“Know Your Role, And Shut Your Mouth!”

August 27th, 2010

The saga of the demotion of Sabby and his lashing out at the Bucs and his coach, Raheem Morris, continues to grow.

This time the source is none other than former Bucs defensive end Steve White.

It’s one thing for Sabby to be criticized by someone like Joe or a Twittering scribe from a MSM outlet who is too sensitive when an ombudsman points out his warts.

But this criticism is coming from a man who logged seven years in the NFL, had an interception in an NFC Championship game and started on one of the greatest defensive teams in NFL history, things Sabby has yet to do.

Before I go any further I will acknowledge that Sabby said he was informed of his demotion via text message from his position coach, Jimmy Lake. If true that’s kind of bogus for sure. But having been demoted before I can tell you that having someone tell you face to face really doesn’t lessen the blow. The end result is the same, you’re still 2nd string.

So ok I can give him a pass about having a gripe as far as how the team let him know he was no longer starting. But I can’t really give him a pass on the stuff he said about it not being a “fair competition.” Nope not at all. And I started to leave it alone after Coach Morris roasted him pretty good. But then it kept bothering me so I felt like I just HAD to say something.

Well last year at times it was especially hard not to blast Sabby after games. He was such a weak link on our defense that it was amazing to me that he was a starter in the NFL. I’ve said this before but its worth repeating. With strong safeties in the NFL you covet the guys who can both cover AND be a physical presence in the box. But failing that combination you want a guy who at least can do one or the other. Sabby, for most of the season, could do neither.

White went on to write in great lengths how he strives not to take personal shots at any player, but that Sabby’s reaction to the Bucs coaching staff so unnerved the former Bucs defense end, he could stay silent no longer. White found it grossly disrespectful how Sabby tried to point a finger at Raheem Morris for his benching.

White also invoked a quote from former Miami Hurricanes defensive tackle Dwayne Johnson, better known as WWE personality “The Rock.”

That Sabby, he’s one bad mother…Shut your mouth…

Well said Steve. If you are reading this today I have a question. Beckles said you typically find out about your roster spot on a depth chart in the locker room, like when I played DE in high school. Is this really the case? If it is the case, than could’nt we llok at the “text” as a a heads up for Sabby, so he knew before going into the locker room and finding it at the same time as his peers. Now, that being said, a phone call or face to face would have been better.

  2. eric Says:

Could it be that there are some players who do not want to play for Raheem Morris, the great players coach and motivator?

I think Rah did the right thing, and pissed off players are an occupational hazard when decisions are made.

I will note that Chucky was roasted for similar things. (the players don’t like him! the players don’t like him!)

  3. McBuc Says:

Eric. Yep, no one is liked by everyone.

  4. KJ Says:

Well said by Steve White. How did this even come as a surprise to Sabby? Did he watch himself in game film at all last year? He’s lucky to still have a spot on an NFL roster for god’s sake. He’s a career special teams player, at best, from here on out. Those can be valuable, but not when they moan about being 2nd string and take shots at the head coach. Actions speak louder than words, Sabby, and your play last year was loud and clear.

  5. Larry Says:

If Steve White blasts him, he deserves the blasting. The man knows his stuff.

  6. Not A Rocket Surgeon Says:

    Another solid piece Steve.

    Thanks.

  7. RahDomDaBest Says:

So now that Raheem Morris has officially made Sabby the scapegoat for the defense playing poorly, and everyone else for that matter, everythin will be peachy in Bucland now, right? No more excuses?

Now, the way people have aggressively attacked Sabby, in the media, in the message boards etc, post edited for racist based commentary.

  8. sgw94 Says:

    @McBuc

I think it varies from coaching staff to coaching staff. Some have face to face talks, some call, evidently some text, and others just show the depth chart. It’s important to note that the the Bucs sent out a press release the same night so it’s possible the text was sent so Sabby wouldn’t hear about it first from the media.

  9. sgw94 Says:

I wonder just how many many racist comments a guy has to make before something is done…..Seriously.

  10. Not A Rocket Surgeon Says:

    Agreed.

    Joe – ?

  11. eric Says:

Thats some seriously sicko stuff RahDomDaBest.

Rah is just trying his best to coach, I don’t believe he has a racist bone in his body.

I notice Shanahan has gone fullblown media against Haynseworth. The Jets tried some stuff to get Reves back. I really don’t think Rah’s statements are unusual at all.

John McKay used to do it all the time. Specifically Wally Chambers and his bad knee. (There is a blast from the past!)

  12. oar Says:

Mr White, Apparently 100+! Also great stuff again, thanks!

  13. oar Says:

RahDom, You are a waste of DNA! I see you crawled out from under your rock! GO BACK! Pathetic!

  14. admin Says:

    Joe here,

Joe apologizes for not reading every comment and responding faster. Joe has filters in place for foul language, but racist speech is tough for Joe to catch without some help, or unless Joe sees it himself. And Joe is quite busy. …you can always e-mail Joe at joe@joebucsfan.com

RahDomDaBest, it’s been edited above, and it’s not going to fly anymore. Ball’s in your court. There are no more warnings. Your comments are not what this forum is or will be about.

  15. Steve from Oregon Says:

Steve….thank you again for your insight.

Its sad that Joe has to play the role of babysitter on here because of one or two people.

Love the site Joe….thanks as always!

  16. Dew Says:

Thanks Steve. I think if possible he will soon be traded. I like what Grimm brings longterm. And other guy (can’t remember his name) is a beast on special teams. So we don’t need Sabby the Ahole.

  17. Joe Says:

Its sad that Joe has to play the role of babysitter on here because of one or two people.

Eh, comes with the territory. Just sad Joe was working and away from the stie for a while, thus missed it.

