Donovan McNabb?

February 3rd, 2012

Proven to be washed up as a starting quarterback, Donovan McNabb could be a valuable backup QB.

Bucs beat writer Woody Cummings, of The Tampa Tribune, invested plenty of ink into this theory with a call for the Bucs to take a long hard at one of Tampa Bay’s arch rivals 10+ years ago.

Freeman struggled in part last year because he had no one with regular game-day experience to turn to when his game went off the rails. McNabb would certainly give him that.

You can click on through above and read Cummings’ entire take.

Joe’s all in favor of the Bucs bringing in a veteran to back up, motivate, and educate Freeman. However, Joe’s not sure how the Bucs go about figuring out if McNabb really wants to be in that role versus starting. Joe remembers how Jeff Garcia left the Bucs and went to Oakland as an alleged backup and then shook up the entire team with a power play to start.

How ironic would it be if Ronde Barber left the Bucs and McNabb joined the team?

What a waste of ink.. Mcnabb wants to be a starter.. in his head he is not washed up.

  3. Fatmosh Says:

Seriously? I can think of 10 backup QBs I’d rather have…

  4. Nick Says:

He can teach Free how to puke all over himself when the game is on the line

  5. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Slow news day…cuz this will NEVER happen. Did you see him play the last two seasons? He’s absolutely horrible. At this stage he’s arguably one of the worse QB’s in the NFL.

    Rudy Carpenter > Donovan McNabb

  6. Jrock Says:

Dallas got it right. Looking forward to more realistic stories Joe, hopefully once the Super Bowl is over there will be more tantalizing Bucs news to report on.

  7. Jared Says:

Can we please stop posting stories of possible QB additions. We have our franchise QB, and we need to resign Johnson as our back up. The $3-4 million McNabb would want could be better spent on a CB or LB.

  8. Macabee Says:

This is not about McNabb, this is about Woody Cummings. First before Woody reports this, he should find out if the Bucs are one of the 3 unnamed teams that McNabb would be interested in playing for. A few days ago, Woody suggested that the Bucs are one of the teams that would be interested in Peyton Manning should he become a free agent. Peyton may still be injured and McNabb didn’t seem to mentor Christian Ponder or Joe Webb very well. I’m trying to give Woody the benefit of the doubt here, but I’m searching for the common sense in either recommendation!

  9. NunPuncher Says:

All McNabb does is puke and complain.

  10. Pete Dutcher Says:

McNabb is notorious for NOT being of any help to fellow QBs, Woody. Lord I wish we would get quality reporters in Tampa.

  11. gotbbucs Says:

    uh….no.

I’m getting an image in my head of the local Buccaneer beat writers all in the monkey exhibit at the zoo just flinging sh!t at the windows and seeing what sticks. Who’s next, Jeff George to be our backup QB? Maybe we can lure Ryan Leaf off his bar stool to come teach Freeman how to handle the media.

  12. jLM Says:

Shaun King could come and show him how to throw some Ducks.

  13. Chris FWC Says:

No way! He will show #5 how NOT to train and workout.

  14. bucfanjeff Says:

He wants to be a starter and it won’t happen here. Besides, he’s washed up and it’s showed with his last two teams.

  15. raphael Says:

jlm …shaun king can show him how to get fat, pick up fat white chicks and throw ducks

  16. adam ant Says:

I think it could work. We do need a veteran backup. Why not McNabb if he is willing to play that role (which he should since no one wants him as a starter at this point).

  17. Jared Says:

jlm, raphael … Shaun King can also teach Freeman how to host an absolutely unlistenable horrendous radio show as well.

  18. I_Miss#40 Says:

    Woody….lol

  19. OAR Says:

Does anybody else kinda laugh a little when they hear Woody Cummings? It sounds like a porn star name!

  20. Big Picture Guy Says:

The wrong #5 to mentor our #5. Woody, unto thee I say, “Boooooooooo!!!”

  21. Matt Says:

Lest we forget Mr Mcnabb has been to a Super Bowl played in multiple playoff games and can run a little as well as pass (ala Freeman). Great role model for him. If Free goes down, the game plan doesnt/will not have to change drastically if we sign this guy. Great signing all for the benefit of Free. Just because Philly fans didnt like him doesnt mean we shouldnt. Great hire for Free

  22. Matt Says:

We need a veteran to mentor No 5. He’s 23/24 needs someone to learn from who is a similar player. Hiring a pocket passer is pointless. This guy is perfect. Granted he hasnt got it done with the Redskins/Vikes but so what. He almost got himself a ring. Thats enough for me

  23. Bob Ross Says:

McNabb could be an excellent backup/mentor, if he is willing to accept that role.

  24. Steve From Oregon Says:

I think this would be fantastic addition if he is willing to come in and know that he is the backup, not question about it. In listening to his interviews, I believe he understands that his time of being a starting QB is over, he would a great asset to Josh.

  25. Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

Donovan and his Mother have a lifetime supply of Campbells Chunky Soup, and might get Josh Freeman fatter.
