Redskins 24, Bucs 22

September 30th, 2012

Sloppy tackling, a manhandling by the Skins’ running game, and plenty of stupid penalties were enough to sink the Bucs today.

Josh Freeman came alive in the second half, letting it fly to Vincent Jackson (100 yards), Mike Williams (115 yards) and Tiquan Underwood (39 yards), and Connor Barth continued to be the best damn field goal kicker in football.

But it wasn’t enough.

While there are positives for Bucs fans out of this one, Joe’s not taking a load of them to bed

This is not a great Redskins football team. And the Bucs couldn’t finish — again!

The Skins were 1-for-10 on third down. How often does a team do that and still win?

Make no mistake. This was a gargantuan loss for the Bucs, who now head to the bye week at 1-3. The New Schiano Order took a step backwards today.

    The New Schiano Order!

    Ugh…..

  3. Oahubuc Says:

ARemember when Freeman could play in the 4th quarter and that was basically what he had going for him? Now he’s lost that. Bust.

  4. Sadfan Says:

    What a pathetic, sad loss

  5. OptimisTroll Says:

Your picture seems to show the redskins grounding the quarterbacks head in the turf. Seems like unnecessary roughness to me. Thanks regular refs – you really deserve to be back.

  6. SensibleBuc Says:

But in all seriousness, everybody on JBF picked us to have a losing record this year and we’re just being proven correct.

We do some stuff ok, some stuff crappy and some stuff very well (the kicking game lol). As long as we keep getting better each week and Free doesn’t completely crap the bed for the rest of the year I can deal with the losing. 6-10 here we come!

  7. BucNeckid Says:

    One – Dash – Three
Thought after winning the Panther game we would be 2 and 2 going into the bye.
This was a “W” for the Bucs to take and they gave it up.
The game was not as close as the score.
Redskins left at least six points on the field due to two easy field goal misses.
Bucs Needed a drive to SEAL the game at the end and could have with a first down.
    But could not.
This loss is going to hurt over the next two weeks.

  8. st augustine Says:

does freeman play well in the 4th qtr because other teams at that time play to not lose? i think it was like that during our 10 game win season. just asking.

  9. raphael Says:

    Prevent defense…prvents winning..

Have Freeman tthrow downfield in the 1st qtr…..

*repeatedly smashing my head n table*

  10. SensibleBuc Says:

Lavonte David dropped 14 tackles and 3 TFLs on the Skins tonight…we’ve got a new Double Nickel boys!

  11. BucNeckid Says:

The results are not there yet
but The New Schiano Order just needs horses and some time
Dungy’s results were not immediate either

  12. gotbbucs Says:

They open it up for Freeman to get back into the game, and then when it really matters, they reel him back in to milk the clock ball. I knew as soon as Barth made that field goal that we were going to lose. There is absolutely no excuse for this crap anymore. We’ve f@cking seen what this offense can do when the play callers aren’t out thinking themselves. Sometimes you just have to let football players play the style that they are built for and Freeman isn’t built for this dink and dunk bull sh!t.
I’ve had enough man, I can’t take too many more of these over managed game plans.

  13. J-VilleBuc Says:

The game was an improvement from last week offensively speaking. This game hurt to watch them get so close. I am really getting tired of both Mike Sullivan and Josh Freeman. Mike Sullivan for his bad 3rd in 1 and not running it up the gut with Martin,Blount,Ware,Smith,Lorig or mabey use your QB sneak it. I’m pretty sure we QB sneak it on 3rd and 4th down will get the damn yard. Josh Freeman for not changing the damn call on 3rd in 1 to the QB sneak and take that S#%t. That’s what leaders do. Don’t get me wrong outside of his 2 interceptions he played good. Some bad call, but overall good. Still would like to see Blount more. Defense played gooed until the very last drive for Washington. Mason!!! Biggers!!! You got to make those interceptions!!!! Offense you got to score 7. For the most part I like the direction were going. I mean really I don’t think anyone had us down to win any of those games let alone be close.

  14. OptimisTroll Says:

    I can’t wait until the 2013 season.

  15. FLBoyInDallas Says:

I thought these guys would go 7-9 by winning three games out of the first eight and then four of their final eight. Still looks possible as long as they can get the offense opened up before the fourth quarter. Josh seems to thrive when they open it up but he wilts when it’s too conservative and overly restricting.

