Olson Still In Love With Benn Reverse

December 4th, 2011
“Hey young fella, I’m going to draw this really cool play on your back.”

It’s 3rd-and-2 and the Bucs are driving in the red zone. They’re trailing 14-3, but it’s early in the second quarter and they’ve got momentum.

So what does Greg Olson call on this critical 3rd-and-2?

Olson looked deep into his playbook and pulled out the play that doesn’t work, the Arrelious Benn reverse.

This time that stunning play broke a new personal record with a 12-yard loss.

Joe’s first emotional thought after that play was that Olson deserves to fired on the spot for that call — with a mobile quarterback and a punishing running back available.

Of course, one play should never doom an offensive coordinator. But Joe’s got to seriously question the judgement of the call, especially with that critical down and distance.

Sadly, Joe suspects Bucs fans haven’t seen the last of that play.

LOL…well EVERY defense in the NFL LOVES our Benn end around. What about the draw play on 3rd and 1.

  2. Patrick Says:

    @Joe

I think Olsen should be fired. What about you?

  3. holymoly Says:

OMG !! Some of the worst football I have ever seen ! They couldn’t tackle , block , run the ball and damn sure couldn’t stop Newton . It is time for Morris to go the way of the dodo bird . If he is supposed to get his team ready to play each week , he SUCKS . Fire him and take 3rd and 2 reverse Olson with him .

  4. Fear The Glo Says:

Olson should start calling a double reverse instead because maybe 2 wrongs make a right.

  5. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

The pnly question would be…who would the interim head coach be….Jimmy Lake?

  6. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

I think it happens this week. Any more golden nuggets from Raheem’s presser?

  7. Lucas Jackson Says:

He should have been fired on the spot

  8. Patrick Says:

I think they’ll probably hire the equipment manager as their interim

  9. AtlBucsFan Says:

I hate that play and have said so in the past. Glad I didn’t see it. I would’ve need to get a new TV. I don’t understand the need for trickery. To me it means you have no clue how to beat the defense. With a battering ram like Blount and the running ability of JJ that was all he could think of?

  10. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Jimmy Lake as interim HC….AVP as OC

  11. Oahubuc Says:

I could not friggin BELIEVE I was actually seeing THAT PLAY! Wow!

  12. TheProsUseAdvoCare Says:

I think the Benndaround got us a first down once. But I think it might have lost just as many yards as it has gained.

  13. Mark Says:

I totally agree Rah Rah & Olsen should be fired this week, the only problem is who on this staff do they have to take their places?? I’d like to see Millard get a chance at DC but on the offensive side it’s a big question mark. Maybe they should go out and call Cowher or Fisher and have them come in now to evaluate the players on the team before the off-season

  14. Pete Dutcher Says:

No to fisher…I would love Cowher here.

Another option would be (shutter) Norv Turner.

Unless we can take a surefire step up, I say t\stick with Morris, fire Olsen and bring in a DC.

  15. admin Says:

    Joe here,

@ProsUseAdvocare — Benn’s last good run wasn’t a reverse, came in off the flank in front of the QB for a handoff.

  16. TheProsUseAdvoCare Says:

@admin I didn’t mean in the game. I meant since it’s inception. It has gotten a first down, I believe, once.

  17. Pete Dutcher Says:

Okay, I’ll say this…Raheem only has a year left on his contract. That means he is actaully in the year to be fired because the last thing the players need is a lame duck coach.

However, I think firing him now would be wrong. Wait till after the last game.

  18. Max Says:

[Sorry Max, unless you have photos or documented evidence, can’t throw those kind of accusations about a Bucs coordinator out there. Joe has zero way to confirm that accusation. — Joe]

  19. Brad Says:

Fire Olson now!!!!! He does that stupid play listed above and uses Blount for 11 carries…,? That’s just ridiculous. Not to mention after every big play we had on offense we self destructed time and time again and we settled for field goals. It doesnt matter who the QB is this guy sucks and has no clue how to capitalize on momentum.. He’s is own worse enemy. If Raheem has any chance of being here next year he must fire Olson now and hire a DC. Hell If Raheem won’t do it and Dominic wants to keep his job he needs to make the move.

  20. Patrick Says:

    What about Mike Sherman?

  21. Leighroy Says:

Spags and the Rams are in the same situation as Raheem. Josh McDaniels could be available as an OC if they clean house….

Cowher and Turner will never coach here. This job is beneath them, lets be honest. Fisher I could see maybe with him running the D and McDaniels running the Offense?

He could get his boy Blount back!!

  22. Joe Says:

    What about Mike Sherman?

