Interviewing Wade Phillips A Fact-finding Mission

January 12th, 2012

Earlier this week, taking a break from having coaches hang up on him, Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune discussed all things Bucs while appearing on PrimeTime on WHBO-AM 1040 with co-hosts Ronnie Lane and Tom Krasniqi.

Among the many things Cummings had to say was that the Bucs’ interview with Wade Phillips is little more than a fact-finding mission under the guise of a job interview, and that in 2002 Richie McKay gave Team Glazer three names to replace Father Dungy. One name was Marvin Lewis and the other was Mike Mularkey, who was just hired by Jacksonville.

Team Glazer is “continuing to look at elder statesmen, guy who have been around the block with a few teams,” Cummings said. “It’s clear at this point they are going to get exactly the opposite that they had in Raheem Morris. They want a more experienced, more disciplined coach who is probably offensive-minded.

“Jerry Gray is a bright young mind. he is very impressive but they are leaning towards more of a veteran coach with an offensive mind.

“Wade Phillips, that is more of a fact-finding mission than a head coach interview.

“I have not heard of any college coaches” on the radar of Team Glazer.

Some of these coaches will need to step into OC/DC roles and restart their campaigns for HC role. Rah is a prime example. But he had to step be lower than DC and be a position coach. He will rise to DC in a few years, then challenge for HC role around 2020.

Billick seems to fit that mold, older, veteran, offensive mind – so why haven’t we talked to him yet?

This is a formality to satisfy the “Looney Rule”

If they are on fact finding missions, why would they not interview a number of college head coaches? Those are the ones they are most likely to be going up against or who might still be available next time they need a coach.

I understand that they’re doing their due diligence here, but it does seem odd that they are omitting a number of younger coaches who could very well end up being future head coaches or coordinators down the line.

I thought we intvwd Phillips on Friday ?? Is it actually today ??

If so today would be the last known scheduled intvw

ALSO i am thinking/HOPING that the Sherman talk is leverage to get Schotty in at the best price.

He is pretty much the only name to atleast create excitement … And the guy WIns .. The Glazers would have to be dumb business people to pass on someone that can win and bring some POP.

Otherwise go get ZIMMER, He will be good.
