Phony Fine Comment Intended To Push Penn

June 18th, 2010

Years ago Joe used to work with a guy who routinely advised people to “never believe anything you’re ever told.”

Needless to say, that dude was a pretty unhappy person who doomed himself to a life of solititude and alcoholism.

However, that phrase always stuck with Joe, and it served Joe very well throughout his reporting career.

Last week, Mark Dominik told reporters he could fine Donald Penn for not attending next week’s minicamp, despite Penn not having a contract for 2010. It turns out, reports eye-RAH! Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune, that Dominik’s comments were pure deception and the Bucs informed the media of their intentional gaffe yesterday.

A week ago Dominik said, “Anybody who does not show up to mandatory minicamp is subject to fines, even Donald Penn if he hasn’t signed his tender.”

A team spokesman said Thursday those comments were made in an effort to persuade Penn to sign a tender worth $3.168 million.

Joe’s not sure what’s worse: lying to the media, or the true end result of having fans all over the Tampa Bay area foolishly standing around the water cooler spouting off to their co-workers about how the Bucs can fine Penn for missing minicamp.

Ultimately, dishing out BS to media is lying to the fans, and that’s not cool whether you’re 3-13 or 13-3.

What is your ridiculuous and defensive response to this JImbuc? If you cant admit how sad, fraudulent, unfair and unprofessional this is – then thanks for most obviously exposing your bias.

This also may be a terminable offense.

  2. Joe Says:

    Thomas:

    What are you talking about???

    ADDENDUM:

Sorry Thomas, Joe thought you were talking about him. Joe’s bad. Carry on. 🙂

  3. sgw94 Says:

One thing not to be lost in all this is that the media, without one iota of fact checking, published those lies as truth. Its an indictment against them that not one of them took the time to call the league office of the nflpa just to make sure they weren’t getting snowed and instead had to wait for the person who did the lying to let them in on the joke. Although I have yet to see any, every single outlet and media personality who reported what was said by Dominik and never went back to verify it as being true should stand up and be accountable and apologize both to the fans and to Donald Penn. They were used for propaganda and they should acknowledge it. Otherwise why should any of us trust anything they “report” any more?

  4. Louie Says:

It’s one thing to fool the fans (who cares about those saps!), but do they really think Penn’s agent doesn’t know the rules?

Here we go again! In what seemed to be an otherwise competent off-season by the Bucs front-office, things start to unravel.

Joe, didn’t you scold me (sorta) when I was trying to get clarification on this situation last week?

  5. RahDomDaBest Says:

The GM should not be able to claim that he can fine a player, when he can’t. And if he is dumb enough to think it is going to somehow change Penn’s mind, don’t you think Penn’s agent has the contract too? And don’t you think the agent knows if Penn can get fined or not?

I actually think Dom misspoke because he didn’t know the freakin rules himself/screwed up with his comment… by claiming he did it for motivation to Penn only gives him an out/excuse. Seriously, think about the flack he and the organization would have gotten if they admitted to not knowing Penn would be fined or not while blabbing away to reporters.

  6. RahDomDaBest Says:

Damn you Louie… you posted before me… now it looks like I stole your idea about his agent knowing the rules. ha ha

  7. RahDomDaBest Says:

Either way this is bad… so Dom is admitting he lies (purposely misleads)…

Credibility is officially out the window for him.

    Oh well.

For now on, not one of you apologists can quote the Buccaneer’s organization and expect it to hold any weight… since the team has officially relinquished credibility and all…

  8. buc_realist Says:

Why is the Gm trying to lure Penn to sign with lies. He should try Hamburgers or free lunch at Lee Roy Selmons.

  9. d-money Says:

    Joe,

“Years ago Joe used to work with a guy who routinely advised people to “never believe anything you’re ever told.”
Needless to say, that dude was a pretty unhappy person who doomed himself to a life of solititude and alcoholism.”

I didn’t realize that you and Eric went that far back.

  10. Louie Says:

@RahDomDaBest, you’re on to something. Why would Dom lie if it’s obvious to everyone that Penn’s agent would know its a lie. The only explanation is that Dom doesn’t know the rules. Oh god, we really are in deep $hit.

I can just imagine that Penn’s resolve in this matter just got stronger. Way to go Dom! You big dummy!

  11. d-money Says:

I’m usually a supporter of Dom but this is pretty stupid.

He should have spun it by saying he mis-spoke and something like by fining Penn he actually meant lowering the offer on the table.

It would have still been stupid but it wouldn’t have been quite as bad.

  12. RustyRhino Says:

Not wanting to listen to your bosses “recommended” plans for you in the work place (Nutritionist plan, Strength & Conditioning coaches plan) showing up for all the OTA’s (2 years in a row) why do we expect him to sign on time? I know it is his livelihood but why would you not do as your boss “recommends” if it is not out of mind what it is your being “recommended” to do then you do it.

