McCoy Could Sign Before Bradford

July 28th, 2010

Now here’s a reason to click on this darn link to visit BucGear.com and buy a Gerald McCoy jersey:

Mark Dominik is negotiating to sign the defensive tackle rookie manbeast and doesn’t think Sam Bradford’s deal needs to get done first, so reports the Mad Twitterer, of the St. Pete Times.

Dominik said Tuesday that he is in ‘active negotiations,’ with McCoy’s agent, Ben Dogra, on either a five or six year deal.

Dogra’s firm, CAA, also represents Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford, the first overall pick by the Rams. Dominik dismissed the perception that Bradford must be signed before McCoy, who was selected third overall. But he admits Bradford’s deal could serve as a baseline for the market.

Who is Joe to quibble with Dominik thinking he can get a deal done with McCoy, the No. 3 pick, before Sam Bradford or Ndamukong Suh get signed?

Good luck, Dominik. Joe hopes it’s a swift process.

Bucs fans are getting buckled up for a painful season, and McCoy missing a chunk of training camp would surely make things feel worse.

My thought is that McCoy probably told his agent he wants a deal done by training camp’s start, so he doesn’t miss any time.

As to the “Bucs fans are getting buckled up for a painful season…” comment, you should have said “some fans” because I have no doubt this season will be far, far less painful than last season, and it might even be enjoyable with a nice end result.

  2. Gary Says:

He will be signed very soon after camp starts if not before. It does help that his agent belongs to the same firm as bradford b/c they will know the general parameters of sams contract.

I agree Pete, just on sheer luck alone this season has to be better. It seemed everything went wrong last year.

  3. bucfanjeff Says:

The only thing painful is watching Penn hold out, though I understand.

  4. The White Tiger Says:

Aren’t most draftees signed in reverse order of their draft selection each year?

Didnt Dom just sign our 2nd round draft pick a couple weeks ago (I.e., doesn’t that kinda reinforce the reverse order concept we see play out EVERY year)?

I think defensive tackles usually sign before QB’s drafted ahead of them…and #3 overall QB’s that are coming off of a major surgery to their throwing shoulder…don’t we EXPECT them to undergo difficult contract negotiations?

It sounds like there is no end to the spinning – and its not JUST from the “mad twitterer”…

Besides – we were told A) Money is no object and B) Our Bucs didn’t sign any free-agents because we were going to build through the draft. Not only does that imply early signing, reporting on time, and Dom can use the money saved from NOT signing a veteran WR, DE, or RB…to us Buc fans….but it also signaled G-Mac’s agent that the Bucs are made of money.

    See, we aren’t dumb.

    No need for spin.

  5. JDouble Says:

Buckled up for a painful season? Not this fan.

While I expect us to struggle, probably only win 5-8 games, and miss the playoffs…we have a roster full of young exciting players that I can’t wait to watch every Sunday! For the first time in forever. it actually feels like there is a future to this team. Painful? Nah. I haven’t been this excited about football in atleast 5 or 6 years!

McCoy will be signed, sealed, delivered at camp on Saturday.

  6. BigMacAttack Says:

I too agree with Pete. “Some Fans…”

Joe needs some football bad, because there has been a good deal of negative comments tacked on to the end of these reports. I hope all the positive news is right around the corner, with the first being all draftees signed and in camp. Secondly, Penn comes to his senses, and Third, Freeman looks in total command of the offense and loves his new targets.

  7. Seriously? Says:

@Gary, I’m glad you think that “luck” will be on our side. That’s pathetic.

@The White Tiger, building through the draft DOES NOT imply early signings and timely reporting to camp.

  8. Not A Rocket Surgeon :P Says:

I wouldn’t be surprised to see GMC at Training Camp saturday. As a matter of fact, I look forward to it.

It’s been a long tough summer without football.

  9. joey88 Says:

@JOE…. “I’m excited to be selected to the the bucs, this is where i wanted to be” -GMC…..LETS SEE HOW SERIOUS HE REALLY IS ABOUT WANTING TO GET A DEAL DONE.

  10. Gary Says:

    Seriously,

I was simply making a point that our luck was very bad last year. I am in no way saying that alone will take us to the top. Just that all else being constant, we would improve this year.

