Mike Glennon in the third round.

Josh Freeman, you have just been put on notice. You are in the last year of your contract and your team just drafted a quarterback in the third round.

Mike Glennon, from the quarterback factory known as North Carolina State, just may be your next Bucs quarterback if Freeman struggles this season.

For a coach like Greg Schiano who loathes distractions, he just drafted his first major quarterback controversy.

Glennon threw for 4,031 yards and 31 touchdowns last season for an underwhelming (outside of a Florida State upset) Wolfpack team while tossing 17 interceptions.

Training camp just got a whole lot more interesting.

    This is just beyond AWFUL!!

  2. Kevin Says:

    boooo

  3. 1976Buc Says:

    WOW! Just Wow!

  4. @eric Says:

Gruden loved this guy, looks like the writing is on the wall Josh

  5. tamparob Says:

I like it. Drew Brees didn’t come to life until the Chargers got Rivers.. he was considered a bust until there was some competition.

  6. amarti190711 Says:

    Why!!!????

  7. Rickster Says:

Not even a matt Barkley? Nassib?

  8. bucobruce Says:

I love this guy! I think he could be another TOM BRADY, in time.

  9. Timmer4444 Says:

    Heads spinning

  10. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I hate this pick They could have gotten Landry Jones in the 4th.

Only thing I can guess is because the preferred DT got taken, they wanted to clear up a 4th for DT instead of reaching.

  11. fantasydoop Says:

I am NOT a fan of this pick at all.

    Glennon, firstly, over Nassib? Meh.

Secondly, we still have holes, and we’re taking a sketchy backup QB over potential starters?

  12. jpbuc Says:

I dont mind they took a QB but I like Nassib, Bray and Wilson more. The NFL Network guys like it, but questionable. They said he had a great arm but had major inconsistencies. Sound like someone we know?

  13. Matthew Says:

I trust the Buc’s scouts; we needed a real back up. Orlovsky is horrible. If they think he’s worth a 3rd round flier I’m fine with it.

  14. FLBoyInDallas Says:

LOL! Joe, I’m afraid you’re eating a little crow right about now. You’ve said more times than I can count that the Bucs weren’t going to bring in real competition for Freeman. A few of us, however, stuck to our guns saying yes they would. Personally I thought it would be Landry Jones and not Glennon, but the premise stands. Dominik and Schiano were telling the open truth when they said they wanted competition. Now maybe you guys will start to take them at their word from now on.

  15. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

bucobruce, you are usually pretty good about talent, so I’ll have to take your word on it.

  16. lightningbuc Says:

Can’t wait to hear the Dom lovers on this one

  17. Patrick Says:

    It’s John Lennon’s grandson!!

    Oops, I didn’t see that “G” there.

  18. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    This a Bucking waisted pick!!!

  19. Meh Says:

    Wow that’s a terrible pick.

  20. bucobruce Says:

I also still think Freeman will have a great season and lead the Bucs to a playoff win or 2 or 3or 4.

  21. Raphael Says:

Kaseem green and john Jenkins were sitting there ….wtf ?

  22. Buc-N-A Says:

what??? Could have had Damontre Moore.

  23. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    If anything take Terron Armstead

  24. Rrsrq Says:

    SMH

  25. Jacko101 Says:

    Wtf

  26. Raphael Says:

@flboy ….. Glendon is not competition for Freeman ….. He has about 3years of learning to do ..

  27. Stranger Says:

Nothing about this pick is good. We could have picked someone who would actually be on the field this year or next.

  28. Oldguy Says:

    Can he rush the passer?

  29. Matthew Says:

I love arm chair msg board draft experts claiming “terrible, wasted pick”; none of you jokers know. No one knows. Just because you read ESPN scouting reports and watch CFB on your couch doesn’t make you a talent evaluator. Let’s see Glennon in camp and on the field before we say Terrible or Great. It’s a 3rd round pick very few of these guys make big contributions; hopefully we got a solid guy.

  30. Ctymniak Says:

I guess we need a back up. I would rather had a DT.

  31. Andrew 1 Says:

WOOOOOOOW! did not see that one coming. I like the pick. think about it, who would you rather have as our backup QB Orlovsky or Glennon? Ill take Glennon all day.

  32. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Whiny bitches please go back under your rocks where you belong.

