“I Love To Trash Talk”

October 13th, 2010

The Bucs’ offensive linemen are a competitive bunch, so says Donald Penn.

No, Penn was not referring to competitive eating.

In the weight room, it’s Jeremy Trueblood and Jeremy Zuttah leading the way with an unwillingness to be outmuscled by teammates, Penn told a fan caller into the Total Access access show on WDAE-AM 620 Monday.

“”Trueblood is such a big competitor. He wants to lift the most out of everybody. And if you lift more than him, he will not let you hear the end of it,” Penn said. “Don’t get Zuttah involved because Zuttah thinks he’s the strongest person in the world. He’s the same way. …We hold each other to a high standard.”

Penn went on to heap more praise on Zuttah for his work ethic and subsequent success at center filling in for Jeff Faine in Cincinnati. ((Hmmm. Joe recalls a certain Web-only publication, behind the security blanket of paid content,  painting Zuttah as a lazy slug this summer.))

Penn went on to name his three toughest defensive ends in the league: Dwight Freeney, DeMarcus Ware and John Abraham.

But Penn, who said he’s “always talking to the other team” keeps his constantly running mouth shut around those guys.

“I love to trash talk because I feel it puts me in my zone. It loosens me up. It gets me going. It relaxes me, too, ” Penn said. “I love to talk trash, especially when the guy can’t do nothing about it. …Oh, no. I don’t talk trash to [Abraham]. I try to keep it cool. I pick and choose my battles.”

Joe can only imagine that as a proud instigator, Penn must have endured an incredible barrage of fat jokes last season. Goodness.

Penn went on to say the Bucs’ O-line has been preparing for the Saints and their complex blitz packages since the offseason. … He also said they did the same type of prep for the Steelers.

i trash talk to joe all the time…hes weak…lol

  2. bucfanjeff Says:

And as far as blitz pick-ups go, we did ok against the Steelers, whom are better than the Saints.

Joe, you have a big chip on your shoulder:

“((Hmmm. Joe recalls a certain Web-only publication, behind the security blanket of paid content, painting Zuttah as a lazy slug this summer.))”

Actually, the “certain Web-only publication” (isn’t that what JBF is?) reported that people inside the Bucs were “painting Zuttah as a lazy slug this summer”

Joe, you must be on the payroll of Zuttah’s agent. You are truly obsessed with the guy (and with the “certain Web-only publication” ). Joe, I trust you realize the obvious: benching Zuttah was against the Bucs best-interests. The Bucs were hoping he was as strong as his teammate says he thinks he is. 🙂

You should run a poll. Which is promoted more on JBF? Zuttah or the Blackout Tour.

  4. BamBamBuc Says:

I couldn’t care less if some Web-only publication paints him as a lazy slug this summer. What I want to know is “How does Donald Penn know he wasn’t a lazy slug this summer? He wasn’t with the team, remember?”

Actually, no, Joe doesn’t remember. Joe was under the impression Donald Penn showed up to training camp on time.

  6. OAR Says:

Ah the ole Jimbuc to Joe about Zuttah fetish continues!

  7. JimBuc Says:

I can’t figure out if Joe is more obsessed with Zuttah or with the other “web-only publication.” Neither one make sense to me, but I guess it makes sense to Joe. Something going on in the background.

  8. JimBuc Says:

How’s it going OAR? I am genuinely intrigued by Joe’s obsession, but I will let it go. Strange

  9. OAR Says:

    Jimbuc,
Eh, not to bad. Economy still sucks, hours cut at work, wife had to have surgery, but hey, my Bucs are winning! Strange
BTW no biggie! I just try and poke some fun.

    Joe here,

JimBuc – So it’s not interesting that Zuttah’s teammate, unsolicited, calls out Zuttah for being a weight room competitor and a work ethic guy, while a reported was out there that essentially contradicted that?

Why would Joe not bring that up?

And yes, of course, Web-only publications are glorious. This is 2010. Gosh, you’re so negative.

  11. JimBuc Says:

Joe, I guess that depends on your defintion of “essentially.” I don’t see the contradiction (obviously). I would have to look back at the PR article but I think the issue was strength and position. Zuttah gets pushed around AT GUARD. I think the report mentioned that the Bucs were hoping for him to come back stronger, but that he didn’t. That is why they brought in Vincent.