  16. Patrick Says:

We need a quarterback who knows how to play the entire game. Our defense gave our offense several chances today……i’m sorry.

  17. BamBamBuc Says:

Oahu – What do you expect Freeman to do? He led the comeback, got us in position for the go ahead FG… He can’t play defense and stop the other team from getting a FG.

I think the worst part of this whole thing is the ridiculous penalty for Unnecessary Roughness on the hit on RGIII when we had them pinned back. Horrible call, he was a runner and he’s not down til he touches the ground. They wouldn’t call that if it were a RB, and in that situation RGIII was a RB. Yeah, the Skins missed 3 FGs, but we could have made a game of this much earlier if not for that stupid call by the “real” refs.

  18. BucNeckid Says:

    Raphael

    Ditto
and i think that this is the biggest point of frustration.
We brought V-Jax in to “Throw it down the Field”
He has led the NFL in long plays from scrimmage and all we get is this dump and crossing pattern crap.
STretch the field, be unpredictable, get the 8th man out of the box
That us mere amateurs are hoping for

  19. MR.T Says:

Once again a tale of two halves. They need to put together a complete game offensively which they haven’t done. Plus to let them move the ball so easily on that last drive for the winning FG was poor defense. Hopefully after the bye they can get it together

  20. Horice Says:

Doesnt look like we will even win more than last year.. At least we can say they didn’t quit (sarcasm)! I call 3-12

  21. Patrick Says:

This team should be 4-0 right now.

Dallas: Freeman couldn’t drive us at all.

Giants: Freeman was invisible the entire 2nd half.

Redskins: Freeman doesn’t wake up of course until the 4th quarter.

Freeman has been the main reason for our losses. If he was in 2010 form, we’d be 4-0.

  22. SensibleBuc Says:

    @Horice

You calling for us to tie a game? 🙂

  23. SensibleBuc Says:

    @Horice

You calling for us to tie a game? 🙂

  24. ryan Says:

Nice job Sullivan. Let’s start blitzing on the final drive. Maybe if we had an average blitz it might work but our blitz schemes might be the worst in football. Looks high school-ish.

  25. Macabee Says:

I would have loved to have won this game especially with the way we lost it. But we need more horsepower and our coaches are learning too! So my glass half full is the excellent draft position we get next year!

  26. SensibleBuc Says:

    @ FLBoyInDallas

I think the conservative playcalling is Schiano’s M.O. It’s here to stay unless we go down by more than 3 scores. I’d like us to take more shots but I think Schiano want to possess the ball because he knows our defense is not actually very good so he wants to keep them off the field.

  27. Architek Says:

Why is no one talking about the incompletion that stopped the clock and saved the Redskins a timeout? Yes Freeman stinks and from now on I’m referring to him as Jason Campbell…

  28. McBuc Says:

They need to open Freeman up like they did in the second half. This may not be a great Skins team, but the Bucs are not a great team right now either. The Skins move the ball well. This Bucs effort was too litle to late. I was happy to see blount, and I hoipe to see more of him. I just can not figure out why the offense comes out looking good, than falls apart and wakes back up again late. It baffles me. I also though SHiano was going to clean up all these penalties! At least the second half was exciting, and they are not getting blown out. I see improvement from last year, but I have to agree with Joe…A win would have went a long way for these Bucs. I hope we are watching a team like Dungy’s first year, and it will all start clicking soon.

  29. SensibleBuc Says:

    @Ryan

I really didn’t mind the blitzing. How many times have you seen a defense play prevent D only to have the QB pick dink and dunk all the way down the field for the win. This just in: Our secondary is not very good. We have the worst secondary in the league. With that in mind would do you rather drop 8 and cover for 5-6 seconds or blitz and get a sack/tipped ball/pick?

  30. Macabee Says:

I’m no coach, but I would never go into a prevent defense against a Cam Newton, Mike Vick, or dare I say RGIII! They must be defeated at the LOS!

  31. BucNeckid Says:

The New Schiano Order = a LONG BYE WEEK
Penalties and lack of discipline will Be beaten out of them

  32. Bricen Says:

At least I feel like we’re the best 1-3 team.