Real Bucs fans please stand up.

  33. Patrick Says:

We need help on the D LINE!!!

  34. NJBucsFan Says:

    Yuck

  35. Free's A Boob Says:

A QB with a brain! I hope Free is throwing up. Made my week

  36. Rrsrq Says:

That was a turrible pick, not because of talent, because DL depth is abysmal

  37. bucobruce Says:

Thanks, Buccaneerbonzia,I truly think he could be Tom Brady like.If you haven’t ever watched him play don’t comment.

  38. 4everBucsFan Says:

the timing of this pick sucked, we could have had him in the fourth round

  39. jpbuc Says:

Damotre Moore, Jessie Williams, and Terron Armstead was who I thought they might take. Dont be suprised if we trade back up into the third. What do we all know, we are sitting on our couches and have not watched a lick of tape. Hopefully Glennon is a stud.

  40. Andrew 1 Says:

Im going to be honest, I like this pick more than the Banks pick.

  41. AttaBoy Says:

Phil Simms and John Gruden rated him the number 1 QB for this year. Like this pick.

  42. Macabee Says:

Well the die is cast! Josh has got to win and so does Schiano! This may also say whose making the calls at One Buc. I can’t disagree with the pick, but it will add some controversy whether it’s intended or not. I hope this doesn’t become a distraction!

  43. Christopher Says:

Freeman is head & shoulders better than this guy. He was drafted to replace Orlovsky, & to take over for Freeman if Free just sh*ts the bed this year. In no way is he competition (& in my opinion, is awful).

  44. bob Says:

damm could have got this guy in 7th

  45. mvermulm Says:

I don’t mind the QB pick, even with it being Glennon (obviously no team is as infatuated with Barkley, Nassib, and Jones as te fans are). I do agree with most that I would have preferred a d-lineman there though.

  46. Robbie_G Says:

I PRAY they had a deal in hand to trade him to another team. We need D line help. If you are going to reach for a player with ” up side” Grab a d line man or even a OT. This just sucks

  47. Bucs Fan #238 Says:

Here’s to hoping the corn ball white dude takes Free’s spot!

    Love it!!!

Look, the guy has a beautiful spiral.

  48. Matt B Says:

QB doesn’t surprise me. It’s the one we took that’s the problem.

  49. DSZ Says:

Well…I guess we know how they are going to keep paying the Revis contract now. That pick should have been captioned “Hey Josh, no big money extension for you.”

  50. clafollett Says:

WOW! WTF? I agree Mike, AWFUL! We have way more pressing needs than to be wasting a 3rd round pick on a QB.

Joe, on a side note since I didn’t know how else to send this to you.

  51. Raphael Says:

Barkley is there and would have been better …….smh

  52. Jwayne Says:

Green, Moore, Jenkins, A slot WR(swope),Reed, Nassib , Barkley…..And we take Glennon. Unreal. With all the holes we have and we take Glennon in the 3rd, with Nassib and Barkley on the Board still btw! Good job Dom

  53. St Augustine Says:

I think I just heard Freeman say; “oooo, I’m scurrd!”

  54. schmuckaneer Says:

You know Sully had a say so in this pick. Glennon is the most “Eli-like” in the draft. Anyone who prefers Nassib bought into the media hype surrounding Buffalo.

  55. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Matthew

If as organization saying basically. ……We going all out 2 win a championship. You add pieces 2 roster that help you win right now. And you do that with your premium picks.

  56. jLM Says:

He could make a nice TE

  57. Brad Says:

Dominik back on hotseat and Schiano just joined him.

  58. brion Says:

check out this link that predicts the Jaguars draft the exact same two pics we just made! http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1619317-jaguars-may-take-johnthan-banks-in-second-and-mike-glennon-in-third

  59. Nate Says:

Mark Dominick might have lost his job with this pick. This pick is HORRIBLE!!! We have a need at DT and at linebacker… How about Moore from A&M, or LB jenkins from UF? To pick a QB in the 3rd round that will never see the field this season is such a waste with the needs of this team. I can’t believe I sat around this long to watch that pick!!! No “rockstar” pick in here.

  60. JonBuc Says:

    Whiff…

  61. Raphael Says:

Still waiting for competition for Free …… Lol !

