Time To Applaud Mark Dominik, Team Glazer

March 14th, 2012

Sometimes, myths take on a life of their own.

Joe always found it amusing if not bewildering when Bucs fans would claim Team Glazer was cheap.

First, Joe knows cheap. He watched Bill Bidwill work his penny-pinching up close and very personal. Team Glazer is not Bidwill.

Second, Joe has yet to meet or learn of anyone who literally pays a couple of fellows (Chucky and Bruce Almighty, specifically) a lump sum of $20 million total to fish and play golf for a living.

Friends, that is not cheap. Not what Joe calls cheap.

So now, after fans all but stated they would storm One Buc Palace and “riot” for Team Glazer not playing Danny Snyder and run after free agents with an open checkbook, Team Glazer spoke before the local pen and mic club on the day Raheem Morris was jettisoned that money would not be an object when rebuilding the Bucs. These same Bucs fans, along with a couple of radio folks, stood by the same tired line that Team Glazer was cheap and Bucs rock star general manager was nothing more than a bag man for Team Glazer.

Well, Joe asks these same folks, now that Dominik coughed up the most cash for one player Wednesday, and seems to be on the verge of landing Carl Nicks among other players, how do you like Team Glazer and Dominik now that he has deviated from his goal of relying on the draft for building the team like the Packers and Steelers?

Rock n Roll rock star GM….GOOD JOB GLAZERS…

    *standing ovation*

  2. Brad Says:

Let’s get a couple more signings before you increase your man crush Joe. I’ll stand next to you once Nicks is signed.

  3. Joe Says:

    Brad:

Let’s get a couple more signings before you increase your man crush Joe.

Remember: this is real football, not fantasy football. But, the fans demanded fantasy football. Joe’s going to bet the stadium on Dale Mabry won’t be sold out for the home opener.

If Dominik continues on this drunken spending spree, prefer Stephen Tulloch over Carl Nicks. Current roster of linebackers may be worst in the NFL. Hell, even the Rams have James Laurinaitis.

  4. Meh Says:

I love to see this, but come on. They deserved the crap they got after having the cheapest roster for years. You don’t applaud a guy too much because he fell flat on his face just because he stands back up.

This is, without a doubt, a great free agency period for us. They deserve praise for it, but you don’t have a leg to stand on with “I told you so”‘s.

  5. Meh Says:

This isn’t a ‘drunken spending spree’. This is ‘finally using LAST YEARS cap space’.

  6. jb Says:

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!!

  7. flmike Says:

This was a planned move, they did what was allowed under the No Cap rules and didn’t spend, they hoarded cash and this is the pay-off, with VJax & Wright, and hopefully Nicks and a MLB we again become respectable.

  8. Nick Says:

Dom always said he signs free agents when he misses on the draft. Who was the miss and when will we stop missing on the draft? I was trying to think of a FA WR who was a huge impact on their new team the last few years. Couldn’t think of any besides Moss. And he had Brady. I’m just glad we got a true #1 and not a #2 wanting to be #1, like Alvin Harper

  9. the_buc_realist Says:

i will applaud them, for finally doing what they have not done the past 6 seasons, and that is to try to put a winning football on the field. I do not care if team Glazers take a swing and a miss, as long as they swing. This will not remove the memory of the last couple of Gruden years and the Raheem debacle. It should not have to take a full fan revolt for the team to spend up to the bottom of the cap.

  10. BigMacAttack Says:

This is all great news, and please keep buying players, but spending money now doesn’t change the fact they have been CHEAP over the last several years. Maybe they have finally seen the light and I hope it pans out.

  11. mark Says:

I have to give him credit regarding his FA moves so far. A+. And that coming from a guy that wanted Dom on the hotseat along with Rah during last years debacle.

I do wish that Rah. hadn’t been ground up without any FA help during the last two years. Maybe Dom and the Glazers saw him is a transition coach at best. I guess we will never know. But whether the meltdown last year, the new Coaches demands that we go for it in free Agency this year, or the eroding fan base, at least glad to see we are now making our move.