But, are you taking issue with the facts (because Zuttah is obviously a demoted GUARD now turned substitute center) or are you taking issue with the prior reporting? If it is the latter, you realize the Times reported the same thing?

That’s the part I cannot figure out. Are you defending Zuttah (why?) or skewering the competition?

  12. Capt.Tim Says:

Lol! I’m glad Zuttah is working hard! When ya get demoted to second string, and get called out for being a lazy Slug . . . Well, Geez, ya gotta do something!! Jus teasing Joe, don’t kick me!!I am getting a Lil worried about Joe’s well being, though. A not so svelte guy, who keeps picking on the 6’6″,350# left tackle of the Bucs- who by all accounts is a Monster!! Wow! That seems like an unhealthy idea!! Joe, guys that size eat things Joe sized during a normal feeding!!! Help the Poor Capt. Rest a Lil easier, pick on that new damn Punter we picked! Or go push Conner Barth in the face! But meybe Penn’s figure might not be the best thing on the Bucs roster ta poke fun at! I’m just saying!

  13. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Joe, PR was stating all offseason that Zuttah was walking around with a sense of entitlement, and that there were many withing One Buc Place that agreed. However, they also stated that he would be better suited to be a center. I’m not sure that’s exactly the same thing as calling him a “lazy slug”, but I do see where you are coming from. There’s a big difference between working enough to get by versus working your butt off to get much better. I like Donald Penn a whole lot, but I wouldn’t necessarily take his word on this issue. Remember now, he is the same one that said we were pushing around Pittsburgh’s offensive line all day! Perhaps he is not the best source for evaluating effort.

  14. admin Says:

    Joe here,

HawaiianBuc – Nice take. Joe’s not judging Penn’s comments either way, just sayin’ it’s interesting in light of PRs anonymous-source hammer job on Zuttah.

  15. BamBamBuc Says:

Penn wasn’t around during OTAs, when most of the comments about Zuttah were being made. Yes, he was in camp on time in August. I also don’t trust Penn’s word on this. I remember the comments from the Steelers game. I also don’t think he has been much of a workout warrior (unless Twinkie 12 packs count), so would think anyone that lifts more than that is a warrior.

  16. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Regardless, I just hope he works hard now, because we sure as hell need him to fill in well for Faine. I agree they did hammer him pretty good, hopefully that lit a fire under him a bit. I think he performed pretty well against Cincy.

  17. Capt.Tim Says:

He’s always looked good at Center. I’m not that worried!

  18. JimBuc Says:

PR’s and the Times anonymous “hammer” job, right Joe?

  19. JimBuc Says:

Not sure I get the beef Joe has:

    1. The anonymous source was right. See Vincent

    2. Without anonymous sources your whole industry would disapper Joe. (“Not saying that is a good thing, but it is the truth,” said a high ranking official with knowledge of the situation and another person who would only speak on the condition that we not revael his name since he was not authorized to dislose this information.)

    🙂

  20. admin Says:

    Joe here,

JimBuc-Joe’s not taking any of this lovely bait.

  21. JimBuc Says:

I have no idea what you are talking about Joe.

  22. Buc You Says:

Keep ignoring that dude Joe. For every comment is nothing but a whine for attention from the admin. Sad sad person to need so much attention from the admin.

  23. BigMacAttack Says:

Lightning just tied it with 1:19 left in regulation. Go Bolts!!!

  24. BigMacAttack Says:

Lightning win 4-3 in OT. 2-0 now. Nice start. Go Bolts!!!

  25. JimBuc Says:

yeah, that’s it. You got me all figured out . . . and it hurts 🙂

  26. Bib Fortuna Says:

I agree with JimBuc – he makes some good points. But I’m having fun watching Joe shoot blanks.

  27. admin Says:

    Joe here,

Big Fortuna – Welcome. Considering Joe’s not shooting anything, Joe’s not sure where your “blanks” line comes from.

  28. JimBuc Says:

Joe knows I am actually a big fan. Have said so many times.

  29. McBuc Says:

Penn is a team player and will say thing to help his team mates.

  30. gitarlvr Says:

Has anyone else noticed that in addition to apparently being a workout warrior Jeremy Trueblood has avoided killing every offensive drive we have with a penalty this year? It seemed to me the endless false start/unsportsmanlike penalties that he accrued in years past were what held him back from being a good player. Is this guy finally putting it together?

  31. BigMacAttack Says:

    Trueblood? Contract year.