Love the site Joe….thanks as always!

Thanks Steve! Compliments are always appreciated. 🙂

  18. McBuc Says:

Dew…That would be C. Lynch, the younger brother of J. Lynch.

  19. Joe Says:

    McBuc:

Corey Lynch is in no way related to John Lynch.

  20. Not A Rocket Surgeon Says:

but he is related (through Marriage to Billy Graham) weird.

  21. Not A Rocket Surgeon Says:

    (through marriage) to Billy Graham.

  22. McBuc Says:

Joe….Was there another Lynch that was that tried out? I could have swore Lynch’s little brother came down here once before, and I thought Corey was him. I could be wrong thoguh…

SGW…Thanks for the responce as well.

  23. McBuc Says:

Joe…you are right, they are cousins.

  24. McBuc Says:

Yeah, that was a joke about the cousins…That is what I get for believing the dude down the hall at work. In fact John is his idle…

“Ever since I was 10, I’ve wanted to meet him, so hopefully that’ll happen,” he said. “He was a big-time player. What’s funny is I was watching tape of him last month in Cincinnati when he was with the Broncos. I watched a lot of tape of him, just to see how he played. So hopefully I’ll get a chance to make this team and be able to help out.”

  25. Joe Says:

    McBuc:

Joe…you are right, they are cousins.

They are no relation at all. Heard John Lynch say this. John Lynch is from the west coast. Corey Lynch grew up in South Florida.

  26. McBuc Says:

    Joe’s:

Yeah, I educated myself a little too late. I was joking about the cousins, but forgot to add the rest of my post at the time. Sorry about taking up the space. Maybe deep down I hoped they were related.

  27. Vince Says:

    Great job as usual Steve!

  28. Gary Says:

oh man… rahdom finally getting it!! just wish i knew what he said… sounds like it was worse than his usual garbage!

So Joe, you say no more warnings, does that mean his next racist remark will result in him being banned? If so, i will log in immediately as him and send him on his way!

  29. Radio Mushmouth Says:

I don’t think Sabby said anything that was all that disrespectful. all he said was that he didn’t think there was a real competition, and the job was predetermined.

If it’s such an outrageous statment, then point to something in this offseason that shows how much better Sean Jones is playing. Sean Jones hasn’t done squat from the practices and games I’ve seen….and it’s not like there isn’t precidint for fake competitions under this regime, ask Matt Bryant, Luke McCown , and many others….

  30. Radio Mushmouth Says:

…and by the way , I really wish I knew what rahdom said also . Dammit I always miss the juicy stuff 🙂

  31. McBuc Says:

Radio, not sure if we can count bryant, he did not kick so he lost by default.

  32. oar Says:

Hope Byrant doesn’t kick some winning games against us for the Falcons.

  33. McBuc Says:

    oar…no kidding right!

  34. KJ Says:

Ok so Sean Jones hasn’t wowed us in two preseason games.. So what? He’s shown a knack throughout his career as a playmaker with good instincts and a reliable tackler. What has Sabby done to prove he’s a starter? Nothing! He had a 16 game tryout last year and was a complete disaster. Insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result. Putting Sabby back out there as a starter this year would be insane.

  35. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Anytime you go through the media to say that the coaches were misleading or dishonest, that is disrespectful. Even if it is right, it is still disrespectful. The coaches said it was a fair competition, he is basically saying they are liars. I have a hard time seeing why it wasn’t a competition, since by all accounts they have been splitting first team reps throughout all the camps, as well as in the preseason. If they already had it predetermined, why do that? You would want the new guy to get as many reps as possible, to get acclimated to the new team. I’m sure they had a preference as to who they wanted to win, but they are going to put the best guys on the field. I think the same could be applied last year with McCown and Leftwich, but neither performed and only one had trade value. Had they not had Freeman waiting, the end result probably would have been different.

The issue is not what Jones has done, it’s what Sabby hasn’t done – improve. Last year, he was simply awful. Not only did he miss a ton of tackles (don’t forget he almost cost us the N.O. game because he missed an easy tackle. We only won because their kicker missed a chip shot on the next play), he gave up a ton of deep passes, and most importantly, he made no real “splash” plays. Jones will be solid, but probably not spectacular. That’s all we really need, because our secondary is our biggest team strength already. All throughout training camp, Sabby has been, well, Sabby. In the preseason, still Sabby. Then he commits a stupid personal foul right in front of the official. So if you want to say Jones won by default, fine. But to say it was predetermined is incorrect. If Sabby made some plays and didn’t continue to make the same mistakes, then he would have a beef. But because he didn’t, I could give a sH%@ less if he thinks it was set up, and neither should anyone else. Like KJ said, if he would have started the same old Sabby this year, that would have been a terrible decision; unless you enjoy watching 70 yard TD passes.

  36. BigMacAttack Says:

I think Steve summed up Sabby’s pathetic tenure quite well. Not much else to say really.

I love the Rock. He rocks, and I like Bill Goldberg too.

I think Randy Couture is going to ground and pound James Tony, choke him out, and then laugh at him. May have to try and catch the fight after the Game. Does anybody know what bars close to the CITS will have the fight?

    .

  37. Radio Mushmouth Says:

Well , the proof will be in the pudding. Let’s see how great our defense is now…if they still suck , it looks like you will all need to find a new goat….

  38. Trguy12 Says:

I don’t know if the competition was a “competition” this preseason.
In the games they played neither distinguished themselves except negatively so in Sabbys case with the penalty. I just think they watched tape of Sabby as every fan did being that bad for an entire season. It certainly made me not want to see this guy play anymore….can imagine the coaches feeling the same.
Wouldn’t mind seeing the guy do better but the amount of mistakes and the level of play was just that bad.