  33. Zach Says:

    Joe,

Please look into the dead-ball false start the Redskins had under 60 seconds.

I was under the impression that there is a mandatory 10 second run-off if a false start occurs…. that would have changed the entire complexion of the game, the Redskins would have been forced to burn their last timeout and attempt a much longer field goal with a kicker who was 0-3 on the day.

  34. Eric Says:

All that money spent and we still suck. Losing to a team with no wide receivers, rookie Rb,and a rookie QB and we still can’t close the deal. Not to mention they had the second worst secondary next to ours.
As for Freeman he is a good backup at best. Look at the stats and the wins vs. losses. I say we lose the rest and get Matt Barkley. If you look at the teams that are consistently in the playoffs they all have a great qb who puts up 300yds and a couple Td’s per game not 1 out of four. Freeman will NEVER be one of them! I am tired of being disappointed weekly and I’m sure that’s why the games are blacked out.

  35. Eric Says:

Third moral victory in a row. But in the real world have lost 13 of last 14….

Wait till next year, as usual.

  36. snook Says:

    This team BLOWS.

There aren’t any positives. This team lost to a terrible team with a horrible secondary with a rookie QB and a RB drafted in the 6th round from some no name school in Florida. Nice play call on 3rd down. What a joke.

  37. ryan Says:

“With that in mind would do you rather drop 8 and cover for 5-6 seconds or blitz and get a sack/tipped ball/pick?”

When has this team even been close to getting a sack/tip ball or pick when blitzing a DB. If this team had just a little success this year on blitzing the DBs then fine but they arent even close to touching the QB by the time the ball is thrown.

  38. Eric Says:

If only our coaches had an Ask Madden button to pick theirs plays just like the video game…

  39. Hawaiian Buc Says:

It’s going to be a very long 2 weeks.

  40. SensibleBuc Says:

    @Ryan

As of last week we were 16th in sacks (7), 3rd in INTs (6), and 2nd in passes defended (30) in the NFL. I don’t have the blitz stats on hand but I’d say that the blitz is how this defense’s bread is buttered. It looks like we’re average at getting to the QB and above average at getting our hands on the ball most likely because of all the pressure we’re getting.

  41. Rican Says:

Anyone defending Free at this point is just sad haha. Free plays well towards the end of games when they are out of reach
So what? What’s the good in that, what do we have to show for it? Nothing

  42. BucsJuice Says:

step back!?!?!? take it easy joe. You should be trying to sway fans to go to the game not the opposite. The product is so much better than its been in 7 or 8 years.

  43. Rican Says:

And for the last damn time Freeman sucked in the first half because he sucked, not because he was chained down or he wasn’t “opened up”!!! Homer isn’t even the word anymore for some of you. Watch the damn game. The booing fans and analysts couldn’t have expressed better concern.

  44. SensibleBuc Says:

    @Rican

LOL! Stop it. You were about to have Free’s babies in the chat when he was gunning it in there in the 4th. I understand your disappointment but nobody should be giving up on Free yet…or calling for Dan Orlovsky *shudders*

  45. Eric Says:

The product is better than it has been in seven years?

Give that man a breathalyzer !

  46. bucsalltheway Says:

E.j biggers and lavonte David should be excused for there heart and effort…..go bucs!!!! We’ll get better don’t panic everybody…losing sucks but change doesn’t happen over night. Roscoe parish did a good job no fumbles pretty solid fielding. At least we’re not getting blown out like last year I’m just sayin….

  47. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Rican,

I’m not defending Free, but the game wasn’t out of reach. Hello, we took the lead with less than 2 minutes remaining. This game proves to me without a doubt that it is all between his ears. When he has confidence, he can be very good. However, he gets rattled way too easy. That’s not a good thing for anyone, but it’s horrible for a QB. He goes into these ridiculous funks, where he seems to have no clue what he’s doing out there. It seemed like the light went on a little today, but I’m not all that optimistic that it will continue. I do, however, feel a little better about him since it happened at the end of the game. Technically, he did what he is supposed to do, the defense failed at the end.