    Glennon couldn’t carry Josh’s jock

  62. bucfanjeff Says:

    Awful.

  63. Patrick Says:

Drafting a QB in the 3rd when we’re WORST in the NFL in sacks, that just shows you that they’re not sold on Freeman.

  64. poolfixer70 Says:

I guess batted passes wont be a problem

  65. Andrew 1 Says:

Damn guys, give the guy a chance. last year I thought the Mark Barron pick was a terrible pick, but it all worked out for the best.

  66. Bucs Fan #238 Says:

The guy has a great arm and a beautiful spiral.

Barkley would have been a symbolic pick… but this guy actually has skills.

Reminds me of a taller Matt Ryan.

  67. Bird Says:

What?. He was available next round. Freeman is doing pushups right now. I don’t think we need to make him this nervous as a starting qb. Bucs better move back up in this round and get a quality need. Not happy but we’ll see

  68. Couch Fan Says:

We need better qb play just as bad as anything else on the team. Free has great potential but he has yet to put it all together. Im not evaluator of talent but neither of any of you. Lol, It’s hilarious to hear you all cry so much. Welcome to Tampe Mike!!

  69. Bucs Fan #238 Says:

    Screw it… pick Barkley tomorrow.

  70. feelthepewterpower Says:

We have other needs than QB, and we draft a QB?????? This is a trade bait qb, correct?? AHHHHH. You can’t tell me that QB was the best available!

  71. Jerry Says:

You dont draft QBs in the 3rd round to be career back-ups. This is competition for Josh.

  72. Stranger Says:

    @Jerry

And Freeman will beat that competition easily unless you’re going to Blount him as well.

  73. mark2001 Says:

Have to put some real competition out there for Josh.

You have to trust that Sherman knows QB’s….so let’s get it on.

This guys is really a couple of years away, likely, so the timing is good. If Josh fails, we could have the replacement in house. If Josh does well and the guy develops, you might get multiple picks for a talented young QB. The Packers did that for years, and Rodgers seemed to deal with it.

  74. Fuzzy Says:

Ain’t nobody got time for this sorry Buc’s draft!!!

  75. stevek Says:

    This is a great pick.

  76. Illuminati Says:

    This pick sucks.

We still have gaping holes at TE, SLB, OT, and DT and we take a developmental QB in the third? A guy that has the same flaws Freeman does, but with a weaker arm and less athletic ability?

  77. schmuckaneer Says:

Man reading this gives me understanding why people think Buc fans are dumb. Most of yall are idiots. “Mark Dominic back on the hot seat after that pick”. Please….lol.

  78. NY Bucs fan Says:

I hate this pick. Freeman likes it

  79. NY Bucs fan Says:

I hate this pick. Freeman likes it

  80. Vic66 Says:

Do I like this pick? HELL YA!

  81. andres Says:

@clafollett I saw that too, had to stop browsing here on my lame Android phone.

  82. 1976Buc Says:

I don’t mind the pick but in the 3rd round? A QB for backup and development is very much needed but not 3rd round with such a need for pass rush.

  83. Max Says:

there has never been a successful quarterback this tall in the nfl….they never work out. they always get drafted and amount to nothing.

he only has 2 seasons worth of experience and his completion percentage is below 60%……STINKER.

  84. JonBuc Says:

Jenkins or Moore was the pick…not Chrissy Simms look alike

  85. Max Says:

we could have got this guy in the 4th or 5th

  86. ShiverMETimbers Says:

For all you ignorant fans that go off of nothing but what Mr. “I got 1 out of 32 picks correct in the first round” Kiper watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VHsTL4tTaQ

  87. snook Says:

You people need to educate yourself on this kid. Solid player. Same QB coach as Matt Ryan in college. Pro ready. Unlike douchebag Freeman.

  88. mark2001 Says:

We had to get someone in here behind Josh, should he not pan out. If the guys at 1 Buc think he was the best option, so be it. If Josh doesn’t make it this year, we can’t afford a Brees, Rogers, Ryan quality FA, so what do you want to do….draft someone next year and hope and pray? It is a smart thing to do….inspite of what some of you may think. BTW…he was PR’s round 1-3 best bet QB, so he didn’t exactly come from out of the blue.

  89. stevek Says:

Calling it right now, Glennon turns into something good.