    What about Dick Jauron?

  23. Max Says:

I’ll make sure to get a picture of olson next time he’s at blue martini

  24. Patrick Says:

How can you compare Dick Jauron to Sherman? Sherman was successful with GB.

  25. Anthony Says:

It is Raheem’s fault that Olson calls these plays. And it is Raheem’s fault that Arrelious is not that fast and that the offensive line can’t block for the end-around.

  26. Shields Says:

Couldn’t agree more Joe. Olsen’s play calling is horrible!! I can’t understand why we always seem to be in shotgun on 3rd&3, 3rd&4 just line up and run!! Been bugging me all season too it seems like Olsen telegraghs everything so bad, I swear about 80% of the snaps not in shotgun are runs and everything thing else is shotgun with a draw now and again. Always thought Olsen was horrible and needs to go I think we won last year in spite of him with Blount breaking tackles for big runs and Freeman scrambling to make a play! Got injuries on D but zero excuses for the Offense time to kick Olsen to the curb!

  27. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Isn’t there someone in the organization smart enough to point out to Olsen that the play never works. Do they watch film? From now on out, everytime we run that play I want Blount to go Boise State on Olsen. I have never in my life seen such stupidity as running the same damn play every game, which has yet to work even once.

Also, here’s a concept that he may have not learned: When you throw a screen pass to a WR, it is a lot easier to actually have blocking set up for him. Just a thought. Also, you could possibly watch what Carolina does (as well as GB) and run a fricking bootleg every now and then. Hell, even Gruden ran that! And on 3rd and 2, you could possibly attempt to run the ball every once in a while! If we are hugely successful throwing the ball I could maybe live with it, but hugely successful we are not. Run the damn ball! It might as well be 3rd and 10 on every 3rd down, because there is no threat of us running the ball (with the exception of our brilliant end around). I’m sure there is more to all of his playcalling than what I know, since I’m no football expert. If this is the case, I feel I deserve an explanation.

  28. Nick Says:

joe, hate to correct you. But olsen went with a wildcat Johnson / lumpy after a 6 yd rumble by blunt. they lost two yds. then came the reverse on 3rd and 4. 4th and 14 just like that. So he had 2 plays to screw it up. I was horrible. He sucks. A head coach is nothing without good coaches around them

Nick, per Joe’s live charting of the game, as well as the play-by-play record from ESPN, it was 3rd-and-2. –Joe

  29. Alex Says:

Its not a reverse unless it goes to the RB first, its an end around.

  30. passenger27 Says:

I am that last person that wants to see raheem go but these results leave no other options… but here’s an idea how about we look for something new instead of recycling some other teams trash..

  31. Nick Says:

Joe, was also trying to point out the fact that no matter what it was, Olsen screwed up twice. The wildcat run before that equally as bad, with madu or lumpkin with him. Especially after blounts six yards. Just mind boggling.

  32. Nick Says:

And people can forget about Andy Reid because he does the same crap with McCoy. Eight yard gain on first down run, then two passes and punt

  33. holymoly Says:

    Olsen sucks !

  34. Horice Says:

I remember talking about Olie on this site a few weeks ago when I used many Stevie Wonder references. Olie’s play calling for an offense with a veteran line is horrible. Fans keep saying we lack talent, not so! We refuse to utilize what we have effectively. When Blount is carrying the ball like a beast and we are 3rd and 4 or less, whey in the hell would you take him out of the game? Your threat is now sitting on thte side line, I’m sure defensive coordinators have a sigh of relief, and Monday’s film meeting must be more funny than a Mike Epps stand up. The opponent must think we have to be stupid to not use Blount at that moment. I remember when Dungy had a poor, poor OC. I believe it cost him his job. Rah had better learn from that because Olie WILL cost him his job. I expect slow progression from a young defense, but this offense could and should preform better even if Stevie Wonder was calling the plays… Lol!

    Greg Olsen is Turruble

  36. Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

“Have Blount go Boise State on him” LOL
That was too funny Hawaiian Buc:)
Jim Mora Jr commented on how Tampa’s lack of speed is causing teams to play 8 man fronts. IOW, we can’t run, because we can’t pass.
You try to play an 8 man front with the Steelers, and Wallace will burn you.

  37. Mainebuc Says:

That play has to be averaging around somewhere in the neighborhood of
-2 and -5 yards per attempt. It is pathetic that he keeps attempting it. Especially in a situation where the team loves to take Freeman out of the game and bring in Johnson. This guy is junk, fire him and bring in Tom Clements, Green Bay’s QB coach.

  38. Brain Says:

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
