Bucs Must Hire Sapp To Tutor New Tackle

April 11th, 2010

For the purpose of this post, Joe’s not going to entertain the possibility that the Bucs might trade down in the first round of next week’s NFL Draft, or not have have either manbeast Ndamukong Suh or Gerald McCoy available with their No. 3 pick.

And Joe’s going to pretend the Bucs pick one of those guys in an attempt to bring some A-level talent to their average-at-best D-line.

That written, Joe thinks Team Glazer should pay whatever it takes to hire Warren Sapp as a consultant to come in and help develop Suh or McCoy.

If the Bucs are looking for the next Sapp, then why not go out and bring Sapp in to help?

Sure, Raheem The Dream can set the parameters and timetables for Sapp’s limited tutoring, but there is no reason Joe can think of for Team Glazer not to get Sapp here to help. After all, “money will never be an issue when building [the Bucs],” Joel Glazer told Bucs fans last month.

Sapp might cost a few bills ($25,000 a day?), but he should be well worth every penny, especially if the Bucs will be forced to invest $30+ million guaranteed in the pick. Plus, Team Glazer couldn’t buy the publicity and excitement Sapp in town as a mentor would generate.

It’s quite obvious from this NFL.com video that Sapp has at least a little teacher in him, and he also could probably offer great advice to Suh or McCoy on leadership.

Sapp said, “I raised Raheem from Day 1.” So surely Raheem The Dream should trust Sapp with his new under tackle for a few days.

good idea, but were talking about the people who cut 55.

What is Sapp going to teach him ?? How to smoke too much pot and come into training camp fat and out of shape every year??

Only sapp could get away with that , cause he was a freak . I don’t want him teaching it to a rookie.

I have often thought that some of the stars that retired could be paid to coach/teach/mentor some of these guys. I realize that former players don’t necessarily make good coaches.. but cmon.. Brooks/Sapp/Lynch/Alstott and a few others probably have a lot to offer.

    Sapp’s intelligence is extremely high.

One thing I noticed about Sapp when he played here was that he never
ever ever dropped his guard. In other words, he was that mean, harsh
all business NFL DT 24 hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year.
That’s why he had such a bad reputation as far as dealing with fans off
the field……he had the same gritty attitude, whether he was lining up
on Sunday or eating dinner at Burns.

History is littered with the corpses of those who dropped their guard
just for a second………….heck, look at the Iliad and the Trojan horse.

Sapp is somewhat of a genius.

Not true …he’s retired now , and he’s still an asshole to anyone he meets . In fact , he goes out of his way to be a jackass. It’s just the way he is, it has nothing to do with him being in game mode.

This is why I doubt Sapp would even want the job. He probably enjoys his cake-job on the NFL Network , and would scoff if we asked him to come back as a paid mentor. He could careless about helping the Bucs , and he hates the city of Tampa. He’s always talking shit about the city , and he wouldn’t come back here.

Get the idea out of your heads , people.

Perhaps hiring Rod Marinelli back as DL coach last year would have been more helpful. The credentials of the chap currently occupying that position is not that impressive.

But, $ is no object. The Glazers have spared no expense in putting together the staff for raheem to work with the incoming rookies. Same for the scouting department. First class all the way.

So, guys like Sapp are not needed.

Who came up with this braainstorm?? He is a POS with capital letters. Hire some coaches not some thug.

  8. Matt Says:

Even if Sapp is an ass, don’t act like he doesn’t know anything about football. I guarantee you the man probably knows more about getting to the QB than our current DL coach.

Although Sapp has a bad rep off the field, on it he was all business. The way some of you hayseeds think, you would only draft players who act like girl scouts all the time. Unless you haven’t noticed, football is a very physical violent sport, is it an wonder some pretty mean nasty guys are the only ones capable of playing the game at that level. I mean who cares if someone smokes pot. Nowadays, those who have never smoked pot are probably outnumbered by those who have. As for McCoy, he seems well spoken and very respectful of Sapp. But if it takes someone of Sapp’s off field temperment to take this team to the promised land again, I’ll take Sapp’s temperment anyday. I could carealess if he’s a jerk off the field, I don’t hang with him.

I say this as Warren Sapp’s biggest fan, NO F-ING WAY!!

This would be a terrible idea. I love Sapp, but often his ego gets in the way of his productivity, especially now that he’s not playing. The Bucs might benefit from having him come in for an OTA or two. No way should he be a full time hire. The greatest, freakiest athletes don’t always make the best coaches. It’s the guys who are less naturally-gifted, who have learned the nuances of the game that allowed them to compete with guys like Sapp, that make good coaches.
