Would “Marty” Save The Bucs?

December 21st, 2011

From the wailing of Bucs fans on sports radio and on message boards and on this very site, it seems Bucs fans are in near-unison they want embattled Bucs coach Raheem Morris rousted from the premises of One Buc Palace at the earliest possible moment.

But just because a new man will be stalking the sidelines of the football stadium on Dale Mabry Highway doesn’t mean the proverbial switch will be thrown and all of a sudden, a double-digit-win season will magically appear.

This is the gist of a Bucs fan’s query to the TBO Bucs Q & A feature recently.

Q: I’m a die-hard Bucs fan in the Atlanta area. We have a punishing running back in Blount that never seems to get to carry the ball. Is there a chance that we will fire Raheem, and hire Marty? I think we have the perfect team to play Marty Ball.

Jerome, Douglasville, GA

A: You’re right about Blount not getting the ball enough. That’s an issue that must be addressed. And yes, there is a chance Raheem will be fired and replaced, but I’m not sure which Marty you’re talking about. Marty Feldman, Marty Schottenheimer or Marty, the character that won Earnest Borgnine an Academy Award?

— Woody C.

May Joe kindly suggest to Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune, who answered this question, that the Bucs fan in Georgia could also have been referring to Marty Mornhinweg.

But yeah, if Marty Chokenheimer came here the days of this nonsense of giving Blount the ball a handful of times, only to see him sit on the bench from mid-second quarter on would be over.

But like a new coach may not automatically bring success, hiring Chokenheimer brings its demons as well. While Chokenheimer is fabulous at turning around teams, he’s also notorious for gagging away playoff games, in particular first-round playoff games.

And if losing first-round playoff games is the goal, then we are right back where we started with Team Glazer jettisoning Chucky.

“But they told me it was Igor!”

    Love the image!

If they fire Rah (and I still think that’s a big if) the new head coach will be someone we have never heard of before

Why in God’s name would a big name coach come here when the ownerships commitment to putting a winner on the field is in question?

  3. FLBoyInDallas Says:

There’s only two coaches I would be excited enough about to eagerly plan to spend money on the Bucs next season: Tom Clements or Rob Chudzinski, in that order. Both offensive guys with sterling reputations for developing QB’s. I believe I saw Joe give mention of support to hiring Clements in one of his recent comments, too.

Notice there’s no mention above in support of the ludicrous idea of keeping Morris and adding a new DC and/or OC. No thank you.

  4. Bucnjim Says:

I’d like to just get back to the playoffs. 2002 seems like a lifetime ago. Have we even won a playoff game since then?

@creamsicle “Why in God’s name would a big name coach come here when the ownerships commitment to putting a winner on the field is in question?”

For the same reason big name players leave good teams to go to bad teams sometimes – $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

  6. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

    lightning buc

When I say “commitment to putting a winner on the field” I mean the ownership has no interest in spending $$$$$$$$$ on the TB Bucs

  7. stevek Says:

Agree with the Banana Hammock, Glazers need to remember their financial status and get some $$$ in the team.

It is almost as if the Glazers just don’t care about Tampa Bay and their football team.

  8. Greig Says:

I’d take first round playoff knockouts over being an annual laughing stock, which we will be if Morris is allowed to keep his job.
Also Gruden has to actually make the playoffs to lose in the first round, 14 years as a HC and just 5 playoff years is not a good ratio, Marty at least gets teams there (13 times in 21 years)

  9. CC Says:

I’m just throwing this out there; what about Lane and Monte Kiffin as HC and DC

  10. CC Says:

@Bannanahammock When I say “commitment to putting a winner on the field” I mean the ownership has no interest in spending $$$$$$$$$ on the TB Bucs

Could not agree with you more. This is the biggest problem with this organization. It’s not going to get any better around here until our cheap ass owners decide to commit.

  11. BucfaninMI Says:

I’d take it! Playoffs? What are they?

  12. BucFan South Tampa Says:

    @BucfaninMI

Come on. You know what playoff is. Sean Jones, Quincy Black, and Geno Hayes do it all the time. Its when you are down 14-0, its third qtr, you ar eplaying a nothing team, and you take plays-off.

  13. flmike Says:

I would kill to have Marty Mornhinweg as our OC.

  14. Anthony Says:

Marty? LOL what an idiot this guy is.

  15. mainebuc Says:

Schottenheimer would be a solid choice for HC, imo.

  16. Capt.Tim Says:

Lol! When a perspective coach sees what they payed, and payed for Gruden, he’ll realize what the dummies around here don’t . The Glazers are commuted to winning at any cost. Won a superBowl a few years ago- want another.

The Glazers will win the bidding war and get Jeff Fisher. And he is a great fit here. Life is good. A few Free agents, a DC, OC, and GC. Good draft, and Freeman locked away with film all offseason- we are in the playoffs next year

    Believe it

  17. mainebuc Says:

Schottenheimer is coaching in arena league football or something, I’m sure he would be fairly inexpensive. Tom Clements or Bruce Arains would be solid picks as well.