As good as Penn is and he is a good LT these inactions by him shows me a flag being hoisted. I don’t blame the team to want some security in their investment. The ability to know that your “starting” LT wont balloon up during the year. That he will follow the advice of the training staff.

If and when Penn does sign his Tender and follows through with doing these “recommended” things then he will get a long term contract, IMO.
But i don’t pretend to know the ins and outs of a NFL contract or any contract for that matter, i just know how i go to work, giving 110% everyday, doing what is “Recommended” by my boss is one of the things that keeps me employed where i like to be..

  13. Joe Says:

Joe, didn’t you scold me (sorta) when I was trying to get clarification on this situation last week?

Last week was a long time ago but even Joe was suspicious of “fining” Penn. Joe was under the impression Dominik could have lowered his offer to Penn but not fining.

  14. jarrett Says:

Steve i see your point, but if the gm comes out and says it wouldnt you believe it to be true. I mean he is basically the ceo for a multimillion dollar business. If he lied to trick him or didnt know the rules its pathetic either way. This and the off the record thing are so amateur its not even funny, although i agree with alot of what jimbuc says, about the rebuilding process he can never convince me that dom is nothing better than director of college scouting, and raheem no better than a d coordinator. They both could be very good at their current jobs in 5 years but way to underqualified and underexperienced to be successful now.

  15. Capt.Tim Says:

Jeez Joe, you’re a little touchy about being lied to, aintcha?
Guess you’re not a big fan of the government, either. They’ve been using the media as a propaganda machine for years. Reporting info is like buying a car, “let the Buyer beware!”. Just cause their trying ta sell it, don’t mean we gotta buy it. Don’t worry, they used ta, but we still love ya!:)
Buc-realist, Finally a true fan with the teams best interest at heart! Great to see someone who can analytically resolve the Penn problem! I myself have offered to buy Penn all the wings he can eat at “Mugs”, once he signs! And since I am about the same size as Mr. Penn,I believe the two of us would make that a night of historical significance in wing eating history.310, 360, WHO CARES! At either weight, he was the best player we put on the field last year! So, Mr. Penn, sign up, then belly up to to da wing Bar! It’s all good!
Wonder if “Mugs” would add my new favorite drink, ” cheerleader sweats” to their impressive drink list??

  16. bucfanjeff Says:

Could it be a new rule for this uncapped year? That could at least explain why he didn’t know he can’t fine him.

This hold out could get nasty. Ironically enough, both sides have legitimate reasons AND both sides have much to lose. I do tend to think Penn is making the biggest gamble because it’s his career. The Bucs can always put in another LT, good or not, and choose to address the position next year.

  17. Capt.Tim Says:

Oh, Joe, you’re invited too! A few “cheerleader sweats” wil help was away that “used by Dominick” feeling!
    Couldn’t hurt!

  18. Capt.Tim Says:

    BucfanJeff,
good points, but personally I think Josh Freeman has the most to lose . . .
Namely, his ass, if Penn ain’t over their covering it!
And ultimately, I think he’s gonna be the the one that walks in Mark’s office and says enuff is enuff, if this goes into training camp. We are up against some monster DEs this year, and if Freeman has Stylez White’s number tatooed on his Jersey in camp, he ain’t gonna wanna see what the regular season brings!
It all goes back to that”franchise QB”. In the NFL, his voice is louder than any Coach, GM, or player! It’s all about Neo!

  19. oar Says:

Capt Tim, I think they do already it’s called “pom-pom Dom”! And, no not that Dom(Bucs GM), although that could be fitting as well.

  20. Louie Says:

That new PR guy sure looks like a waste of money. Wasn’t he hired to make sure the Bucs don’t look like total morons?

  21. BigMacAttack Says:

Rusty Rhino, I think you nailed it. I agree.

I may be naive, but I don’t see Dom’s tactics as a big deal. It’s business and think of all the lies Politicians tell every minute of every day. Lawyers lie just for the sake of doing it. I was on Penn’s side but I’m having reservations after Dom’s off the record comments. Dom knew his statement would be leaked, and this is the first real defense I have heard (from the Bucs) to Penn’s argument. Penn needs to follow their physical regimen for him including diet. I think Dom is pretty smart and knew exactly what he was doing. If the local media fell for it, then shame on them. I doubt it will happen again anytime soon. Still we have much bigger problems, like soon to be Black & Brown Slimey Beaches, $Trillions in debt. This is peanuts, and Penn needs to pull his head out of his arse.

  22. RahDomDaBest Says:

@Louie “That new PR guy sure looks like a waste of money. Wasn’t he hired to make sure the Bucs don’t look like total morons?”

    LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It turns out the Buccaneers organization is worse than the Bush administration… fitting.

Ari had NO IDEA what he was getting into!

And to make it worse, in the NFL, you actually have to play the games on Sundays… and if you don’t win, there is no benefit of the doubt… there is NO SPIN doctor that can spin perennial losing in the NFL… especially when you have tens of thousands of fans so passionate about there team that they will lay into the Paid Pumpers… for free.

  23. BigMacAttack Says:

And Joe, Peanut Smith is no running back, not even close. He is a joke of a running back and is a kick returner. Stroughter appears to have all the same attributes and not a fumbler. Preston Parker is a wildcard and can also return kicks. If they cut Peanut, it wouldn’t break my heart and I’d rather see Huggins on the roster, with Parker and Stroughter on Kickoff/Punt duty, but not until Parker plays in the Preseason to confirm.

  24. oar Says:

Instead of Penn, maybe we could sign Morpheus for Capt Tim’s Neo(The One, I assume)?

  25. lightningbuc Says:

This is absolutely laughable. It’s obvious Dominik doesn’t know his ass from a hole in the ground, and I have no doubt he had no clue last week that Penn could not be fined. This clown has called Penn a lazy fat ass (off the record) and now claims they were trying to trick Penn into signing. I didn’t think it could get any funnier then yesterday, but I was wrong. Cue the monkey grinders and erect the tent – the Glazer Buffoon Circus has arrived!

  26. buckeyebob Says:

Do yo0u think any GM< Coach, Athletic Director, college coach tell the whole truth to the media…..check Sabin out for one. Who cares if DM misspoke on the fine, the real truth of all this is the club is following the rules that the players agreed to when the signed the CBA. Penn needs to sing for the $3+m and show up and push away from the table.

  27. Capt.Tim Says:

“at starting Left Tackle, Morpheus,” yeah, got a nice ring to it!
I’ll tip a “Pom pom Dom” ta that! Bottle it up and down ta the beach! Pull up a dead dolphin for a bench, flip a dead Sea turtle for a table, and Stare out into the gulf of BP. Then I’ll wonder why I’m so concerned about a game, while all my favorite beaches are becoming oil slicks. Meybe we get a little carried away here.
RahDomdabest , “all their credibility is out the window!”. Oh, let’s not get to self righteous. You and I have both been got(repeatedly!) tweaking the facts to match our argument. Just like the Bucs, we are much more interesting in proving our point, than to let a little thing like the facts screw it up!! Right, right? I’m kinda glad they’re showing a little ‘nasty’ side. I never buy it when someone is giving me the goody two shoe version all the time!

  28. Capt.Tim Says:

Jesus Christ, lightningBug, don’t you ever lighten the F*** Up???
We KNOW, We KNOW! You hate the Glazers, Dominick, Morris, the Buc Players, Capt.Fear, the Cheerleaders, Etc!! We KNOW already! You don’t like the damn Pirate ship in the Stadium! WE GET IT !!!, now can you post a little less violently! The rest of us here are busy laughing at this B.S., don’t need a buzz kill on every fricking post!!

  29. Joe Says:

    BigMacAttack:

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves with Preston Parker. First, there’s a reason no one drafted the guy. Second, he has yet to return anything wearing pads. As far as Joe knows, on the NFL level, the only thing Parker can return is a stained shirt to Wal Mart.

  30. Orchard full of Idiots... Says:

What? Misinformation from a franchise’s front office?? THAT’S NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE…

Shouldn’t you Gruden Lovers appreciate all the lies and deceit?

  31. RahDomDaBest Says:

CaprMoron….. what lightningbuc said vs you crying about him contradicts what you just claimed… turns out his post was on topic and yours is the buzzkill

    HA HA!!!!

  32. Capt.Tim Says:

    And the ” slow squad” rallies, s l o w l y

  33. Radio Mushmouth Says:

This story can NOT be true. Everyone know that the only person in the entire NFL to ever tell a lie was Jon Gruden . Just ask Steve Dumeg.

…once we fired Gruden we were assured a lie-free locker room, so that is what we must have…

  34. Mr. Lucky Says:

    Please give me a break,

Saying Dom is unprofessional, a liar, etc., is just plain dumb. It happens all the time – just like when Obama said he was in control of the oil spill.

  35. Mr. Lucky Says:

The funny part is how you guys give Dom too much credit for thinking the, “Donald Penn gets fined” statement was a ruse. Don’t you think Penn’s agent would know the truth?

Dominik’s not as devious as you think – just sometimes slow or even sloppy.

Personally I’ve been spending way too much time reading and participating in this useless minutia and trivia.

    It’s summertime

Well it’s time to take a break so see you all in a few weeks.

  36. BamBamBuc Says:

Telling the truth went by the wayside a long time ago….

    Just look at the examples…

Clinton: “I did not have sex with that woman, Monica Lewinski”

Banks: “Your money is safe with us”

Auto makers: “We have a 5 star safety rating”

Stella Liebeck vs McDonalds: “I didn’t know the coffee was hot”