  48. Gunner Eleven Says:

It’s over. For the remainder of the season, this is what we have in front of us. 1) a top 10 pick in the 2013 draft 2) free agents (S, CB, OT) 3) New offensive coordinator 3) New Uniforms (Glazer’s need to get creative to sell tickets)

Hey, we’re losing games close. But how long until the wheels completely fall off. Unless these Bucs learn how to beat an opponent into submission, this is going to get old.

There was a story on JoeBucsFan in the offseason that criticized the Schiano approach of run the ball, play defense, control the clock football. Ultimately, it doesn’t win football games in today’s NFL. We need an offense that can score on every possession.

  49. Deminion Says:

I just thought tht screen play to underwood was conservative u go for the TD but I hve no prob with the team think the team is way better then last yr snd those who are callin for a new QB kill yur self and fair-weather fans get a clue

  50. Jamaal Says:

You guys worry to much we played a great team today. And we took a heart breaking loss. But jump off Freeman’s sack he played a good second half. It takes time man. But the play calling offensively and defensively is beyond me sometimes. It shows that our coaches are rookies. We need coverage drills this week because our secondary cant continue to get torched like they do and expect to win. We definitely need a fullback lorig is not good. When we have a good fullback we win. And Quincy black just isn’t a starter. But I think we will get better.

  51. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“There was a story on JoeBucsFan in the offseason that criticized the Schiano approach of run the ball, play defense, control the clock football. Ultimately, it doesn’t win football games in today’s NFL. We”

    ———–

It actually does work, IF you are able to run the ball, play defense, and control the clock. Our only problem is that we aren’t able to do those things, at least not at the same time.

  52. Rican Says:

@Sensible are you an idiot? Why would you suggest something that’s a conplete lie when all you have to do is look at the thread, in other words “the proof” to see that I did not say a single thing to suggest I was having “Free’s babies”. Lol your laughable
    @Hawaiian I hear ya.

  53. Gunner Eleven Says:

    @Hawaiian

    You are correct Sir!

  54. SensibleBuc Says:

  55. Patrick Says:

    Matt Barkley????

Do we want another Leinart or Sanchez?

  56. SensibleBuc Says:

You said all that then we lose and you went back to bashing Freeman. C’mon buddy you’re a closet Josh Freeman lover. Had we won you’d be right back on the bandwagon 🙂

  57. Rican Says:

Your a tool lolol none of those statement suggested in a fashion or form that I was “having Fred’s babies”. Because I asked him to make a believer our of me???

I can’t stand looking at him all the close ups with him shaking his head like everyone is wrong but him. Way to waste a timeout. About time you complete a pass.

We need to start playing to flipping win damnit. All that dumb ass conservative play calling at the end of the damn game. The WR screen did not work at all in this damn game, doesn’t that freaking register? Free homers will jump on his bandwagon, for me I need to see an entire game of play to gain confidence in him. But this playcalling is beyond me man. Dumb asses man

Again NOTHING here suggests I’m was having Free’s babies and even if we did win I would have never jumped on his “bandwagon”. Like I said previously ge needs to be more consistent for me to be confident in him.

  58. Buc Fan Says:

If after the bye they lose to a terrible Chiefs team and then the winless Saints with their interim interim head coach, then they might as well tank the rest of the season and draft either Barkley or Geno Smith.
    “Lay flat for Matt”
    “Give up for Geno”

  59. dmatt Says:

We must stop the excuses for Josh. He still look confused and plays timid. Thank Mike W for breaking up the int near the sidelines; it was the same type of pass picked off by Brent Grimes fr ATL in 2010 that caused us to lose. Every NFL rookie and 2nd yr QB is playing better than Josh. He plays too soft n has confusion n fear written all over his face. Offside 3 times is unacceptable for our D line; bad coaching n performance. J.F. seems to be content with field goals. Had he got us in the endzone the last drive, RGIII would have had to do the same. Win or lose, in my book, Connor Barth is our leader on offense.

  60. Sharkcoasttactical.com Says:

Schedule doesn’t get any better…4-12 is very real..dammit lord when?

  61. Hawaiian Buc Says:

We aren’t going 4-12 unless Freeman doesn’t improve, which I guess is a legit possibility. Even though losing like this sucks (arguably more than being blown out like last year), we are a play or two away from being 4-0.

  62. teacherman777 Says:
