SI.com NFL columist Peter King suggested teams wanting quarterback Sam Bradford have already likely made calls to Mark Dominik with preliminary discussions about a potential draft day trade.

A lot of Bucs fans are already convinced that if manbeast Ndamukong Suh and Gerald McCoy are off the board when the Bucs pick at No. 3 in the NFL draft, the Bucs will trade down.

It’s not that simple. As the old saying goes, it takes two to tango.

Fielding a call from a Bucs fan on Sirius NFL Radio’s “The Opening Drive” this morning, longtime Sports Illustrated NFL columnist Peter King suggested Bucs general manager Mark Dominik has already fielded calls from other NFL executives in preparation for a potential trade that may go down on the first night of the draft.

The Bucs caller asked how quickly Dominik gets a phone call from Washington, Cleveland or Seattle after the draft begins if both Suh and McCoy are picked in an effort to land quarterback Sam Bradford.

“If someone wants Sam Bradford in the top three, they won’t wait until after the first two picks of the draft are made and until Tampa Bay is on the clock,” King said. “They will have already called [Dominik] long before the draft and made an ‘If so… ‘ conversation.”

For Bucs fans banking on Dominik trading down if Suh and McCoy are both gone, King had a cautionary tale.

“Remember, top five picks have not been traded much in the last few years because of the money involved. It’s not a gimme that everyone will jump up and aggressively trade up to No. 3.”

King also noted that he is not convinced Washington coach Mike Shanahan covets Bradford or any other quarterback at No. 3.

[UPDATE: After Joe wrote this post and scheduled it for an afternoon publishing, Joe learned Shanahan signed Rex Grossman, which only reinforces King’s statement that Shanahan is not compelled to trade with the Bucs to acquire the No. 3 pick.]

Anybody else worried that these two DT’s are just a bit over hyped?

  2. Meneghini Says:

I just want the bucs to make a good draft, with luck we’ll be playing on january

  3. d-money Says:

    Eric,

“Anybody else worried that these two DT’s are just a bit over hyped?”

I like both of these guys and I hope they get one of them. But I am worried that with all the hype if they dont lead the team in sacks, tackles, interceptions and have a couple of fumbles returned for touchdowns next year everyone is going to start screaming.

It usuallly takes 2 years or so for a DT to develop. Even Warren Sapp didn’t really start coming on until his second year.

  4. bucfanjeff Says:

I’m more concerned with the longevity of Suh than I am with McCoy’s ability.
Am I the only one concerned with Suh’s knees?
That said, I like McCoy better anyway, but we can’t go wrong with either one.

  5. zech Says:

I willin to bet that the bucs trade down even if mccoy is there !

  6. Tommy Boy Says:

If the DTs are there at 3 I’d be hard pressed to trade down. We’d have to be given great compensation in return.

But just to play along here are the players I wouldn’t mind taking if we traded down….

    1.) Spiller
    2.) Berry
    3.) Haden
    4.) Pierre-Paul
    5.) Dunlap

Taking in account how far we traded down and who is available. I really like the idea of drafting Spiller to give this run game some pop. Blaze the defenses with Spiller and pound them out with Graham. Caddy and Ward obviously taking a back seat or traded.

  7. zech Says:

If I trade down it will either be for spiller or mcclain!

  8. Eric Says:

It looks like the draft wizzards are currenlty giving more love to McCoy, and not Suh. Dude on the NFL channel went into a compelling diatribe about McCoy getting off the ball much faster, and Suh was a hold and react guy and would have to change his game for the pros.

Who knows if the guy knows squat, but thats what some are saying now.

I took note because it was similar to what the Commish had to say awhile back.

  9. Chuck Says:

I agree with the hype statement above, I hope fans can be patient with these guys and let them develop. I think it was Sapp’s third year that he really came out strong. the second year was good, but his third was a big sack year. I could be remembering wrong as well.

    bucs fans…patient…ha…haha….hahaha…bwahahahahahaahahahahhahah…ah.ah.ahaha…hahahah…ha…ok i’m done…oh…wait…bwahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahah

  11. Louie Says:

I think they are desperate to trade down just so they won’t have to pay the salary for the #3 pick.

  12. LaughingCat Says:

Shanahan signed Grossman. . . they may really need a new QB. Grossman’s a wonk.

  13. Joe Says:

    Grossman’s a wonk.

A Steve Spurrier quarterback stinking up the NFL? Imagine!

  14. Thegregwitul Says:

Nothing for nothing but it was only last season when the Bucs signed Byron Leftwich and then drafted Josh Freeman. Now I know there is more to risk regarding higher contract, etc. at the three spot, but I’m still not ready to rule out Washington making a play for a QB, even though they should go o-line or trade down, but I’m not running football teams, so what do I know?

  15. Eric Says:

The Brown have been doing some stupid stuff, so maybe Dominik can fleece them again like with Winslow.

I thnk they have 12 pics too.

  16. LaughingCat Says:

At least we didn’t sign Grossman. i’d rather sign no one than bad talent. We spent years buying up other people’s garbage hoping to rehab them.

  17. Finerdetailz Says:

Omg I just heard duemig say he hopes this coaching staff gets a pass if the Bucs win only 3 or 4 games next year. Now I know he is kissing some major Dominik a**. Joe how can u keep singing this guys praises. Depending on what he’s talking about he’s sometimes enjoyable but he is not being consistent at all in holding the regime responsible for putting a competetive team on the field. I am shocked he said that.

  18. Eric Says:

Duemig will never admit he is wrong about anything. The man is a waist of skin, undeserving of anyone taking him seriously or tuning in to his stupid show.

  19. zech Says:

I think the big dogg knows somethin and I’m thinkin if they go 0-16 raheem and dominic r safe because if there’s no football in 11 then they will be given another year or two to prove them selves worthy of a job! Personally if they go 3-13 again I would fire them quick!

  20. Mr. Glazer Says:

    Memo:

    Dear Mark,

Please feel free to talk to anyone concerning the upcoming draft. Just remember who’s paying the bills around here!

PS I have an upcoming interest payment in May so whomever you pick just remember to keep it under 20.

  21. Eric Says:

    dominik:

Don’t worry Mr. Glazer, there are enough fans in this town that actually believe we have a plan, so we should be able to string them along another year or two.

    Enjoy the soccer game sir.

  22. thomas Says:

    Glazer:

Mark, Make sure not to let slip out what we are paying Raheem because then everyone will know that even we don’t think that he is a NFL quality head coach.

Take any deal to trade out of that number 3 spot so that we dont have to pay that contract.

Keep making those financially inconsequential Reggie Brown, Sean Jones moves so that the remaining sheep i.e. fans don’t bail.

Make sure to keep feeding that idiot Duemig all the b.s.

If we are not forced out or killed over here in England, we may try some of these moves over here. But Surely the Brits aren’t as dumb as some of these clueless buc fans who actually believe we fired Gruden and replaced him with Raheem for the good of the football team!!

  23. Eric Says:

    @thomas

    ok, you win!