If you know anything about me, you would I believe this team has improved significantly.

  11. Capt.Tim Says:

Ok, word is McCoy signs tonight, around 6:30, or tomorrow, around 2:30. Next rumor- Friday or Sat, Penn gets offered a one year extension to his contract- more money than tender offer, no guarantees for next year( due to strike). Next rumor- by Monday, Bucs sign a Veteran OT for depth by Monday. They want to wait to see who gets cut later, but they also plan to sign a Vet DE before season starts- but might wait til last cut down to do it! Strangely, nothing about signing Grimm yet . ., of course, that should be a really easy contract to do. Hope my source is good, or the Slow squad is gonna beat me up on this one!

  12. Gary Says:

Capt. are you joking, or do you really hear that stuff? Please provide some info. on your source if you are serious.

  13. Capt.Tim Says:

JDouble- don’t let the haters or Chuckettes get to you, I too am excited about this team for the first time in years! We actually have some young talent to get excited about!! I think McCoy, Price, Benn and Williams are going to be fun to watch! I think our defense will remind you of our defenses of old! Think Raheem is the right guy to mutate our Tampa two into something even better. Quincy black is going to be racking up sacks this year, something the Tampa Two didn’t do before- blitz line backers. They are also going to do something else different- really big Guys at DE. Like DEs in a 3-4, but still in the 4-3. They think McCoys quickness on the inside will drive QBs wide, and big DEs will be able to collapse the corners in- kind of a new thing. Big DE should definately help on Running plays! The offensive scheme is exciting! Dint know how well we’ll run it this year, but should still produce some exciting moments! I like Graham in the flats alot, and a vertical passing game will be new to the Bucs. We.’ve NEVER had an exciting offense! So , yeah, I’m excited- only a few days til we get it started!

  14. Capt.Tim Says:

Gary, first let’s wait and see how accurate my source is. He’s been pretty good so far! Secondly, if I give you any info on my source, he ain’t gonna be my source anymore! And will probably kick my large ass for several days! So, let’s see if he’s still right!

  15. oar Says:

I didn’t realize magic eight-balls were now a “source”? LOL!

  16. JimBuc Says:

What? Sing him early? I thought the Glazers were going to trade him because they could not afford the big guaranteed contract? Maybe they got a loan? One of you guys loan them a few mill?

  17. JimBuc Says:

Oops — “Sign” Sincerely, WTOP (Worst Typist on Plante)

  18. Not A Rocket Surgeon :P Says:

Capt – what has your source reported before that was accurate? Curious.

  19. Patrick Says:

    @Capt. Tim

What source are you gettin all that info from??

  20. Capt.Tim Says:

Oar, you know I like you, can we PLEASE not mention balls again- lol

  21. oar Says:

CaptTim, Sounds like inquiring minds want to know! Come on, you can go ahead and tell them. All it takes is a little shake and you too can have all the inside info. lol

  22. oar Says:

CaptTim, Goot one! Sorry. As you know, those damn things are always coming up in footb…oops, see almost did it again, these conversations!

  23. Capt.Tim Says:

I reported the Benn signing at 7:00am, before anyone that I know about reported it. Couple other things I’ve posted in the Past. But I sure hope he’s right about these! Otherwise you guys are gonna crucify me. But, my buddy is definitely ” in the Know”. But a lot of variables could screw this up! And the Bucs are going to issue a contract to a OT this weekend. He may or may not sign it! ( now sweating profusely, Capt. Tim wonders if he will rue the day he went into the prediction business!)

  24. Capt.Tim Says:

Listening to Oar’s advice, I have now purchased a ” a magic 8 b**l”, hoping it will also verify what I was told this Morning!

  25. BigMacAttack Says:

LEt’s hope your right Captain. It only makes sense, and Dom is a pretty smart guy. Go Freakin Bucs!!! Hell Yeah! Buc-in-A!!!!

  26. Capt.Tim Says:

Yes, I was ecstatic when I heard that they are trying to have both McCoy and Penn in camp by Monday- hope it works out the way they want it to!

  27. Capt.Tim Says:

Sorry. Missed first Prediction. Source said they hit a snag. Still expects him signed by Sunday at latest . 🙁