Joe, what do you think? One or all of the three reasons in the previous paragraphs, a combination of the three, or is there a different reason?

  12. Joe Says:

    mark:

    Joe, what do you think?

Such a post is already scheduled for a bit later this morning.

  13. ALSTOTTSMART! Says:

It’s a good start, after atrocious resignings of players like Clayton and Black. I’m glad the Glazers saw the writing on the wall, and finally are opening the purse strings.

We all know we won’t be able to really judge everyone for at least a season in TB.

I was pretty excited about Alvin Harper. I’m excited now too.

  14. Macabee Says:

Kudos to Mark Dominik. I won’t look back even though there’s plenty to see and say. Better late than never! I applaud the selections, and even more so the reponse time and immediacy given to the FA marketplace.

  15. raphael Says:

funny how the haters and buc bashers have been so quiet ! tim-lucky-thomas ? HOW DO YOU LIKE ME NOW! LMAO good song.

  16. Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Maybe Jackson is not the receiver Tampa thinks he is ? I just read this.

I thought Jackson benefited from Norv Turner’s system, the amount of threats in the Chargers’ passing game, and Philip Rivers’ accuracy/ability to throw the deep ball. I envision his stats dropping off with Tampa Bay.

  17. raphael Says:

I envision his stats improving….maybe he is better than expected .

  18. D Says:

    Jesus.

We get the premiere Free Agent and you people instantly scream WELL, HE’S NOT REALLY GOOD AT ALL.

You people WANT to be losers.

  19. Pete Dutcher Says:

I never believed the Bucs were cheap…just smart.

But to think one expensive player would ease naysayers minds is unrealistic. If the Bucs actually land Nicks, maybe then. But I can tell you right now, the Dom bashers will just switch to blaming him for not spending money on defense and landing a player like Finnegan or Lofton.

It ain’t over yet…if they get Nicks, offense will be set as far as the passing game. We can bring in Michael Bush or just about any RB to work next to Blount, even a undrafted free agent. I wouldn’t mind seeing Bradford at least trying out for Schiano as camp fodder unless he went elsewhere.

I disagree about needing a fiuness rb. Just get another grinder who can block. I believe in punishing a Defensive line by hitting them hard and often in the first half to wear them down quickly, even at the cost of a couple 3 & outs.

  20. 941Buc Says:

Great job so far. Do we have the money to land Nicks and either Tulloch or Lofton? That would be perfect and I would call it a day and wait for the draft.

  21. eric Says:

Glad to see they are finally admitting the error of their ways and returning to the winning formula of yesteryear. I guess a ten game losing streak was too much to take.

If i had to guess Id say the Glazers were a bit cash strapped over the past few years, but now have Manu under control and are going to go full steam ahead.

Delighted to see the change, as all bucs fan should. I suspect the fans will return in large numbers but may take a while longer to sooth the wounds which were inflicted by the mountain of BS previously piled at OBP.

  22. Capt.Tim Says:

Hip hip, Hurrah! Hip hip, Hurrah! Hip hip, Hurrah!

Cabt wait to see our new O- line in action!
And We have a huge, Fast WR! Josh will be able to air it out!
And Wright will be a improvement over all CBs( except Ronde), because he tackles!

Great work do far. This team will be much better!

    I’m excited!

  23. BucBuckeye Says:

@joe – the comparison that some Bucs fans make to Bidwell was intriguing…but us long-suffering fans remember a nastier, meaner, and downright thief of an owner by the name of High Culverhous.

Compared to Culverhouse the Glazers rank up there with Debartolo.

As I have said MANY times – the Glazers are good owners.

And as your article indicates, I for one, am standing and applauding.

Standing “O” for Team Glazer! Thanks for keeping your word and NOT moving, for making this team into a winner, and finally for going above and beyond to collect the coach and players for that little run to the Super-Freaking-Bowl!

This coaching search and free agent acquisition has been top-flight – I can’t wait for the draft!

  24. Luke Says:

We need lofton or somebody. Quincy Black is one of the worst people I’ve ever seen get paid as much as he does.
