Stylez White Waiting By A Quiet Phone

July 27th, 2011

The Bucs are gathering tomorrow to check in for training camp. The first practice is Friday. Some are already housed up in a prime downtown Tampa hotel.

But not all Bucs are in town. Defensive end Stylez White, who led the team with 4.5 sacks last season, is not in the Tampa Bay area, nor is he in Florida. Rather, White is in Ohio waiting. The free agent defensive end is waiting. Waiting for his phone to ring. Waiting for an offer.

White continues to wait on someone who wants him. The phone doesn’t ring.

@rwking75: Has the Bucs contacted you yet bout new contract?

@stylezwhite: U will know whn i know. Keep u posted playa

Joe thought, at worst, White would be in camp as a backup plan in case second round pick Da’Quan Bowers isn’t exactly 100 percent, but Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik seems to believe he is.

All the while, Stylez waits by the phone.

  1. Brandon Says:

He can’t be Da’Quan’s backup plan… remember? Stylez can’t/won’t play LDE. Which is about as useful as a guy that can ONLY play RT (Trueblood).

  2. GenocideD Says:

He’s not holding his breath. 4.5 sacks doesn’t cut it in this league. Out with the old and in with the knew. We’ve got Kyle Moore and Michael Bennett to fill in.

  3. Mauha Deeb Says:

I hope they sign him back. He can still play, but clearly he is better in a limited role(as his previous seasons have shown). I wonder if a large reason White is not being called because of his attitude and practice habits which Raheem clearly did not approve of. Maybe Raheem doesn’t want that to rub off on his new DL.

@Brandon “Stylez can’t/won’t play LDE. Which is about as useful as a guy that can ONLY play RT”
What about Adrian CLayborn solely playing RDE? Does that make him already useless?

  4. rob Says:

id say chances of him returning slim to none. Daquan Bowers took #91 according to bucs site

  5. Matt Says:

Stylez is still a very good backup rush-specialist at 20 plays per game. And it’s not like we’ve got tons of DE talent. Sign him for a couple million a year and maybe we’ll get another 5 sacks or so from him in a limited role.

  6. Foxworth Says:

He needs to shine on the feild the way he does off , I would be surprized if tampa makes him richer, too much talent availible . Hope he throws one more free party.thats he’s biggest hit !

  7. BucFan941 Says:

its sad later Mr white…maybe the UFL will call

  8. BOb Says:

@ matt he had 4.5 sacks last year as a full time de and you think he will get more than that in a backup role? His writing was on the wall after the second day of the draft. Goodbye “stylez”! Shoulda changed your work ethic instead of your name

  9. gotbbucs Says:

He can go ahead and keep his ass in Ohio for all I care. He’s nothing more than a side show that hates going to practice. People serious about their life don’t change thier name to a freaking Teen Wolf character.

Holder is claiming Ruud is gone:

I personally hope he’s as accurate on this as he was w/ Talib.

  11. Patrick Says:

    @GenocideD

Kyle Moore sucks dude, at least Stylez has GOTTEN a sack in his career.

  12. Oahubuc Says:

Hopefully the Saints, Falcons or Panthers call.

  13. Mauha Deeb Says:

@Bob Back when Stylez was known as Greg White, prior to the 2010 season, he played a limited role as a DE for the Bucs. Sacks = 8(2007), 5(2006), and 6.5(2009). He played his best when he played less. Perhaps going back to a limited role would be better suited for him. Some players just are made to be used as three down DEs.

  14. Macabee Says:

A case of too many too’s. Too old (32), Too Laid back (won’t practice), Too flashy (Stylez not Greg), Too few options (UFL is closed) Too bad (will not get a call), and he knows it too!!

  15. MOBucs Says:

    Macabee right on!

  16. derek Says:

im glad white isnt getting a call he needs to be brought back down to earth and realize he isnt better than anyone else

  17. Jampersands Says:

    I’m with Mauha Deeb.

The guy can rush, no doubt about it. People pay good money to situational pass rushers, he’s worth at least a low-ball contract and sporadic playing time.

But I hear those of you that worry about his poor work ethic being infectious to the rookies.

  18. HIRE GREG OLSON! Says:

Davin Joseph just tweeted that he “loves the Bucs’ new OLine Coach”

    Nice

  19. MOBucs Says:

Joseph is back! Loves the new O-Line coach!

  20. BOb Says:

When it comes to backups, I would rather have a backup that knows how to work hard. The coaches are the ones that need to teach them how to get their sacks. And they will over time.
I dont expect a lot from our top two collectively as rookie DEs dont usually experience great success. Whay they need to see from their peers is a great work ethic, not ” hey im gonna change my name so it can possibly make me more marketable” move it to the left with that $**t. With that being said I do think “stylez” will have a job. maybe with the bucs, maybe not.

  21. Captain Stagger Says:

    Clayborn
    Bowers
    Bennent
    Crowder
    McGee
    White
    Moore
    Johnson

    And maybe a FA? That’s 2-3 DE’s too many.

  22. k_bassuka Says:

We need to move on from guys like this, can he still play? No doubt about it, but not to the level that a young team needs him to. We might as well try younger players n hope we find gems like many other teams have.

  23. Dave Says:

    CAPT STAGGER

My guess is these are the guys:
    Clayborn
    Bowers
    Bennent
    Crowder

plus 2 more for camp but neither will be there for the season unless there is an injury. Due to age, I would say White is out. Due to onfield play I would say Moore is out…….. so who knows at this point.

They might even sign someone still, but I doubt it. If anything, I see them trying to sign a DT

  24. Captain Stagger Says:

Dave I agree 100% White and Moore were my two to cut. McGee crowder and Bennent will all stay….Johnson back to the PS.

  25. nick Says:

Time to fire up that old resume stylez g whizite. hope best buy is hiring again

  26. Patrick Says:

If we’re gonna let a DE go, let it be Moore. He’s literally done nothing since we drafted him.