  18. OAR Says:

    Grieg
Gruden was only a HC for 11 yrs, those 3 extra years you’re adding to him does make the playoff appearances percentage change from the actual 45% down to 35%.
BTW I dont think you can fairly compare Gruden to Marty’s total HC years. They do however have the same number of playoff appearances out of those 11 years.
Also how many SB rings does Marty have with those 4 different teams he coached?

  19. Anthony Says:

Marty is a loser. Plain and simple.

  20. OAR Says:

Oh Im sorry, he did win the 2011 UFL Championship as headcoach of the Destroyers. Dont know how he did it? What with thier grueling 4 game schedule.

  21. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Capt.Tim: we’ll know without a doubt what the Glazers are, or aren’t, committed to through this coming offseason’s moves. Their choice of coach, free agents, etc, will reveal the truth without argument. So will the size of their payroll for coaches and players. You can always tell a tree by its fruit…don’t listen to their words; watch their actions. We will all find out soon enough. I’m curious to see if they have the balls to step up and do what’s necessary to get this franchise back on track.

  22. Adam ant Says:

@Capt Tim – I would love to see Jeff Fisher come in here, as I have said before, but I am not sure the Glazers would be willing to get into a bidding war. If those changes are made and with a last place schedule next year, I do believe the playoffs are possible. The problem is how do we leap frog the Saints and/or Falcons??? Both very good teams. I think Carolina will remain a .500 or under team next year though.

  23. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

I would love to see Jeff Fisher come in here, as I have said before, but I am not sure the Glazers would be willing to get into a bidding war.

It’s not just their personal salary that is going to concern these coaches, but player payroll. Why would Fisher, Marty, Cowher come here when they are going to be handicapped by the lowest payroll in the league year after year?

Capt Tim is right….the Glazers have gone out and spent money before. I think they decided they were going to do it like the Steelers and the Packers and hopefully this year smacked them back into reality, but……

As Jean Paul Sartre said: You could have been this, you could have been that, but in the end you are nothing but your actions

Right now the Glazers are acting like cheapskates that have no problem neglecting the Buccaneers and their fans

  24. flmike Says:

    @CBH
I am with Capt Tim, I think the Glazers step up and pay a HC, they have before.

Next season is the last season they can “Underpay” come the 2013 season each team MUST spend at least 90% of the cap on player personnel, I think next season (2012) is about culling who we keep and pay long term.

  25. eric Says:

I think the world of Marty, he knows how to build a team. Not really his fault that Elway burned him twice in Championship games.

I consider getting into the playoffs a good achievement and would love to return rather than watching humiliating performances.

But, i am afraid he is a little long in the tooth now.

  26. knucknbuc Says:

Are you guys seriously considering Marty Schottenheimer here? Dude is like 70 years old. O yea oldest coach in the league youngest team in the league Im sure that would work out perfect. Let’s be realistic here that aint gonna happen. He hasn’t coached in the NFL since 2007. Uhm no ill pass, remember what happened when the redskins tried to hire Joe Gibbs back. Exactly.

  27. BucFan South Tampa Says:

Get the OC for the Patriots…anyone who can get away with yellng at Tom Brady has some cojones. Plus, he is getting fired anyway

  28. thib5599 Says:

somebody on another site suggested DC mike zimmer from the bengals. This got me thinking and I would really like it. Zimmer has been a very solid coordinator and does not take any BS as we all saw on the Bengals Hardknocks. Whats your guys take on him

  29. Bucbeliever Says:

    Rod Marinelli for DC? HC?

  30. B.D Says:

how about someone like Kyle shanahan or shottenheimers son? they have loads of n.f.l experience. and wouldnt need full control of personel decisions. (if you want to keep Dom) I m sure they could get a pretty good staff together

  31. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

BD did you really just suggest the Jets and the Redskins OC’s???? Really???

  32. Miracle Says:

I like the Mike Zimmer for HC thoughts. He has been a solid DC for many years and hasn’t had a shot at HC yet.

Then get the QB coach from Green Bay or Norv Turner as OC and we’d be solid.

  33. B.D Says:

    whos your choice ?

  34. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

    whos your choice?

I don’t really know right now…..If I’m trying to be realistic I’d take a look at Tom Clements, Bruce Arians (Pitt OC), Winston Moss (Pack DC)….maybe take a look at Vic Fangio (‘9ers DC).

I know I’m going to get lambasted for writing this, but at this point I’d almost like to see Rah brought back with new coordinators, given what the realistic options are out there. The wheels have completely fallen off this thing and that alone could make his return impossible, but I think we’d see Rah as an angry pit bull next year if he came back…..I doubt Aqib would be back (I’m taking Rah’s comment yesterday with a grain of salt), I think Winslow would be gone……and I think this team will be making some moves in FA.

Part of me thinks Rah is just the fall guy here for the owners and a GM that got a little bit too full of themselves. I don’t know…..given the options I’d probably bring Raheem back for one more season and one more off season

  35. Patrick Says:

What about Jimmy Johnson? Same age as Schottenhemer but he’s actually won a couple of Super Bowls!

  36. adam ant Says:

Jimmy Johnson will never coach again.

  37. FIRE THE CANNONS!! Says:

jimmy johnson and his boner pills.
