Why Carl Nicks Really Loves Doug Martin

September 11th, 2012

Let Joe go on the record, one day there’s going to be a huge scandal surrounding a NFL player somehow doing something inappropriate to affect a game because he wanted to influence his fantasy football team or league.

Joe’s always thought that, but was reminded last night when the loquacious Carl Nicks spoke on Total Access on WDAE-AM 620. Nicks shared his addiction to fantasy football, how he competes with his dad, and how Doug Martin is on his fantasy team.

It seems Nicks clearly bought in to Greg Schiano’s “run the football” philosophy.

As he did months ago, Nicks compared Martin to a better version of Pierre Thomas, his old teammate in New Orleans.

I think you have an interesting point about players and fantasy football. It is largely seen as simply good fun, but many individuals put money on winning it all. Knowing athlete’s competitive nature and deep pockets, I wouldn’t put it past some of them to put big money on it.

Sounds like Joe has a very good idea for an in-depth journalistic piece 🙂

    Joe,

How are tickets looking for the redskins game, and other home games.

The more I hear about nicks the more I like him, he seems very honest and a hard worker. If he has Doug Martin on his team then hopefully he is playing fantasy football for big money he has a direct influence on wether or not he does well. Maybe every bucs offensive lineman should have Doug Martin on the fantasy team and be required to play for big money. Just kidding but this could only be a good thing unless he drops him. Depending on when his draft was it would be interesting if he knew already how many carries Martin would get vs Blount.

RGIII vs bucs should be a great game it will test the run defense staying home and in the lanes and the safeties with the deep throws he likes. But thats not for a few games giants are the next BIG test. A true test of how the bucs play vs a quality opponent that has had tape and time to prepare. Go Bucs

Hey, here’s an opportunity for someone to teach me something. I always wondered something.

Why does a team not just use a big pounding fullback at the start of a game to wear out the defense quickly, and then run a smaller, faster guy after they are worn out?

It always seemed to me that would result in more open holes and a defensive line too tired to stop a quick guy.

I think we’ll win that game. I suspect the Bucs will be good at home this year. RGIII will have a few games under his belt…which will give the Bucs film on him.

@ Dutch Slamming a FB in the A gap over and over would be drive killers. DT’s and LB’s are too big and too fast for that game of attrition to work.

  8. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

Well…I realize it would kill drives at first. But it seems to me the payoff would come later in the game.

  9. Chris FWC Says:

@ Dutch…it works in HS football. Not in the NFL. What FB would last all season getting carries like that? Game planning would be easy.

  10. McSid Says:

@ Dutch this will tire out the D but not usually pick up first downs. And if you are loosing 21 – 0 it’s hard to run the ball and win.