Freeman has every chance to keep his job too.

  90. Mike J Says:

Matthew , I have made better selections in prior draftsd than Dom has. Somebody go shoot him.

  91. Free's A Boob Says:

This is obviously Schiano’s pick, not Dominick’s. Schiano is rightly convinced Freeman is a Moron

  92. Joc Says:

Dom said we have no holes that we are drAfting for depth

  93. Mike J Says:

An indication that the administration thinks that there is about a 30% chance of Freeman’s becoming a good QB in 2013.

  94. mvermulm Says:

    Schmuckaneer,
    Thank you.

  95. snook Says:

Open your eyes Freeman lovers. Your boy sucks.

  96. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

Good for Dom, I liked what I saw of him at NC St.

  97. buccos fan Says:

I hate hate hate this pick! Let’s give Freeman more to think about hat had a different offensive coordinator and offensive scheme every year. This is the first year in the same system and then you bring in this Ass clown…. You could have at least drafted barkley if you were going to draft a QB. This is not what I want on the field for my hard earned money.

  98. DjoshFreeman Says:

    @max

Kerry Collins was 6’6…only a handful of 6’7 qbs have ever existed so your stat is irrelevant

  99. Stranger Says:

    @snook

    And Glennon is worse.

  100. st augustine Says:

Glennon had 31 touchdowns back to back, beat FSU, and actually improvises. At first reaction I didn’t like the pick, but after some research, reading, watching, etc..this pick doesn’t look as bad as i thought! I agree with Buc Fan 238 ~ he does remind me of a taller Matt Ryan.

  101. Bucs Fan #238 Says:

You morons just hate him because he doesn’t look sexy.

You have no idea the talent this guy has.

    Clowns.

  102. snook Says:

Good one, stranger. Go follow Freeman with his new team next.year as a backup.

  103. Tom Says:

    http://youtu.be/lGfQQPYx3dQ
    gruden camp with glennon.

  104. MTM Says:

What a reach! A QB you could have had in the 4th round. Defensive line please.

  105. BullDog Says:

No value to this pick what so ever. None.

  106. Biggun Says:

Was hoping for this pick….. Give this kid a chance you won’t be diappointed … In 1 or 2 years he’s our starter or excellent trade bait.

  107. Jacko101 Says:

F this pick at num 3

  108. marks Says:

I like the pick, the kid has size, a rocket arm, and plays smart and hard….Plus I’m tired of seeing bucs Qb’a get the ball knocked down at the line of scrimmage.

  109. Revisisland Says:

Who knows how this will work out but this guy was considered a first round draft pick 2 months ago, QB’s are boom or bust but a few mock drafts had him as a top tewn pick back in February…

  110. Stranger Says:

    @marks

Then tell Dotson to drive into his men properly and not draft a slightly taller but worse Freeman.

  111. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

lol…Glennon is not competition for Freeman. I think the problem with this pick is that there were more pressing needs, and now, we have to see lesser talent in those spots of need.

The $h## will hit the fan when the Bucs sign Ellis…

  112. NY Bucs fan Says:

Freeman lovers, if you are buc fan and you don’t like free you know nothing about bucs football. He is head and shoulders best QB we have had in years free would have been a top five pick in this draft.

  113. beric Says:

I like it. Orlovsky can’t realistically run the offense if Free gets hurt. This guy looks like a Clone / insurance policy.

  114. stevek Says:

Great thrower, good guy, and an excellent insurance policy.

I know with Glennon on Free’s coattails, we won’t suffer a 5+ game losing streak for the third year in a row.

  115. mo Says:

    Round 3 + QB rarely become starters…

    http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/fulldraft?type=position

waste of a pick in my opinion, i am all for competition but make it real, or use the 3rd round pick to add depth to a position that might contribute aka D-line/O-line – where is the competition for bowers, claiborne, dotson?

  116. marks Says:

    @ Stranger………..PLease..Freeman and him are night and day…do u own a television?

  117. Jbeachbuc Says:

Hmm… If Josh were to go down with an injury, I’d feel better about this kid comin’ in instead of “Crappy Danny”

We needed depth across the board, that includes QB, IMO

  118. BullDog Says:

Bonzai, exactly ! To waste a 3rd rd pick on a def. non contributor when other players at key needs would at least have a chance to compete for playing time this yr. Love em all you want but love’em from the 4th or better yet the 6th rd.

