Caddy Might Come Cheap

July 29th, 2011

As Joe wonders whether the Bucs plan to take Cadillac Williams out to dinner, the market for the blocking icon seemed to take a nose dive yesterday.

Speedy free agent returner/third-down back Darren Sproles, also known for his blocking and receiving, signed with the Saints yesterday for what NOLA.com reported as only a four-year, $14 million deal with just $6 million guaranteed.

If that’s what 28-year-old Sproles snagged, then what’s Caddy worth?

Joe suspects the Bucs will let Cadillac test the market (if there is one) before buying him a plate of appetizers.

Joe would like to see Cadillac return, but with a veteran offensive line in place and Earnest Graham on the roster, the Bucs can’t be feeling any pressure.

I really wanted the m to offer Sproles something. As much as I like Caddy, maybe Snelling SHOULD BE the choice now.

  2. BOb Says:

Was there any doubt that he would come cheap?

  3. Dew Says:

I love Caddy but think we could do better with Bradshaw as our third down back. The Bucs seem to be moving at a snails pace finding talent to upgrade some areas.

  4. BtownBucsFan Says:

@ joe do u think the bucs resign hayward or rudd

  5. ARMY BUC Says:

its not about 3rd down ins about pass blocking and catching a pass in the back field. we need to keep him! he knows our play book and was great last year! He earned it!

  6. Dave Says:

    ARMY BUC

They kept Clayton around long past what they should have because he could block. I don’t think they should make the same mistake with a RB. It is not what you pay RBs and WRs for.

They want a blocker, stick Graham in there.

Caddy can’t run anymore, it is that simple. He moves alot but goes no-where. Like the guy, but time to move on.

Blount worked with Freeman in the offseason, hopefully he will be able to pick up blitzes alot better.
They really need a FAST RB to put out there sometimes. I wish huggins was 100% to see what he could do

Heyward, sure. Ruud? Joe has an inkling if Ruud agrees to a dirt cheap contract he may be back.

  8. ARMY BUC Says:

    Dave

I see what you saying. WE should have gone after Bush or Sprolls! Shoot we should have gone after Devine the kid out of Pitt i think , who was unsigned.

  9. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Well, Caddy seems to pass the one and only test that matters to Dominik……he was drafted by the Bucs

  10. DreadedBuc Says:

If Ruud comes back it will be with a franchise tag or a 2 year deal at the most.

  11. Bucbeliever Says:

Just when I thought we didn’t have to worry about another RB in NO, Sproles was signed…Defensive gameplan for NO rushing attack just got more complicated

    GO BUCS!

  12. Meh Says:

Caddy WILL be cheap, and we should keep him.

  13. Travis Says:

Tyrone McKenzie taking 1st team snaps @ MLB today. Bowers Taking 1st team snaps @ LDE, Per the Pewter Gang

  14. CharlieB Says:

If we pick up a RB I’m hoping for Vonta Leach. It’s hard to overstate the value of an exceptional blocking FB. Compare LaDanian Tomlinson’s numbers in the years with and without Lorenzo Neal. Leach is a big reason Arian Foster had the year he had.

  15. gotbbucs Says:

i see no reason why he wouldnt be brought back. you guys can piss and moan all you want about bradshaw, bush, and sproles all you want, but caddy did exactly what he was supposed to do last year. the noel devine love on here is comical, get real people.

  16. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

LOL…didnt Rudd do everything he was supposed to do last year too?

  17. RunningBuc Says:

I would like to see the Bucs target L. McClain the FB from Baltimore.
I’d rather get him as our third down back

  18. gotbbucs Says:

scotty, if getting rag dolled by everyone he came into contact with was his job, then the answer is yes.

  19. Intha727 Says:

Franchise tag for Ruud? You’re kidding, right?

  20. Dew Says:

@Travis. Where on the Pewter site did you read that Tyrone McKenzie was getting first team reps? I’m a member but can’t find it.

Also, what’s up with FA’s not being able to practice until Aug 4th? That sucks and also explains why Quincy Black isn’t playing MLB today if that is the plan,

  21. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

If you listen to Rah….Rudd did everything in the system he was supposed to do.

  22. thegregwitul Says:

It’s on twitter too, re: McKenzie getting first team reps. I think Stephen Holder tweeted about it an hour ago. I thought Mason Foster started the day at first team and then McKenzie rotated in, but I could be wrong about that.

  23. Matt Says:

@Dew: “That sucks and also explains why Quincy Black isn’t playing MLB today if that is the plan,”

Who from the Bucs EVER said that was the plan. They have repeatedly talked about Foster at MLB. It doesn’t make any sense.

  24. Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

I hope we keep the Caddy in Tampa. Cadillac provides a lot of intangibles, and is one of the top 3rd down backs in the league. As much as I also like Earnest Graham, I think Tampa should go with Caddy over him, if it comes down to that. In fact, if Tampa has no plans for Graham, it would be kind to release him, so he can catch on somewhere else.

  25. Dew Says:

@Matt. I read somewhere that the money they gave Black may indicate a plan to move him to MLB. Supposedly he knows that position.

  26. jarrett Says:

If sproles was that cheap we should of signed him, he is light years better than caddy.

  27. Bucnjim Says:

    Scotty,
Here is the best example I can possibly give you and then I’m done with Ruud forever.

Scotty’s girlfriend: How good is Scotty? Well he does what he’s supposed to. You mean he’s not great; he’s not the best you’ve ever had? No he does what he supposed to……LOL

I’m not real big on that type of response from people! I’m looking for a little more than that out of our defensive team leader.

  28. Dave Says:

DEW there has been talk about Black possibly in the MLB, but I am not sure where it started, it was not the Bucs though.

  29. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

LOL…good point Bucnjim. Hey…whats your take on Carlos Rogers (CB)from the Deadskins. He is on the market. Maybe with the right coach…he can be a GREAT alternative for us.

  30. jarrett Says:

i would love carlos rodgers, iwould also love kelly gregg or cullen jenkins cuz i do not think we can expect anything from brian price

  31. Shayne Says:

There is better options out there then Caddy. Hes not young anymore and he’s had 2 major surgeries.. We should go after a RB thats more explosive and can have an impact on our team for years to income, I only see Caddy having one more decent year left in him. Does anyone think Dom is going to sign any tier 2-3 free agents? I’m fine with wanting to build through the draft but atleast try to improve our team with all that money to spend.

  32. MVPFreeman Says:

MaGahee signed a 3 year deal worth $7.5mil and $3 million garunteed. Caddy’s market value MUST be lower than Magahee’s. Im guessing we re-sign Williams for a two-year $2 million dollar contract with $1.5mil garanteed, then subsequently park him in the garage for backup duty.

  33. MVPFreeman Says:

    McGahee* McGahee*

  34. Pete Dutcher Says:

I hope we keep Caddy, but not at the expense of not signing a better RB.

Whatever happens, once it’s done I’ll be supportive. In the meantime, I personally think Graham should get the boot. He might be playing the role of FB, but he’s not impressive at it.

Plus we have a couple players that can step into that role now. Graham is a ‘tweener.

  35. Patrick Says:

“Speedy free agent returner/third-down back Darren Sproles, also known for his blocking and receiving, signed with the Saints yesterday for what NOLA.com reported as only a four-year, $14 million deal with just $6 million guaranteed.”

If we re-sign Caddy for the same price or more, I’ll be pissed cause we could’ve had Sproles instead. He’s a playmaker and very fast. Love Caddy but he’s not the same anymore. Also, Sproles can block and that’s the only good thing Caddy can really do now. The reason I want him to stay here.
