Gerald McCoy Not Concerned About Injuries

August 17th, 2012

Bucs defensive tackle Gerald McCoy is a happy guy these days. Happy to be playing.

In his first two seasons in the NFL, GMC has missed 13 games. That’s bad for him and bad for the Bucs as the Bucs have won just three games the past two seasons when GMC was not in the starting lineup.

In the eyes of many Bucs fans, GMC is the new Barrett Ruud, the favorite player to hate. It seems Bucs fans always have to have a player to hate.

Even GMC knows he has to stay healthy for the Bucs to turn things around this season, that’s why he is not worried about getting injured because GMC explains, it is out of his hands, so the Associated Press quoted GMC.

”I truly believe if I was supposed to be injured, I was supposed to be injured so there’s not really anything I could do different,” he said. ”I know each offseason I prepare harder and harder for the upcoming seasons because I know I’m already two steps back. I have to prepare that much harder so I don’t miss a beat, and I think I did that.”

Bucs coach Greg Schiano is satisfied with what little he has seen of the former Oklahoma All-American.

”I think he’s got some elite ability,” Schiano said, ”but it’s important for everybody to stay healthy. If he can’t stay healthy, he can’t play. He’s had a bad stretch, a bad run. I’m hoping that’s all behind him because he’s a key to our defense. “

This will be a critical year for GMC, and the Bucs. History shows the Bucs play well with GMC in the lineup. NFL insiders rave about GMC’s talent and moves.

But for some Bucs fans, it just isn’t — and won’t be — enough. GMC is the target of hate.

Joe please don’t compare gmc to ruud. And don’t day bucs fans hate McCoy because I don’t think they do. Some think he’s a bust some think he’s just had a bad run of injuries but We’ve all seen his ability to make plays and help this defense, ruud just wasn’t a downhill MLB and IMO wasn’t worthy of the starting nod on sundays

  2. the_buc_realist Says:

i look at the teams that we did beat with GMC, I see the colts, vikings, and it is not like he had monster games either. I really hope that Coach Cox can turn this guy into a football player.

  3. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

I understand McCoy’s perspective from a spiritual standpoint…but saying he was meant to be injured will not score him any points with the haters.

  4. Tbuc Says:

When you get paid so much for such little production the dis like and frustration by fans if justified. Dude needs to stay healthy or he will be another bust drafted by Dominik.

  5. BamBamBuc Says:

Realist – you left out he Falcons game, so they weren’t all pansy teams we beat with GMC in the game. Before you say he had “no stats” in the Falcons game, I hope you actually watched it rather than just look at a stat sheet. Although Clayborn gets the sack, you can clearly see in the replay of the sack on the video highlight of that play that GMC forced pressure up the middle, Ryan had no where to go, and GMC almost had the sack himself there. The Colts game may not have impressed you (yeah, I know, I’ve heard all about the backup lineman and QB) but he did have pretty good stats. Three tackles for loss and a sack are pretty good, no matter who is in front of you. I could dig further, but it’s futile with people that have their minds made up.

  6. Macabee Says:

If I could be so forward as to interpret Gerald’s words that there is a master plan for him and it is fait accompli – his injuries are all a part of that plan.

One could infer that the master of that plan is trying to tell Gerald that he should be lifting motors down at the foundry instead of playing in the NFL!

  7. Architek Says:

Stop coddling this grown man with these excuses for why he is not living up to his salary.

  8. Canadabuc Says:

Ruud…..played better and more often then Glass McCoy

  9. SoonerinTampa Says:

I certain hope all the haters return to joe’s site and eat crow when McCoy has great year…if he has a great year. None of us know what this season holds, but I sure hope the internet assissins return. It’s easy to talk smack sitting behind your keyboard in your underwear in mom’s basement.

McCoy is paid a great salary and he needs to stay healthy and produce…bottom line. I predict he will.

  10. Teddy Says:

Wow. I’m always amazed by some of the ignorant comments. GMC’s role is to blow things up, and even though he may not get the credit with the sack, it’s obvious to anyone who pays attention how much better defense the team plays when he is in there. If he can play through his injuries this year and get in 16 games, the defense will be so much improved, but Schiano will get credit for it instead of GMC, and the hating will continue unless GMC registers double-digit sacks.

People, if you want to hate a player who doesn’t make a difference, hate on Quincy Black. Now THAT was a Dominik mistake.

  11. Luther Says:

^^^ What Teddy said. I’m expecting great things from GMC this year.

  12. RachelWatson'sthong Says:

Of course he’s not worried. “Checks in the bank”, I believe someone once said.

  13. ScottyinFat Antonio Says:

Joe….what about the Donald Penn situation? Could it be that the coaches are not as enamored with him as alot of Bucs fans are?

  14. Buc Me in the Goat Azz Says:

How does one really “stay healthy” in the game of football?

Are their guidlines to “staying healthy”?

He is an interior d-line man going up against guys who have the strength to hurt him and roll his ankles and twist his knees and shoulders.

Those o-line man are STRONG as bears. Benching 500 lbs for them is common. Imaging trying to get around a professional lineman who also has the upper body strength to rip you apart.

GMC is right. The last thing he needs to worry about… is “staying healthy”.

    That is a meaningless request.

  15. thomas 2.2 Says:

I love Gerald the personality. He seems to be a nice, sweet, spiritual and generous man – loving, devoted father.

I have just been ultra-disappointed in him as a player, considering his gifts and the investment this franchise made in him.

I blame rah-dom mostly for his failure thus far: it was idiotic to draft him and before practice 1 call him the face of the franchise and the next warren sapp etc. Make him earn it first, whenever you hand something like that to a player before it is earned it handicaps their development.

Parcells and Bellichick learned this early which is why they are tough on rooks.

What pisses me and others off about Gerald, isn’t Gerald, it is the propaganda and spin? If Gerald goes statless, the team loses badly, there is no pressure on the QB but Gerald completes the game uninjured – you can bet your last dollar that there will be some Gerald was disruptive article or discussion on sports radio the next day.

I have never seen anything like it. Make him earn your praise, not on twitter, not through the media, not through hype, not through practice and not through the pre-season: THROUGH DOMINATING REGULAR SEASON GAMES.

  16. thomas 2.2 Says:

btw: there i no comparison between Gerald and Ruud.

Ruud was undersized, over-achieving 2nd rounder who was very productive (at or near the league lead in tackles on mutliple occasions) who was not a fierce hitter and the fanatics that didnt understand the defensive gap responsibilities thought that downfied tackles were his fault (instead of him covering a D Lineman who was out of his gap).

Gerald is a gifted athlete, #3 overall who has done nothing in 2 years but collect huge paychecks and tweet yet he remains the sweetheart of the propaganda machine.

  17. Canadabuc Says:

^^^^^ Well said Thomas 2.2. So far McCoy is a bust.

  18. BigMacAttack Says:

The mound has been toppled and the hater ants are swarming, with fangs drawn and venom dripping. There are 31 other teams and approximately 1500 other players to easily hate on and these so called Buc Fan idiots pick GMC.

God forbid any of you morons ever sustain an injury or get hit by a car. Why not just support your team and their players? You have no control over who they are. When they’re here support them, when they’re gone hate away. Sheeze, what a bunch of crybaby losers. I can’t wait to go to the game tonight.

    Go Bucs!!!

  19. David Says:

GMC has shown me he can be dominant. The HATERS out there are ignorant. They seem to think he should have 3 sacks a game or something. Whatever.

Unfortunately the haters are to the point where they will never see enough out of him.

  20. Canadabuc Says:

I support my Bucs and have for 15 years….I am truly excited for this season. The fact that I choose what players I like and dislike makes me a fan.I was excited about McCoy as many Bucs fans were 2 years ago. At this point in time McCoy has not delivered. I would love for McCoy to blow up this year and develop into the player we anticipated. The “realist” in me would be happy if he makes it thru the year without getting injured.
Questioning what players we have on the team doesn’t make me any less or more of a Buc fan than you. So get off your Soapbox.

  21. OAR Says:

You haters/fans who choose to dis-like their teams players, ever think that maybe if McCoy doesn’t get hurt he would have excelled his game and made more of an impact? Obviously, not! I swear some of you, especially Thomass, come across as hoping he got hurt so you can bitch and moan about Dominik and his picks. Injuries occur! Its friggin football! Ever heard of $h!t happens?
BTW Canada glad you have liked our Bucs for 15 years, I’m going on 36 myself! And, not once have I ever thought I was a fan because of the players I liked or disliked?

  22. Canadabuc Says:

People seem to forget that “some of us” fans are not cheering for McCoy to fail. We have faced the reality that McCoy has been paid extremely well and has not delivered. This does not make “us” HATERS. Football is a business. GO BUCS!!

  23. OAR Says:

We shouldn’t have drafted McCoy? Thanks for making my point above even more spot on! I know you know there was no way we were going to draft Suh! No way were the Lions trading. Get over it!

  24. OAR Says:

Missed my point, I guess? Hard to deliver when your injured and not on the field.
Besides it cracks me up how fast “some fans” call a player a bust. Especially, one that hasnt had the opportunitiy to show his full worth cause of an injury!

  25. Canadabuc Says:

I’m a fan of Buc football for life… win or lose I watch and cheer for every game. McCoy has not delivered on the investment.

  26. Canadabuc Says:

If he is injury prone it makes him a bad investment for a football team.
Some players never get injured…..some battle them their whole careers. At some point you have to cut the cord to free up cap space for players that can stay healthy and play in games.

  27. BucFan20 Says:

Well Thomass, here is another idiotic thing. To do the same with Freeman. Call him the face of the franchise. Pay attention to the game last night? Hear what they said about him? NO more excuses for Freeman!!

After last weeks game you could not find anything to bitch about Blount because he made you look stupid. McCoy did his job. Hell you had nothing to say about Martin and his great moves and TD. You have been beating his drum all offseason. You had nothing to say about that because it was not something to bitch about? You went into hiding for 4 day with the other haters until the Do your job article was written. Well go back into hiding until McCoy or Blount Screws up will you! Or if they sign Demps you can tell eveyone what a bad Dom signing that was.

  28. OAR Says:

    “If” he’s injury prone?
“If” palm trees and sand were beer and wings, we’d be set for life in Tampa!

“At some point you have to cut the cord to free up cap space for players that can stay healthy and play in games”
Sounds like you’ve got the the scissors and sutures ready as we speak?

  29. Bucnjim Says:

It’s not so much hate (even for Thomas) It’s more about disappointment! This team has been lacking leadership and that one dominate force that can change the course of a game. The Bucs tried to sell us on Ruud as the leader of the defense and team captain. Nothing against Ruud; he was an average player. The fact is though he was no game changer nor was he a leader. The same goes for GMC. If you are not a leader or a game changer then the fan base will be extremely dissappointed.

  30. Bucnjim Says:

The jury is still out on GMC, but the masses were correct that Ruud was not the future of this team.

  31. Canadabuc Says:

“If” he’s injury prone? (So far he is)

“If” palm trees and sand were beer and wings, we’d be set for life in Tampa! (We have all 4 so I say we are)

“At some point you have to cut the cord to free up cap space for players that can stay healthy and play in games”
Sounds like you’ve got the the scissors and sutures ready as we speak?
(One more season of injury and the team will be forced to move on)

For the sake of McCoy and the Bucs I hope he stays healthy and plays well.

  32. Miguel Grande Says:

We will watch what he does tonight, last week he was very weak. He made one tackle and completely whiffed on 14 other plays. If being disruptive means occupying one blocker, then he was very effective.

The Little General should be pleased because he did get a penalty for lining up off sides.

He made no QB pressures, blew up no plays and the Fins did not have to alter their blocking schemes to account for him. The QB’s cut the defense to ribbons and the only thing that stopped them was themselves.

Thomas is quite correct in that I have read 100 times this week how disruptive and dominating he was. Those are lies and propaganda. I don’t believe there is any room for that in sports.

  33. lurker Says:

    miguel pequeno,

you graded gmc like thomas does? lmao did you “two” share the same video? as i’ve said before, you keep saying “little general”, and yet it is you, as an ex-marathoner, who is probably 5’6″ and 98 lbs. i have had bigger morning contitutions bigger than you, as i’m sure schiano has.

wow, gmc is “overpaid” and “hasn’t earned” what he has received. sounds like half of america’s ceo’s and lawyers too. that won’t change.

also, remember that blount can’t catch nor pass block! (sarcasm)

  34. lurker Says:

ps if gmc gets injured it will be because of the 16×110 conditioning test, right miguel pequeno. so are you hoping he gets injured to prove your conspiracy theory, or does well?

  35. OAR Says:

(One more season of injury and the team will be forced to move on)
And I agree. I just get frustrated at some fans that sound like theyre ready to move on and not give him a real chance. Whether its due to injury or the terrible non-disiplined coaching he had.

  36. OAR Says:

I do believe Talibs Jockstrap(Grande’s self imposed nickname) and Thomass were twins separated at birth and do share some kind of videos.

  37. lurker Says:

architek, i’m sure there a people who feel you do not live up to your salary, too.

  38. lurker Says:

wtf, if 1 hater/troll states a negative, the others trolls regurgitate it. as i’ve said before, go start up and spread your negativity to each other like an std. some people come here to enjoy and support our team.

how many of you haters were even around before the dungy era?

  39. Buc Me in the Goat Azz Says:

There is NO point in blaming the players.

If they can’t cut it, they will eventually be cut.

There are only a few times when the teams can add significant impact players… that is Free Agency and the draft. Once the team is set, and pre-season rolls around, your core of starters are pretty much set.

GMC, Freeman et al are either going to pan out or not.

    Why worry?

Next year, during player evals, go ahead and dream about replacements.

But for the 2012 season… talking about busts is really, a waste of air.

And why would you want to villanize your own team’s player anyway???

  40. Wade Says:

    BUST! He’s Lame….

  41. the_buc_realist Says:

you should go and start up you and your group can go and cheer endlessly to the worst defense in buc history, while the real fans try and fix the team to make the bucs a respectable team.

the Glazers only fired the coaches and went into free agency because the true fans were on the edge of revolt!

  42. Canadabuc Says:

^^^^ Lmao at the_buc_realist. I would go to for many reason. Have you seen some the cheerleaders in the the nfl mmmmmmm!!!

  43. lurker Says:

do you know what a “fan” is…i think not. it is from fanatic…doh!
    not hater/troll or realist lmao

so by definition joebucsfan IS joebucscheerleader.

  44. lurker Says:

    foot-in-mouth disease strikes again

  45. Canadabuc Says:

It’s not that I’m against McCoy personally. The hype etc. has not been warranted because he hasn’t delivered. I hope he blows up this year and we get what we expected/deserved for a #3 pick. It’s hard for people to accept that “as of right now” he is a bust.

  46. the_buc_realist Says:

1.) One who expresses or promotes THOUGHTLESS praise,
2.)One who leads the cheering of spectators, as at a sports contest.

lol, you just got stone cold blocked like Roy Miller on Third down!

  47. lurker Says:

realist is lost in a fog…even the truth doesn’t set you free!

  48. lurker Says:

again take your negative diatribe away from this fans’ site. isn’t it time you kicked a kitten or puppy anyways?

  49. Bobby Says:

I’m sure every team site has it’s idiots but we seem to have our fair share right here at ‘ol JBF. I’ll bet they had similar ones at the Lion’s site saying that Stafford was a bust for the first two years he played and then they started to change their screen names and post how they always knew he’s be great….

  50. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

    I believe…

    …in a simple, positive, common-sense approach.

In other words…you stay positive until there is reason not to be positive.

GMC is healthy. Yes, he’s been injured the last two seasons. It’s unfortunate, but some of you act like he planned it that way. Don’t blame him about the money. Why?

    1. It is the way things were done at the time. Get over it. Everyone drafted that high got big contracts.

    2. It’s not your money. Yeah, that’s right, I said it. Ticket sales have been crap the last few years, yet the players still get paid. Why? Because the TV Revenue is where the money is made, not the ticket sales.

So stop whining about how much GMC cost the team. IT DOESN’T MATTER. If he does well and stays healthy, he’ll get an okay new deal. It won’t be nearly as huge as he gets now. If he doesn’t stay healthy, guess what? The Bucs can cut ties, do a much lower deal, trade him…whatever.

But in the meantime there is not a single Bucs fan that should be hoping for him to be injured just so they can claim they were “right” about him.

We should all be hoping and expecting the best. If it happens…well then there would be no reason to eat crow. If he does poorly or gets injured, we just smack our foreheads and move on. Period.

If being right matters so much, I pity some of you.

  51. Eric Says:

When the unwashed masses criticize a player its “hate”.

When the Joes do it then its reasonable commentary………

  52. lurker Says:

you listed a synonym. i gave the definition of fan, this site.

also, you said “…while the real fans try and fix the team to make the bucs a respectable team.”

    delusions of grandeur much?

but as i’ve stated before, my posts are as useless as yours.

  53. BigMacAttack Says:

Call it what you will but its negative energy. If you choose to live your life that way, more power to you, but you’re not going to drag me down with you. I’m northbound and down from Sarasota, and riding the mighty high, so for all you negative Nelly’s, just lick a big one and bask in your misery and sorrow.

    Go Freakin Bucs! Hell Yeah!!!

  54. lurker Says:

    enjoy the game bma!

  55. BamBamBuc Says:

I just wanna know how any “fan” (realist, homer, hater, troll, etc) has ANYTHING to do with “changing the team” or making it better unless they’re employed BY the team in a capacity such as GM or Coach? Whine all you want, but you will never change the team. And there will always be other “fans” of the team that still go to the games because they love the “team” not necessarily the individuals.