  119. bucrightoff Says:

49ers just did this with Kaep and Alex Smith, and Smith put together his best years. Not saying Glennon will be as good as Kaep, but a veteran isn’t the same kind of threat. Glennon can actually take Freemans job forever, not for a bit like a vet, which should hopefully push Free to the next level.

  120. brandon88 Says:

Worse pick ever lot more ave better them him aparentley no one knows what they are doing .

  121. gracelivin Says:

I don’t believe Glennon was drafted to unseat JF, but rater to be a quality backup, which he is. Throws a nice deep ball and good chalkboard understanding. You all who say should have waited, maybe but when the guy you want is on the board take him before some else does. Also all you whining little girls that cry because your pick isn’t taken, time for you to put on your big girl panties, and trust the team. Just last week everyone thought Dom was the best GM now you want his head, bunch of fickle fans.

  122. SirustheVirus Says:

Not bad. Don’t think we needed to get him in the 3rd.

  123. schmuckaneer Says:

Anyone saying Barkley would have been a better pick. Kindly find the exits and leave the Buccaneers. Glennon= the most underrated QB in the draft. Barkley= a crsppy version of Kellen Moore.

I like Freeman….but this guy could turn out to be even better. Over 60% comp, 7, 000+ yds and 62 TDs in two years….in the ACC.

  124. trubuc Says:

I like the pick. Former players/coaches like the kid a lot and the other teams arent clamouring over barkley or nassib so it tells me a lot about them as prospects.

Yes dline is a need as is te. But we have 4 more picks guys. Chill the f*** out.

I love freeman as much as any buc fan. But we need a quality back up or replacement if freeman fails this season.

  125. Stranger Says:

They are all pretty bad. This was a weak QB class and every QB pick but Geno was a reach. Only ones I have faith in are Geno and Nassib, and both require a minimum of a year’s worth of work.

  126. Cbell96825 Says:

We need more off weapons so will see

  127. buccos fan Says:

I think they have many more holes thank QB. Just a wasted pick in my opinion the last time I was this upset and confused about a pick was when they selected Gaines Adams r.I.p over All-day

  128. Architek Says:

I like this pick. Period. I like his film and we now have quality competition.

  129. Vic66 Says:

Freeman will not be moon walking this year. This kid will give him a run for his money. All Freeman has to do to keep his job is to step up and put his big boy pull ups on. Time to fish or cut bait( used the G rated on this time).

If you doubt this guy, take time to look at this URL . Sorry phone will not do hyperlinks.
    http://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=related&v=FNNzGGcPIqI

May the best man win the job!

  130. Cannuckbuc Says:

    I hate this pick !!!

  131. SailorJerry Says:

What a tragic waste of the 3rd Rd Pick when we have so many other needs on the team. D Moore DE and Greene OLB would have been better picks. UGH!!!

  132. Paul Says:

A Schiano pick. He tried to recruit him to Rutgers. This guy can throw the bomb, so he might catch on. Good pick I think.

  133. snook Says:

90% of the people bashing this pick have no clue who Glennon is. They only know Barkleymith and Manuel because that’s who’s on ESPN draft coverage.

Welcome to Tampa, Mike. We sure do need a QB. All we have is some clown drafted by Raheem Morris.

  134. SailorJerry Says:

I don’t see that any of the teams that drafted after Bucs in the 3rd round needed a QB. Why the rush to QB when we need more depth on D-Line? This guy easily could have been available for Bucs in the 4th round. We have two picks in the 4th and could have bundled one with a later pick to move up if he is such a catch

  135. LUVMYBUCS Says:

After asking around. I didn’t realize the kid’s offensive line was that damn bad.

Andrew Luck, ELi, and Payton speak highly of the kid( Since he was a counselor at the Manning Passing Academy.

He’s a Boom or Bust pick that has a lot of upside. I guess your right—-Joe the measurable’s are indeed a big deal this year. I just saw Matt Scott as better prospect.

Plus with the future cap issues with and Penn, Joseph and Zuttah being possible 2014 cap causalities.

I figured maybe OLT Terron Armstead would be a great pick.(Apparently Saints did 2)

But there still some great prospects out there.
